If you are buying storage only for Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, you probably do not need a microSD Express card yet. Nintendo lists the games at 24.1 GB and 20.1 GB respectively, or 44.2 GB combined, while the console has 256 GB of internal storage, part of which is reserved for system use. If you want extra room for a larger digital library, Samsung’s Nintendo-listed 256GB card is a straightforward modest-expansion choice; consider 512GB or 1TB only if your broader collection warrants it.

The capacity advice is based on Nintendo’s listed file sizes and the capacities documented by the card makers, not on a Zelda loading-speed comparison. Prices and seller availability vary; no live US price comparison establishes which card is currently the best value.

Do Zelda games require a microSD Express card on Switch 2?

No. Nintendo says no individual game currently requires extra storage, and these two Zelda editions together have listed file sizes of 44.2 GB. That is not a guarantee that updates or other installed games will fit in the remaining space, but it means buying a card solely to start these two games is not a requirement.

Nintendo advertises 256 GB of internal storage for Switch 2, with some of that space reserved for system use. The number is the console’s nominal capacity, not a promise of 256 GB available for downloaded games. Your decision therefore depends on how much space is free on your own console and what else you plan to install. Nintendo’s data-management FAQ covers storage management and game-space questions.

For the two titles, Nintendo’s US listings checked in 2026 give Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition a 24.1 GB file size and Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition a 20.1 GB file size. Their combined 44.2 GB is a calculation from those listings, not a separate Nintendo-published combined figure. Nintendo’s listing for Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and its listing for Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition provide the individual figures.

Do not substitute the original Switch editions’ download sizes when planning for the Switch 2 Editions. Nintendo lists the original Breath of the Wild at 14.4 GB versus 24.1 GB for its Switch 2 Edition, and the original Tears of the Kingdom at 16.5 GB versus 20.1 GB for its Switch 2 Edition. The edition you intend to play is the relevant figure.

Which capacity makes sense: 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB?

Choose capacity for the number and size of games you want installed, not for a supposed Zelda speed advantage. A 256GB card is a sensible starting point for a modest digital library; 512GB gives more headroom for multiple large downloads; and 1TB is for someone who expects to keep a much larger collection installed. None is required just to accommodate the two Zelda editions if the console has sufficient free space.

256GB: keep the expansion modest

Both Samsung and SanDisk document a 256GB microSD Express option for Switch 2. Samsung’s Nintendo-listed model is MB-MZ256S and comes with a three-year limited warranty. Nintendo listing a card can provide additional reassurance, but Nintendo licensing is not a compatibility requirement: the important requirement is that the card is microSD Express and compliant with the console.

The Samsung product page identifies the card for Nintendo Switch 2, but it does not establish a current lowest retail price. Compare the delivered price, seller, return terms, and warranty against the SanDisk 256GB option before buying rather than assuming either is the better deal.

512GB: more room for digital games

SanDisk documents a 512GB microSD Express card for Switch 2. It is the more suitable of the listed capacities if you expect to download and keep several additional games installed. Its rationale is capacity; the available figures do not establish that it loads either Zelda edition faster than a 256GB card.

1TB: for a much larger collection

SanDisk also documents a 1TB option. It is the capacity-first choice for someone with many more games to store, not an upgrade justified by these two Zelda titles alone. If most of your collection is physical or you are happy to remove and redownload games as needed, a terabyte may be more capacity than you need.

SanDisk’s 2026 data sheet estimates space for 9 games on 256GB, 18 on 512GB, and 36 on 1TB. Those are approximate counts based on an assumed 25GB average game size; they are not measured Zelda counts or guarantees. Individual game sizes vary, and the estimates should not be read as a prediction of how many particular titles will fit.

Which microSD cards work with Switch 2?

Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards for expanding game storage, not ordinary microSD or microSDXC cards used with the original Switch. Nintendo’s compatibility support states: “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” Look for the words “microSD Express” on the card and product listing; a familiar brand name or a UHS speed symbol by itself does not establish the required type.

Nintendo says Switch 2 supports compliant cards up to 2TB. The products discussed here are below that ceiling. A Nintendo-licensed card is a helpful indication that a product is intended for the console, but licensing is not mandatory if the card otherwise meets the microSD Express requirement. Check Nintendo’s microSD Express compatibility FAQ if you are checking a different card or need current compatibility details.

