PanWriter alternatives

PanWriter is a free, open-source Markdown editor for Linux, macOS and Windows. Its distraction-free workspace pairs plain-text writing with a live preview, and its paginated view helps with print and PDF review. It can import DOCX files into Markdown and export edited text back to DOCX, as well as publish through Pandoc to HTML, EPUB, LaTeX, PDF, PowerPoint and InDesign formats. CSS adjustments update the preview live, while scripts and integrations can automate workflows.

The main trade-off is that Pandoc must be installed to export to most formats. Its desktop focus may also be less suitable for writers who want browser access, built-in collaboration or cloud sync. The alternatives differ in those priorities: some emphasize shared notes and web access, while others offer local Markdown editing across desktop systems. Before switching, weigh the formats and preview you need against collaboration, offline use, deployment and platform requirements. A web editor may simplify shared writing, but PanWriter’s local files and wide Pandoc export options may better fit a document-production workflow.
