A durable game-library backup has three layers: the platform’s cloud save where a title supports it, a local copy of saves and custom files, and a protected account with a unique password and two-factor authentication. Platform downloads can restore installed files, but they do not automatically preserve every save, setting, mod, license, or account. Use the procedures below to build copies you can actually restore.
What a game-library backup must protect
“My games are in the cloud” can mean several different things. A storefront account normally proves that you own a license, while a cloud-save service may store only selected save slots or settings. Installed game data, saves, configuration files, mods, screenshots and custom maps can all have different backup paths.

| Data | What protects it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| License and purchase history | Your storefront or console account | A disk copy does not transfer ownership. Restoration requires the account that owns the game. |
| Installed PC game files | Steam’s Backup game files feature or a manual copy of the installation | Steam’s tool is intended for eligible Steam-delivered files; third-party installers and downloaders may not work. |
| PC saves and settings | A dated manual copy or backup software | They may be outside the installation folder and are not necessarily included in a game-file backup. |
| Cloud-supported saves | The game’s platform cloud service | Support is title-dependent. Offline changes can produce conflicts, and a lost cloud save may not be recoverable. |
| Console save data | PlayStation USB backup, Nintendo cloud save or console-to-console transfer | Each platform has its own account, storage and overwrite rules. |
| Mods, Workshop items and custom content | A separate local archive | These are commonly excluded from platform migration or backup tools. |
The safest design is therefore redundant: keep a platform copy for convenience, an independent local copy for recovery, and the account security needed to regain access.
Build the three-layer backup
Layer 1: Enable cloud saves per game
Turn on the cloud-save feature offered by each storefront or console, then verify it for every important title. A store badge is only a starting check; the game itself must implement the service. Some games synchronize settings, profile statistics and saves, while others synchronize only selected files.

Cloud storage is not an archive. If you play offline, the newest files can remain only on that device. When the device reconnects, the platform may show competing local and cloud versions. Do not choose a version by guesswork: compare the timestamps and progress, and preserve a local copy before accepting an overwrite.
Valve describes Steam Cloud this way: “The Steam Cloud allows games and the platform to utilize cloud storage hosted by Steam.” That service is useful for continuity between computers, but Steam Support says it generally cannot recover a lost save or resolve a cloud conflict for you. Treat cloud synchronization as one copy, not the only copy.

Layer 2: Keep an independent local copy
For every PC launcher, make a dated archive of the folders that contain saves, configuration, screenshots, mods and custom maps. The locations vary by game and operating system; consult the game’s documentation or inspect its user-data folders rather than assuming that the install directory contains everything. Preserve the folder structure and record which game and account each archive belongs to.
Use an external USB hard drive or SSD with enough free space for the selected files and at least one full platform backup. A hard drive is economical for a large library; an SSD is faster and more resistant to movement. Either can be deleted, encrypted by ransomware or lost, so disconnect the drive after the copy and store it somewhere separate from the gaming PC. A second offline copy protects against a failed drive or accidental deletion.
Layer 3: Secure the account that grants access
A perfect file backup is useless if someone takes over the account that owns the licenses. Use a unique, long password for every storefront and console account, enable the platform’s two-factor authentication, and secure the email address used for recovery. A password manager can generate and store unique passwords; a hardware security key is an additional option where the service supports it.
For Steam, enable Steam Guard. Valve calls it “an additional level of security that can be applied to your Steam account.” Review authorized devices and sessions periodically, and sign out everywhere if an unfamiliar device appears. Never give a password or one-time code to a person claiming to be support in a chat, and do not follow unknown login links. An attacker with the email account can often reset the game account, so protect email with its own two-factor method.

Back up Steam games and their saves
Use Steam’s game-file backup
Steam’s built-in tool copies eligible Steam-delivered game files to a destination you choose. It is useful when reinstalling a large game would take too long, but it is not a universal snapshot of your game.
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click the game, choose Properties, then open Installed Files.
- Select Backup game files.
- Choose the external drive or other destination and create the backup.
- Label the archive with the game name, date and the Steam account that owns it.
Valve warns that games using third-party installers or downloaders may not work with this feature. A backup can also omit saves, custom multiplayer maps, configuration files and other files created after installation. Copy those folders separately, including mod files that you would otherwise have to download or configure again.
Verify a Steam backup before you need it
Restoration is the test that matters. On a spare installation or a noncritical game, restore the archive, sign in to the owning account, launch the game and confirm that it reaches the expected save or menu. If the restored game starts without your progress, the missing data was probably outside Steam’s game-file backup and must be added to your separate save archive.
Understand Steam Cloud conflicts
Steam Cloud is configured by each title. Check the game’s store information and its in-client settings, but do not assume that a Cloud indicator means every file is synchronized. Offline play, a second computer or a failed upload can leave different local and cloud versions.

