You can play Xbox games on a Windows PC, Mac, phone, tablet, or Chromebook without installing the game by opening xbox.com/play in a supported browser, signing in, choosing a cloud-enabled title, and using a compatible controller or the game’s supported touch or mouse-and-keyboard controls. Windows also has an Xbox PC app route. Most subscription-catalog games require an eligible Game Pass plan, while selected free-to-play titles can work with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Cloud streaming is separate from downloading a PC game: the browser or app streams a playable session instead of installing the full game locally.
What do I need before starting Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Three checks prevent most failed starts: your account and plan, the game’s cloud eligibility, and your device and connection. Xbox lists Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Safari as supported browser examples, but a supported browser by itself does not guarantee access. Region, device, account, subscription, input method, and network conditions all matter.

Recommended Free Tools
- A Microsoft account: Sign in at xbox.com/play. A paid plan is not required for every title; selected free-to-play games are available with a free account in supported regions.
- An eligible Game Pass plan for subscription games: The current US Xbox page lists Essential, Premium, and Ultimate with cloud-play allowances. PC Game Pass is for installing and playing PC games locally and is not, by itself, the cloud-gaming subscription.
- A cloud-enabled game: A game appearing in a Game Pass library is not automatically streamable. Look for the cloud option on the title’s page, and recheck the live catalog because availability changes by region, plan, platform, and time.
- Suitable controls: A compatible controller is the standard choice. Some titles provide touch controls, and a smaller set supports mouse and keyboard.
- A reliable connection: Xbox identifies 10 Mbps on mobile and 20 Mbps on PCs and tablets as best-performance rates, recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and says location, device, and connection conditions affect the stream.
Xbox’s current US cloud page is the authority for availability and plan details. The December 2025 getting-started article used “unlimited” wording, but the current subscription pages display monthly cloud-playtime allowances, so use the current plan page when the two descriptions differ.
Which Game Pass plans include cloud gaming?
For the current US plan descriptions checked in October 2026, Essential, Premium, and Ultimate include listed cloud-gaming benefits. The displayed allowances are 5, 10, and 15 cloud-play hours per month respectively. Xbox states that cloud hours from multiple eligible subscriptions do not stack.

| Option | Displayed cloud allowance | Plan-library description | What it is best for | Platforms described by Xbox |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free Microsoft account | No subscription allowance stated | Selected free-to-play cloud games, such as Fortnite | Trying an eligible free-to-play title without subscribing | Supported browser devices in supported regions |
| Game Pass Essential | 5 hours per month | 50+ games | Lowest listed subscription cloud allowance | Devices listed on the current Xbox plan page |
| Game Pass Premium | 10 hours per month | 200+ games | More listed hours and a larger plan library | Devices listed on the current Xbox plan page |
| Game Pass Ultimate | 15 hours per month | 500+ games | Highest listed allowance, plus day-one games and other listed benefits | Devices listed on the current Xbox plan page |
| PC Game Pass | No cloud benefit included | PC games for local installation | Installing games on a Windows PC rather than streaming | Windows PC |
The 50+, 200+, and 500+ figures describe each plan’s overall library, not the number of games that can be streamed. Consult the live catalog for a particular title. The US Xbox Game Pass page is at xbox.com/en-US/xbox-game-pass. The retrieved US pages did not show a usable numeric monthly dollar price, so check the live plan page and checkout for your country instead of relying on an older price.
Xbox also reported more than 1,000 eligible owned games available to stream in an April 2026 update. That is a dated publisher figure, not a promise that the live catalog will contain the same count. The same update reported more than 190 cloud games with mouse-and-keyboard support and more than 260 with touch controls.

Windows gives you two access routes: a supported browser at xbox.com/play or the Xbox PC app. The browser is usually the quickest because it does not require an app installation. The app route is useful if you already manage PC games there, but installing a PC title is different from starting a cloud session.
Browser route
- Open Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or another browser that Xbox supports on your device.
- Go to xbox.com/play and select Sign in.
- Use the Microsoft account that owns your eligible Game Pass plan or that can access the selected free-to-play title.
- Browse or search for a game marked for cloud play. Open its detail page and choose the cloud-play button.
- Connect a compatible controller before launching unless that title explicitly offers touch or mouse-and-keyboard input.
- Wait for the stream to start. Closing the browser tab ends the session; no local game installation is created.
Xbox PC app route
- Install or open the Xbox app for Windows.
- Sign in with the account that has the required entitlement.
- Open a title that shows cloud play and select the cloud option, not the button that downloads a PC version.
- If the app instead offers only installation, that title may be available for local PC play without being cloud-enabled for your plan or region.
The Xbox app’s Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 requirement applies to the app route. It does not automatically impose that requirement on every browser session. If your PC cannot run the current app, try the supported browser route first.
How do I play on a Mac?
Use the browser route; Xbox describes Mac access through the web rather than requiring a dedicated macOS Xbox app.
- Open Safari, Microsoft Edge, or Google Chrome on the Mac.
- Visit xbox.com/play and sign in.
- Select a title that is marked for cloud play under your account and region.
- Pair a compatible controller with the Mac, or use mouse and keyboard only when the game lists that input method.
- Start the stream and keep the browser window active while playing.
Xbox’s PC guidance also identifies the browser route for Mac at xbox.com/en-us/xbox-on-pc. A Mac browser can be supported while a specific game, plan, or region is not, so check the title itself rather than assuming every Xbox game will launch.

