To redeem a promotional PC game, sign in to the correct Microsoft account, open the Xbox app on Windows, choose your gamerpic, then Settings > Redeem a code. Enter the 25-character code and confirm. After redemption, install the title from My Library > Games I Own in the Xbox app or from Microsoft Store Library.
The same redemption box also accepts Game Pass membership codes and gift cards, but those add subscription time or account credit rather than ownership of a named game. A mobile Xbox app cannot redeem codes; use xbox.com/redeem or redeem.microsoft.com in your phone’s browser instead.

What do I need before redeeming a promotional PC game?
Have the complete 25-character Microsoft code, an internet connection, and access to the Microsoft account that should own the game. Microsoft codes usually appear as five groups of five characters separated by hyphens. Check the account name shown in the Xbox app before selecting Redeem: Xbox says a redeemed code cannot be transferred to another account.
- Windows: Windows 10 or Windows 11 with the Xbox app and Microsoft Store available.
- Code source: A Microsoft Store/Xbox code or a publisher promotional code, not a key intended for another launcher.
- Account: The account that will play the game. If the code is intended for a child, sign in as that child before redeeming.
- Region: Some retail codes are country-specific, so the code’s region must match the account or console location.
If the Xbox app is not installed, search for Xbox from Start and install the official app through Microsoft Store, or use Microsoft’s Xbox PC page. Do not use an unofficial installer.

Also check that the PC has enough free storage for the title and that Windows is not waiting for a restart after an update. Redemption itself is a licence transaction, but installation depends on the Store, Gaming Services, the app’s system requirements, and the device authorization attached to your account.
How do I redeem a code in the Xbox app on Windows?
This is the direct PC procedure documented by Xbox. The labels or the position of the profile image can change slightly between app builds, but the redemption command remains under Settings.
- Press the Start button and type Xbox.
- Open the Xbox app from the search results.
- Select your gamerpic in the top-left corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Under Redeem a code, select Redeem.
- Enter or paste all 25 characters. Remove any leading or trailing spaces copied from an email or message. Hyphens are accepted, and Microsoft’s 25-character codes can generally be entered without them.
- Select Next, review the account and product shown, then confirm the redemption.
Once confirmed, the entitlement is permanently attached to that Microsoft account. Xbox’s guidance is explicit: “Just make sure you’re signed in to the correct Microsoft account before you redeem your code because you won’t be able to transfer it.”
Do not close the confirmation screen simply because the title is not immediately visible. The account update can be completed before the library refreshes. Open My Library and Microsoft Store Library after a short refresh, rather than submitting the same code repeatedly; a second attempt can report that an already successful code is used.
Which redemption route should I choose?
Every official route applies the result to the same Microsoft account. Choose based on the device you have and how the code was delivered.

The practical default is to redeem in a browser when the code is text, because the account name is visible before confirmation. If the code is for the Windows PC in front of you, the Xbox app is the shortest path.
Can I redeem the same code somewhere else?
Yes. All of the official routes apply the result to the same Microsoft account, so you can redeem in a browser or Microsoft Store and then install through Xbox.
Browser: best when the code arrived as text
- Open xbox.com/en-US/redeem or redeem.microsoft.com. microsoft.com/redeem is another Microsoft entry point.
- Sign in and verify the account name.
- Paste the 25-character code, select Next, and confirm.
A browser is useful when a code is in an email, Slack message, or publisher portal because you can paste it without retyping and see the signed-in account before committing. On a phone, use the browser pages rather than the Xbox mobile app: Xbox’s current guidance says the mobile app cannot redeem codes.

Microsoft Store on Windows
- Open Start > Microsoft Store.
- Select the account icon in the top-right corner.
- Choose Redeem code or gift cards.
- Enter the code, select Next, and follow the prompts.
After ownership is added, open Microsoft Store Library, clear Show installed products only if necessary, and select the cloud download icon.
Publisher promotional link
Some Partner Center promotions arrive as a Microsoft go.microsoft.com link containing a token rather than as visible text. Opening that link takes you to Microsoft’s authenticated redemption page at account.microsoft.com/billing/redeem, displays the product, and then hands off to Microsoft Store on Windows 10 or 11. If Microsoft Store is unavailable, the web listing can still attach the licence to your account for a later installation. Never forward or publish an unused token; anyone who redeems it first claims the entitlement.

