Is You Are Empty Deck Verified?
No rating has been published yet. On 29 October 2026, the Steam compatibility endpoint returned resolved_category: 0 with no resolved items, and the store page showed no Verified, Playable or Unsupported badge. You can inspect the current result at Steam’s Deck compatibility report. “Unknown” means Valve has not finished or published its evaluation; it does not mean Unsupported.
The available community evidence is encouraging but very small. A Steam reviewer identified as Marvdny, after 5.5 hours on 27 October, wrote that the game works on Steam Deck and described it as smooth. ProtonDB’s summary records one report, a provisional Platinum tier, a pending final tier and inadequate confidence; the raw summary is available at ProtonDB’s app report. One report cannot establish a universal Proton version, frame rate or battery result.

Valve’s published bar for a Verified game is at least 30 fps at 1280×800 using default settings, but a Verified badge would not promise a locked 60 fps. No Valve write-up, overlay log, independent Deck benchmark or battery-minute figure has been published for this app. Expect the game to be technically capable of running; verify your own frame pacing with the Steam performance overlay.
Why should the Deck have enough hardware headroom?
Steam lists a very low minimum: Windows 10, a two-core Intel or AMD processor, 1 GB of RAM, a 1 GB VRAM GPU and 5 GB of storage. The original game’s requirements were lower still. Valve’s current Deck specification lists a 6 nm AMD APU with four Zen 2 cores and eight threads, eight RDNA 2 compute units, 16 GB LPDDR5 memory, a 1280×800 display and a 4–15 W APU power range. The Steam Deck technical specifications put the hardware far above the remaster’s stated minimum.
That does not make every frame perfect. The DS2 Engine is a 32-bit OpenGL 1.3 Windows program, and launch-week desktop reports show inconsistent frame pacing even on much faster PCs. If the game feels uneven, investigate the engine limiter, MSAA and Proton behavior before blaming the Deck GPU.
How do I install and configure You Are Empty on Steam Deck?
Install the Steam Absolute Edition and begin with SteamOS defaults. The game has no native Linux build, so Steam uses Proton automatically.

- Install the correct app. In Gaming Mode, search for You Are Empty: Absolute Edition (app 4760480) and install it. The listed storage requirement is 5 GB; leave additional room for shader and compatibility data, particularly on a 64 GB LCD model.
- Launch once with the default Proton selection. SteamOS normally chooses a current Proton version for this Windows-only title. Start from Gaming Mode rather than adding the old retail executable.
- Choose a controller preset. Open the game’s controller setup and select one of the three SDL presets. Absolute Edition supports XInput and PlayStation-style controllers, but preset remapping is not a full button-by-button remap system.
- Keep Shader Pre-Caching enabled. Valve’s Proton pipeline can re-encode some game videos into supported formats and deliver them through the shader-precache system. It is a safe default for a Windows game with cutscenes.

- Leave the display at native resolution. SteamDB records a native Deck resolution override. Use 1280×800; upscaling is unnecessary for this workload unless you are experimenting.

Use a capped, moderate configuration first. The settings below are starting points, not a measured universal profile.

Enable the added sprint option if the original walking speed feels slow. The developers warn that the levels were not designed around sprinting, so it is a comfort choice rather than a performance setting.
Should I use 40 Hz or 60 Hz on Steam Deck?
Choose 40 Hz/40 fps for steadier pacing and lower power use; choose 60 Hz/60 fps for a smoother camera and HUD when frame times hold. On an OLED Deck, a 90 Hz panel is available, but there is no evidence that this game benefits from targeting 90 fps.

PCGamingWiki notes that some enemy and crouch animations can appear to run at roughly 30 fps even when the game output is 60. A higher refresh rate therefore cannot make every animation look fully native to the selected refresh.

Launch-week reports indicate an engine or frame-pacing problem rather than a Deck-specific GPU limit. Players on systems including Ryzen 7 5800XT/RX 7800 XT, 9800X3D/7900 XTX, i5-6500/GTX 950 and i9-10900K/RTX 5070 Ti described random dips, micro-stutter or a swing from roughly 300 fps to 80 fps. One player found that the game’s own 120-fps limiter was smoother than an external RTSS cap, although 1% lows still fluctuated. Another player with an i5-4590T and GTX 860M later reported a solid 60 fps after an update without changing settings.

- Set the game’s own limiter to 40 or 60 instead of leaving it uncapped.
- Lower MSAA to 2x or disable it, then check the overlay again.
- Keep the SteamOS cap equal to the in-game cap; do not stack unrelated external limiters.
- Restart after a shader or compatibility-tool change and test the same scene, because a single hallway or effect-heavy room can expose pacing problems.
- If the issue began after a patch, try the current build first and report reproducible details to the developer rather than assuming the Deck is underpowered.
Do not treat a desktop report of 300-to-80-fps swings as a Deck benchmark, and do not promise a locked 60 fps without your own overlay evidence. The useful conclusion is that capping and modest MSAA are sensible mitigations for an engine issue seen across PC hardware.
Should I force Proton Experimental or GE-Proton?
Only change Proton when the default fails. Absolute Edition removed deprecated Win32 APIs and fixed the old DirectPlay thread-pool and AVI cutscene failures, so a forced compatibility tool should not be your first step.

How much does it cost, and how much space does it need?
The Steam storefront price observed on 29 October 2026 was $7.99 USD; the regional SteamDB snapshot showed ₹415 in India. Prices and regional taxes can change, so treat those as the October 2026 listings, not a permanent price promise. The installation requirement is 5 GB. A 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB Deck has ample room; a 64 GB LCD model should reserve extra space for shader and Proton compatibility files.
Steam reviews were listed as Very Positive, 92% of 314 reviews around the same date. SteamDB showed an 85.44% rating from 306 reviews (285 positive and 21 negative). Those are reception figures for the remaster, not Deck performance measurements.
What is different from the original game on a handheld?
The remaster’s fixes address exactly the problems that made the retail copy awkward on modern systems:
- Modern widescreen resolutions prevent stretched HUD, menus, weapons and videos.
- FOV is available in the menu instead of requiring unpacked Lua files.
