Instead of devenv

devenv alternatives

devenv brings packages, languages, services, tasks, secrets, and shell tooling together in a project configuration built with Nix. It supports 58 languages and 42 preconfigured services, with supervised processes, integration tests, OCI container builds, and GitHub Actions support. SecretSpec can read secrets from sources such as Keychain and 1Password, and cached shell startup is stated to be under 100 ms after the first build. The project is MIT-licensed and free.

A switch may make sense if you need a manager focused on one language or SDK, or prefer not to build your workflow around Nix. devenv requires Nix and its installation instructions cover Linux, macOS, and WSL; the project no longer builds, tests, or releases for Intel Macs. Cloud remains in private beta. Compare alternatives by the runtimes they manage, their operating-system coverage, and whether you need a complete environment or only version selection. Sharing, CI, and shell integration may also affect which tool fits your team.
