To manually update an Xbox One-family console, open Profile & system > Settings > System, then choose Updates or Updates & downloads and select the console-update command shown. To check the installed software version, go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info. The menu wording can vary by console software; Xbox Support documents the system-update settings path here.
The online Settings workflow is the normal way to check for and install an available update. A USB drive is not needed for that routine path. Keep the offline USB method for situations such as an online update that will not complete or a console showing a system-update recovery screen, and confirm the current Xbox Support instructions for the exact model and situation before preparing files.

Which update method should I use?
Use the online update from Settings for routine maintenance. It lets the console check with the update service and install a console update if one is being offered. An offline USB update is a fallback for cases such as an online update that will not complete or a console showing a system-update recovery screen.
| Method | Connectivity | Use case | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online update | The console must connect to the update service. | Normal manual update. | The console and an internet connection. |
| Offline USB update | The console does not need to download the package online during the procedure. | Update failure, limited connectivity, or a recovery screen. | A computer with internet access, the current Xbox Offline System Update package, and a USB flash drive prepared according to the current Xbox Support instructions. |
The two methods are not interchangeable shortcuts. The online method is a short settings workflow; the offline route takes more preparation because it involves downloading the correct package on a separate computer, extracting files, and transferring them to a prepared USB drive. The package or sequence may depend on the Xbox model and its starting software state. An offline update is therefore not a general shortcut for routine updates, and an instruction that worked for a different model or starting state may not apply to your console.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a routine check, start online even if you expect there may be no update. If the console cannot stay connected long enough to download an update, or it is already presenting a recovery screen, consult Xbox Support’s current offline-update instructions instead. The offline path still requires internet access somewhere: the computer used to get the current package needs to be online even when the Xbox cannot complete its own download.
There is no need to buy a USB drive just to try the normal online update. For the offline fallback, a prepared USB flash drive is one of the prerequisites; if you do not already have one that meets the current instructions, you may need to obtain one. No fixed price or minimum capacity should be assumed from older walkthroughs, because the current Xbox Support page controls the exact requirements.
How do I manually update an Xbox online?
Keep the console connected to the internet, then use the system settings to check for and install an available console update. You do not need to prepare a USB drive for this route.
- Turn on the Xbox and connect it to the internet.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller to open the guide.
- Select Profile & system, then Settings.
- Open System, then select Updates or Updates & downloads, depending on the wording displayed.
- Select Update console or the available console-update command. If the screen indicates that no update is available, there may be nothing to install at that time.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. The console may restart while the update installs, so allow the prompts on the console to guide you through the process.
The path is useful because it gives you a direct check rather than requiring you to infer the console’s status from a version number or an old release announcement. Menu names can differ between Xbox One-family models and software releases. Look in the system settings for the update area and follow the command the console actually presents; a wording difference alone does not mean the update failed.
If the console reports No console update available, the check has not necessarily failed. It means the service is not currently offering a newer console update to that console. Xbox Wire described the update control as greyed out when a console was already on the current release build in its July 30, 2016 update-rollout coverage: Xbox Wire’s explanation. That older example explains why a greyed-out control can be normal; it does not establish a current build number or rollout schedule. Rely on the status shown by your console rather than treating the older article as a current version list.
If instead the console displays an error, cannot complete the download, or enters a recovery screen, that is a different situation from a simple no-update status. Note what the console says, and use the current Xbox Support guidance for that message and your model. Consider the offline option only when the online route cannot complete or the console’s recovery instructions call for it.

Where do I find the Xbox system version?
The installed software or OS version appears in the console’s Console info screen. This is the place to check what is installed now, whether you have just updated online, completed an offline update, or simply want to record your version.
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Select Profile & system, then Settings.
- Choose System, then Console info.
- Read the software or OS version shown. Record it exactly, including build information if the screen provides it.
When writing the version down or sharing it while seeking help, copy the displayed value carefully instead of rounding, shortening, or substituting a date. The exact text is what identifies the software reported by the console. If build information appears alongside the version, include that too; the instructions do not require guessing a missing build number or translating the value into a release date.
The number identifies the software currently installed; it does not, by itself, tell you when that software was installed. A version screen and an update-history screen answer different questions. If you want update-history or release-note information, check the console’s update-status area when that information is available. A device-support article from CBSi likewise directs readers to device settings to check software versions: CBSi’s version-check guidance.
Do not assume that the newest number you find in an old online post is the right comparison for your console. Update availability can change, and a console’s own update-status area tells you whether the service is offering an update to that particular device at that time. Check the update area first; use Console info to record the version that is actually installed.

Use the offline system update only when the online route is not working or the console requires recovery. The current Xbox Support procedure should determine the package, USB preparation, and model-specific steps. Do not assume an old file name, package, or drive-size recommendation applies to every console.
- On a computer with internet access, open the current Xbox Support instructions for an Offline System Update. Confirm that those instructions apply to your Xbox model and situation before downloading anything.
- Download the package specified by those instructions. Prepare the USB flash drive exactly as directed, including the required formatting and file placement. The cited procedure describes an NTFS-formatted drive and extraction of the update files, but the current official instructions take priority.
- Connect the prepared drive to the console and follow the exact offline-update or recovery steps for your model and starting software state. Do not substitute an online-update step or a sequence copied from instructions for another model.
- After installation, return to Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info and check the installed version.
This fallback has more prerequisites than the online method: a separate internet-connected computer, the current package, and a USB drive prepared to the current requirements. It also has a greater risk of a package or sequence mismatch because model and starting software state can matter. If the Xbox Support page does not clearly match your console and recovery situation, do not guess based on a filename or an older third-party guide. Follow the current official instructions first.

