The best Steam Deck settings are the lowest-power settings that hold a frame-rate target consistently. Start at 30 FPS for demanding games, 40 FPS when the game can sustain it, or 60 FPS for lighter titles. Set the screen refresh rate to the same value when the panel supports it, cap FPS in the game or SteamOS, then lower TDP and image-quality options until frame times stay steady.
There is no universal “best” profile. A game’s engine, patch, Proton version, resolution, brightness, and target frame rate change the result. Use the performance overlay and save a separate profile for each demanding game rather than applying one aggressive limit everywhere.

What to set first: a practical baseline
Use this order when configuring a new game:
- Leave the game at the Deck’s native 1280×800 resolution if performance allows.
- Choose a sustainable target: 30 FPS for demanding releases, 40 FPS for a balanced experience, or 60 FPS for lighter games.
- Set the display refresh rate to that target when the panel supports it.
- Enable an FPS cap in the game. If the game has no reliable limiter, use the SteamOS global limiter.
- Run the same busy scene for several minutes and watch frame time, not just the headline FPS number.
- Lower TDP gradually only after the target is stable, then reduce the settings that are limiting the CPU or GPU.
Valve recommends that every game use an FPS limit, either in its own options or through the global FPS limiter. A cap prevents the APU from rendering frames the display cannot show, which reduces power use and heat as well as avoiding unnecessary fluctuation.
Choosing 30, 40, or 60 FPS

Do not select 60 FPS merely because the panel can display it. If the game repeatedly misses 60, uneven frame delivery feels worse than a locked 30 or 40. Conversely, a game that holds 45 FPS can be a good match for an OLED panel using a 90 Hz refresh rate; use that only when the title really sustains 45.

Why matching refresh and FPS helps
A refresh rate that is an exact multiple of the frame-rate cap gives the display a predictable cadence. Steam Deck HQ describes matching values as smoother than sending frames at an unmatched half or quarter rate because each refresh receives a frame on a regular schedule. A 30 FPS cap at 60 Hz and a 40 FPS cap at 40 Hz are straightforward examples. Matching does not make a slow game faster; it improves pacing when the target is already sustainable.
Refresh-rate settings for LCD and OLED
Valve’s current specifications list a 1280×800 panel, with the OLED model supporting up to 90 Hz. The LCD configuration is limited to 60 Hz. Never choose a refresh rate above the panel’s ceiling.
LCD profile
- Use 60 Hz for a 60 FPS game.
- Use 40 FPS at 40 Hz only if your SteamOS version exposes that mode; otherwise a 40 FPS cap at 60 Hz can still work, but cadence is not as direct as a matching mode.
- Use 30 FPS at 60 Hz for demanding games; 30 divides evenly into 60 and is a common stable arrangement.
OLED profile
- Use 60 Hz for a 60 FPS target.
- Use 40 Hz for a 40 FPS target when the game holds it.
- Use 90 Hz for 45 FPS only when the game can maintain 45; 45 divides evenly into 90.
- Do not run a 90 Hz setting with a game that frequently falls below its chosen cap just to pursue a larger number.
To change the cap and refresh behavior, open the game, press the Quick Access button, open the performance section, and adjust the frame-rate limit and refresh-rate controls available on your model and SteamOS release. Some games also expose their own refresh or V-sync options; avoid stacking several conflicting limiters while diagnosing pacing.

Understanding TDP and the Deck’s power limits
Valve’s current technical specification gives the Steam Deck APU a 4–15 W power range. Steam Deck HQ describes the user-facing TDP control as 3–15 W. These are related but not identical figures: the first is the APU specification, while the second describes the range presented by the performance control. Treat them as separate references rather than combining them into one “official” minimum.
How to tune TDP safely
- Begin at the default value with your selected FPS cap.
- Play a repeatable demanding section for at least a few minutes. Check for frame-time spikes when entering new areas, fighting, or streaming assets.
- Reduce TDP by a small step.
- Repeat the same section. If the target remains locked and frame time is consistent, keep the lower value.
- Stop reducing when FPS dips, traversal stutters increase, or controls feel less responsive. Restore the last stable value.
TDP is not a universal battery switch. A GPU-bound game may lose performance immediately when power is cut, while a lightly loaded game may run unchanged at a lower limit. CPU-heavy simulation can also need power even when the GPU utilization appears modest. Use observed frame time to decide, not a fixed wattage copied from another title.

Finding the real bottleneck with the performance overlay
Enable SteamOS’s performance overlay from the Quick Access performance panel. At minimum, inspect FPS, frame time, GPU utilization, CPU utilization, temperature, and power draw while reproducing the slow section.
Signs of a GPU limit
- GPU utilization is near its ceiling while one or more visual settings are expensive.
- Lowering resolution or heavy effects produces a clear FPS gain.
- CPU utilization is not consistently saturated.
Lower shadows, volumetric lighting, reflections, ambient effects, and anti-aliasing before making a large resolution cut. If the GPU is still overloaded, lower the render resolution and choose an appropriate in-game scaler. A lower internal resolution with a good scaler can preserve a sharper interface than reducing every quality option indiscriminately.

Signs of a CPU limit
- GPU utilization falls while one or more CPU threads remain busy.
- Reducing resolution barely changes FPS.
- Large crowds, physics, simulation, or streaming events cause drops.
Reduce crowd density, view distance, simulation quality, and CPU-heavy world-detail options first. A lower resolution cannot remove a CPU bottleneck. Some traversal stutter is caused by shader compilation or asset streaming and may not disappear with a TDP change; allow shaders to build and retest after updates.
Reading frame time correctly
FPS is an average. Frame time shows whether each frame arrives evenly: 33.3 ms for 30 FPS, 25 ms for 40 FPS, and 16.7 ms for 60 FPS are the approximate ideal intervals. A profile that displays 40 FPS but periodically jumps to 50 ms can feel worse than a steady 30 FPS profile. Make decisions from the worst recurring spikes in the same scene, not a brief high reading in an empty hallway.

