Instead of Doorstop
Doorstop alternatives
Doorstop keeps textual requirements alongside source code through YAML files arranged in version-controlled document directories. Its hierarchy validates traceability, supports baselines and version history, and publishes documents and trace matrices as plain text, HTML, LaTeX, or Markdown. Teams can also exchange requirements through YAML, CSV, TSV, and Excel. It is free, supports Linux, macOS, Windows, API use, and self-hosting, and can run as a web server or WSGI application. The tradeoff is a workflow requiring Python and Git or another version control system, with no approval workflows and an experimental desktop GUI.

An alternative may fit better when work centers on classroom coding assessment, safety-critical engineering, richer document attachments, regulatory change, system modeling, or CAD surface design. Compare traceability, editing, collaboration, deployment, integrations, and export formats with your existing process. Pricing ranges from free and open source to freemium plans and paid products priced on request. Platform fit also matters: some options are browser-based, while others add local, self-hosted, or Windows-specific workflows.
