When Xbox Game Pass expires, your subscription entitlement to catalog games ends. A game can remain installed on your Xbox or PC, but the files alone do not grant a permanent right to launch it. Microsoft says digital goods are licensed rather than sold, and Xbox defines Game Pass access as lasting only while the subscription is active and the title remains in the library.
You may regain access by renewing while the game is still included, buying that title separately where available, or using a compatible physical disc. Cloud gaming is not an escape from an expired subscription: it also requires an eligible plan, supported device, region and title.

What changes when Xbox Game Pass expires?
The important change is licensing, not necessarily storage. Game Pass grants a temporary entitlement to play games in its catalog. When the subscription expires, Xbox no longer has to authorize those catalog titles for your account, even if the game data is still on the drive.
Xbox describes the access boundary this way: subscribers can use games in the library until the subscription is canceled or expires, or until an individual game leaves the library. That creates two separate ways to lose access:

Either event can produce a locked-game message. The presence of an installed icon, saved shortcut or downloaded files is not proof that the subscription license is still valid.
Do I own games I downloaded with Game Pass?
No. Downloading a Game Pass title is not the same as purchasing it. Microsoft’s Usage Rules state that “All Digital Goods are licensed, not sold.” Your download gives the device game data to run while the account has the required entitlement; it does not turn the title into a permanent purchase.

Reinstallation replaces files, while the license check still sees an expired or otherwise ineligible subscription. A separate purchase, where offered, creates a different license path for that particular game.
Ownership language also needs care for purchased digital games. A standalone purchase is not the same as owning unrestricted software in the traditional sense; Microsoft still describes digital goods as licensed. It is nevertheless separate from the changing Game Pass catalog and is not dependent on that catalog entitlement.
What happens to downloaded game files after expiry?
Microsoft’s public Game Pass information establishes loss of access but does not promise that local files will be automatically deleted. A secondary guide reports that downloaded games commonly remain installed and then become unplayable when the entitlement ends. Treat that as commonly reported behavior, not a universal Xbox rule: results can differ by title, platform and license-validation state.
The safest expectation is that files may remain on the drive while the game is locked. If storage space matters, you can uninstall the title; doing so does not cancel a purchase or change the account’s entitlement. If you renew later, the console or PC may be able to use the existing files, but you should not assume that every title will validate without an update or a fresh installation.

Will my saves be deleted when Game Pass ends?
Game Pass expiry and save deletion are separate questions. The official pages available for Xbox do not provide a universal rule guaranteeing that every save is retained or deleted across every Xbox console, Windows PC game and save system.
Use the same Microsoft account if you later renew or buy the game, and allow any pending synchronization to finish before access ends. Xbox Wire says that, in the context of cloud gaming and streaming owned games, progress is saved and shared across platforms. That statement should not be expanded into a guarantee for every Game Pass title, every local save or every PC configuration.
Before the subscription end date, open the game while connected to the internet and wait for its normal save or synchronization indicator to complete. If a title has its own account system or separate launcher, confirm that it is signed in as well. Those precautions reduce the risk of leaving recent progress only on a device that you later reset or replace, but they cannot create a license to play an expired title.
Can a Game Pass game stop working before my subscription ends?
Yes. A title can leave the Game Pass library while your subscription remains active. Xbox warns that the catalog, features and availability change over time and vary by region, plan and platform.
Check the current Game Pass listing for the exact game rather than relying on when you downloaded it. A console edition may not have the same availability as a Windows PC edition, and a title shown in one country may not be offered in another. A change in plan can also remove a game from your included benefits without changing the game files on your device.
If a title leaves, renewing the same subscription later will not necessarily restore it. Renewal works only when that game is still included for your plan, region and platform. A separate purchase or compatible physical release may be the more stable option for a game you play regularly.
Does turning off recurring billing end access immediately?
Do not assume that switching off recurring billing has one universal effect. The Xbox cancellation process and the terms shown on your Microsoft account determine the relevant end date, and the available information does not establish a single immediate-or-end-of-period rule for every cancellation path.