Xbox console
If you also use an Xbox console, the console path is Xbox button > Store > View button > Redeem. Enter the code and select Next. A PC entitlement remains on the same Microsoft account, although only titles marked Xbox Play Anywhere install on both PC and console.
What does a 25-character code give me?
The Xbox app accepts several code types. The box looks identical, but the resulting entitlement is different.

Microsoft Support says gift cards, Xbox download codes, and tokens work the same way once redeemed to the account; what changes is the balance or licence they add. Office keys belong at Office.com/setup, and Windows activation keys belong in Settings > Activation > Change product key, not in Xbox.
A gift-card redemption will not make a named promotional game appear in Games I Own; it leaves money in the account until you spend it. A Game Pass code likewise grants access according to the membership terms and catalogue, not a permanent licence to every installed title. Check the wording on the message or receipt before assuming that every 25-character string is a game key.

Redeeming proves ownership; it does not automatically download the game. Install it on the Windows PC that will run it.
- Open the Xbox app.
- Select My Library in the side panel.
- Scroll to All games.
- Apply the GAMES I OWN filter. This shows purchased and redeemed titles. Remove that filter when you want to browse the Game Pass catalogue as well.
- Select the redeemed game and click Install.
- Choose an installation drive or folder if prompted.
- Monitor the download under Queue at the bottom of the side panel.
If the title is not visible, sign out and back into both Xbox and Microsoft Store with the account that redeemed it, then refresh the library. A redeemed entitlement can be present in Store Library even while the Xbox list is still loading. The GAMES I OWN filter is important: leaving it off mixes owned products with the Game Pass catalogue and can make the list look different from your purchase history.

The Microsoft Store alternative is Library: sort or filter, untick Show installed products only, then select the cloud icon beside the game. On the Xbox website, a title’s Install to PC command hands the installation request to the Xbox app.
Installing owned add-ons
For downloadable content, open My Library > Owned > the game > Add-ons for this game > Show All, select the owned add-on, and choose Install. Download progress appears under Downloading at the lower left. An add-on code does not necessarily install the base game; confirm that the base title is owned or included with an active membership.
Moving or removing an installation
In Xbox My Library, right-click the game and select Manage > Uninstall. Windows also exposes the app under Apps & features, where a supported installation can be moved to another drive. Uninstalling removes local files, not the account entitlement, so an owned game can be downloaded again on an authorized device.
Why does the Store show Buy instead of Install?
A Buy button does not always mean the promotion failed. Microsoft Learn documents cases in which a promotional code redeemed successfully but the product page still displays Buy. Selecting Buy should complete a free installation; it should not charge the account for the already-redeemed entitlement. Confirm the price shown at the final step before accepting.
For a Partner Center promotion, the product must have completed publishing. Customers receive an error when a publisher distributes a code before the app or game is published, even if the listing is configured as undiscoverable. The publisher should wait for publishing to finish before distributing additional codes.
Do promotional PC game codes expire?
Expiry depends on the code’s origin, so do not apply one rule to every 25-character string.

- Partner Center game promotional codes: Microsoft Learn says game promotions never expire and allows up to 5,000 promotional codes per game (Microsoft Learn policy updated in 2026, with policy text dated 2024).
- Other Partner Center apps or add-ons: Redemptions are limited to 1,600 in a rolling six-month period; single-use codes or a multi-use code can be capped at that total. Non-game codes have a six-month default lifetime unless an earlier expiry is set.
- Retail marketing promotions: A printed or emailed expiry date can apply. Follow the terms supplied by the retailer or publisher.
Therefore, a publisher’s permanent game promotion and a retailer’s time-limited campaign are not interchangeable, even though both use the same redemption screen. Keep the original message or receipt so you can check whether the code was a Partner Center grant, a retail campaign, a membership token, or stored-value credit.
Why is my Xbox app redeem code not working?
Work through these checks in order. A key that appears “broken” is often for a different platform, account, or region.

