Instead of GitHub Codespaces
GitHub Codespaces alternatives
GitHub Codespaces turns a repository, branch, commit, or template into a configured cloud development environment. Each codespace runs in an isolated Docker container on a GitHub-hosted virtual machine, and repository dev container files let teams define repeatable setups. You can connect through a browser, Visual Studio Code, or GitHub CLI from an internet-connected device. GitHub Free includes 120 compute hours and 15 GB-month of storage; use beyond included allowances is billed monthly. Codespaces cannot be self-hosted, and repositories owned by managed user accounts cannot use it.

An alternative may fit better if you want infrastructure you control, a notebook-centered workspace, or a narrower workflow for data or AWS development. Compare how each product handles environments, collaboration, supported platforms, and the work you need to do. Also weigh free usage and project limits against paid plans: some options emphasize notebooks rather than general repository environments, while others let you connect to infrastructure you manage. Codespaces supports multiple IDEs and includes coding assistance, so a switch may trade those capabilities for a different hosting model or work area.
