Yes. Many installed Xbox games—including single-player and local multiplayer titles—work without an internet connection after setup. The reliable approach is to finish setup and updates while online, set your console as your Home Xbox, install the games, and launch each one once before disconnecting. Digital access depends on the license and the game: cloud streaming always needs internet, and some downloaded games require a live connection.
Which Xbox games work offline?
Offline access depends on three things: how you got the game, which device holds its license, and whether the game itself requires a connection. A downloaded game file alone does not guarantee that the title can launch offline.

| Game or access type | Offline access | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Disc-based game on a disc-drive Xbox One or Series X | Often works, if the title supports offline play | Install it first and keep the disc inserted as the license check |
| Purchased digital game on your Home Xbox | Usually works if installed and the title supports offline play | Set the console as Home Xbox and launch the game while online first |
| Game Pass download on console | Can work offline temporarily; it is not an owned license | Keep the plan active, prepare the Home Xbox, and reconnect periodically |
| Windows PC game | Some games work offline | Enable Offline Permissions and launch the game online before disconnecting |
| Cloud gaming | No | Cloud gaming streams the game and needs an internet connection |
Microsoft’s Game Development Kit says, “Xbox is designed as a connected device, and the best experiences, such as multiplayer gaming and video streaming, require connectivity. However, the Xbox console supports many scenarios for offline play.” Microsoft also instructs developers: “Only mark your title as ‘Xbox network required’ if all modes of gameplay require connectivity.” That means the title’s design matters: a single-player campaign may run locally, while an online-only game or a particular online mode will not.
What do I need to do before disconnecting?
Prepare the console while it can reach Xbox services. A new console cannot be fully set up in airplane mode: guidance reported from Xbox Support says the first setup requires an internet connection for setup, system updates, and adding a profile.

- Complete setup and updates. Connect the console to the internet, add your profile, and install any system updates.
- Set this console as your Home Xbox. On the console, open Profile & system > Settings > General > Personalization > My home Xbox > Make this my home Xbox. This is the key step for offline access to digital licenses associated with your account.
- Install the games and finish their updates. For a disc, insert it and let the game install. For a digital or Game Pass title, download it. Leave room for any required content download.
- Launch each game once while online. This gives the game a chance to complete its first launch and license checks. Check the title’s Store listing or packaging for an Xbox network or internet requirement.
- Choose offline mode if you are deliberately disconnecting. Press the Xbox button, then open Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Go offline.
- Reconnect when you return. Use the same Network settings screen and choose the online option so the console can sync licenses, saves, achievements, and updates.
Do not switch to Go offline just because your home internet or Xbox service has a temporary outage. Xbox Support guidance reported by Lilach Bullock advises leaving the console set to online during an outage so it can reconnect automatically when service returns. Offline mode is for a planned disconnection, such as travel.
Why does the Home Xbox setting matter for digital games?
Microsoft’s digital-game rules assign each Store download both a device license and a user license. The device license attaches to one Home console, while the user license follows the account.
Microsoft states: “Each game you download from the Store has a device-based license and a user-based license. You can designate one console (excluding a cloud-based variant used for game streaming) as your ‘Home’ console, and the device license automatically attaches to it, even if you are purchasing from a different console.” On the Home Xbox, other people can use the device license even when the purchasing account is not signed in. On a different, roaming console, the account generally needs to be signed in and online for its user license to be checked.
An account can designate one Home console at a time. Changing it moves the device licenses to the new Home console; Microsoft’s Usage Rules allow up to five Home Xbox changes during a one-year period. Microsoft says: “You can change your ‘Home’ console up to 5 times during a one-year period; when you do so, all your device licenses will automatically move to, and operate only on, the new ‘Home’ console.” A console may be the Home Xbox for more than one account, but cloud-streaming consoles cannot be designated as Home consoles.
This distinction explains why an installed digital game may work offline in one household console but fail on a travel console. Installation puts the files on the device; it does not replace the license check. Microsoft’s general Usage Rules say access can be affected if a user fails to log in “sufficiently frequently to refresh your Digital Goods electronic licenses,” but the rule itself does not name a fixed interval.

