To find out whether your PC can run an open-world simulation game, use that game’s current official requirements and compare them field by field with your computer: Windows version and architecture, processor, graphics card, video memory, system RAM, DirectX support, storage capacity and type, and any network requirement. A match for the minimum tier establishes compatibility only under the developer’s stated conditions; the recommended tier is a better starting point for the publisher’s target settings, but neither tier guarantees a particular frame rate on every desktop or laptop.
The most reliable check takes only a few minutes: copy the game’s requirement table, collect your specifications with Windows’ DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag), check the destination drive, then validate performance in the actual game. The process below also shows how to identify a CPU, GPU, memory, storage or thermal bottleneck when the game technically starts but stutters.

Start with the exact game’s requirements
There is no universal “gaming PC” specification for an open-world simulation. A driving sandbox, flight simulator and city-building simulation can stress entirely different parts of a computer. Use the named game’s official store listing or publisher support page, and note the date and edition of the listing you are using.

- Graphics-card model, graphics API and required feature level.
- Video memory (VRAM), if stated.
- Installed system memory (RAM).
- DirectX version.
- Free storage, including whether an SSD is mandatory.
- Broadband or other network access.
- Footnotes about online authentication, optional texture packs, launchers, peripherals or region-specific availability.
Keep the minimum and recommended rows separate. Replacing a named model with a vague label such as “mid-range GPU” makes the comparison less reliable because two cards with similar names can differ in architecture, VRAM and feature support.
Examples of how widely requirements vary
Steam’s 2026 listing for Forza Horizon 6 illustrates a demanding modern simulation profile: it specifies a 64-bit processor and operating system, Windows 10 22H2 or higher, 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, broadband internet, 167 GB of storage and an SSD requirement, with separate CPU and GPU models for minimum and recommended tiers.
The Steam listing for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 shows a different scale, listing Windows 10, 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12 and 50 GB of storage. These examples are not interchangeable guidance for other games; they demonstrate why the exact listing matters.
Collect your Windows specifications with dxdiag
Windows includes the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, which reports the information most requirement tables ask for. Bandai Namco’s support instructions say to click Start and enter “dxdiag” in the search box. Open the result named DirectX Diagnostic Tool; approve the prompt if Windows asks whether it should check driver signatures.
Read the System tab
- In
dxdiag, select the System tab. - Record the operating-system name and version, whether the system is 64-bit, the processor name, installed memory and DirectX version.
- Click Save All Information… if you want a text report you can keep beside the game’s requirement table. The report can also help a support technician identify a mismatch.
DirectX is the set of Windows components that lets software, especially games, communicate directly with audio and video hardware. A DirectX 12 entry confirms the installed runtime version, but it does not by itself prove that a particular graphics card supports every feature the game uses. The GPU model and its driver still matter.
Read the Display tab or tabs
- Select the first Display tab. Systems with more than one graphics adapter may show additional Display tabs.
- Record the graphics adapter’s complete model name, manufacturer, driver date and version, display memory and shared memory values.
- Check every adapter if the PC has integrated graphics plus a discrete card. A game may launch on the integrated adapter unless Windows or the game is configured to use the faster one.
Do not confuse total “display memory” with dedicated VRAM. Integrated graphics normally reserve part of system RAM and can report shared memory; their performance and available memory behave differently from a discrete card with its own VRAM. Compare the actual model and supported features, not just a memory number.

Check storage, operating-system details and network needs
Measure usable space on the installation drive
Open File Explorer, select This PC, and inspect the free space on the drive where the game will be installed. A published requirement is not a comfortable target: leave additional room for patches, temporary unpacking files, shader caches, save data and Windows itself. If the listing requires an SSD, installing on a hard disk can cause longer streaming delays or fail to satisfy the stated support configuration even when the game launches.
For a game listing that says 167 GB, for example, do not plan to fill a 200 GB drive to the last gigabyte. The requirement describes the game’s stated installation need, not the amount of free space that should remain afterward.
Confirm edition and architecture
In dxdiag, compare the Windows name, version and 64-bit status with the listing. A 32-bit operating system cannot satisfy a 64-bit-only requirement, regardless of how much RAM is installed. Windows updates can also change a version number, so use the current requirement rather than an old screenshot or forum post.
Plan for online access
If the listing calls for broadband internet, treat that as a requirement for the relevant game features, authentication or online world rather than as a suggestion. A fast PC can still fail to sign in, download updates or maintain a simulation session when the network, account or service requirement is unmet.
Compare the two lists without being misled by model names
| Requirement field | What to compare | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Exact edition, release and 64-bit architecture | Assuming any Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation is equivalent |
| CPU | Model, generation, core/thread behavior and sustained power limit | Comparing only the advertised GHz number or the “i5/Ryzen 5” label |
| GPU | Exact adapter model, architecture, driver and required API/features | Comparing only brand or total graphics memory |
| VRAM | Dedicated video memory against the game’s stated amount | Counting shared system RAM as dedicated VRAM |
| System RAM | Installed capacity and available memory while the game runs | Assuming unused RAM is available when browsers and launchers consume it |
| DirectX | Required version plus the GPU’s feature support | Using the runtime version alone as proof of compatibility |
| Storage | Free capacity, drive type and any SSD requirement | Checking capacity but ignoring a required SSD or update headroom |
| Network | Broadband, account and online-service conditions | Treating network requirements as relevant only to multiplayer |
How to interpret minimum
Minimum is the developer’s lower supported configuration under the conditions it publishes. It is a compatibility floor, not a promise of high settings, a stable frame-rate target, a particular resolution or smooth performance in every busy scene. On a laptop, the same nominal CPU or GPU can run slower because of power limits, cooling and battery mode.
How to interpret recommended
Recommended is a more useful starting point for choosing settings, but it still does not specify a universal result. Resolution, quality preset, traffic or world-density settings, frame-rate goal, patches and background processes affect the outcome. If your PC falls between the two tiers, expect to test settings rather than assume a fixed result.

