Open a game’s Steam store page, select Add to your Wishlist on the left, then manage the list from Store > Wishlist. Steam can notify you by email and/or mobile push when a wishlisted game enters Early Access or reaches full release. It can also send sale alerts when Valve’s documented discount conditions are met: at least 20% off, for more than eight hours, with the lowest-priced package discounted.
The practical work is to keep the right games on the list, verify your contact and device notification settings, and choose the Wishlist notification and category controls that fit how closely you want to follow releases, demos, and discounts.

What Steam Wishlist alerts can tell you
A Wishlist entry is more than a bookmark. It identifies the Steam account that should be considered for certain release and promotion notifications. The event, delivery method, and eligibility are separate decisions, so a game can remain on your list even when you do not want every alert.

Add a game to your Steam Wishlist
Use the game’s store page
- Open Steam in the desktop client or a web browser and navigate to the specific game’s store page.
- On the left side of the page, select Add to your Wishlist. Steam Support identifies this button as the standard way to add a game.
- Confirm that the control changes to show the game is on your Wishlist. If the page still offers the add action, check that you are signed in to the intended Steam account and try again.
You do not need to buy, install, or follow a game to place it on the Wishlist. The important condition for release and sale alerts is that the title is present on the account’s Wishlist when the relevant event occurs.
Check that the correct account is being used
Wishlist contents are tied to the signed-in Steam account. If you use more than one account, compare the account identity before adding a title. A game added while signed in to one account will not automatically appear on another account’s Wishlist, and an alert will be associated with the account that holds the entry.
Open, sort, and maintain the Wishlist
Find the list in Steam
- Sign in to Steam.
- Choose Store > Wishlist in the Steam client or in a web browser.
- Review the titles shown on the Wishlist page.
The same Store > Wishlist route is documented for both the client and the browser. If Steam’s layout changes, look for the Wishlist link within the Store area rather than assuming the list was deleted.

Steam lets you drag Wishlist items to change their order or assign a number beside a title. Put games that you are most likely to buy or monitor near the top, and move titles that are only long-term possibilities lower down. Reordering helps you scan the list; it does not change the documented release or sale eligibility of an individual item.

Use a maintenance routine
- Remove games you no longer intend to play so the list reflects genuine interest.
- Keep unreleased games you want to hear about on the list until their release or demo event has passed.
- Review the list before major shopping periods so an old entry does not create unwanted promotion messages.
- Use categories, when available, to separate near-term purchases, Early Access projects, demos, and titles you are merely tracking.
Prepare release notifications
Keep the Wishlist entry in place
Steamworks states that when a game releases either in Early Access or as a full release, users who have that game on their Wishlist at that time can receive an email and/or mobile push notification. Removing the title before the release removes the condition described in that documentation.
Verify the account’s email and device channels
- Use the Steam account’s current, verified email address. An unverified or inaccessible address cannot reliably receive an email alert.
- Review Steam’s email notification preferences and leave the relevant Wishlist messages enabled.
- If you use mobile push notifications, check the Steam mobile notification preferences and the operating system’s permission for Steam notifications.
- Make sure the device is connected and not suppressing notifications through a system-wide focus, quiet, or battery-saving mode.
The exact labels and location of these controls can change. The reliable principle is to check both levels: Steam’s account preferences and the phone or computer’s own notification permission.
Understand Early Access versus full release
Early Access and full release are distinct events. A title can generate a release message when it first becomes available in Early Access, and it can later generate another release-related event when it reaches full release, subject to Steam’s handling of that game and your Wishlist status at the time. Do not assume that an Early Access launch means the final-release message has already occurred.

- The discount lasts more than eight hours.
- The discount applies to the game’s lowest-priced package.
- The game is on the user’s Wishlist when the promotion is run.
This rule explains why a visible price reduction does not always produce a Wishlist email or push alert. A smaller discount, a promotion lasting eight hours or less, or a discount that does not apply to the lowest-priced package may fall outside the documented trigger.
What “lowest-priced package” means for your decision
Steam may list multiple purchase packages, such as a base game and a bundle. Valve’s condition is tied to the lowest-priced package, not simply to an expensive bundle showing a percentage-off label. When you are checking whether an alert should have appeared, compare the promotion’s treatment of the least expensive package with the 20% and duration requirements.
Keep expectations realistic
The documentation describes issuance of an email or mobile push notification; it does not specify a guaranteed delivery timestamp. Mail filtering, disabled account preferences, phone permissions, connectivity, and device power settings can all affect when you notice a message. Treat the Wishlist as the source of eligibility and the notification channels as delivery mechanisms that require their own settings.
Customize Wishlist notifications and categories
Use the notification controls Steam provides
Steam’s official Wishlist announcement describes controls for customizing Wishlist notifications and creating categories. Open the Wishlist area and look for its notification or management controls. Depending on the current interface, you may be able to choose which event types to receive and how categories are used for filtering.