How do I play on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device?
On phones and tablets, open the cloud-gaming website in a supported browser. Xbox’s getting-started guide suggests adding the page to your Home Screen for faster access; it does not make a dedicated mobile app a prerequisite.
- Open Safari on iPhone or iPad, or a supported browser on Android.
- Navigate to xbox.com/play.
- Sign in, then select a title with cloud availability.
- For a quicker launch next time, use the browser’s Add to Home Screen command where available.
- Connect a compatible Bluetooth or wired controller for games without touch controls. If the title supports touch, its on-screen controls appear when the session starts.
- Use a stable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection that meets Xbox’s guidance, and avoid moving between networks during a session.
Xbox’s December 2025 setup guide covers this browser-first approach at news.xbox.com/en-us/2025/12/19/getting-started-with-xbox-cloud-gaming/. The same approach works on many tablets and ChromeOS devices when the browser, region, account, and game qualify.
Can I play in any web browser?
No. Xbox lists Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Safari as supported examples, but browser support is only one part of eligibility. A browser can load the site while the device, account, plan, region, input method, or connection still prevents a particular game from launching.
When a browser session fails, update the browser, sign out and back in, and try another supported browser on the same device. If the game remains unavailable, check the title’s cloud badge and your plan before assuming the browser is at fault.
How do I choose a game and start a cloud session?
The cloud button is the practical test: it confirms that Xbox currently offers that title to your account in your location. A Game Pass catalog listing alone is not enough.
- Search the live catalog: Use the cloud-gaming page while signed in, rather than relying on an old list or a screenshot.
- Open the game page: Look for the cloud-play action. If it is missing, verify plan, region, and whether the title is cloud-enabled.
- Check input labels: The page or launch screen may indicate touch or mouse-and-keyboard support. Otherwise, plan to use a controller.
- Launch: Select the cloud option and wait for the session to initialize. Streaming begins remotely; it does not consume the storage required for a local PC installation.
- Save normally: Use the game’s own save or checkpoint system. If you move between devices, sign in with the same Microsoft account so the service can associate the session with the correct profile.
Can I stream games I own that are not in Game Pass?
Yes, but only for selected digitally owned games that Xbox makes available for cloud streaming. Buying an Xbox game does not make every title streamable. The live cloud catalog, your region, and your eligible plan determine whether the cloud button appears.

Xbox’s April 2026 update described more than 1,000 eligible owned games across supported devices. Treat that as the publisher’s count at the time of the update, not as a permanent catalog total. Check the individual game’s page after signing in before assuming an owned title is eligible.
Which controllers and input methods work?
A compatible Xbox or other supported controller is the safest choice across PC, Mac, mobile, and tablet. Select games expose touch controls, and Xbox reported more than 190 cloud games with mouse-and-keyboard support in its April 2026 update; support is game-specific, not a universal service setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Existing controller: Pair it with Bluetooth, USB, or the connection method supported by your device. Check the device’s compatibility before buying anything new.
- Touch: Choose a title that advertises touch controls. The layout and number of on-screen buttons vary by game, and a touch-enabled catalog count does not mean every title supports touch.
- Mouse and keyboard: Use them only when the game lists that input. A mouse and keyboard connected to a PC do not automatically add support to a controller-only title.
- Phone mounts and mobile controllers: These are optional convenience hardware. They do not replace the requirements for an eligible account, cloud-enabled game, supported device, and adequate network.
If a controller works in the device’s menus but not in a game, confirm that the title supports that input and reconnect it before launching. For a phone, also verify that the controller is compatible with the phone’s operating system and connection mode.
What internet speed does Xbox Cloud Gaming need?
Xbox’s cloud-gaming FAQ gives 10 Mbps download as a general minimum and identifies 10 Mbps on mobile and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs, and tablets as rates for best performance. These are guidance figures, not a guarantee of perfect video or input response.
- Prefer a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network when your router and device support it.
- Use a wired Ethernet connection on a PC when practical, especially if nearby wireless traffic causes interruptions.
- Stay close to the access point on Wi-Fi and avoid switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data during play.
- Pause large downloads and high-bandwidth video streams on the same connection.
- Remember that Xbox identifies location and device conditions as additional factors; meeting a speed number does not remove regional or hardware limitations.
Xbox’s current guidance is published at xbox.com/en-US/cloud-gaming. If a stream is unstable above the stated rate, test the same account and game on a closer 5 GHz network or wired connection before changing plans or buying a new device.
What is the difference between cloud streaming and installing a PC game?
Cloud streaming starts a remote session through the browser or Xbox app, so you do not download the full game or need enough local storage for its installation. Installing a PC game downloads files to the Windows computer and runs the title locally; that route uses PC Game Pass or a purchase, not the cloud allowance.