Use the game’s workload to judge borderline hardware
Open-world simulations continuously stream terrain, vehicles, buildings, weather or non-player behavior while also rendering a view. That makes their limiting component change from scene to scene. A graphics card can be sufficient in an empty area but struggle in a dense city; a processor can handle a simple view but become the limit when simulation entities, traffic or physics increase.
| Comparison axis | Why it matters in an open-world simulation |
|---|---|
| CPU simulation performance | Controls world logic, streaming decisions, traffic, physics and draw-call preparation; one busy thread can limit frame rate. |
| GPU raster and ray-tracing capability | Determines rendering performance at the chosen resolution and visual effects level. |
| VRAM | Holds textures, geometry and render targets; insufficient dedicated memory can cause hitching or force lower texture settings. |
| System RAM | Stores the game, world data and background applications; low headroom encourages paging to storage. |
| Storage type and free capacity | Affects asset streaming, loading and the ability to install updates without filling the drive. |
| OS and DirectX compatibility | Determines whether the game and graphics features can initialize. |
| Thermals and power limits | Determine whether a laptop or small PC can sustain its rated performance. |
| Resolution, preset and frame-rate target | Define the workload your hardware must actually deliver; a requirement table rarely covers every combination. |
Install, measure and identify the bottleneck
Passing the requirement comparison tells you the game should be supportable; performance testing tells you what happens on your particular machine. Prefer the game’s built-in benchmark when one exists. Otherwise, use the same demanding scene—such as a busy city, airport or populated hub—after each change so the comparisons mean something.
Set up a repeatable test
- Restart the PC and close browsers, recording tools and launchers that are not needed.
- Choose a fixed resolution, preset and frame-rate cap. Write them down.
- Run the benchmark or repeat the same route for long enough to include streaming and the busiest section.
- Record average FPS and, if available, 1% lows or frame-time data. The average alone can hide short but severe hitches.
- Change one setting group at a time—resolution, shadows, reflections, world density or texture quality—then repeat the same run.
Steam’s performance monitor can show FPS, CPU, GPU, system-RAM and video-memory information while a game is running. Use it to see which resource is saturated instead of guessing from the average frame rate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Recognize a likely GPU limit
If GPU utilization is near full and lowering resolution or demanding visual effects produces a clear FPS increase, the GPU is the likely limit. Lower resolution, shadows, reflections, volumetric effects or ray-tracing features first. If VRAM is close to full, reduce texture quality or texture-streaming settings rather than lowering every option indiscriminately.
Recognize a likely CPU or simulation limit
If GPU utilization is low while one or more CPU threads are busy, and lowering resolution changes little, CPU performance or the simulation workload is more likely to be limiting frame rate. Try reducing traffic, crowd, world-detail or draw-distance settings where the game exposes them. A processor with many total cores can still be limited by a single heavily loaded thread.
Recognize a memory or storage limit
Low system memory can force Windows to swap data to storage. That often appears as repeated frame-time hitches, pauses when entering a new area and heavy disk activity even when average FPS looks acceptable. Close background applications, confirm that the game is using the intended drive and leave free space for the operating system and caches. Adding RAM can help only when memory pressure is actually the cause; it does not replace a weak CPU or GPU.