An older ordinary Switch microSD card is not a way to store or load digital Switch 2 games. Do not buy based only on the fact that a card worked with an earlier console: the card format requirement changed. The word “Express” is the key label to verify before checkout.

Does a faster card make Zelda load faster?

The advertised sequential-read figures do not establish which card loads Zelda faster on a retail Switch 2. Samsung specifies up to 800 MB/s sequential read for its 256GB card in a 2025 datasheet revision; SanDisk advertises up to 880 MB/s read for its Switch 2 Express range in a 2026 data sheet, with footnotes qualifying those figures as internal-testing or host-dependent. They are manufacturer figures, not a direct console-to-console comparison.

  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Transfer files and from your laptop at speeds up to 10 Gbps with USB A 3.2 port. Extra 2 USB A 2.0 ports are perfectly for your keyboards and mouse.

For a Zelda-focused purchase, prioritize correct Express compatibility, adequate capacity, seller trust, warranty, and actual price over a speed leaderboard. The cited specifications do not show a measured in-game advantage for either card, so there is no substantiated reason to pay extra for one based on a promised Zelda load-time improvement.

  • Confirm the format: the listing must identify a microSD Express card, not just microSD, microSDXC, or a UHS speed class.
  • Set a capacity target: start with the digital games you expect to keep installed, then account for the free internal storage you actually have.
  • Compare the full purchase terms: check the seller, warranty, returns, and delivered price for the exact capacity and model. Do not assume that a Nintendo listing means a retailer has the lowest price.
  • Verify what is being sold: a physical game card, a download code, and a game-key card are different purchase formats. Read the listing carefully if your goal is to avoid a download.
  • Plan on one card: Nintendo recommends using a single microSD Express card per console. Software distributed across multiple Express cards cannot later be directly combined onto one card.

How do you set up a new Express card?

The first use of a microSD Express card requires an internet-connected Switch 2 system update, according to Nintendo. Have the console connected to the internet before inserting a new card for the first time; the update requirement can otherwise interrupt setup.

  1. Choose the card before organizing downloads. Nintendo recommends one Express card per console because software stored across separate cards cannot be directly combined later.
  2. Connect Switch 2 to the internet. Nintendo says the first use of an Express card requires a system update delivered through an internet-connected system.
  3. Insert the microSD Express card and follow the console’s prompts. Use the system’s on-screen instructions for any update or setup steps presented; do not assume an ordinary Switch card can be used as a substitute.
  4. Check available storage after setup. The console’s internal space is partly reserved for system use, and card capacity should be treated as extra storage rather than a backup of all console data.

What goes on the card, and where are Zelda saves stored?

A microSD Express card can hold downloaded software, updates, downloadable content, and captures. It is not where Zelda save data is stored. Nintendo’s microSD Express FAQ says: “Game save data is stored to the system memory and cannot be copied or saved to a microSD Express card.”

That distinction matters if you are buying a card as a backup plan: moving or installing software on the card does not move the game’s save file there. Nintendo’s corrected FAQ says both Zelda Switch 2 Editions support Save Data Cloud, subject to applicable membership conditions. See Nintendo’s microSD Express FAQ for its storage and save-data guidance.

Physical Zelda game cards are a separate storage choice

Nintendo says physical Switch 2 Edition game cards include the Switch game and its upgrade pack on the card. That can suit someone who prefers physical ownership, but it does not make update or DLC storage irrelevant. Also distinguish a physical game card from a game-key card, which requires a game download; check the format stated by the seller rather than relying on a product image or a short title. Nintendo explains game formats in its Switch 2 FAQ.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the SanDisk game-count estimates to plan a Zelda library?

Treat them as a rough capacity illustration based on a 25GB average, not a count of Zelda titles. The two Switch 2 Edition file sizes are known individually, so use those listing figures for these games and the estimate only as a broad comparison for a varied library.

Does the Samsung 800 MB/s figure mean it is faster in Zelda than the SanDisk card?

No. The Samsung figure is a maximum sequential-read specification, while SanDisk’s figure has its own host-dependent or internal-testing qualifications. Neither is a measurement of Zelda loading on Switch 2, so the numbers do not support a game-performance ranking.

Can I move software from one Express card to another later?

Nintendo recommends one Express card per console and says software on multiple Express cards cannot later be directly combined onto one. Choose a capacity that leaves room for the library you intend to keep together.