Can I play disc games without internet?
Many disc games can be played offline on a disc-drive Xbox One or Xbox Series X once installed, provided the title does not require an online connection. A disc is a license check and installation source, not a way to bypass installation or an always-online requirement.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Xbox Support guidance reported by Bullock says disc games, like Store and Game Pass games, must be installed to the console drive before play. Keep the disc in the drive when launching unless you have a separate digital license. Some retail discs require a further content download; packaging may say “Requires content download” or “Requires internet.” Secondary reporting cites Crimson Desert and Spyro Reignited Trilogy as examples of discs with content-download needs. Conversely, an always-online title such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 or Diablo IV, examples cited by BGR, will not become playable offline merely because you own the disc.
A disc installation does not automatically create a permanent digital license. Microsoft’s Usage Rules for its newer Disc-to-Digital feature say, “The digital license remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc.” Keep possession of the disc even if a claimed digital copy lets you play without inserting it.
Does Xbox Game Pass work offline?
Some downloaded Game Pass games can run offline, but Game Pass is a subscription license, not ownership. You need an active subscription, an eligible title that remains in the catalog for your plan and region, and a prepared device; an installed file can stop launching if the license cannot be refreshed.
On console, Game Pass access is tied to the account, with the Home Xbox device-license sharing exception. On PC, prepare the device with Offline Permissions. Recent secondary guides from Kinja and BGR report a 30-day offline ceiling for Game Pass on console and PC, after which a device must reconnect to confirm the subscription. That interval is not printed in the Microsoft Usage Rules cited above, which instead require users to log in “sufficiently frequently” to refresh licenses. Treat the 30-day figure as a widely reported Support-document interval, not a guaranteed offline period for every game, plan, or device.

For context, Xbox listed U.S. Game Pass prices and included cloud hours as follows in October 2026. Prices and catalogs can change; the cloud-hour limits are announced to begin in November 2026.
| Plan | Price listed by Xbox | Catalog size listed | Monthly cloud hours from November 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | First 14 days for $1, then $9.99/month | 50+ games | 5 |
| Premium | First 14 days for $1, then $14.99/month | 200+ games | 10 |
| Ultimate | First 14 days for $1, then $22.99/month | 500+ games | 15 |
Plan prices and cloud hours checked Oct 2026; the first-14-days offer is a promotion, not a recurring monthly price. Team Xbox said 4% of Game Pass subscribers were expected to be affected by the cloud-hour change and explained: “We’re introducing this model because the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer.” Those hours concern streaming, not downloaded offline play. Xbox’s plan page distinguishes the two: “Download games to your XBOX console, PC, and supported handhelds, or stream on more devices including phone, tablet, TV, and VR headset.”
Which Xbox consoles can play physical games offline?
A disc-drive Xbox Series X or disc-drive Xbox One can use compatible game discs; the all-digital consoles cannot. The Xbox Series S product page carries the explicit warning: “Use with digital games only; console does not play physical discs.” The same limitation applies to the Xbox Series X Digital Edition, which has no optical drive.
| Console model | Disc support | Relevant published specification | Offline implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X Carbon Black | 4K UHD Blu-ray optical drive | 1TB Custom NVMe SSD; 12 TFLOPS GPU | Can install compatible discs; disc still required at launch unless a separate digital license applies |
| Xbox Series X Digital Edition | No optical drive listed | 1TB Custom NVMe SSD | Offline access relies on digital purchases or eligible downloads and Home Xbox licensing |
| Xbox Series S | No; digital games only | 512GB or 1TB Custom NVMe SSD | Offline access is download-based; a physical disc cannot be used on this console |
| Disc-capable Xbox One | Yes, on disc models | Not stated in the cited Xbox hardware details | Can install supported discs and use Home Xbox licensing |
For someone prioritizing offline access, a disc-drive Series X offers an additional path: compatible physical games can still work without relying on a subscription or an online digital-license check, subject to the title’s own requirements. Series S and Series X Digital Edition owners should plan downloads before travel and make sure their digital licenses are ready.

What is Disc-to-Digital, and does it help offline?
As of October 2026, eligible disc owners can claim a digital entitlement for some Xbox One and Xbox Series X games through the Disc-to-Digital feature. Xbox Wire announced the feature for Insiders on 26 August 2026, with testing beginning 31 August; WIRED reported on 19 October 2026 that it was open to everyone after a month of Insider beta.

