To stop or reduce achievement pop-ups on an Xbox console, press the Xbox button, open Settings > Preferences > Notifications, and adjust the notification choices your console actually displays. To control who can see achievements, game statistics, presence, or related activity, use the separate path Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize, or sign in to Xbox’s online privacy settings and select Submit after making changes.
These controls do different jobs. Muting a pop-up does not erase an achievement or stop Xbox from reporting activity, while privacy settings do not necessarily remove a notification from your own screen. A 2026 Insider preview also introduced hiding games from an achievement-history view, but that option is not the same as deleting Gamerscore or making activity invisible.

What is the difference between Xbox notification settings and privacy settings?
Notification settings control what appears to you and where it appears. Privacy settings control how selected Xbox information can be shared with other players and linked services. Treat them as two separate jobs rather than two ways of changing the same switch.
| Goal | Where to change it | What it affects | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quiet achievement or other console pop-ups | Xbox console: Settings > Preferences > Notifications | Notification behavior shown on your console, based on the choices currently displayed there | It does not delete achievements, change Gamerscore, or by itself change what other people can see |
| Limit sharing of achievements and gaming activity | Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize, or the signed-in online privacy page | Privacy choices for achievements, game statistics, presence, and related sharing | It cannot hide a public gamertag or leaderboard scores |
| Clean up a game list on a profile | Hide-game feature announced for selected Xbox Insiders | Profile presentation where the preview is available | It does not remove earned Gamerscore or stop activity being reported across Xbox |
| Move notifications on Windows | Xbox Game Bar: Settings widget > More settings > General | Where Xbox notifications appear on-screen | The documented PC option does not claim to disable achievement alerts or alter account privacy |
Menu labels can vary by device, software version, account type, and whether a feature is in preview. Use the documented entry point, then read the options on your own screen instead of assuming that a setting seen in a screenshot or video exists on every account.

How do I stop Xbox achievement pop-ups on a console?
Start with the console’s notification preferences. Xbox’s official guidance places notification controls at Settings > Preferences > Notifications; the exact achievement-related label currently shown inside that area is not established consistently enough to name a deeper path.
Console steps
- Press the Xbox button on the controller to open the guide.
- Choose Profile & system, then open Settings.
- Open Preferences, followed by Notifications.
- Review every notification category and option presented on your console. Look for the achievement-related choice if one is listed, and set it according to whether you want alerts disabled, reduced, or left on.
- Return to the game and unlock an achievement later to confirm that the visible behavior matches your preference. If the alert still appears, revisit the same page; do not assume a different menu path from another Xbox generation or preview build.
Xbox’s 2024 settings guidance specifically says that notification preferences can be updated on Xbox consoles from Settings > Preferences > Notifications. A 2021 Xbox Insider notice also documented an Xbox Notifications category for a different notification type, but that notice does not prove that today’s achievement control uses the same nested label.
What turning off a pop-up does not do
- The achievement remains earned in your account.
- Your Gamerscore does not decrease because an alert was suppressed.
- Changing a local notification preference does not, by itself, change the audience for your achievements or game activity.
If you cannot navigate the console because the controller is not working, a compatible replacement Xbox Wireless Controller may restore access to the Xbox-button instructions. A controller is only a navigation aid; buying one does not improve privacy and is unnecessary when your current controller works.
Who can see my Xbox achievements and gaming activity?
Use Xbox privacy controls, not the notification page, when your concern is what other people or linked services can view. Microsoft says achievements, game statistics, and presence may be visible through Xbox and connected services, subject to the privacy choices on your account.
Change privacy on the console
- Press the Xbox button and open the guide.
- Go to Profile & system > Settings.
- Open Account, then Privacy & online safety.
- Choose Xbox privacy, then View details & customize.
- Review the sharing controls presented for achievements, game statistics, presence, and related activity. Choose the least-visible setting that still works for how you use Xbox, then leave the page only after the change is saved.
Xbox also directs players to sign in to its online privacy and safety settings, make the required changes, and select Submit. The web interface may require JavaScript and an active sign-in, so a blank or incomplete page is not proof that the controls are missing. If the page does not load, sign in again, enable JavaScript in the browser, and retry from the official Xbox privacy entry point.

What privacy settings cannot hide
Microsoft’s privacy statement, last updated in September 2026, says: “Your gamertag and scores that show on game leaderboards are considered public and cannot be hidden.” That exception matters even after you restrict other activity. A privacy change can limit sharing of eligible data, but it is not a guarantee that every public-facing identifier or leaderboard result disappears.

