Both YouTube Music and Spotify can play music offline on Android, but only with their paid music plans. Spotify is the more predictable choice if you want a clearly published allowance—up to 10,000 tracks on each of as many as five devices—plus selectable download quality and an Offline Backup mix. YouTube Music is better suited to listeners who use YouTube heavily, want downloaded music videos, or prefer Smart Downloads that automatically save recently played songs. Whichever app you choose, download over Wi‑Fi, leave enough storage available, and reconnect the app to the internet at least once every 30 days or the downloads can stop working.

The practical difference is control: Spotify gives you a hard library ceiling and detailed quality documentation, while YouTube Music bases capacity on your phone’s free storage and the length and quality of the files you save.

What do YouTube Music and Spotify require for offline listening on Android?

Music downloads are a Premium feature in both apps. YouTube Music requires YouTube Music Premium for songs, albums and music videos; Spotify requires Premium for music downloads. Podcasts follow different rules: YouTube Music says podcasts can be downloaded regardless of membership, and Spotify allows podcast downloads for free accounts.

Downloads are app-managed copies for playback inside the service. They are not a way to export ordinary MP3 or FLAC files for use in another player. Both services also require an occasional online check: YouTube Music and Spotify each say you must reconnect at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active and synchronize the library.

Which service lets me keep more music offline?

Spotify publishes a numerical limit; YouTube Music does not publish an equivalent track-or-device ceiling in its cited Android help documentation.

Offline feature YouTube Music on Android Spotify on Android
Music-download requirement YouTube Music Premium Spotify Premium
Published library limit Not stated in the cited Android help page; capacity depends on free storage, file length and quality Up to 10,000 tracks per device, across up to five devices
Automatic fallback Smart Downloads can save up to 200 recently played songs Offline Backup creates a playable mix from recent listens, queued tracks and related activity when connectivity drops
Required reconnection At least once every 30 days At least once every 30 days
Quality controls Audio and video quality controls; the cited page does not state a comparable maximum resolution or bitrate Selectable download quality; lossless playback up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC on supported devices, catalogs and accounts
Music-video downloads Supported for Premium members The cited offline documentation covers songs, albums and playlists rather than music-video downloads

Spotify’s 10,000-track figure is a service limit, not a promise that every phone can physically hold that many files. A long playlist in high quality can consume substantial storage before the account limit is reached. YouTube Music’s storage-based approach can be more flexible on a phone with abundant free space, but it gives you no single published number for planning a collection.

How do I download YouTube Music for offline use on Android?

You can save individual songs, albums, playlists, podcast episodes and, for Premium members, music videos. The controls below use the current Android terminology described by YouTube Music help; exact menu placement can move slightly between app versions.

Download a song, album or playlist

  1. Open YouTube Music and sign in to the account that has YouTube Music Premium.
  2. Open the song, album or playlist you want available without a connection.
  3. Tap the item’s Download control. For a playlist or album, downloading the collection saves its included tracks for offline playback.
  4. Open the app’s Downloads area to confirm that the content is present before you leave Wi‑Fi coverage.

Downloaded playlists can refresh daily in the background when the phone is connected to Wi‑Fi. That behavior is useful for a changing playlist, but it also means the contents can change over time; check the current download before a trip if a specific sequence matters.

Turn on Smart Downloads

  1. Open YouTube Music and tap your profile picture.
  2. Go to Settings, then the downloads or storage controls, and enable Smart Downloads.
  3. Let the app use your listening history to choose the offline mix.

YouTube Music says Smart Downloads can save up to 200 of your recently played songs on Android. It is an automatic safety net, not a guarantee that a particular album or playlist will be included. Deliberately download must-have items as well.

Control quality, data use and storage

YouTube Music provides audio and video quality settings, options to clear downloads and controls for whether downloads may use Wi‑Fi only or permitted mobile data. Higher quality and longer files occupy more space. The app’s available capacity is therefore determined by the phone’s free storage and the characteristics of what you save, rather than by a published track maximum.

  • View, access, and back up your phone’s files in one location with the SanDisk Memory Zone app
  • Relax knowing your card is backed by a 10-year limited warranty by SanDisk

If your Android phone supports an Android-compatible microSD card, adding storage can increase the room available for offline content. Check the phone and app’s storage support before buying a card; not every model permits app downloads to be placed there.

Download music videos when video matters

YouTube Music Premium supports downloads of music videos as well as audio. Video files are usually much larger than audio files, so set a sensible video quality and review free space before selecting a large video playlist. The Google Play description for Music Premium also highlights switching between audio and music-video versions of a track, which is useful when you want the same recording in either format.

How do I download Spotify music on Android?

Spotify Premium subscribers can download songs, albums and playlists for offline playback. Free accounts can download podcasts, but not music.

Save an album or playlist

  1. Open Spotify while signed in to the Premium account.
  2. Open the album or playlist you want to carry offline.
  3. Tap the Download switch or download icon shown on that page and wait for the download to finish.
  4. Test playback with the phone in airplane mode or with Wi‑Fi and mobile data temporarily disabled. This confirms that the files you need are actually available offline.

For a single track, use the download control wherever Spotify presents it; if the track is part of a playlist you already maintain, downloading that playlist is the straightforward way to keep the surrounding songs available too.

Choose download quality

  1. Open Spotify’s settings from your profile or the gear icon.
  2. Open Media Quality.
  3. Set the Download quality level that matches your storage and headphones.

