Does YouTube Music work on Garmin without a phone?
Yes, after you download playlists or podcast episodes to a compatible watch over Wi-Fi. You can then listen without a phone connection, but you cannot stream YouTube Music directly from the Garmin watch.
Garmin announced the YouTube Music app for compatible smartwatches on June 12, 2024. In that announcement, Garmin said the app offered access to “more than 100 million songs,” along with personalized playlists and podcasts for phone-free listening. That figure is Garmin’s description of the YouTube Music offering at launch, not a like-for-like measurement against Spotify or Amazon Music.
Google’s support guidance says Garmin users can download playlists and podcast episodes, browse their library, and control playback. The download requirement matters: having mobile data or Wi-Fi available near the watch does not turn the app into a streaming player during a workout. Select and store what you plan to hear first.
Does Spotify or Amazon Music work offline on Garmin?
Yes. Spotify and Amazon Music both support offline playback on compatible Garmin watches after content is downloaded. In each case, the download and account setup require connectivity; playback of stored content does not require the phone to remain connected.

Spotify
Garmin says its Spotify Connect IQ app syncs saved playlists on compatible watches with any Spotify Premium plan, including Duo, Family, and Student. Spotify’s support information says Premium users can download music and podcasts to a Garmin smartwatch and that the watch can play downloaded content only. A free Spotify account does not meet the stated Premium requirement for this Garmin download workflow.
Amazon Music
Garmin lists Amazon Music as an approved provider. Amazon Music Unlimited is the tier identified for normal access; Prime alone is limited to Amazon All Access playlists. After you authenticate the account and synchronize selected content over Wi-Fi, downloaded content plays offline.

For both services, phone-free playback should not be confused with phone-free setup. The watch needs to get the content and account authorization before it can play those downloads away from a connection.
What subscription do you need to download music to a Garmin?

Look up the model in Garmin’s Connect IQ compatible-device list and check for the specific provider app. “Garmin music watch” is not enough to confirm support: provider availability is model-specific.
- Install the service app. Use the Connect IQ Store to install Spotify, YouTube Music, or Amazon Music, whichever service you intend to use. If the app is not listed as compatible with your model, do not assume another music-capable model’s support applies to yours.
- Authenticate the correct subscription. Follow the app’s account sign-in flow, which may use Garmin Connect or a code shown on the watch. Make sure the account has the required tier: Spotify Premium, YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium, or Amazon Music Unlimited for normal Amazon Music access.

What can stop downloads or phone-free playback?

- The app is missing from Connect IQ. Recheck compatibility for the exact watch model and the specific provider. Support on one Garmin model does not prove support on another.
- The account will not authenticate. Confirm that you signed in to the account with the qualifying subscription. For Amazon, Prime-only access is limited to Amazon All Access playlists; Spotify requires Premium; YouTube Music requires YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium.
- The watch has no content to play offline. Confirm that downloads finished while the watch was connected to Wi-Fi and that the items you selected are the ones you are trying to play. These apps rely on stored downloads for watch playback, rather than streaming.
- You expected a playlist or episode to appear. Check that you selected it in the provider app and allowed synchronization to complete. The supported content types differ; in particular, Amazon podcast support on Garmin is not established by the available service information.
- There is not enough room for everything you want. Garmin watch storage capacity varies by model. Check the specifications for your exact watch and prioritize the playlists or episodes you most need; a universal download capacity cannot be stated.

Choose Spotify if your saved playlists and podcasts are already there
Spotify is a practical choice when the playlists you want to take offline are saved in Spotify and you have Premium. Garmin specifically describes syncing saved playlists, and Spotify’s support covers music and podcast downloads. Duo, Family, and Student Premium plans are included in Garmin’s stated eligibility, though each plan’s local terms still matter.
Choose YouTube Music if its library and recommendations are your starting point
YouTube Music makes sense if you already use its library, personalized playlists, and podcasts. Garmin’s integration launched in 2024 and supports playlist and podcast-episode downloads. Its limitation is decisive for people expecting online playback: the watch app does not stream, so you must prepare downloads before heading out.

Amazon Music is a sensible choice if your listening is already organized there and you have Amazon Music Unlimited for normal access. Prime may be sufficient for someone whose listening is limited to Amazon All Access playlists, but it is not equivalent to Unlimited for the Garmin use described here.
