Instead of Whisper
Whisper alternatives
Whisper is a free, open-source model for turning speech into text across languages. It can also translate speech into English, identify spoken languages, and detect voice activity. You can run it on Linux, macOS, or Windows through command-line or Python interfaces, and export transcripts as TXT, VTT, SRT, TSV, JSON, or JSONL. Its six model sizes balance speed and memory, with requirements of about 1–10 GB of VRAM. Setup requires ffmpeg, and performance varies by language; the turbo model is not intended for translation.

The alternatives here mostly serve a different job: they synthesize speech, read documents aloud, transform voices, or provide speech services through APIs. That can be a better fit than Whisper when you need generated audio or an online integration, but it may not replace local transcription. Compare recognition against synthesis, local versus cloud workflows, language and voice options, output formats, and pricing. Some services offer free plans or trials, while others charge; Whisper itself has no software charge under its MIT-licensed release.
