To change Xbox privacy settings on a console, press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety. Choose Xbox privacy, select View details & customize, and change the permission you need. You can also manage the same controls through Xbox.com. A child account normally must be edited by the family organizer.
The available options depend on the account role, dashboard version and setting. The labels below match Microsoft’s documented experience, but a later Xbox update may place a control under a nearby privacy or online-safety heading.

What Xbox privacy and online-safety settings control
Xbox separates privacy from online safety, but both are reached from the same account area. Privacy choices determine who can interact with the account and who can see or receive shared activity. Online-safety choices determine whether the account can communicate, join multiplayer sessions, use cross-network play or share content.

Xbox can expose several related permissions in one category. For example, allowing multiplayer does not automatically allow voice chat, friend requests or cross-network play. Treat each activity separately and review every permission that affects the experience you want.

Change settings on an Xbox console
- Press the Xbox button on the controller to open the guide.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety.
- Select Xbox privacy.
- Choose View details & customize.
- Open the category that matches your goal, such as communication, multiplayer, cross-network play, content sharing or social connections.
- Select the audience or permission shown for each activity. Common audience choices are Everyone, Friends and Block, although not every control offers all three.
- Use the page’s Save, Submit or equivalent confirmation control when one appears, then close Settings.
Changes can take a short time to propagate to a game or another Xbox. Fully quit and relaunch the affected game if it still displays the old permission. If the account belongs to a family group, the setting may be visible but unavailable for editing; use the organizer procedure below.
Find social controls
For friend requests, following and club interactions, open Friends, followers & clubs after selecting View details & customize. Xbox documents this category as the place to decide who can send friend requests or follow the account. Set each audience independently; changing one social option does not necessarily change the others.
Control shared activity
Privacy audience controls govern what is shared with the public or with friends. Open the content-sharing or privacy section, inspect each item, and choose the narrowest audience that still supports the way you use Xbox. If a game has its own sharing switch, both the game setting and the Xbox account permission can affect the result.

Change Xbox privacy settings on the web
Microsoft supports managing Xbox privacy on either the console or Xbox.com. Sign in with the Microsoft account used for Xbox, open the Xbox privacy controls, change the relevant permissions and use the page’s save or submit action.

- Open Xbox.com in a browser and sign in to the correct Microsoft account.
- Go to the account’s Xbox privacy or online-safety controls. The exact page label can change as Microsoft updates its account site.
- Choose the permission category you need, such as communication, multiplayer, cross-network play, social connections or content sharing.
- Set the audience or permission, review the other related controls on that page, and submit the changes.
- Return to the console or restart the affected game if the old state remains cached.
The web route is useful when a controller is inconvenient or when an organizer is managing a family member. Verify the signed-in account before changing anything: an organizer can otherwise edit their own permissions instead of the child’s.
Enable online multiplayer
If a game reports that the account cannot play online multiplayer, inspect the account’s Xbox online-safety permissions. The key permission is You can join multiplayer games, located in the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One/Windows 10 Online Safety controls in Microsoft’s documented troubleshooting workflow.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety.
- Select Xbox privacy > View details & customize.
- Open the online-safety section for the relevant Xbox platform.
- Find You can join multiplayer games and set it to the permission that allows multiplayer, usually Allow or an equivalent positive choice.
- Check related communication and cross-network-play permissions if the game needs them.
- Save or submit, then quit and relaunch the game.
Multiplayer access is not the same as a subscription, a game license or a network connection. A game can still fail to connect when the account permission is correct if the title, network or service has a separate problem. The privacy setting is the first account-level check when the error specifically says the account is not permitted to play online.
When a family member cannot change multiplayer
A child or restricted family member may see You can join multiplayer games but be unable to edit it. In that case, the family organizer must sign in and change the permission for that member. The organizer workflow is described in the next section.

