Xbox Cloud Gaming can use several gigabytes of data every hour. Planning around a sustained stream rate gives approximately 3.6 GB per hour at 8 Mbps, 6.75 GB at 15 Mbps, 9 GB at 20 Mbps, and as much as 13.5 GB at 30 Mbps. Those are planning calculations, not a single universal Xbox allowance: the service changes quality with your connection, device, and the game scene. A historical 720p Android test averaged about 2.36 GB per hour, showing why real measurements can be lower than a bitrate ceiling. If your broadband or mobile plan has a cap, check its data counter during a one-hour session before committing to long play sessions.
How much data does Xbox Cloud Gaming use per hour?
There is no one official Xbox figure in gigabytes per hour. The most useful way to budget is to convert the stream’s sustained megabits per second (Mbps) into decimal gigabytes (GB) per hour. The following rates are calculated from bitrate values reported in a September 2026 analysis based on Microsoft streaming figures.

| Sustained stream rate | Approximate data per hour | Approximate data for two hours | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 Mbps | 3.6 GB | 7.2 GB | Lower-rate planning case; quality may be reduced or adaptive |
| 15 Mbps | 6.75 GB | 13.5 GB | Mid-range planning case for a stable stream |
| 20 Mbps | 9 GB | 18 GB | Matches Xbox’s recommended speed for consoles, PCs and tablets |
| 30 Mbps | 13.5 GB | 27 GB | High-rate ceiling; actual use can fall below it |
The figures use decimal gigabytes, where 1 GB equals 1,000 megabytes. They assume the listed rate is sustained for the entire session. Menus, scene changes, adaptive quality, protocol overhead and interruptions can move the actual meter up or down.
How are the GB-per-hour estimates calculated?
Mbps means megabits, while the data allowance on your plan is usually expressed in gigabytes. Convert by multiplying the rate by 3,600 seconds, dividing by eight to change bits into bytes, and dividing by 1,000 to express the result in decimal gigabytes:

Mbps × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 = GB per hour
For example, 20 Mbps × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 equals 9 GB per hour. This is a capacity estimate, not a promise that Xbox will transmit exactly 20 Mbps every second. A stream that spends part of a session below its ceiling will consume less; one that includes overhead or other traffic on the same connection will show more on the account meter.
What internet speed does Xbox Cloud Gaming require?
Xbox’s official cloud-gaming guidance lists 10 Mbps on mobile devices and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs and tablets. Xbox Wire separately recommends at least 20 Mbps for stable cloud gaming. These are connection-speed recommendations for delivering the stream, not direct conversions into a guaranteed data allowance.
Mobile devices
Xbox lists 10 Mbps as the best-performance rate for mobile devices and allows a 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection. A cellular link can meet the speed target while still being unsuitable for long sessions if the plan has a small cap, expensive overage, or deprioritization after a threshold.
Consoles, PCs and tablets
For consoles, PCs and tablets, the listed best-performance rate is 20 Mbps. Xbox Wire recommends wired Ethernet where possible; 5 GHz Wi-Fi is the practical wireless alternative. A faster link improves headroom and may prevent quality drops, but it does not automatically lower data use. The selected stream rate and the service’s adaptive behavior determine consumption.
Controller and network hardware
A compatible Bluetooth or USB controller is required on supported devices. Keep the controller paired or connected before launching a session, and use Ethernet or a strong 5 GHz signal when available. Latency, packet loss and interference can cause pauses or quality changes even when a speed test reports a high download rate.

Why can two people use different amounts of data?
Cloud gaming is a video stream whose rate changes with conditions rather than a fixed download. Xbox can adjust quality when bandwidth falls, when wireless interference appears, or when the service detects that the device cannot sustain the selected output. Game scenes also differ: rapid camera movement, dense effects and fine detail are harder to compress than a static menu.

- Adaptive streaming: the service may lower the rate to keep play responsive, reducing data while potentially reducing image detail.
- Connection quality: retransmissions, congestion and packet loss can alter the amount recorded by your router or carrier.
- Device and mode: a historical Android test at 720p will not represent every current device, resolution or service version.
- Other traffic: updates, cloud backups, video calls and other users share the same account meter and can make a gaming session appear to use more.
- Session behavior: leaving a game running, sitting in menus or repeatedly reconnecting changes the time and traffic pattern compared with uninterrupted play.
What did a measured 720p test actually use?
Windows Central reported an Android xCloud test that transferred 590 MB in 15 minutes. Multiplying that four times gives approximately 2.36 GB per hour. That result describes one device, a 720p test, a particular service version and a particular network; it is a historical observation from 2020, not a current universal Xbox rate.
Use that number as evidence that real consumption can be below a bitrate-based ceiling, not as a promise for a present-day session. If your device reports a different resolution or the service changes its encoding, your meter can differ substantially.
Will Xbox Cloud Gaming use up a mobile-data allowance?
It can. A two-hour session planned around the 15–30 Mbps range works out to roughly 13.5–27 GB before counting unrelated traffic. That can consume a large share of a phone hotspot or fixed-wireless allowance, and an overage policy may charge more or reduce speeds after the cap.
Check the allowance before playing
- Find the plan’s monthly or daily high-speed allowance and the point at which throttling or overage begins.
- Check whether hotspot data has a separate limit from on-device data.
- Look for a carrier billing-cycle reset date; a short remaining cycle makes a long session riskier.
- Budget using the higher plausible rate in the table when the cost of an overage is significant.
Measure your own setup
- Reset the phone, router or operating-system data counter at the start of a test.
- Play for exactly one hour using the device, quality mode and network you normally use.
- Record the total before and after, then multiply by the number of hours you expect to play each month.
- Repeat once at a different time of day if the connection is congested; keep the larger result for a conservative budget.
Your own counter includes the actual adaptive behavior of your device and connection, which is more useful for a capped plan than a generic average.