Spotify documents selectable download-quality settings on Android. It also documents lossless playback up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC on supported devices, accounts and catalog tracks. Lossless availability can vary, so a compatible phone alone does not ensure that every recording will play losslessly.

Understand Offline Backup

Spotify’s Offline Backup is designed for the moment you lose connectivity without having prepared a playlist. It builds an offline-ready mix from recent listening, queued tracks and other recent activity. Treat it as a fallback: it does not replace downloading a known album, playlist or travel queue in advance.

  • Transfer files fast with up to 150MB/s[2] read speeds and SanDisk MobileMate USB micro 3.0 microSD card reader[6].
  • Load apps faster with A1-rated performance[3].

How long do offline downloads last without internet?

Neither service promises permanent offline access. YouTube Music says to reconnect at least once every 30 days to maintain downloads. Spotify likewise requires the account to go online at least once every 30 days so the library can sync and downloads remain active.

The check is tied to the account and app, not simply to whether a particular song was recently played. Before a long flight, road trip or time away from coverage, open each app on the internet, allow downloads to finish, and reconnect again before the 30-day window expires. If the deadline passes, restore a connection and let the app synchronize before expecting offline playback to return.

Which app gives better control over storage and sound quality?

Spotify is easier to plan around when quality settings and a defined track ceiling matter. YouTube Music is more dependent on the phone’s available space and on whether you save audio, video or both.

Control YouTube Music Spotify
Storage planning Free storage, file length and selected quality determine capacity; no fixed Android track/device maximum is stated Account allowance is up to 10,000 tracks on each of up to five devices, while the phone still needs enough free space
Automatic selection Smart Downloads: up to 200 recently played songs Offline Backup: recent listens, queue and related activity
Audio setting Audio quality can be managed, but the cited help page does not specify a comparable maximum Download quality is selectable in Media Quality settings
Highest documented lossless figure Not stated in the cited Android documentation Up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC on supported devices, accounts and catalog
Video storage Music videos can be downloaded; video quality affects file size Offline documentation cited here addresses audio tracks, albums and playlists

Use the lowest quality that sounds good on your headphones if storage or mobile data is tight. Choose higher quality only when you have the space and a playback chain that can reveal the difference. For YouTube Music, video downloads deserve a separate storage check because they can consume space much faster than audio.

What happens to podcasts on each service?

Podcast downloading is less restrictive than music downloading. YouTube Music says podcasts can be downloaded regardless of membership, while Spotify lets free users download podcasts even though music downloads remain Premium-only.

This distinction matters if you need spoken-word content for a commute but do not want a music subscription. It does not remove the 30-day online requirement for maintaining the app’s downloaded library, so reconnect each service regularly even when you mainly use it for podcasts.

Which service is better for common Android travel situations?

Choose Spotify for a large, planned music library

Spotify is the stronger fit when you are organizing many albums or playlists and want a published allowance to guide expectations. The 10,000-track-per-device limit, five-device coverage and explicit download-quality menu make it easier to estimate whether a collection will fit your account and phone. Offline Backup is an extra safeguard when you forget to prepare.

Choose YouTube Music for automatic discovery and video

YouTube Music suits listeners who want Smart Downloads to refresh a recent-listening mix, switch between audio and music videos, or keep music inside the broader YouTube ecosystem. Its lack of a fixed track ceiling can be advantageous when your phone has ample storage, but you must monitor free space yourself.

Choose based on the content you cannot replace

If a particular concert video, playlist sequence or album is essential, download it manually rather than relying on either service’s automatic feature. Smart Downloads and Offline Backup select content algorithmically; neither promises to include a specific item.

How can I prevent failed or incomplete downloads?

  • Download over Wi‑Fi before leaving: Start early enough for large albums or videos to finish, then verify them in the app’s Downloads area.
  • Check free storage: Remove old offline files or recordings when the phone is nearly full. YouTube Music’s capacity directly depends on available space and file quality.
  • Confirm the account: Music downloads require the paid music plan. Switching accounts can make previously saved music unavailable until the correct subscription account is active.
  • Reconnect monthly: Open the app online at least once every 30 days. This is required by both services.
  • Review data permissions: In YouTube Music, verify whether downloads are restricted to Wi‑Fi or allowed on mobile data. A Wi‑Fi-only setting can explain why a queued download has not started.
  • Lower quality for limited space: Spotify exposes a download-quality choice; YouTube Music exposes audio and video quality controls. Lowering quality can let a trip-sized library fit without deleting essential items.
  • Do not rely on automatic mixes alone: Smart Downloads and Offline Backup are fallback systems. Keep a deliberately downloaded playlist for flights, remote areas or other situations where replacement content is not acceptable.

What is the simplest decision?

Pick Spotify if your priority is a large, explicitly bounded offline library, selectable quality or an automatic fallback when you forget to download. Pick YouTube Music if Smart Downloads, music-video access, YouTube integration and storage-based flexibility are more important. In both cases, Premium is required for music, a monthly reconnection is mandatory, and a short airplane-mode test is the fastest way to confirm your Android phone is ready.

Frequently asked questions

Can I listen to downloaded music after cancelling Premium?

Music downloads are tied to the paid membership that authorizes them. If that membership is no longer active, do not expect the saved music to remain playable offline; podcast rules are separate and may still permit downloads on free accounts.

Will Smart Downloads choose the same songs every time?

No. Smart Downloads uses listening history, so the selection can change as your recent listening changes. Keep a manual download for anything you need to hear on a specific journey.
