After an Xbox update, check Settings > System > Updates and confirm both update options suit your connection: Keep my console up to date and Keep my games & apps up to date. For overnight downloads, use Sleep on Series X|S or Instant-On on Xbox One, and make sure When Xbox is off, turn off storage is not selected. Review privacy and notifications separately: they have controls across the console, Xbox apps, Windows, and your phone. Microsoft has not said that system updates routinely reset these settings, so treat this as a post-update check—not proof that anything was reset.
What should you check first after an Xbox update?

- Updates: Open Settings > System > Updates. Review both update checkboxes and choose whether automatic game updates fit your bandwidth and data plan.
- Power and storage: Open Settings > General > Power options. Select Sleep if you want queued installs to continue while the console is off, and check that storage is not set to power down.
- Privacy: Open Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety. Review activity visibility, communication, multiplayer, and party-invitation controls.
- Notifications: Review console toasts and also check the Xbox app, Windows notification settings, Game Bar, or your phone as applicable. One surface can continue showing alerts when another is muted.
- New or moved controls: Check the October 2026 additions and relocated options described below, especially cloud-streaming downloads and startup settings.
There is no published survey establishing which settings players most often need to change after an update. The practical goal is to verify the controls that affect your own connection, account, and play habits.
How do I turn on auto update on Xbox?
Enable the two update options in Settings > System > Updates. Console updates can download and apply automatically; game updates are more selective than the label may suggest.

- Turn on Keep my console up to date to allow console updates to download and apply, including while the console is off.

Apps are covered automatically, but games played in the last 28 days are the games eligible for automatic updates. The console UI wording, reported by The Tech Gorilla in October 2026, says games update based on your current location. This means an older game you have not launched recently may still need a manual update when you return to it.
To check or install one manually, go to My games & apps > See all > Manage > Updates. For a specific game, highlight it, press the Menu button, and choose Manage game & add-ons.

It can, provided automatic updates are enabled and the console’s power and storage settings allow background work. Sleep is the clearest choice for queued downloads; Xbox One calls the comparable mode Instant-On.
On Series X|S, go to Settings > General > Power options and select Sleep for faster startup, remote wake, and queued downloads while the console is off. On Xbox One, use Settings > General > Power mode & startup and select Instant-On. Leave When Xbox is off, turn off storage unchecked: if selected, it cuts power to storage and prevents background installs from using it.
Shutdown (energy saving) is not the same as disabling all automatic updating: Xbox power-mode information, as reported by The Tech Gorilla, says it supports automatic console and game updates. But Sleep is the mode to choose when you specifically want a queued download to keep running after you turn the console off. Do not assume every game will download under every combination of power, storage, and update settings.

Why are my Xbox games not updating automatically even though auto-update is on?
First check whether the game is eligible for automatic updating, whether the console can access storage while off, and whether another activity is slowing the queue. Auto-update being enabled does not guarantee that every title downloads immediately.
- The game may be outside the recent-play window. Automatic game updates cover games played in the last 28 days; apps update automatically without that stated game limit.
- Storage may be powered off. Check that When Xbox is off, turn off storage is not selected, and that the intended power mode is active.
- A running or suspended game can constrain downloads. Xbox’s slow-download troubleshooting guidance, quoted by The Tech Gorilla, says “background downloads are constrained while a game is running.” Quit the game rather than leaving it suspended while waiting for a large install.
- The queue may need a manual start. Open My games & apps > See all > Manage > Queue and choose Install now for the item.
- A network or storage issue may be involved. Xbox recommends Ethernet for downloads. Remote Play or streaming can also slow console downloads; verify the connection and make sure there is enough free storage for the update to complete.
For storage headroom, The Tech Gorilla’s how-to recommends leaving at least 10 percent free, or about 50 GB. That is a published recommendation, not an official Xbox minimum. If a queue appeared to pause or stop unexpectedly before 28 October 2026, the October console update included a fix for that issue; install the update before treating a lingering symptom as a new setting problem.
Should you turn off game auto-updates on a data cap?
If your monthly internet allowance is tight, turn off Keep my games & apps up to date and accept the trade-off: you may have to wait for an update when you next launch a game. Xbox Support explains that with automatic game updates restricted, you are notified of available updates only when you launch a game or app and can update then or wait.
Automatic updates can consume substantial bandwidth. Xbox Support cautions: “If you’ve set your games to update automatically, chances are you’ve used a lot of network bandwidth recently.” Another consequence matters if you buy games or add-ons on a PC: “If you restrict your downloads and then buy games or add-ons on your PC, they’ll no longer install automatically on your home Xbox.” Install those titles from My games & apps > See all > Games.
When you keep automatic updates on, download time still depends on the file size and connection. The Tech Gorilla gives an estimate of about 1.6 hours for a 70 GB game at 100 Mb/s and about three hours at 50 Mb/s; those are published estimates, not a promise for an individual connection. For a faster queue, connect by Ethernet if practical, stop active games, and avoid Remote Play or streaming while the console downloads.