Build categories around decisions
Categories are most useful when each one represents a different action. For example:
- Buy on a qualifying sale: titles you would purchase once the price meets your budget.
- Watch for release: unreleased games where the launch message matters more than a discount.
- Evaluate the demo: games for which a demo notification would change your decision.
- Long-term: interesting titles that should not dominate your active review.
Use the category filter to inspect one group at a time. Category organization does not change Valve’s 20%-and-more-than-eight-hours sale rule; it changes how you manage the list and, where Steam exposes the option, how you tailor notifications.
Choose email, mobile push, or both
Email is useful when you want a searchable record and do not need an immediate banner. Mobile push is useful when you want to notice a release or sale while away from your computer. Enabling both gives you two delivery paths, but it can also create duplicate messages. Select the combination that matches how quickly you need to act and how much notification volume you tolerate.

Wishlist visibility follows your Steam Community Profile privacy settings. Steam Support documents three visibility choices:

Changing visibility affects who can view the list; it is separate from whether Steam can use the list to determine release or sale-notification eligibility for your account.
Troubleshoot a missing release or sale alert
The game is not on the Wishlist
Return to the game’s store page and check the Wishlist state while signed in to the correct account. If the title is absent from Store > Wishlist, add it again. A bookmark in your browser or a follow action elsewhere is not a substitute for the Wishlist entry described by Steam’s documentation.
The release was Early Access, not full release
Check which event actually occurred. Steam documents release notifications for Early Access and full release as separate availability milestones. If the developer has only opened Early Access, the full-release milestone has not happened yet.
The sale was too small or too short
Compare the promotion with every documented threshold: at least 20% off, more than eight hours, and the lowest-priced package discounted. If any one condition was missing, the absence of a Wishlist alert is consistent with Valve’s stated rule.
Email did not arrive
- Confirm that the Steam account email is verified and still accessible.
- Check the account’s Steam email notification preferences.
- Search spam, junk, promotions, and other filtered folders for Steam messages.
- Confirm that the game was on the Wishlist when the event occurred.
- Allow for delivery delay; Valve does not publish an exact arrival time for each individual alert.
Mobile push did not appear
- Check that mobile push notifications are enabled in Steam’s available Wishlist or account controls.
- Confirm that the operating system allows notifications from Steam.
- Disable or adjust focus, quiet, battery, and background-data restrictions that could suppress delivery.
- Reconnect the device and reopen Steam if the phone has been offline.
The controls do not match these instructions
Steam can change menu labels, category options, and notification behavior. Start from the current Store > Wishlist page, inspect the Wishlist’s own management controls, and then check account and device notification settings. The documented concepts—Wishlist membership, release event, qualifying promotion, delivery channel, and profile privacy—remain the useful checkpoints even when the interface is rearranged.
Practical setups for different readers
For someone waiting for a launch
- Add the game from its store page.
- Place it in a release-focused category if categories are available.
- Keep email and/or mobile push enabled.
- Leave the title on the Wishlist until the Early Access or full-release event you care about occurs.
For someone hunting discounts
- Add every game you would buy at the right price.
- Organize the list by budget or purchase priority.
- Keep at least one delivery channel enabled.
- When a sale appears, verify that the lowest-priced package is discounted by at least 20% for more than eight hours before assuming a missing alert is an error.
For a private tracking list
- Set the Community Profile Wishlist visibility to private.
- Use categories to separate active purchases from long-term interests.
- Keep only the notification types that matter to you, such as releases but not every promotion, where Steam’s current controls allow that choice.
Limits you should know
- Steam’s documented triggers do not guarantee that every eligible alert will be noticed immediately.
- Email and mobile push delivery depends on verified contact details, account preferences, and device permissions.
- Sale alerts are conditional, not a notice for every price change.
- Menu names, category features, and notification behavior can change as Steam updates its client and store.
- Wishlist privacy controls determine visibility to other people; they do not turn the Wishlist into a purchase reservation or guarantee a future price.
The dependable workflow is therefore simple: add the title from its store page, verify it appears under Store > Wishlist, keep the appropriate delivery channels active, and evaluate sale alerts against Valve’s stated thresholds.