- Frame-rate cap and synchronization: Set one clear cap in the game or SteamOS. Disable a second limiter while troubleshooting unusual pacing.
- Shadows: Move from ultra to high or medium. Shadow resolution and cascade distance are frequent GPU costs with limited benefit on a small screen.
- Volumetrics and reflections: Lower fog, cloud, screen-space reflection, and water-reflection quality.
- Crowds and world density: Reduce these when the overlay shows a CPU limit.
- View distance: Lower it if distant geometry or object streaming is causing CPU or GPU spikes.
- Textures: Keep textures higher when memory permits; they often affect image quality more than frame rate, although streaming-heavy games can behave differently.
- Resolution and scaler: Lower internal resolution only after targeted quality reductions, unless the overlay clearly identifies a GPU bottleneck.
Native 1280×800 is the starting point, not a requirement. A lower resolution is appropriate when the GPU cannot sustain the chosen target, particularly with an upscaler that preserves edges and text better than a simple stretch.

The current Valve specification lists a 50 Wh battery and an estimated 3–12 hours of gameplay. Valve’s original LCD specification listed a 40 Wh battery and 2–8 hours. Those are broad estimates, not guarantees for a particular title. The original estimate was based on 30 FPS, 50% brightness, and 50% volume; uncapped rendering, a brighter screen, and louder audio discharge the battery faster.
- Use the lowest stable FPS target rather than leaving the game uncapped.
- Lower display brightness to the level your surroundings allow.
- Reduce volume when practical, especially with the built-in speakers.
- Lower TDP only as far as the game remains stable; an unstable profile wastes time and can cause repeated work during stutter.
- Close downloads and unnecessary background activity before comparing runtime.
- Use a per-game profile so a light game is not restricted by a demanding game’s settings.
Battery percentage is not a precise benchmark. Compare the same save, scene, brightness, volume, network state, and temperature, and allow the reading to settle for several minutes before drawing a conclusion.
Does Steam Deck run slower on battery?
Valve’s FAQ says its expectation is that performance is the same plugged in or on battery. That does not mean every battery condition is identical: charging behavior, temperature, a low battery state, or a particular game’s power management can change observed clocks. For a normal comparison, keep the same cap, TDP, refresh rate, and graphics settings, then check the overlay rather than assuming that unplugging automatically reduces performance.
Per-game profiles and update checks
Once a profile is stable, save its settings in the game’s SteamOS performance profile. Record the target FPS, refresh rate, TDP, resolution, scaler, and the few graphics options you changed. This makes it easy to restore a known-good setup after experimenting.

Recheck the profile after a major game patch, SteamOS update, graphics-driver change, or Proton-version change. A patch can move a title from GPU-bound to CPU-bound, alter shader compilation, or change which limiter behaves best. Do not assume that a profile that worked months ago remains optimal.

FPS is high but motion looks uneven
Set a single cap, then match the refresh rate where possible. Test 30 FPS at 60 Hz, 40 FPS at 40 Hz, or 45 FPS at 90 Hz on OLED. If the game has its own limiter, try that before the global limiter; if it lacks one, use SteamOS.
The game drops below the cap in busy scenes
Lower shadows, volumetrics, reflections, and crowd density, then retest the same busy scene. If the overlay shows a GPU limit, lower resolution or scaler quality. If it shows a CPU limit, reduce simulation, crowds, and view distance instead.
Lowering TDP made stutter worse
Restore the last stable TDP. The game may need short bursts of CPU or GPU power even if its average load appears low. TDP reduction is successful only when the chosen cap and frame-time consistency survive the change.

Check the model’s panel ceiling and SteamOS version. LCD hardware is limited to 60 Hz; OLED supports up to 90 Hz. A game or external display can also expose different modes. Do not force a value above the panel’s supported range.

Battery runtime is much shorter than expected
Check for an uncapped frame rate, high brightness, high volume, a demanding refresh rate, background downloads, or a game that is constantly loading the APU. The 3–12-hour current estimate and the older 2–8-hour LCD estimate are ranges across workloads, not a promise for one game.
Docked play, charging, and storage considerations
A USB-C dock is useful for external displays and their supported refresh rates, but it is not a handheld battery-life optimization. When docked, configure the external display’s resolution and refresh rate separately; the same 30/40/60 FPS matching principle applies, provided the monitor supports the chosen mode.
Valve specifies a 45 W USB-C power-delivery charger. It is a suitable replacement or travel accessory matching that specification, not an FPS upgrade. A faster charger cannot make the APU exceed its performance limits.
For additional game storage, the clearest hardware fit is a high-speed UHS-I microSD card, matching the Deck’s documented UHS-I slot support. Storage speed can affect installation and loading behavior, but it does not turn a 30 FPS game into a 60 FPS game.
A repeatable test method for comparing settings
- Choose one save and one repeatable route containing the game’s heaviest combat, crowd, or traversal section.
- Keep resolution, brightness, volume, network state, and power state unchanged.
- Apply one target and one refresh rate, then play the route long enough for temperatures and clocks to settle.
- Record average FPS, recurring frame-time spikes, input feel, temperature, fan behavior, and approximate power draw from the overlay.
- Change only one variable—such as TDP, shadows, or resolution—and repeat the route.
- Keep the profile that sustains the target with the best image quality and acceptable noise, rather than the profile with the highest short-lived FPS.
This method avoids misleading comparisons between different scenes or brightness levels. There is no independent, universally applicable benchmark that establishes one best FPS, TDP, or battery runtime for every Steam Deck game.