Turn off voice or text communication
Communication permissions are separate from the ability to join a multiplayer match. To reduce or block voice or text interaction, open Xbox privacy > View details & customize, then enter the communication and multiplayer category. Set the voice or text communication audience to Friends or Block, depending on whether you want to limit communication to known contacts or disable it through the account permission.
- Use Friends when communication with approved contacts should remain available.
- Use Block when the account should not receive the communication covered by that control.
- Review text and voice items separately; one may remain enabled after the other is restricted.
- Remember that a game can have an in-game mute or chat setting in addition to the Xbox account permission.
If another player can still be heard after the account change, check the game’s own voice-chat switch and the console’s active audio device. Account privacy controls determine permission; they do not replace a game’s local mute controls.
Disable or allow cross-network play
Cross-network play is a distinct online-safety permission. It governs whether the account can play with people using another network or platform when a game supports that feature. Open the communication and multiplayer or online-safety category and locate the cross-network-play item.

- Choose Allow (or the equivalent Everyone option) to permit supported cross-network sessions.
- Choose Block to prevent the account from joining those sessions.
- Leave ordinary multiplayer permissions enabled if the account should still play with other Xbox players.
- Save the change and restart the game so it requests a new session with the updated permission.
Blocking cross-network play does not necessarily block every multiplayer mode. It limits the cross-network portion of the experience; the exact effect depends on how the individual game structures its lobbies.

Manage a child or family member’s settings
Family organizers control safety permissions for child accounts. A child generally cannot override a restriction from their own profile, even when the console displays the setting.
- Sign in as the family organizer on the console or the Microsoft account web experience.
- Open Family settings > Manage family members.
- Select the family member whose permissions need to change.
- Open Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize.
- Adjust communication, multiplayer, cross-network play, social or content-sharing permissions.
- Save or submit the settings and have the family member restart the game or sign out and back in if the new permission is not recognized.
Use the member’s own profile when testing. An organizer changing settings while signed into a different account can make a correct change that appears ineffective because the game is using another identity.
Practical family choices

These are starting configurations, not universal presets. The available choices can differ for an adult account, a child account and a particular dashboard version.

Use the audience that matches the activity, not a single broad setting for the whole account.
- Everyone: Broadest access. Use it only for activities where open interaction is acceptable.
- Friends: Limits the activity to accounts connected as friends. It is a practical middle setting for social interaction and communication.
- Block: Prevents the activity covered by that permission. It does not automatically block unrelated activities.
Some controls use Allow or Block rather than audience names, and some accounts may show fewer choices. When the labels differ, read the activity description beside the control rather than assuming that a similarly named option has the same effect elsewhere.
Troubleshoot settings that will not change
The option is missing
Confirm that you opened Xbox privacy and then View details & customize, rather than stopping at the first privacy page. Dashboard updates can move a control into a nearby communication, online-safety or content-sharing subsection.
The option is locked
Check whether the signed-in account is a child or other family member. Only the organizer can edit a restricted member’s privacy and online-safety permissions. Switch to the organizer account and use Family settings > Manage family members.

- Recheck You can join multiplayer games in the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One/Windows 10 Online Safety controls.
- Check communication and cross-network-play permissions required by that title.
- Confirm that the game is using the account whose setting you changed.
- Save or submit again, then fully quit and relaunch the game.
- If the account permission is allowed but the error remains, investigate the game’s own requirements, the network connection and any service outage separately.
Voice chat is still audible
Review both voice and text permissions, then inspect the game’s in-game chat and mute controls. A console privacy permission can allow communication while a game-level setting controls whether a particular channel is audible.
Changes appear different on another device
Xbox privacy is account-based, but cached sessions and dashboard versions can display old labels or states. Sign out and back in on the affected device, restart the game and use the nearest current privacy label if the menu wording has changed.
Before you finish: a settings checklist
- Verify the Microsoft account shown in the profile menu.
- Decide whether the goal concerns communication, multiplayer, cross-network play, social connections or content sharing.
- Check each related permission instead of changing only the first item you find.
- Use the family-organizer route for a child account.
- Choose the narrowest audience that meets the player’s needs.
- Save or submit the page when prompted.
- Restart the affected game and test with the intended account.
Xbox privacy settings are most effective when treated as individual permissions. Set multiplayer, communication, cross-network play, social activity and sharing according to separate needs, and revisit them after a dashboard update because menu names and grouping can change.
