Choose Essential for a lower-cost console subscription

Essential is the entry option for console players who want a smaller rotating library, online console multiplayer and cloud access without the higher Ultimate price. Its listed examples include Stardew Valley, Fallout 4 and Deep Rock Galactic. It is suitable when you mainly play on an Xbox console and do not need the largest catalog, bundled publisher services or the highest cloud allowance.

Choose Premium for a broader console library

Premium raises the headline library to 200-plus games and keeps cloud gaming, online console multiplayer, in-game benefits and rewards. Selected new Xbox-published games join within one year of launch, so it can suit players who are willing to wait rather than requiring a qualifying release on its launch day.

Choose Ultimate for the broadest bundle

Ultimate is the most extensive option: a 500-plus-game headline catalog, selected day-one releases, cloud gaming, online console multiplayer, EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. It is the logical choice when you will use several of those services or want the broadest console and cloud selection. “Day one” is selective, however, and the current Ultimate page excludes Call of Duty titles from that promise.

Choose PC Game Pass for PC-first play

PC Game Pass is focused on Windows PC games and lists a 300-plus-game catalog, selected day-one releases and EA Play. The US listing describes PC play and does not list the cloud benefit provided by Essential, Premium and Ultimate. If you need cloud gaming or console multiplayer, compare one of the other tiers instead.

How much does Game Pass cost, and are these prices permanent?

The figures in the table are the listed recurring monthly prices on Microsoft’s US pages accessed in 2026. Subscriptions continue automatically unless you cancel through your Microsoft account. Promotional offers can be limited, may not apply to every member and should not be treated as the normal monthly rate.

Prices are not globally uniform. Xbox’s April 2026 announcement says prices may vary by region. For context, the UK page listed Ultimate at £16.99 per month and the Canadian page listed Essential at CAD $13.99 when accessed; those are local examples, not currency conversions or predictions for another market. Check your country’s Xbox store before purchasing.

Because catalog size, benefits and prices can change, compare the live plan page with the games you intend to play. A lower-priced plan can be better value if it contains your regular games and you do not use the additional services in Ultimate.

Does Game Pass include cloud gaming?

Yes. The official plan pages checked include cloud gaming with Essential, Premium and Ultimate. PC Game Pass’s listed US benefits are PC-focused and do not include that cloud feature.

What changes in November 2026?

In its September 3, 2026 announcement, Xbox said that beginning in November 2026, the included monthly cloud allowance will be 5 hours for Essential, 10 hours for Premium and 15 hours for Ultimate. Xbox also said additional cloud playtime will be purchasable through the Xbox Store after the included hours are used. It has not yet published the purchase prices or all implementation details, and it says available hours, purchasing options and features may vary by market.

The announcement does not establish a precise day in November. Treat the month as the announced start window, not a confirmed billing date. Xbox said it expects the change to affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers; that is Xbox’s own estimate, and the announcement provides no independent methodology.

This announcement supersedes the older December 2025 getting-started guide’s description of cloud play when describing the announced 2026 limits. Xbox itself acknowledged the significance of the change: We recognize that introducing limits is a meaningful change, particularly for players who regularly spend more time gaming through the cloud. Which devices can use Xbox cloud gaming?

Cloud gaming works only in supported regions, on a compatible device, with a game enabled for streaming. Xbox’s December 2025 guide described play on Xbox One and later consoles, Windows PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, gaming handhelds, Steam Deck (then in beta), and Android phones and tablets. Operating-system requirements, supported countries and device support can change, so use the current Xbox cloud-gaming instructions for your location rather than treating that dated list as permanent.

You generally need a reliable internet connection, an Xbox account with the applicable subscription, and an input method supported by your device and game. A compatible Xbox controller is optional where touch controls, a keyboard and mouse, or another supported input method is offered; controller compatibility is device- and game-dependent. Xbox’s guide explains that some games people own outside the Game Pass catalog can be streamed, but that does not make every owned game or every subscription title cloud-enabled.

How to start a cloud session

1. Confirm that your country and device are supported on the current Xbox cloud-gaming page.
2. Sign in with the Microsoft account that holds Essential, Premium or Ultimate.
3. Open the Xbox cloud-gaming experience on your supported device and browse games marked as playable in the cloud.
4. Connect a compatible controller or choose the input method shown for that game.
5. Start the stream and monitor your remaining monthly allowance after the November 2026 limits are introduced.

If a game is missing from the cloud list, check its platform and catalog status rather than assuming your subscription is malfunctioning. A title can be available for console or PC installation while unavailable for streaming.

How do Game Pass catalogs and game availability work?

The plan-page counts are snapshots. Xbox can add or remove games, change platform support and offer different catalogs by country. Before you subscribe for one title, search the live catalog and apply its plan and platform filters.

• Plan: A game may be in Ultimate but not Essential, or in PC Game Pass but not a console plan.
• Platform: Console, PC and cloud versions can have different availability.

What does Ultimate’s bundle really add?

Ultimate combines the largest listed catalog with several partner benefits, but each benefit has its own catalog and terms. EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics are included services, not a guarantee that every game from those publishers appears in the main Game Pass library or can be streamed.

How do day-one releases work?

Ultimate includes selected day-one releases, not every new Xbox-published game. The current plan page specifically excludes Call of Duty titles from its day-one claim. Xbox’s April 21, 2026 price announcement says future Call of Duty games will no longer join Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch; Xbox said they would be added during the following holiday season, about a year later. Do not infer a universal launch-day guarantee from one qualifying game. Check the individual game announcement and the current catalog for its actual release timing.

Use this checklist before choosing a tier:

• Primary device: Console players need to consider online multiplayer; PC players should compare the PC catalog; cloud players should confirm device and regional support.
• Specific games: Search each title in the live catalog and confirm the plan, platform and cloud labels.

What happens when a cloud allowance or catalog listing changes?

For the announced November 2026 cloud change, Xbox says additional playtime will be sold through the Xbox Store after a plan’s included hours are used. The price, package sizes and any expiration rules were not yet specified in the announcement, so rely on the purchase screen in your market when those details appear.

Catalog changes are separate from cloud-hour limits. A game can leave the subscription catalog even if you have unused streaming time, while a game can remain in the catalog but lose cloud support. If continued access matters, purchase the game separately or check the catalog’s stated availability rather than assuming a subscription grants perpetual access.

How do I manage automatic renewal?

Plan pages state that subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled through your Microsoft account.
