Yes, the images published on May 8, 2025 appear to show an Xbox-branded handheld made with ASUS, but they did not establish a conventional, first-party Xbox console. Reports described a Windows gaming PC derived from the ROG Ally 2, with an Xbox-logo button and rumored 7-inch 120Hz display and eight-core AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor. The reporting also cautioned that a matching FCC filing could not be located. Microsoft and ASUS have since confirmed an ROG XBOX Ally family, making the leak directionally accurate while leaving its early specifications unverified.
Are the leaked Xbox handheld images real?
The photographs were real published images, but their provenance and final hardware status were not fully verified when Mashable reported them on May 8, 2025. Mashable said the pictures came from an Indonesian listing and later FCC imagery and appeared to depict an ASUS handheld carrying Xbox branding. The publication also noted that it could not find an FCC listing matching every reported detail.

EGW-News identified the material as Microsoft-and-ASUS “Project Kennan” imagery and repeated claims of a 7-inch, 120Hz screen and an eight-core AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip. Those are leak-era specifications, not independently measured performance results. CNET’s March 2025 reporting used the spelling “Keenan” and characterized the project as a PC-focused Windows handheld built with an outside PC-gaming manufacturer.
In other words, the images were credible enough to foreshadow the product family that Xbox later listed, but they were not proof that Microsoft had completed a traditional Xbox console designed and manufactured entirely in-house.

Is this just an ASUS ROG Ally with an Xbox button?
That is the most useful short description of the leaked hardware, with an important qualification: it appears to be a ROG Ally-derived Windows gaming PC customized around Xbox software and controls. The leak showed the familiar handheld-PC form factor and an Xbox-logo button rather than the architecture of a separate console platform.
Xbox’s current product page now lists the ROG XBOX Ally family. It describes Windows 11 Home systems that start in an Xbox mode, bring Xbox and other PC storefront libraries together, and support Game Pass games through downloads or streaming. That official positioning confirms the PC-handheld interpretation while adding a dedicated Xbox experience.

What did the leak claim, and what is officially confirmed?

The table separates what was rumored before launch from figures Xbox now publishes. A leaked processor name or refresh-rate claim should not be treated as a benchmark, battery result or confirmation that every prototype detail reached production.
Can the Xbox handheld play Xbox games locally?
It can run locally downloaded PC games and supports Game Pass downloads where the game and subscription allow it. It also supports cloud streaming, so an Xbox title does not necessarily have to be installed on the handheld. Because the devices run Windows 11 Home, they can access other PC storefronts as well as Xbox libraries.

That is different from a closed console: compatibility depends on the Windows version of a game, its control support, storage space and whether the title is offered for download or only through streaming. The official description promises library integration and Xbox mode, not that every console Xbox game runs natively on the handheld.
How does the Xbox handheld compare with Switch 2?
The most important difference is platform. The ROG XBOX Ally family is a Windows PC with Xbox services layered on top; Switch 2 is Nintendo’s dedicated console ecosystem. Nintendo’s official Switch 2 page provides the competing system’s launch and bundle information, while the Xbox page describes PC storefront access, Game Pass downloads and cloud play.
| Question | ROG XBOX Ally family | Switch 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Launch certainty in the May 2025 story | The photographed device was a leak; the family is now officially listed by Xbox | Nintendo’s announced console, launching in the period referenced by the May 8 report |
| Software model | Windows 11 Home, Xbox mode and multiple PC storefronts | Nintendo’s dedicated console software ecosystem |
| Game access | Local PC downloads, Game Pass downloads where supported, and cloud streaming | Nintendo software and services; the cited material does not establish equivalent PC storefront or Game Pass access |
| Display and core specifications | Official models range from a 7-inch FHD 120Hz LCD to a 7.4-inch OLED 120Hz model; memory and storage vary by model | Not stated in the cited material |
| Accessories named by the manufacturer | Premium case, ROG 100W Gaming Charger Dock, SanDisk microSD Express cards in 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities, and SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds for Xbox | Nintendo’s official bundle information; comparable accessory specifications are not stated here |
Choose the Xbox handheld concept if a Windows library, PC flexibility and Game Pass are more important than a closed console catalog. Choose Switch 2 if Nintendo’s software ecosystem is the deciding factor. The two products target different software models even though both are handheld gaming systems.
What does “just weeks before Switch 2 launch” mean?
It describes the timing of Mashable’s May 8, 2025 report. The wording places the leak shortly before Nintendo’s Switch 2 launch, but it does not supply an exact number of days. It should not be read as evidence that Microsoft timed the leak to counter Nintendo’s launch or that the devices launched simultaneously.

What is the ROG Xbox Ally release date and price?
The cited information does not establish a current price, retail stock position or a single release date for the ROG XBOX Ally family. Xbox’s product page confirms the family and its configurations, but availability and pricing can vary by market and change over time. Treat retailer listings as the authority for a purchase decision rather than converting the 2025 leak into a launch-price claim.
For buyers planning storage or travel, Xbox specifically names a premium case, a 100W Gaming Charger Dock and compatible microSD Express cards. Those accessory names are official product references, not evidence that every bundle includes them.

Why did Microsoft pursue a PC handheld?
Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said in June 2024, “I think we should have a handheld, too.” The later Xbox product messaging—“Handheld freedom for everyone”—shows the strategic direction: make Xbox services usable on a portable Windows PC rather than create a wholly separate operating system. Xbox mode is described as a dedicated handheld experience optimized for gaming, while Windows remains available underneath.

Does the ROG XBOX Ally require an internet connection?
No single connection rule applies to every game. Downloaded, compatible Windows games can run locally, while cloud-streamed games require a suitable internet connection and Game Pass streaming access.

Can I install Steam or other PC games on it?
The official description says the handheld combines Xbox and other PC storefront libraries, so it is positioned as a Windows PC rather than an Xbox-only appliance. Individual games still need a compatible Windows build and sufficient storage.
Was the leaked Ryzen Z2 Extreme specification confirmed?
No. The eight-core Ryzen Z2 Extreme figure came from 2025 leak reporting. The cited official product details confirm models, screens, memory and storage, but do not independently validate that leaked processor claim.
