Instead of Zotero
Zotero alternatives
Zotero brings source capture, reference organization, PDF reading and annotation, note-taking, and citation writing into a free, open-source research tool. Its browser Connector saves research items as you browse; collections, tags, and saved searches help organize a library. It supports more than 9,000 citation styles and integrates with Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, and Google Docs. Shared libraries and groups support collaboration, while the desktop app stores research locally by default and syncing is optional.

The trade-offs are storage and server setup: the free plan includes 300 MB, paid storage starts at $20 per year, and running Zotero’s data server yourself can be technically challenging and unsupported. Zotero offers Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, web access, and an API. Alternatives may fit better if you need a different PDF workflow, legal or multilingual citations, AI-assisted analysis, institutional access, or a self-hosted multi-user library. Compare platform support, citation and writing tools, collaboration, storage, and how each option works with your existing references.
