GeForce NOW is the more direct Steam Deck option because NVIDIA lists a Steam Deck app. Xbox Cloud Gaming also works, but Microsoft’s supported procedure is a browser workaround: install the community-maintained Microsoft Edge Flatpak in Desktop Mode, add Edge to Steam, and launch Xbox Cloud Gaming through that shortcut. The better service depends less on a universal performance winner than on two checks: whether the games you want are eligible and whether your internet connection meets the service’s target for the quality you expect. Xbox ties cloud access to eligible Game Pass plans and selected purchased games; GeForce NOW links supported game-store accounts so you can stream eligible games you own, plus supported free-to-play titles.

Which service is better on Steam Deck?

Choose GeForce NOW if you want a listed native Steam Deck app and your games are supported in the connected stores. Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming if the games you want are in Xbox’s cloud catalog or are among its supported purchased titles, and you are comfortable maintaining an Edge shortcut in SteamOS. Neither service streams every game in your library, and neither provider’s bandwidth figure guarantees smooth play on every home network.

Decision point Xbox Cloud Gaming GeForce NOW
Steam Deck route Microsoft Edge installed from Discover, then added to Steam as a shortcut from Desktop Mode. NVIDIA lists a Steam Deck app; confirm the current installation process and features in NVIDIA’s Deck documentation.
How games are supplied Cloud-supported games included with eligible Game Pass plans, plus selected owned or purchased cloud-playable games. Supported games from connected game-store accounts, including eligible games you own and supported free-to-play titles.
Published network guidance At least 10 Mbps; 5 GHz Wi-Fi recommended. Some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 FPS, 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 FPS, and 35 Mbps for QHD at 90 or 120 FPS on gaming handhelds; latency below 80 ms recommended.
Extra controller Optional; Steam Deck controls can be used. Optional; NVIDIA recommends a gamepad, while the Deck’s built-in controls can serve that role.
Main uncertainty Catalog, features and availability vary by title, region, plan and platform. Each game must be supported by GeForce NOW and by the linked store account.

These are provider requirements and descriptions, not a head-to-head laboratory benchmark. A 25 Mbps connection with high packet loss or unstable latency can feel worse than a slower connection that is consistent and close to the service’s data center.

How do the game libraries and ownership models differ?

The ownership question matters more than the logo on the launcher. Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW provide access in different ways, so make a title-by-title list before paying for either service.

Xbox Cloud Gaming: subscription catalog plus selected purchases

Xbox’s December 19, 2025 guide described cloud gaming as included with Essential, Premium and Ultimate plans. That guide quoted Essential at $10 per month and Premium at $14.99 per month at the time of publication, while describing catalogs of more than 50 games for Essential, 200-plus games across console, PC and supported devices for Premium, and 400-plus games with additional benefits for Ultimate. Those prices, catalog counts and benefits are dated claims; check the current Xbox plan page for your country before subscribing.

Xbox also says some games purchased outside the subscription catalog can be streamed when they are cloud playable. “Some” is important: ownership alone does not make a game available. Xbox warns that title counts, features and availability change by game, region, plan and platform. A game you own on another storefront is not automatically playable through Xbox Cloud Gaming.

GeForce NOW: connect stores, then check support

GeForce NOW is built around linking supported game-store accounts. NVIDIA describes the service as streaming games you own in those connected stores, together with supported free-to-play games. The title still has to be supported by GeForce NOW, and the relevant store/account combination must be recognized.

This model can suit a Deck owner who already buys PC games through supported stores and wants to stream them without installing them locally. It can also be frustrating when a game is absent from the supported list, even though the same game is present in your library. Verify every important title in NVIDIA’s current supported-games information before choosing a membership.

A practical eligibility checklist

  • Write down the exact edition of each game you intend to play; cloud eligibility can differ by version.
  • For Xbox, check whether the title is included with your current plan or listed as a supported purchased game.
  • For GeForce NOW, check both the game’s support status and the store in which you own it.
  • Confirm regional availability before buying a plan or changing your account setup.
  • Do not use the total number of games in a plan as a substitute for checking your personal shortlist.

