For most buyers, the standard ROG XBOX Ally is the value choice, while the ROG XBOX Ally X is the better pick for demanding games, heavier multitasking, and longer sessions. The standard model has 16GB of memory, a 512GB SSD, and a 60Wh battery; the Ally X increases those to 24GB, 1TB, and 80Wh, adds USB4, and uses a faster Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. The official Xbox comparison page also lists an ROG XBOX Ally X20 with a 7.4-inch OLED display, but its current US price and availability need separate verification.
Choose the model first, then decide whether the included internal storage is enough. A protective case and additional storage are the most broadly useful accessories. A dock, power bank, wireless audio, keyboard, or internal SSD upgrade only makes sense for a particular travel or desk setup.

Which Xbox Ally should you buy?
The regular ROG XBOX Ally is the sensible starting point when price matters and you mainly play indie, older, 2D, or well-optimized PC games. Choose the ROG XBOX Ally X when you want more performance headroom, 24GB of memory, a larger battery, 1TB of internal storage, and USB4. Neither is a traditional closed Xbox console: both run Windows 11 Home and can use PC game launchers and services.

What makes the regular ROG XBOX Ally the value model?
The standard Ally gives you the core Windows handheld experience at a substantially lower starting price. Its Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16GB of LPDDR5-6400 memory, 512GB SSD, 7-inch 120Hz display, Wi-Fi 6E, and 60Wh battery cover the needs of many players who do not keep a large collection installed at once.
The 512GB SSD is the main compromise. Windows, launchers, updates, and recovery space reduce the usable capacity, and a single modern game can occupy a large portion of it. That does not make the standard model unsuitable; it means you should plan on a microSD card, regular uninstalling, or a later SSD replacement if your library is large.

Two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports make the regular model flexible for charging and peripherals. It also has a UHS-II microSD reader, Bluetooth 5.4, and a 3.5mm combo audio jack. The lower 670g weight may matter if you hold the device for long periods.
Is the ROG XBOX Ally X worth paying more for?
The Ally X costs $400 more at the listed starting prices. That premium buys more than a larger SSD: it includes a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of faster LPDDR5X-8000 memory, an 80Wh battery, USB4, impulse triggers, and a 715g chassis.
It is the stronger choice for demanding games, users who keep several launchers and applications open, and anyone who would otherwise purchase a 1TB SSD soon after buying the standard model. The extra memory also gives the system more headroom for games that share resources with Windows background processes. The larger battery increases capacity, but actual runtime still depends on game, brightness, frame-rate settings, power mode, and network conditions; no universal runtime should be assumed.
The X is not automatically the best value. If you mostly play lighter games, stream from another system, or are comfortable managing a 512GB library with removable storage, the regular Ally leaves more money for a case, card, dock, or other accessories. The X is a performance-and-endurance purchase, not a requirement for using Xbox services.

What is the ROG XBOX Ally X20, and should you wait for it?
The official Xbox comparison page now lists a third family member, the ROG XBOX Ally X20. Its listed hardware includes a 7.4-inch OLED display, 1TB M.2 2280 storage, MicroSD Express, 24GB of onboard memory, TMR joysticks, a transforming D-pad, impulse triggers, and rubberized grips.
The supplied product information does not establish a current US retail price, stock status, or a complete list of accessories that fit the X20. For that reason, do not treat it as a confirmed value winner or assume that cases, screen protectors, docks, or cards made for the other Ally models fit. Verify the exact model name, dimensions, connector layout, price, and retailer availability before ordering.
How much storage do you need for Xbox Ally?
Storage needs depend more on how many large games you keep installed than on the number of launchers you use. The standard Ally starts at 512GB; the Ally X starts at 1TB. Both use an upgradeable M.2 2280 SSD and include a UHS-II microSD reader.
- Choose 1TB internal storage: Prefer the Ally X if you expect a sizable AAA library and want less day-to-day storage management.
- Choose 512GB internal storage: The regular Ally is appropriate if the lower purchase price matters and you are willing to uninstall finished games or add removable storage.
- Add a 512GB microSD card: This is the clearest starting capacity for the standard model and remains useful on the Ally X when its 1TB fills.
- Consider 1TB or 2TB removable storage: Xbox lists SanDisk cards for the Ally family in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities. Check the exact card format and current compatibility before purchase.
Removable storage is convenient for a game library, but do not assume that every game, launcher, update process, or workload behaves identically from a card. Check the requirements of the specific title and launcher, and keep frequently played or unusually demanding software on the internal SSD when appropriate.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can you upgrade the Xbox Ally internal SSD?
Yes. The standard Ally and Ally X use an M.2 2280 SSD, so the internal drive is replaceable rather than permanently fixed at its factory capacity. A replacement is an advanced maintenance task, not an essential first purchase.
- Back up your data and recovery information. Copy saves, documents, and any files you cannot replace. Confirm that your game saves are synchronized or otherwise backed up.
- Choose a compatible M.2 2280 NVMe drive. Match the physical 2280 format and verify compatibility with the exact Ally model. A vendor datasheet for the WD_BLACK SN7100X specifically describes it as built for PC and ROG XBOX Ally [X] gaming, but you should still confirm the current model and installation requirements.
- Shut down completely and disconnect power. Do not work on a sleeping handheld. Follow the current service instructions for your model and keep track of every screw and connector.
- Replace the drive carefully. Opening the chassis can risk damage, and service terms can vary by region. If you are not comfortable with small electronics, use qualified service instead of forcing the back cover or connector.
- Reinstall or restore Windows. A blank SSD needs an operating-system recovery or installation process, followed by Windows updates, ASUS device software, Xbox components, launchers, and your games.
- Test the new capacity before deleting the old backup. Confirm that Windows reports the expected drive size and that your essential files and game saves are available.
An SSD upgrade can provide more responsive local storage management, but it does not turn the regular Ally into an Ally X. Processor, memory, battery, ports, controls, and weight remain determined by the original model.