Before resolving a conflict, stop launching the game on both computers. Copy the local save folders from each machine, record their modification times and identify which contains the desired progress. Only then choose the local or cloud version in Steam’s conflict dialog. Keep the copied files until the game has loaded correctly and the new cloud state is visible on the other device.
Do not confuse local-network transfer with backup
Steam’s local-network transfer moves game content between PCs to avoid downloading it again. It is a migration shortcut, not a backup. It excludes local saves, configuration files, Workshop files, Steam Cloud files and shader files. After using it, copy saves and settings separately and retain an offline archive.

Back up a PlayStation 5
Use a dedicated USB backup drive
PlayStation’s PS5 backup process writes saved data and other console backup data to a USB storage device. Reserve and label one drive for this purpose, and check its free space before starting. To create a backup, open the PS5 system software’s Back Up and Restore area, select the option to back up the console, choose the data categories and start the operation. Do not disconnect the drive while the console is writing.
Restoring to another PS5 requires the same PlayStation account used to make the backup. Sign in with that account on the destination console, connect the backup drive and use the restore option in the same system-software area. Keep the drive until you have launched several restored games and confirmed the saves.
Do not use a PS5 extended-storage game drive as the backup drive
USB extended storage for installed PS5 or PS4 games uses a different format and purpose from the USB device used for a console backup. PlayStation states that an extended-storage game drive cannot serve as the console-backup drive. Maintain separate devices, or reformat a device only after copying anything you still need; formatting erases its contents.
A game installed on USB extended storage is not a substitute for a saved-data backup. Keep the console backup and any irreplaceable screenshots or captures on the appropriate backup device, and remember that the account is still needed to restore licenses and download games.
Move and protect Nintendo Switch saves
Cloud saves when changing consoles
Nintendo’s cloud-save workflow can present a mismatch when the console’s local save and the cloud copy differ. Before starting the game on the second console, download the newest cloud backup. If the service asks which copy should replace the other, stop and compare the timestamps and progress first. Choose deliberately; an overwrite in this workflow cannot be undone through the documented process.
Cloud-save availability is title-dependent, so verify that the particular game supports it and that the membership and account conditions for the service are satisfied. A cloud copy protects the save data, not necessarily screenshots, local settings or every piece of user-created content.