Recognize a thermal or power limit
When performance starts normally and declines after several minutes, check temperatures, fan behavior and power mode. Dust-clogged vents, blocked airflow, a soft surface under a laptop or a battery-saving profile can reduce sustained clock speeds. Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends adequate airflow and removing dust when heat is a problem. Test while the computer is plugged in, with its normal performance mode selected, and keep vents unobstructed.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat to do when the PC is below a requirement
Below the operating-system or API requirement
Do not treat a missing 64-bit architecture or required DirectX feature as a graphics-setting problem. Install the supported Windows version only if the computer and game’s license conditions permit it, and check the GPU manufacturer’s driver support. If the hardware lacks the required feature, a software toggle cannot create it.
Below the CPU requirement
Lowering resolution generally does little for a CPU-limited simulation. Reduce simulation-heavy settings, close background work and check sustained temperatures. A CPU upgrade also depends on the motherboard socket, firmware, cooling solution and power supply; identify those platform constraints before buying a component.
Below the GPU or VRAM requirement
Use a lower resolution and disable the most expensive effects, then retest. If dedicated VRAM is the shortfall, texture and asset-streaming settings are usually more relevant than reducing interface quality. A GPU replacement must fit the case, power supply, connector requirements and the monitor’s target resolution.
Below the RAM or storage requirement
Close memory-heavy applications and verify whether Windows is paging before deciding on a RAM upgrade. For storage, free space on the installation drive and an SSD requirement are separate questions: a large hard disk may have enough capacity but still fail the stated drive-type recommendation. Check the interface, physical format and capacity before replacing or adding a drive.

Laptop GPU names do not always perform like desktop cards with similar names. Manufacturers can configure different wattage limits, cooling systems and memory arrangements, and the computer may switch to an integrated adapter to save power. Compare the exact laptop model reported by dxdiag, run the test on AC power and select the manufacturer’s performance profile. Monitor sustained behavior rather than judging by the first minute after launch.
Best Value
Also check whether the game is running on the discrete adapter: in Windows graphics settings, assign the game’s executable to the high-performance GPU when the laptop exposes both integrated and discrete graphics. Recheck the Display tabs after changing the setting.
A practical decision framework
- All minimum fields match, with storage and network conditions satisfied: install only after reserving update headroom, then begin at conservative settings and measure a demanding scene.
- Most fields match but one is slightly below: identify whether it is CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM or storage. The appropriate setting reduction depends on that bottleneck; a generic “low” preset may not solve it.
- The PC meets recommended hardware: use the recommended tier as a starting point, not a guaranteed FPS result. Select the resolution and frame-rate target first, then tune the settings that the monitor shows are limiting.
- A hard requirement is missing: an unsupported 64-bit operating system, required API feature, SSD condition or network service cannot be solved by lowering image quality. Resolve that requirement or choose a different supported system.
- The game launches but stutters: capture CPU, GPU, RAM, VRAM, disk activity and temperatures during the same scene. Distinguish a saturated GPU from paging, streaming delays and thermal throttling before spending money.
Common mistakes that produce a false yes or no
- Using an old requirements page after a major update or confusing a sequel’s listing with the game you own.
- Comparing a CPU family label without checking the generation and exact model.
- Counting integrated graphics’ shared memory as dedicated VRAM.
- Checking total disk capacity instead of free space on the installation drive.
- Ignoring the SSD, 64-bit, DirectX or broadband footnote because the headline processor and graphics card appear adequate.
- Testing only an empty field or tutorial area and assuming it represents a crowded open world.
- Changing several settings at once, which hides which adjustment helped.
- Judging a laptop while it is on battery power, on a soft surface or after it has overheated.
- Assuming a minimum match guarantees a chosen resolution, preset or frame rate.
What a useful compatibility note should contain
If you are asking a support forum or another person for a verdict, provide the game’s exact edition and current requirements plus the complete dxdiag report or these fields: Windows version and architecture, CPU, GPU, dedicated and shared graphics memory, installed RAM, DirectX version, free space and drive type. Add your monitor resolution, desired frame rate, laptop power mode and whether the game is installed on an SSD. This information lets someone diagnose a specific mismatch instead of guessing from a partial model name.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I tell whether the game will run from my RAM amount alone?
No. RAM is only one field. You also need the operating system, CPU, GPU and VRAM, DirectX support, storage conditions and any network requirement. A PC with ample RAM can still fail a 64-bit, GPU-feature or SSD requirement.
Does meeting the minimum requirement mean I will get 60 FPS?
No. Minimum describes a lower supported configuration under the publisher’s stated conditions. It does not promise 60 FPS, a specific resolution, high settings or smooth performance in every open-world scene.
Why does lowering resolution sometimes not increase FPS?
That pattern suggests the workload may be CPU- or simulation-limited rather than GPU-limited. Confirm it by watching GPU use and CPU-thread load in the same scene; memory pressure and thermal throttling can also cause stutter.
Is shared graphics memory the same as VRAM?
No. Integrated graphics borrow system RAM, while a discrete GPU has dedicated VRAM. Compare the game’s VRAM requirement with the dedicated memory and the exact adapter model reported by dxdiag.
What should I record before asking for upgrade advice?
Record the game’s current minimum and recommended table, Windows version and architecture, CPU, exact GPU, dedicated and shared memory, RAM, DirectX version, free space, drive type, monitor resolution and your frame-rate goal.