How do I set up Xbox Cloud Gaming on a Steam Deck?

Microsoft’s Steam Deck instructions use Microsoft Edge in Desktop Mode and turn the browser into a Steam shortcut. The method works, but Microsoft explicitly says the Edge Flatpak is maintained by community contributors and that Microsoft does not actively maintain or officially support Edge on SteamOS. Keep that qualification in mind when troubleshooting updates or controller behavior.

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode. Open the Steam Deck power menu and choose Desktop Mode, then wait for the desktop environment to load.
  2. Open Discover. Search for Microsoft Edge and install the Flatpak package. Microsoft’s guide identifies this package as community maintained rather than an officially supported SteamOS component.
  3. Add Edge to Steam. In the desktop Steam client, use the option to add a non-Steam game and select Microsoft Edge. This creates the library shortcut you will launch from Gaming Mode.
  4. Grant controller-device access. Microsoft’s procedure instructs you to give the Flatpak access to /run/udev so browser-based cloud gaming can see the Deck’s controls. Follow the exact command or permission step shown in Microsoft’s current support article rather than substituting a different path.
  5. Configure the shortcut. Edit the Edge shortcut’s properties and apply the launch arguments supplied in Microsoft’s guide. Those arguments open Xbox Cloud Gaming in an app-like browser window and are part of the setup, not optional decoration.
  6. Return to Gaming Mode. Restart or switch back to Gaming Mode, find the Edge shortcut in your library, and launch it. Sign in to the Microsoft account that has the required cloud-play entitlement.
  7. Test controls and navigation. Start with the Deck’s built-in controls. Keep a mouse and keyboard nearby for setup and account screens; Microsoft notes that the touchscreen keyboard and trackpads can be used when those accessories are unavailable.

What to do if the Xbox shortcut fails

  • If the shortcut opens a normal browser tab instead of the cloud page, recheck the launch arguments copied from Microsoft’s guide.
  • If buttons or sticks do not respond, verify the /run/udev permission step and restart the shortcut after changing it.
  • If Edge disappears after an update, reopen Discover in Desktop Mode and confirm that the Flatpak is installed, then recreate or repair the Steam shortcut.
  • If a game is missing, treat that as an eligibility issue first: Xbox availability varies by title, plan, region and platform.
  • Because Microsoft does not officially support Edge on SteamOS, some failures may require community troubleshooting rather than a Microsoft fix.

How do I use GeForce NOW on Steam Deck?

NVIDIA’s download information lists Steam Deck among supported gaming-handheld devices. The exact installer and feature set can change, so use NVIDIA’s current Steam Deck instructions when you install or update the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm your account and games first. Sign in to GeForce NOW and identify the supported stores you use. Check that the games you want are listed as supported before spending time on installation.
  2. Install the current Steam Deck app. Follow NVIDIA’s Deck-specific installation path and any current permissions or sign-in prompts. Do not assume instructions for another Linux distribution apply unchanged.
  3. Connect your store accounts. Authorize the supported game stores that contain your eligible titles. GeForce NOW uses those connections to start cloud sessions; it does not turn every game in a store library into a playable title.
  4. Launch a supported game. Select it in GeForce NOW, complete the store sign-in if requested, and allow the cloud session to start. The first launch may include the store’s normal authentication or ownership check.
  5. Map controls if necessary. NVIDIA recommends a Bluetooth gamepad and notes that some games may need a controller or a wireless keyboard and mouse. Begin with the Deck’s built-in controls, then add peripherals only when a specific game requires them.
  6. Check the stream overlay. Watch for latency, packet loss and resolution changes while moving around a demanding scene. Use the results to adjust your Wi-Fi position or stream-quality target instead of assuming the Deck itself is underpowered.

What the native app does and does not mean

In a May 29, 2025 announcement, NVIDIA said its native Steam Deck app could stream at up to 4K and 60 frames per second when the Deck is connected to a television, with HDR10, DLSS 4 and Reflex on supported titles. That is a stated capability of the announced setup, not a promise that the Deck’s built-in display runs at 4K or that every game supports HDR, DLSS or Reflex. Your display, membership tier, game support and network all remain constraints.