- Verify the platform. A key for another PC launcher cannot be redeemed in Xbox. Steam, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net, GOG, and Rockstar keys must be activated in their own clients. Check the offer or order for the Microsoft Store/Xbox designation.
- Verify the Microsoft account. Sign out and back in if necessary, then check Xbox app My Library and Microsoft Store Library before trying again. A successful redemption may otherwise look like a failure when a second attempt reports that the code is already used.
- Check every character. Paste the code again without spaces. Re-read similar-looking characters and remove a trailing space copied from an email. Hyphens do not have to be entered for ordinary Microsoft 25-character codes.
- Check the region. Country-specific codes can return an “Incorrect region” error. On a console, the location path is Profile & system > Settings > System > Language and location. If a retailer sold a foreign-region code, contact that retailer; changing settings may not make an improperly sold code valid.
- Try a browser. Use xbox.com/redeem or redeem.microsoft.com if the in-app form fails.
- Refresh Microsoft Store. Press Windows+R, run
wsreset.exe, then reopen Store and Xbox. - Update Store components. In Microsoft Store, open Library > Get updates, including Gaming Services. Restart Windows after a pending operating-system update.
- Check device authorization. Microsoft Store apps and content can be downloaded to up to 10 devices per account. Remove unused devices at accounts.microsoft.com/devices.
- Check availability and safety settings. Family Safety can hide age-inappropriate apps. A title may also be unavailable in your country, removed from the Store, or incompatible with the PC.
- Check account enforcement. An Xbox network suspension can block redemption until the suspension ends.
- Check publication status. A Partner Center code can fail while its game is still unpublished. The publisher must complete the Store publishing process.
- Handle damaged physical codes through the seller. Keep the receipt and contact the retailer if the printed code is unreadable.
Microsoft’s redeem support page also links to Xbox error and status-code search tools when these steps do not identify the problem. Avoid entering a code on unofficial “activation” sites or giving it to a repair service; a valid unused code is effectively the licence itself.

Open account.microsoft.com/billing/orders and review the order history for the account used during redemption. Microsoft may show a product key or installation link there. The title should also appear in Xbox app My Library under GAMES I OWN and in Microsoft Store Library. For a gift card, check the account balance rather than looking for a game tile; for Game Pass, check the subscription section and its expiry date.

The licence belongs to the Microsoft account, not to the Windows installation on which you entered the code. You can sign into another authorized Windows PC with that account and install the title if the game’s device and region requirements allow it. Microsoft Store apps and content can be downloaded to up to 10 devices associated with an account; remove old hardware from the device-management page when that limit blocks a new installation.
A console can use the same entitlement only when the title supports Xbox Play Anywhere; an ordinary PC Store game remains a PC entitlement. Look for the Play Anywhere designation on the individual Store listing rather than assuming that a promotional PC code includes a console copy.
Store credit and subscriptions are pooled across Windows and Xbox under the same account. That does not convert every promotional PC game into a console copy, so check the individual Store listing for the Play Anywhere badge and the supported platform icons.
How we picked the safest redemption route
The Xbox app is the shortest path when you are already on the PC that will run the game. Browser redemption is preferable when the code is copied from a message or when you need the clearest account confirmation. Microsoft Store is a practical fallback when Xbox is unavailable. In every case, the deciding checks are the signed-in account, the code’s platform and region, and whether the result is game ownership, subscription time, or store credit.

Can I redeem a promotional game for someone else?
No. The code is claimed by whichever Microsoft account is signed in at confirmation, and Xbox does not provide a transfer process afterward. Give the unredeemed code to the intended player and have that person sign in before submitting it.
How can I tell whether a PC title also includes an Xbox version?
Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere designation on the individual Microsoft Store listing. Only titles carrying that designation are documented as installing on both Windows and Xbox from one purchase or redemption.

Why is a redeemed game missing from My Library?
Check that the Xbox app and Microsoft Store use the same Microsoft account, refresh both libraries, and confirm that GAMES I OWN is being used for purchased or redeemed titles. Family Safety, country availability, device compatibility, publication status, or the 10-device authorization limit can also hide an otherwise valid entitlement.
Can I redeem a code in the Xbox mobile app?
Xbox’s current redeem guidance says the mobile app cannot redeem codes. Open the redemption page in your phone’s browser instead, then install the game later from the Xbox app on Windows.

What should I do if Buy appears instead of Install?
If the promotional code was accepted, Microsoft documents that Buy can still appear. Select it and verify that the checkout total is zero; it should complete the free installation. If the code itself failed, confirm the product has finished publishing and try the browser redemption page.
Is a Game Pass code the same as a game code?
No. Both use the 25-character redemption box, but a Game Pass code adds membership time and catalogue access. It does not permanently add one named game to Games I Own.
Can I use a Microsoft Store code on Steam?
No. A Microsoft Store/Xbox entitlement is installed through Xbox or Microsoft Store. Steam, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net, GOG, and Rockstar keys must be redeemed in their respective launchers.
What if my code says Incorrect region?