Which Xbox privacy settings should you review?
On the console, go to Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety. Review who can see your game history and activity, communication and multiplayer permissions, communication outside Xbox, and who can invite you to a party. Choose the access you actually want rather than assuming an update changed it.
You can also review your account on the web through Xbox privacy and online safety settings, or use My Xbox on the console or Xbox.com to view or edit personal information, privacy settings, and data-sharing preferences. Microsoft says Xbox data collection supports connections to games, content, and services, as well as curated offers, discounts, and recommendations. Recommendation controls are separate from notification controls; muting a toast does not opt you out of personalized ads or offers.
Microsoft’s Xbox privacy information says developers and publishers may receive information such as your gamertag, presence, play statistics, friends list, and in-game communications for installed network-connected games or apps. This sharing continues until you remove that title from all devices; some consent can also be revoked through Microsoft’s consent controls. Microsoft also notes that age or identity verification may change access to certain features if verification fails.
What about apps and diagnostic data?
Store apps require permission to access data from the console. Xbox Support explains: “When you download apps from the Microsoft Store on your Xbox, each app requires permission to access data from your console. You can use the privacy settings on your console to control what data Microsoft collects and how it’s used.” Revisit app privacy after a system update if new first-party or Store apps have appeared.
Optional diagnostic-data sharing has a separate control at Xbox managed data collection. Children’s accounts have optional diagnostic data collection turned off. Xbox child privacy starts at the most restrictive level by default; parents can manage account controls in the Xbox Family Settings app and under Settings > Account > Family. Xbox-specific family settings apply on console, Xbox on PC, and mobile, but may not apply on other platforms.

Think of notifications as a layered system: console pop-up toasts, Windows and Game Bar alerts, and mobile-app alerts each have their own controls. Xbox Support describes toasts as alerts for events such as new messages or incoming video calls, and documents controls for whether they appear, which types appear, where they appear on screen, and how long they remain visible.
For console toast placement, type, duration, and on/off controls, use the official Xbox Support page Manage Xbox and app pop-up notifications rather than relying on an assumed menu path. Its documented customization instructions are not reproduced here as a specific console click path. Xbox’s April 2026 notification update, described by Xbox Wire, added control over where Xbox notifications appear while you play.
Do not mute every alert indiscriminately. A July 2026 Home update added a What’s New tab listing features from the latest system update, and an Xbox service-alert notification can appear at the top of Home when services have an issue. Leave service alerts enabled if you want to know when a problem is on Xbox’s side.
Where do you change alerts on PC and mobile?
- Game Bar: Open Game Bar, choose the Settings widget, then More settings > General and select notification placement. The gamepad cursor option is on that General tab too.
- Xbox app on Windows: Review Settings > Notifications in the app for friend invites, party messages, and game updates. Then check Windows Settings > System > Notifications > Xbox. Quiet hours or Focus can suppress alerts even when the app’s own switches are on.
- Xbox mobile app: Review Settings > Notifications in the app, then confirm the Xbox app is permitted to send notifications in iOS or Android settings.
There is an important cross-app trap: Xbox Support warns, “If you turn the notifications off in one app but continue to get them, try turning them off in another app as well.” Locate the surface producing the alert before concluding that a setting did not stick.

How do you keep downloads running while cloud gaming?
On Series X|S, the public October 2026 update added a control to continue downloads while streaming when network conditions allow. Go to Settings > Cloud gaming > Streaming preferences and enable the download-while-streaming option if you want both activities to proceed together.
Xbox Wire announced the feature on 9 September 2026, saying downloads can continue while players stream “when network conditions allow”; the feature became public with the retail rollout beginning 28 October. Series X|S users are expected to see the largest gains. Turn the option off if cloud streaming becomes unstable on your connection. Cloud-played games are automatically added to My games & apps > Games; use the Menu button to remove one from the list.
What changed in the October 2026 Xbox update?
The public rollout began the evening of 28 October 2026. Along with the download fix and cloud-streaming option, several controls moved or arrived; check these paths if a familiar option seems to have disappeared.
- Startup animation and sound: Go to Settings > System > Startup to choose a startup animation generation. The play-without-sound control moved there.
- Voice Clarity: Find it at Settings > General > Volume & audio output > Additional options. The October public notes make the previously Insider feature broadly available; it is enabled by default in party chat and most games released since 2020.
- Remote Play display: Under Settings > General > TV & display options, choose 1440p or 4K UHD if you use the new 1440p or higher-bitrate Remote Play path and your display supports the chosen resolution.
- Disc-to-digital licences: Settings > General > Personalization > Games & apps opens a console-native experience for licences you no longer have access to.
- Home screen: Use the Menu button on a recent-games item to remove it, including from Play History. Press the right thumbstick on Home to enter immersive background mode.
- Local saves: The local game-save manager can display, sort, and delete unused local saves. Check before deleting; local save cleanup concerns storage, not account privacy.
What if Xbox hijacked your background?
If an event-themed image replaced your custom Home art, community reports in October 2026 describe disabling Show event themed backgrounds under Settings > General > Personalization > My background. Custom and dynamic art controls are also under My background, with the color and background choices nested in that section. This is a personalization control; the report of an event image replacing custom art came from community posts, not an official statement that every console behaves this way.

What is the difference between an available and a mandatory Xbox system update?
Xbox Support identifies available and mandatory updates as the two types you may see, and says updates can be obtained automatically or manually. The distinction is in whether Xbox presents the update as required, rather than in the privacy or notification settings discussed above.
Can I hide my Xbox gamertag and leaderboard scores from everyone?
No. Microsoft’s Privacy Statement, last updated in September 2026, says gamertags and scores shown on game leaderboards are public and cannot be hidden. Other data has separate privacy controls.

How long will Xbox Series X and Series S get security updates?
Xbox Support’s 2026 information says Series X and Series S are scheduled to receive security updates at least until 10 November 2028. That date concerns security updates and does not promise that every feature or game will remain supported for the same period.