What internet speed and latency do I need?

Both providers emphasize a stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection, but their figures target different quality levels. Compare the quality mode you actually want rather than treating the minimum numbers as a performance ranking.

Provider guidance Published target How to interpret it
Xbox Cloud Gaming 10 Mbps minimum; 5 GHz Wi-Fi recommended; some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. The 10 Mbps figure is a floor. A device that needs 20 Mbps for best quality may show reduced image quality or interruptions below that level.
GeForce NOW on handhelds 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 FPS. A sensible target for a 720p/HD-style stream at up to 60 FPS, assuming the connection is stable.
GeForce NOW on handhelds 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 FPS. More headroom is required for a 1080p-class stream at 60 FPS.
GeForce NOW on handhelds 35 Mbps for QHD at 90 or 120 FPS. This is aimed at a substantially higher-resolution, high-refresh target than the Deck’s built-in panel.
GeForce NOW latency Below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center recommended. Latency is separate from download speed. A fast but distant or congested route can still feel delayed.

Use Ethernet when the Deck is docked and practical; otherwise prefer a 5 GHz router with a strong signal. Avoid judging a connection from a single speed-test result: cloud play is sensitive to jitter, packet loss and congestion during the actual session. If quality drops, move closer to the access point, reduce competing traffic, or select a lower stream-quality target before blaming the service.

Which service gives better image quality and responsiveness?

There is no universal winner because the services expose different plans, codecs, data-center routes and game catalogs. On a clean connection, both can deliver a playable stream; on a congested connection, lowering resolution or frame rate usually improves consistency more than changing launchers.

When GeForce NOW may feel stronger

GeForce NOW’s published handheld targets extend to 35 Mbps for QHD at 90 or 120 FPS, and NVIDIA recommends latency below 80 ms. The native Steam Deck app announcement also describes advanced features on supported games and TV-connected 4K60 streaming. Those capabilities appeal to players with a high-refresh display, a docked setup or a library of supported PC titles.

When Xbox Cloud Gaming may be the simpler content choice

If the games you want are included in your current Xbox plan, the subscription catalog can be more straightforward than checking several PC storefronts. That convenience ends when a title is not cloud playable or is unavailable in your region or plan, so verify the exact game before assuming it is included.

Why the Deck’s screen changes the calculation

The built-in Steam Deck display does not need a QHD or 4K stream to look sharp at normal handheld viewing distance. A lower target that remains stable can feel better than a higher target that constantly changes resolution. Reserve the highest published modes for a connection and display that can actually use them, especially when the Deck is docked to a television.

Do I need a separate controller, keyboard or mouse?

No. The Steam Deck’s integrated controls can act as the gamepad for either service. Xbox says cloud play works with a variety of controllers, while NVIDIA recommends a Bluetooth gamepad and notes that some games may require a controller or wireless keyboard and mouse.

We’ve added a dedicated Bluetooth antenna to improve connections for multiple controllers. Whether using the built-in trackpads or the included external controller, this allows for precision play in everything from FPS to complex strategy games.

A second controller is therefore a convenience, not a prerequisite. It can help with local multiplayer, a docked television setup or a game whose control layout is awkward on the Deck. Keep a keyboard and mouse available for account sign-in, browser setup and titles designed around pointer input.

How much do the services cost?

Prices and entitlements change, so treat historical figures as context rather than a current quote. Xbox’s December 19, 2025 guide listed Essential at $10 per month and Premium at $14.99 per month and said cloud gaming was included with Essential, Premium and Ultimate. The same guide described different catalog sizes and benefits for those plans. Check the live Xbox plan page for your region, taxes and current catalog before subscribing.

GeForce NOW’s value depends on the membership limits and the games you already own in supported stores. The supplied provider material does not establish a current price table, so do not infer one from older plans or from another region. Compare the current membership’s session limits, queue priority, resolution and frame-rate allowances with your play schedule.