| Decision | Cloud streaming | Local PC installation |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game files run | Streamed session accessed through a supported browser or Xbox app | Installed on the Windows PC |
| Storage needed | No full game installation required | Enough drive space for the game and updates |
| Network dependence | Continuous connection is required while playing | Internet is still used for downloads, updates, and online features, but the game runs locally |
| Plan check | Requires cloud eligibility, and subscription cloud hours apply where relevant | PC Game Pass supports local PC play but does not include cloud play by itself |
| Controls | Controller, touch, or mouse and keyboard according to the title | Controls supported by the installed PC version |
Choose streaming when you want to start quickly on a supported device or avoid a large download. Choose local installation when your connection is unreliable, you need the PC version’s full settings, or the title is not offered for cloud play.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is a game missing or unavailable?
Missing titles are usually an eligibility mismatch rather than a broken browser. Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the plan: Essential, Premium, and Ultimate have listed cloud benefits; PC Game Pass alone does not.
- Confirm the account: Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription or the digital game.
- Confirm cloud status: A game can be in a plan’s overall library while lacking cloud availability.
- Confirm region: Xbox varies cloud access by country or region, and the same title may not appear everywhere.
- Confirm time-sensitive catalog status: Games can enter or leave a service, so an older article or saved bookmark may be out of date.
- Confirm the device and browser: Try a supported browser or the Windows app when appropriate, but do not expect an app reinstall to add a title that is not eligible.
For an owned game, verify that ownership is digital and that Xbox lists that particular title for cloud streaming. Ownership alone is not a blanket pass for every Xbox release.
What should I do when controls or video fail?
Match the symptom to the requirement instead of assuming the subscription is defective.
The game launches but no controls respond
- Check whether the title expects a controller, touch, or mouse and keyboard.
- Reconnect the controller before reopening the cloud session.
- On mobile, verify the controller’s compatibility with that phone or tablet.
- On a PC, do not infer mouse-and-keyboard support from the fact that the browser is running on a computer.
The picture is blurry or the stream keeps pausing
- Compare your connection with Xbox’s 10 Mbps general minimum and 20 Mbps PC/tablet best-performance guidance.
- Move to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet where available.
- Stop competing downloads and try again closer to the router.
- Test another supported device only after checking that the title and account are eligible; changing hardware cannot fix a plan or region restriction.
The cloud button is absent
- Check the live title page while signed in.
- Verify that your plan includes cloud gaming and that you have not mistaken PC Game Pass for a cloud plan.
- Check region and catalog status. The absence of a button can be intentional for that game, account, or location.
How should I choose between the browser and Windows app?
Use the browser when you want the fewest prerequisites or are on macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Android, or ChromeOS. Use the Windows app when you prefer an installed Xbox interface and your PC meets its Windows 10/11 version 22H2 requirement.
- Browser advantages: Works across more device categories, avoids an app installation, and is the route Xbox documents for Mac and mobile.
- Windows app advantages: Keeps cloud and locally installed PC games in one Windows interface.
- Neither route overrides eligibility: Both still require a supported region, account, game, input method, and connection.
Do not buy a new computer solely for cloud play if an existing Mac, phone, tablet, Chromebook, or Windows PC can run a supported browser and meet the connection guidance.

What is the practical setup checklist?
Use this short sequence whenever you start on a new device:
- Check the current cloud page for your region and sign in.
- Confirm that your plan is Essential, Premium, or Ultimate, or select a supported free-to-play title with a free Microsoft account.
- Search for the game and verify that its page shows cloud play.
- Choose a supported browser; on Windows, optionally use the Xbox PC app.
- Connect a compatible controller unless the title advertises touch or mouse-and-keyboard support.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet when possible and meet Xbox’s speed guidance.
- Launch the cloud option, not the download button for a local PC installation.
These checks separate the five variables that are easy to confuse: subscription, catalog eligibility, device route, controls, and network quality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Xbox Cloud Gaming install anything on my phone or Mac?
No. The browser route streams the session and does not require the full game to be stored on the device. You may add the site to a phone’s Home Screen for convenience, but that shortcut is not a game installation.
Why can I see a game in Game Pass but not a cloud-play button?
The plan library and the cloud catalog are different lists. Xbox can include a title for local installation while withholding cloud access for that game, region, platform, or time period, so the signed-in title page is the deciding check.
Can I use a controller I already own instead of buying an Xbox controller?
Often, yes, provided the controller is compatible with the device and recognized by the game. Xbox also supports touch in selected titles and mouse and keyboard in games that explicitly list those controls, so new hardware is not automatically required.
Why does meeting the speed recommendation not guarantee a smooth stream?
The 10 Mbps and 20 Mbps figures are Xbox guidance rates, not a promise of identical performance. Xbox also identifies location, device, Wi-Fi conditions, and other connection factors as influences, so a 5 GHz or wired connection can help when raw bandwidth is not the only problem.