Transfer directly between nearby consoles
A nearby-console transfer requires the same Nintendo Account to be linked to a user on both systems. Keep both consoles powered, connected as instructed by the transfer wizard and signed in to the correct account. Confirm the destination user before starting, because moving a save to the wrong profile can make it appear to be missing.
Do not begin playing on the destination system until the transfer or cloud download has completed. Starting the game first can create a newer local file and trigger the same mismatch and overwrite decision you were trying to avoid.
Choose storage and keep copies recoverable
Capacity should be based on what you are actually archiving: save folders and settings usually need far less space than installed games. For a PC library, you can back up only saves and custom content and redownload the official game files, or keep full game-file archives when your internet connection is slow or capped. For PS5, use a USB device with enough free space for the categories selected by the console backup.
- Use a dedicated label: write the purpose, date of the last successful backup and the account or console it belongs to.
- Keep one copy offline: eject and disconnect the drive after each backup to reduce ransomware and accidental-deletion exposure.
- Keep a second location: store another drive away from the gaming setup if the saves are irreplaceable.
- Do not rely on a single format: a drive formatted for console extended storage may not work for a PS5 system backup.
- Record dependencies: note the launcher, owning account, game version and any mod manager or custom files needed to use the archive.
Test restoration instead of assuming it works
Schedule a small recovery test whenever you establish a new backup routine and after major hardware changes. Use a noncritical game so the test cannot damage your only good progress.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Choose one game with a known save and a manageable download size.
- Make a fresh local copy, then confirm that the archive contains files with a recent timestamp.
- Restore the game files or copy the save folder to a separate test installation.
- Sign in to the account that owns the license and allow the platform to finish synchronization.
- Launch the game, load the expected progress and check settings, controls and custom content.
- Document what was missing and update the routine before trusting it for an important title.
A successful download is not proof of a successful restore. The test must reach the correct save in the game itself.
A practical backup routine
- Inventory your library: list every storefront and launcher, the email attached to each account and the games whose saves matter.
- Check cloud support: enable supported cloud-save features and verify each important title rather than assuming the platform covers the whole library.
- Archive PC data: copy save folders, configuration, mods, screenshots and custom maps to a dated external archive. Use Steam’s game-file backup separately for eligible installed files.
- Back up consoles: create a PS5 USB backup on the correct type of drive, and download or transfer Switch saves before playing on a second console.
- Disconnect the drive: eject it, unplug it and store it safely after the copy.
- Test one restore: verify that the archive can produce a working game and the expected progress.
- Review security: confirm unique passwords, two-factor authentication, recovery-email access and the authorized-device list.
- Repeat after changes: make a new backup after installing a major mod, finishing an important game, changing computers or switching consoles.
Platform comparison
| Platform or method | Installed files | Saves and settings | Restore account | Conflict or exclusion to expect | Storage requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Backup game files | Eligible Steam-delivered game files | Not guaranteed; copy separately | Steam account that owns the game | Third-party installers or downloaders may fail; custom files may be omitted | Destination chosen by you, such as an external USB drive |
| Steam Cloud | Not a full installation archive | Supported saves, settings, profile statistics or other title-defined data | Steam account | Offline changes can conflict; lost cloud data may not be recoverable | Steam-hosted cloud storage for supported titles |
| Steam local-network transfer | Game content only | Excludes local saves, settings, Workshop files, Cloud files and shaders | Steam account | Migration convenience, not an independent backup | Two PCs on the local network |
| PS5 USB console backup | Other console backup data selected in the backup process | Saved data included in the backup categories | The same PlayStation account used to create it | Cannot use a USB extended-storage game drive as the backup drive | USB storage formatted for PS5 backup, with sufficient free space |
| Nintendo Switch cloud or transfer | Not a general game-installation archive | Supported cloud saves or saves moved between nearby consoles | The same Nintendo Account linked on the relevant user profiles | Cloud/local mismatch can cause an overwrite; confirm timestamps because the overwrite cannot be undone | Cloud service or both consoles present for direct transfer |
Common failures and the safest response
The restored game has no progress
Check whether the save was stored outside the installation folder, whether the game used a different operating-system user, and whether cloud synchronization replaced the local file. Stop launching the game, preserve the current folder, then try the separately archived save. Do not delete a potentially good copy while troubleshooting.

Steam shows a cloud conflict
Do not select the newest-looking option automatically. Copy both local and cloud versions if possible, compare their timestamps and in-game progress, and choose the version you intentionally want to keep. Launch only after preserving the alternatives.
A Steam backup will not restore
The title may use a third-party installer or downloader, or the backup may contain only official files while the save and custom content are elsewhere. Reinstall the launcher components if required, then restore the separately archived saves and configurations.
The PS5 drive is rejected
Confirm that it is the drive reserved for console backup rather than one formatted as USB extended storage for games. Check free capacity, allow the console to complete any required formatting and never reformat before copying data you still need.
The Switch offers the wrong save
Stop before confirming an overwrite. Verify the Nintendo Account, inspect the cloud and console timestamps and decide which progress is authoritative. If the wrong version has already replaced the other, the documented overwrite flow does not provide an undo, which is why downloading and checking first is essential.
An unfamiliar device appears on the account
Change the password from a trusted device, sign out other sessions, revoke unknown authorized devices and secure the linked email. Enable two-factor authentication and treat unsolicited support messages or login links as suspicious.
What a good backup plan looks like
For each important game, you should be able to answer four questions without guessing: where the save is stored, whether the title supports cloud synchronization, which account restores the license, and where the independent local copy is kept. Cloud saves make ordinary device changes convenient; local archives cover omissions and conflicts; account security keeps the library accessible. Together, those layers protect both your progress and the access that makes the digital library usable.