Avoid paying for the wrong access model

  • Choose Xbox when the majority of your shortlist is in its current cloud catalog or among its supported purchased titles.
  • Choose GeForce NOW when you already own supported PC games in linked stores and want to stream those purchases.
  • If your shortlist is split, calculate the cost of maintaining access to both rather than assuming one subscription replaces the other.
  • Recheck prices and catalog terms immediately before purchase; the dated Xbox figures above are not guarantees for October 2026 or any other date.

What are the most common Steam Deck problems?

Black screen or a shortcut that will not launch

For Xbox, return to Desktop Mode and verify that Edge is installed, added as a non-Steam game and configured with the launch arguments in Microsoft’s support procedure. For GeForce NOW, use NVIDIA’s current Deck installation instructions and confirm that the app and account sign-in completed correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Controls work in menus but not in the game

On Xbox, recheck the Flatpak’s access to /run/udev, then restart Edge. On either service, try the Deck’s default gamepad layout before adding a separate controller. A wireless keyboard and mouse may be necessary for games that do not expose a complete gamepad interface.

Image quality keeps changing

Check whether another device is using the same 5 GHz network, measure latency and packet loss during play, and lower the stream target. Xbox’s 10 Mbps minimum and GeForce NOW’s 15–35 Mbps handheld guidance assume a stable route, not merely a high advertised broadband tier.

A game is listed in my library but cannot start

Library ownership is not the same as cloud eligibility. Xbox limits cloud play to supported titles and plans; GeForce NOW limits sessions to games it supports through the connected store and account. Check the title’s current status and region before reinstalling software.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

How should you choose between Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW?

  1. Start with your games. Mark every must-play title as Xbox-cloud eligible, GeForce NOW supported, supported by both, or supported by neither.
  2. Pick the access model you prefer. Xbox emphasizes a subscription catalog with selected purchased games; GeForce NOW emphasizes streaming supported games you own through linked stores.
  3. Evaluate setup tolerance. GeForce NOW has a listed Deck app. Xbox requires the Edge Flatpak and a Steam shortcut, with Microsoft’s explicit SteamOS-support caveat.
  4. Measure your connection. Compare your real latency, stability and Wi-Fi conditions with the providers’ guidance, not just your advertised download speed.
  5. Match the display to the target. A handheld screen may favor a stable HD stream; a docked TV and supported game can make higher-resolution GeForce NOW modes more useful.
  6. Buy only after checking current terms. Catalogs, prices, supported regions and features change over time.

For most Steam Deck owners, GeForce NOW is the cleaner technical route because NVIDIA provides a listed Deck app and a store-linked model. Xbox Cloud Gaming can be the better content value when its current plan and cloud catalog contain the games you actually want, but its browser setup and community-maintained Edge package add maintenance that GeForce NOW’s native route avoids.

What changed in Xbox cloud gaming recently?

Xbox Wire reported on December 19, 2025, that cloud gaming hours had risen 45 percent compared with the same period a year earlier as the service expanded to more players. That statistic describes Xbox’s reported year-over-year growth, not a promise of faster streaming or broader access for every Deck owner. Availability still depends on the title, plan, platform and region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play a Steam purchase through Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Not automatically. Xbox cloud access applies to selected titles that Microsoft identifies as cloud playable, and a purchase made in a different PC storefront does not transfer into the Xbox catalog. Check the exact game and account combination before assuming your Steam copy is usable.

Does GeForce NOW download my games onto the Steam Deck?

The service streams supported games from connected store accounts rather than turning the Deck into the game’s installation drive. You still need the appropriate store ownership or free-to-play entitlement, and the title must be supported by GeForce NOW.

Can I use either service when the Deck is connected to a television?

Yes, provided the app or browser setup is working and the network can sustain the stream. NVIDIA’s May 29, 2025 announcement specifically described up to 4K at 60 frames per second for its native Deck app when connected to a TV, with HDR10, DLSS 4 and Reflex on supported titles; that capability does not apply to every game or to the Deck’s built-in screen.

What should I verify before subscribing from outside the United States?

Check the provider’s current plan page, supported-game list and regional availability for your country. Prices, catalogs, cloud features and even title access can vary by region, so a plan description published for another market is not a reliable quote for yours.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
