Instead of kind
kind alternatives
kind runs local Kubernetes clusters built from Docker container nodes, with Kubernetes testing as its main purpose and local development and CI as other uses. It supports multi-node and high-availability setups, can build Kubernetes releases from source, and accepts Docker, Podman, or nerdctl as node providers. You can load images into a cluster and configure nodes, port mappings, and Kubernetes versions. It is free and supports Linux, macOS, and Windows, but Windows containers are unsupported or infeasible. Rootless providers also have restrictions, including no block storage or NFS mounts.

The alternatives here address different parts of development. Docker Desktop combines Kubernetes with Docker Compose and debugging tools; Garden and Tilt focus on developing Kubernetes applications. Kool deploys containerized web apps, while Devilbox and Tokaido provide local environments for particular web stacks. Testcontainers Desktop supports testing with real dependencies and offers runtime switching and container inspection. When choosing, weigh whether you need a Kubernetes cluster for testing, an application development workflow, deployment, or a stack-specific environment, along with the platforms and runtime options you rely on.