Which accessories are essential for Xbox Ally?
1. A protective case
A case is the most universally useful accessory for a portable PC. Xbox lists the ROG XBOX Ally 2-in-1 Premium Case, and a Tomtoc carrying case is identified by Windows Central as a broadly useful handheld option. Check the exact cutouts, grip shape, charger compartment, and model compatibility; an X20 may require a different fit.
2. Additional storage
A 512GB or larger microSD card is the strongest add-on for the standard Ally and remains practical for the Ally X. Xbox’s official accessory listings identify SanDisk cards for the Ally family, including 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB options. Buy for the exact reader and model rather than relying on a generic “gaming” label.
3. A dock or high-output charger
The ROG 100W Gaming Charger Dock is useful when the handheld becomes a desk or living-room PC. A dock can connect a monitor or TV, keyboard, mouse, wired network, and other USB devices while charging. It is not required for handheld play, and a dock should be selected for its ports and power capability, not simply its wattage printed on the box.
4. A power bank for travel
A power bank makes sense when you regularly play away from outlets. Windows Central lists an Anker 20,000mAh power bank among handheld accessories. Verify the exact unit’s USB-C Power Delivery output and cable requirements before assuming it can charge the Ally at a particular rate or while you play.
5. Headphones or earbuds
Xbox lists SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds for Xbox. Wireless audio is useful in shared rooms and during travel, but it ranks below a case and storage because both Ally models include Bluetooth and a 3.5mm combo audio jack. Wired headphones also avoid pairing and battery-management issues.
6. Keyboard, mouse, and adapters for a desk setup
A foldable Bluetooth keyboard, mouse, and USB-C adapters are optional quality-of-life upgrades when you use Windows, troubleshoot launchers, or connect the Ally to a monitor. Put these in a desk-setup budget rather than treating them as essential gaming accessories.

What should you buy first if your budget is limited?
Start with the regular Ally, a correctly fitted case, and a 512GB microSD card if the Ally X’s price is outside your budget. This combination protects the device and addresses the standard model’s main limitation without committing to an internal repair.
If you can spend more and expect demanding games, choose the Ally X before buying a large accessory bundle. Its 1TB SSD, 24GB memory, 80Wh battery, and faster processor are permanent hardware advantages; a dock or premium earbuds can be added later.
If your priority is a monitor-and-peripherals setup, reserve money for a dock and the required cables. If your priority is travel, prioritize the case and power bank. Accessories should follow the way you use the handheld, not a generic checklist.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do Xbox services and PC games work on the Ally?
The Ally runs Windows 11 Home, so it is a Windows PC handheld with an Xbox-focused interface rather than a conventional Xbox console. You can use PC storefronts and launchers supported by Windows, as well as Xbox services such as Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming where your account, subscription, region, and network meet the service requirements.

Do not assume that buying a game on an Xbox console automatically grants a PC copy. Licensing can depend on the title and the publisher’s current policy; check the game’s store listing for PC entitlement before buying hardware or a second copy.
What should you check before ordering?
- Confirm whether the listing is for ROG XBOX Ally, Ally X, or X20; similar names do not guarantee identical dimensions or ports.
- Recheck Microsoft Store and retailer pricing and stock immediately before payment. The supplied Store pages showed both the regular Ally and Ally X as out of stock when checked.
- For a case, screen protector, dock, or charging accessory, verify exact model fit and connector placement.
- For a microSD card, confirm capacity, format, and reader compatibility; Xbox lists SanDisk cards in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities for the family.
- For an SSD replacement, verify M.2 2280 compatibility and prepare a Windows recovery plan before opening the device.
- Budget for storage management. A larger card does not guarantee identical performance for every game or launcher.
- Do not buy on promised frame rates or battery hours unless a source provides figures for the specific game and settings.
Bottom line: Buy the regular ROG XBOX Ally for value, the Ally X for sustained performance and endurance, and consider the X20 only after confirming its current US price, stock, and accessory compatibility. For either established model, a protective case and appropriately sized storage are the most defensible first accessories.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Xbox Ally require a Game Pass subscription?
No. The handheld runs Windows 11 and can play compatible PC games from Windows storefronts without a Game Pass subscription. Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming are optional services with their own account, plan, region, and network requirements.
Will Xbox console purchases automatically give me the PC version on Ally?
Not always. PC entitlement depends on the individual game’s licensing and store policy, so check the current listing for Xbox Play Anywhere or another explicit PC entitlement before assuming a purchase carries over.
Can I use a 2TB microSD card in an Xbox Ally?
Xbox lists SanDisk cards for the Ally family in capacities up to 2TB. Confirm that the card’s format and interface match your exact Ally model, and remember that game and launcher behavior can differ when installed on removable storage.
Is the Ally X20 available in the United States?
The official Xbox comparison page lists the X20, but the supplied information does not establish a current US price or stock position. Check Microsoft’s current product listing and an authorized retailer before treating it as available or comparing its value with the other models.
Can an Ally dock replace a desktop PC?
A dock can connect the handheld to a monitor, keyboard, mouse, storage, and network accessories, making it useful as a compact Windows setup. Its suitability depends on the applications and games you run; a dock does not add processor or memory capacity.