How can you prevent background traffic from consuming a capped PC connection?
On Windows, mark the network as metered to limit unrelated activity while you play. Open Settings > Network & internet, select Wi-Fi or Ethernet, choose the connected network, and turn on Metered connection. Windows can then restrict or delay some background updates, Microsoft Store downloads and synchronization.
Metered mode does not reduce the cloud stream’s own traffic and does not guarantee that every application will stop transferring data. Pause large downloads, close backup or synchronization tools, and check the Task Manager network column before starting a long session. On a shared router, other users’ streaming and downloads still count against the same broadband cap.
Which connection setup gives the most stable cloud-gaming session?
Choose the setup that keeps latency and packet loss low while leaving enough bandwidth for the stream. Use this order when it is practical:
- Wired Ethernet: connect the console or PC directly to the router, preferably with a sound Ethernet cable, to avoid wireless interference.
- 5 GHz Wi-Fi: use the 5 GHz network near the router; distance, walls and crowded channels can still reduce stability.
- Capable 5G or mobile data: confirm that reception remains strong where you play and that the plan’s hotspot rules permit cloud gaming.
- Pause competing traffic: stop downloads and high-bitrate video on the same connection during the session.
Run a speed test at the location and time you normally play, but do not treat the headline download result as a data-consumption forecast. A stable 20 Mbps connection may deliver a smoother stream than an inconsistent 100 Mbps link, while both can use similar data if they sustain the same bitrate.

What should you do if usage is higher than expected?
The counter rises much faster than the table
First check whether the counter includes every device on the connection, not just Xbox Cloud Gaming. Pause operating-system updates, game downloads, cloud backup and video streaming, then repeat a one-hour test with only the game running. If the total is still high, compare the router’s per-device meter with the console, PC or phone counter to identify whether another device is responsible.
The image quality changes or the session stutters
Move closer to the router, switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and stop competing traffic. Confirm that the connection remains above the relevant Xbox guidance during play rather than only during an idle speed test. A quality reduction may lower data use, but it signals that stability—not merely the subscription speed—needs attention.
The mobile session triggers throttling
Stop using the hotspot until you know the carrier’s reset or add-on options. Recalculate a monthly budget from your measured one-hour result, and reserve cellular play for shorter sessions if the allowance cannot absorb the expected total. Wi-Fi connected to an uncapped or more generous broadband plan avoids counting the session against mobile data.
Is Xbox Cloud Gaming practical on a capped plan?
It is practical when you reserve enough allowance and monitor the real rate. A plan that can absorb roughly 7–14 GB for a two-hour session gives a conservative target for mid-range 15–30 Mbps planning, but the table’s higher two-hour figure can reach 27 GB at 30 Mbps. Measure first, account for other household traffic, and leave headroom for overage or throttling rules.
For an uncapped connection, data volume is usually less important than latency, packet loss and Wi-Fi stability. For a capped mobile or broadband plan, data budgeting is a core setup step alongside choosing the controller and network connection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Xbox Cloud Gaming use more data than downloading a game?
A cloud session continuously receives compressed video and sends control input, so a long session can consume many gigabytes without installing the game. A one-time game download may be larger or smaller depending on the title, but it does not continue using data while you play offline.
Can lowering my screen resolution guarantee lower data use?
No. The service controls the stream’s bitrate adaptively, and the available quality modes depend on the device and service. Lowering a display setting may change rendering or scaling without forcing a proportional reduction in the network stream.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchDoes cloud gaming count upload data as well as download data?
The video stream is primarily download traffic, while controller input and session communication create upload traffic. Upload is usually much smaller, but a carrier’s total-data meter can count both directions.
How often should I check my data counter?
Check after the first one-hour test and again after a few typical sessions, especially when changing devices, networks or quality settings. Recheck after a billing-cycle reset or service update if your allowance is tight.