Open your Microsoft account’s subscription page and read the displayed status and expiration date. If it shows a future end date, save that date and keep playing while the account still reports an active entitlement. If the account says access has ended, restarting recurring billing may not be enough if the title has also left the catalog.
Cancellation and expiration are therefore different from uninstalling a game. Removing the local files does not cancel the subscription, and canceling the subscription does not by itself prove that every local file has been removed.
What is different on Xbox, Windows PC and cloud gaming?
The core rule is shared across platforms: access depends on an active, eligible plan and a title that is available for that plan and platform. The practical requirements differ.
Xbox consoles
Console access is governed by the plan’s console benefits, the game’s current catalog status and your region. A title downloaded to internal or external storage still needs the account entitlement when launched. A compatible disc can provide a separate route for a game that has a physical release, subject to the disc and console checks described below.

Windows PC
PC Game Pass access applies to the PC catalog and its supported Windows versions, not automatically to every console or cloud benefit. A PC installation can remain on the drive after access ends, but the account must still have the required PC entitlement to launch the Game Pass version.
Cloud gaming
Cloud gaming requires a cloud-supported Game Pass subscription, a compatible internet-connected device and a title enabled for cloud play. Xbox also notes that cloud-gaming availability and plan features vary, and that cloud gaming is not included with PC Game Pass. Streaming therefore cannot bypass an expired subscription or a title that is unavailable in your region or plan.
Cloud play can avoid downloading a game when your entitlement is active, but it does not create a permanent copy. If the plan expires, the cloud service loses the same subscription basis as a local installation.

What can you do after Game Pass access ends?
Your best option depends on whether you want the whole catalog, one particular game or a way to play without installing it.

Renew Game Pass
Renewal is the simplest choice when you want several catalog games and the title is still listed for your plan, platform and region. It is a catalog-access decision, not a purchase of the games you downloaded. Check the current listing before renewing if one specific title is the reason you are coming back.
Buy the individual title
A standalone purchase can make sense for a game you expect to play for years. Verify that the edition you buy matches your platform and that the store listing is available in your region. Buying one title does not preserve access to other Game Pass downloads.
Use a physical disc
Search for the exact game title plus “Xbox physical game disc,” then check the generation, edition, region and console compatibility before buying. Microsoft’s rules describe disc-based licensing as conditional on continued possession of the qualifying disc, with eligibility affected by technical and licensing factors. A disc for an Xbox console version should not be assumed to provide a Windows PC license or a cloud entitlement.
Use cloud gaming when supported
Cloud gaming is useful when your plan, device, region and game all qualify. It is not a workaround for expiry because the streaming service itself checks for an eligible Game Pass entitlement.
How should you check access before the subscription ends?
Use these checks before relying on a Game Pass title for a trip, an offline session or a long-term playthrough.
- Open your Microsoft account subscription page. Review the plan name, status and displayed end date. Keep a record of that date if you turned off recurring billing.
- Check the game’s current Game Pass listing. Confirm the exact title, edition, platform, region and plan. Do not assume that a console listing also covers PC or cloud play.
- Launch the game while online. Let the title complete its normal account, update and save synchronization. If it uses a separate publisher account, sign in there too.
- Choose a fallback for important games. Compare renewing, purchasing the title or finding a compatible disc. For cloud play, verify device, connection and title support before the subscription expires.
- Plan storage separately. Leave the installation in place if you expect to renew and have room; uninstall it if you need space. Neither choice changes the license status.
Why is a downloaded game locked, and what should you check?
A lock after expiry usually means the account no longer has the catalog entitlement, not that the installation is corrupt. Before downloading again, check the account, title availability and platform match.

- Confirm that the console or PC is signed in to the Microsoft account that held the subscription.
- Check whether the plan actually expired or whether access is still available until the end date shown in the account.
- Look up the title again to see whether it left the library or changed platform or plan eligibility.
- If you purchased the game separately, verify that you are launching the purchased edition and account rather than the Game Pass license.
- For a disc fallback, insert the qualifying disc and confirm the console, edition and region requirements before reinstalling.
Reinstalling is a sensible troubleshooting step for damaged or missing files, but it cannot replace an expired entitlement. If the account and catalog checks do not explain the lock, use Xbox or Microsoft account support for the title-specific license state instead of assuming that the saved files are at fault.
What is the practical rule to remember?
Think of Game Pass as time-limited permission to use a changing catalog. The permission can end because your subscription ends or because the game leaves the catalog; the downloaded data may remain, but it does not become a permanent purchase. Protect progress by synchronizing on the same account, check the exact catalog and platform status, and choose a separate purchase or compatible disc when you need a more stable route to one particular game.

Can I reinstall a Game Pass game after my subscription expires?