Jason Ronald, Xbox VP Next Generation, said: “Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game.” Microsoft, as quoted by WIRED from Xbox Support’s Disc-to-Digital page, said: “playing any supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc while signed in will grant you a digital license of that game.” The reported on-console route is to open the game tile’s menu and choose Claim Digital License.
After claiming, the digital copy can be installed and launched without the disc in the drive. However, the license remains linked to possession of the qualifying disc; it is not permission to sell or give away the disc. Not every disc qualifies, there is no complete public eligibility list cited here, and Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs are excluded. A Series S cannot claim a license itself because it has no disc drive, but a qualifying license claimed on a disc-drive Xbox One or Series X can then be installed on a disc-less console under the digital-license rules.
What stops working when Xbox is offline?
Offline mode removes network-dependent services even when the game itself still launches. Before disconnecting, decide which of these features you can do without:
- Online multiplayer, parties, and chat: unavailable without connectivity. Games such as Fortnite and Roblox, and any title marked “Xbox network required,” will not launch in offline mode.
- Cloud gaming and remote play: require an internet connection because the game is streamed rather than running from a local installation.
- Store purchases and DLC: you cannot buy additional items from the Store while offline. Install purchased DLC and required updates beforehand.
- Updates: game and console updates cannot be fetched offline; a title may refuse to start until it is patched.
- Leaderboards: Microsoft’s Windows offline-play guidance says leaderboards are unavailable offline.
- Family Safety screen-time limits: Screenwise reports that time limits need Microsoft’s servers, although cached content ratings may still work.
- Sync and uploads: achievements may be earned locally and uploaded later, according to BGR. Save data also cannot sync while disconnected; a local save that exists only on a device is at risk if that drive fails before it syncs.
Local co-op and split-screen play are different from online multiplayer: they can work offline if the game supports them. A local Minecraft world is a common example; Minecraft Realms is an online service and needs a connection.

Windows offline play uses Offline Permissions rather than the console’s Home Xbox setting. Prepare the PC or Windows handheld in advance, and verify each game independently: some titles rely on a second launcher or always-online checks.

Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Documentation says restrictive PC licenses allow one offline device and the Microsoft Store/Xbox-app toggle can be changed three times per year. Xbox Play Anywhere titles can support two offline devices—one PC and one console. A Windows PC and a Windows handheld count as the same device class: Microsoft Support says, “You cannot set both a PC and a handheld device as offline simultaneously.” Enabling Offline Permissions on a new Windows device revokes the previous designation. Microsoft also warns that Store purchases and leaderboards are unavailable offline.
How much storage should I prepare?
Offline access depends on local storage because a game that is not installed cannot be played without downloading it. Xbox lists Series X models with 1TB or 2TB internal NVMe storage and Series S models with 512GB or 1TB; the available capacity affects how many large games you can keep ready for a trip.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesXbox Series X|S games need to be installed on the internal SSD or a compatible Storage Expansion Card to run at Series speeds, according to WIRED. Xbox One-generation digital games can run from an external USB 3.1 hard drive. Xbox describes Storage Expansion Cards as compatible with Series X and Series S; the Seagate Storage Expansion Card was released in November 2020. External storage can help hold a travel library, but move or install the games you need onto supported storage before disconnecting and verify that the title is in a playable location.
What is the safest offline-play checklist?
For a planned trip, use this checklist before leaving reliable internet coverage:
- Finish initial console or Windows-device setup and all system updates.
- Confirm the console is the account’s Home Xbox, or enable Windows Offline Permissions on the one intended PC or handheld.
- Install every title, required DLC, and available patch; do not assume a disc contains all playable content.
- Launch each game once online and check for an Xbox network requirement or a separate launcher sign-in.
- Pack the disc for disc-licensed games, or confirm the digital/Game Pass license and subscription are still valid.
- Leave sufficient local storage free and ensure the game is installed on storage from which it can run.
- Test the offline mode before travel, then reconnect afterward to sync saves, achievements, and licenses.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can two people play the same Game Pass downloads offline on different Xbox consoles?
Not as two independent offline licenses from one subscription account. The Home Xbox can share its device license with another user, while the account’s access on a second console is tied to the user license and normally needs an online check.
Should I switch my Xbox to offline mode during an internet outage?
No. If the outage is temporary, leave the console set to online so it can reconnect automatically when the connection or Xbox service returns. Use the offline setting for a planned disconnection instead.
