YouTube’s automatic video thumbnails are suggested still frames from the video, not newly illustrated images. In a July 2026 announcement, YouTube said desktop Studio offers three suggested frames for both Shorts and long-form videos; creators can choose one, and some can instead upload a custom image. YouTube has not publicly explained how it chooses those candidate frames, so claims that it always picks the first, middle or most clickable moment go beyond what its documentation establishes.
What does YouTube mean by an automatic thumbnail?
In this context, “automatic” refers to YouTube making thumbnail images available from an uploaded video and suggesting frames that a creator can use. The creator-facing choices described by YouTube are stills from the video. That is different from designing a new thumbnail image or asking a generative tool to create one.

How does YouTube choose the automatic thumbnail?
YouTube has not publicly documented the rules its system uses to select suggested frames. Its published material does not establish the sampling timestamps, whether the system favors faces or sharpness, or whether it predicts clicks or engagement.
The YouTube Team’s July 24, 2026 announcement documents an interface feature: desktop creators can choose from three suggested frames for Shorts, matching the existing long-form-video choice. The number also should not be confused with the names of thumbnail image sizes in the Data API. The API’s default, medium, high, standard and maxres labels refer to image-size variants. That distinction matters if you are trying to understand what YouTube generated. A developer-facing image-size label says something about a thumbnail image variant, while the creator-facing choices let a person select among suggested video frames. How can you change a video’s thumbnail after upload?
For a video edit on desktop, YouTube Help directs creators to the video’s thumbnail controls in Studio. The available actions depend on whether you are selecting a suggested frame or uploading a custom image.
- Open the video details. In YouTube Studio, go to Content and select the video you want to edit.
- Open Thumbnail. In the video details, find the Thumbnail section.

Can you choose a thumbnail frame for a Short on a phone?
Yes. YouTube’s Shorts workflow in the mobile app lets a creator choose a frame before or after upload. The YouTube Team’s July 2026 announcement says mobile creators can pick any frame from the video in the app; the Android Help instructions also describe selecting a frame through the thumbnail edit control. Who can upload a custom thumbnail?
Custom-image upload is not necessarily available to every creator. YouTube Help says account verification is required for custom thumbnails. The July 2026 announcement introduced custom Shorts-image uploading for Partner Program creators and said availability would expand, but these statements do not establish that every verified account has the feature today. Why can the public thumbnail look different from the one you selected?
A thumbnail change can take time to show publicly. There is also a documented display difference for vertical videos: on specific browsing surfaces, YouTube may show an automatically generated 4:5 replacement for a vertical video that has a 16:9 custom thumbnail.