The cited procedure describes an NTFS-formatted USB drive, but that does not make every NTFS drive or every package suitable for every Xbox. Confirm the official directions for the particular Offline System Update package and console. Package availability, exact file instructions, and model-specific steps can change, so this article does not name a package filename, build, minimum capacity, or universal sequence.
A third-party walkthrough describes the USB preparation process, but it should be treated as corroboration rather than the authority for current files or requirements: iTechGuides’ Xbox update guide. Package availability and exact steps can change, so do not proceed based solely on an outdated filename or instructions for a different model. Once the procedure is complete, verify the result in Console info rather than assuming that preparation or connecting the drive means the update installed.
What should I do if the update option is unavailable?
First distinguish a normal “no update available” status from an update that errors, stalls, or leads to a recovery screen. The right next step depends on which of those situations you see.
- The console says no update is available: The service is not currently offering a newer update to that console. The message alone does not mean the check failed. You can check the installed version in Console info, but the version number does not replace the console’s own update-status check.
- The update control is greyed out: A disabled control can be normal when the console is already on the current release build, as Xbox Wire explained during its July 30, 2016 rollout coverage. That is an example, not a current build-status source. Check the status wording on your console and do not use the 2016 article to infer today’s update availability.
- The console cannot reach or finish the online update: Recheck its internet connection and retry the ordinary Settings workflow. If it still cannot complete the update, consult current Xbox Support guidance for the console and the error shown. An offline update may be a fallback, but it requires the current package and exact model-appropriate preparation.
- The console displays a system-update recovery screen: Follow the recovery instructions for the specific console. An offline USB update may be appropriate, but the package and sequence are model- and starting-version-sensitive. Do not try a package simply because it is described as an Xbox update.
- The labels do not match these directions: Look under Settings > System for the update area; it may be called Updates or Updates & downloads. Follow the command your console displays rather than treating a label difference as evidence of failure.
- You want to know whether the update installed: Open Console info and record the software or OS version shown. This verifies the currently installed version, though it does not by itself provide the date of installation.
A useful way to avoid taking the wrong path is to note the exact status before doing anything else: no update offered, an online error or incomplete update, or a recovery screen. The first is generally a normal availability result; the latter two may require troubleshooting or recovery instructions. These cases should not be treated as equivalent, and switching to USB without checking the model-specific instructions can introduce a package mismatch rather than solve the original problem.
Online update vs. offline USB: what is the difference?
For most manual checks, the online method is the simplest choice because it uses the console’s settings and does not require a computer, downloaded package, or prepared drive. The offline method is useful when the console cannot complete the online update or is in a recovery situation, but it adds preparation and makes correct model matching more important.
| Consideration | Online | Offline USB |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | The console must reach the update service. | The console does not need to download the package during the procedure; a separate computer needs internet access to obtain it. |
| Typical role | Routine manual check and update. | Fallback for update failures, limited console connectivity, or recovery screens. |
| Preparation | Open the update area in Settings and follow the console prompts. | Get the current package, prepare the USB drive, and follow the exact current instructions. |
| Mismatch concern | Uses the update offered by the service to the console. | Package and sequence can depend on model and starting software state. |
| Verification | Check Console info after the update if you want to record the installed version. | Check Console info after installation as well. |
Both methods should end with checking the version in Console info if you need to know exactly what software is installed. Neither method makes the version screen a record of the last-update date; consult update status or release-note information where available for that separate question.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I manually update my Xbox?
Connect the console to the internet, press the Xbox button, then go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates or Updates & downloads. Select the console-update command shown and follow the prompts. Menu wording can vary.
Where do I find my Xbox OS version?
Open Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info and read the displayed software or OS version. Record it exactly, including build information if shown.
Why is Update console greyed out?
A greyed-out update control can mean the console is already on the current release build, as Xbox Wire described in a July 30, 2016 update-rollout article. Check the status on your own console; that older example does not establish current update availability.
Does the Xbox system version show the date of the last update?
No. The version identifies the software installed, not necessarily the date it was installed. Check the update-status area for history or release notes if your console makes that information available.
Can I tell whether my Xbox is current just by comparing its version number with one online?
A version number alone is not a reliable substitute for the console’s own update-status check, and rollout information can change. Use the update screen to see whether the service offers an update to your console.
Do I need a USB drive for a routine Xbox update?
No. The normal online update uses the console’s Settings update area. USB is for the offline or recovery path, not a requirement for an ordinary online check.

How do I update an Xbox One with a USB?
Use the current Xbox Support Offline System Update instructions for your model and situation. The process requires a computer with internet access, the package specified by Xbox Support, and a USB flash drive prepared exactly as directed. Do not rely on an old filename or assume a package applies to every model.
What is the Xbox Offline System Update?
It is an offline update route using an update package downloaded on a separate internet-connected computer and transferred on a prepared USB drive. It is a fallback for cases such as an online update that will not complete or a recovery screen, rather than the normal route for routine maintenance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The available instructions and sequence can depend on the model and the software state the console starts from. Confirm the current Xbox Support directions for your specific situation instead of assuming one package works for every console.
What should I do if the menu says No console update available?
That status generally means the service is not currently offering a newer update to the console; it does not by itself mean the check failed. Check Console info if you want to record the installed version.
The Bottom Line
For a normal manual update, use Settings > System > Updates or Updates & downloads and follow the console’s prompts. Find the installed OS or software version under Settings > System > Console info. Reserve an offline USB update for an online-update failure or recovery situation, and use the current Xbox Support instructions for the exact package and model-specific steps.