Can I hide a game from my Xbox achievement history?
Only some Xbox Insiders were offered the hide-game feature announced in April 2026. Where available, it changes how a game is presented in an achievement-history or profile list; it is not an achievement deletion tool and not a complete activity-privacy control.
What the Insider feature changes
The April 8, 2026 Xbox Wire announcement described a forthcoming hide-game option alongside refreshed achievement-notification visuals for selected Xbox Insiders. The feature can help clean up a profile view when you do not want a particular game listed there, but the announcement did not establish a universal-release date or availability for every account.
What remains after a game is hidden
- The game’s earned Gamerscore still contributes to your total.
- Xbox activity for the game remains reported across Xbox.
- Hiding a game does not replace the account-wide privacy controls described above.
- A profile presentation change should not be treated as proof that friends, services, or other players can no longer receive related activity.
Availability is especially important here: an Xbox Insider preview can appear on one account and not another, and preview menus can change before any broad release. If you do not see the option, do not infer that you have missed a step or that your achievements are damaged.
What changed in Xbox achievement features during 2026?
Two 2026 announcements are relevant, but neither should be read as a universal replacement for the ordinary notification and privacy menus.

April 8, 2026: refreshed notifications and hide-game preview
Xbox Wire said selected Xbox Insiders could test refreshed achievement-notification visuals and a forthcoming way to hide games from an achievement-history view. The announcement did not provide a confirmed date for general availability. It also made clear that hidden games continue to count toward total Gamerscore and that activity remains reported across Xbox.
September 29, 2026: Gaming profile tab and Mythic Achievements
Xbox described a Gaming profile tab and Mythic Achievements as an Insider early look. The Gaming tab was presented as a place where friends can view achievements, but the announcement does not establish that every account has it. Do not promise either feature to someone using a standard, non-Insider account.
How do Xbox achievement notifications work on Windows PC?
On Windows, the documented Xbox Game Bar control changes notification placement rather than account privacy or achievement-alert permission. Use it when the problem is where a notification appears on screen, not when the goal is to hide activity from other people.
- Open Xbox Game Bar in Windows.
- Open the Settings widget.
- Choose More settings, then General.
- Change the available notification-placement choice to a position that is less distracting.
Xbox’s April 30, 2026 announcement documents this placement choice. It does not say that the setting disables achievement alerts, changes Gamerscore, or changes who can see account activity. For those purposes, use the console notification page or the Xbox privacy controls instead.

Child and family accounts
Microsoft says child privacy settings begin at the most restrictive level and describes family management for adjusting them. A child account may therefore show fewer choices than an adult account, or require a family organizer to make the change. Check the family-managed account’s privacy settings rather than copying an adult-account path and assuming every option will be available.
Family settings and notification preferences still serve different purposes: a parent can manage what a child account shares, while the child’s console may separately control which pop-ups appear locally. Changing one does not automatically perform the other.
Which Xbox setting should I change for a specific problem?
Match the symptom to the surface before changing anything. The table below separates quieting a display, limiting data sharing, and cleaning up a profile list.
| Symptom or goal | First action | Expected effect | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Achievement toast interrupts a game | Console Settings > Preferences > Notifications | Adjust the notifications shown on your console | That Gamerscore or account visibility changes |
| Other players should see less activity | Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize | Limit eligible sharing of achievements, statistics, presence, or related data | That public gamertags and leaderboard scores become private |
| A game should be less prominent in an achievement list | Check whether the Insider hide-game option is available | Potentially change the profile presentation | That the game, Gamerscore, or Xbox activity is erased |
| PC notifications appear in an inconvenient place | Game Bar Settings widget > More settings > General | Change where notifications appear | That alerts are disabled or privacy is changed |
Why did the setting not work?
Most problems come from using the right-looking menu for the wrong purpose, or from a preview feature not being available on the account. Work through these checks in order.
The achievement pop-up still appears
- Return to Settings > Preferences > Notifications and review the choices currently displayed, rather than relying on an older screenshot.
- Confirm that you changed the console where the pop-up appears. A Windows Game Bar placement setting does not control console alerts.
- Restart the game or console after saving if the interface has not refreshed.
- Remember that suppressing a toast cannot remove the underlying achievement or alter its Gamerscore.
People can still find my gamertag or leaderboard score
- Check the privacy page separately; notification settings cannot change account visibility.
- Microsoft classifies gamertags and leaderboard scores as public and says they cannot be hidden through these controls.
- Review the sharing choices for achievements, statistics, presence, and linked services individually, because one restriction does not necessarily cover every category.
The hide-game option is missing
- The feature was announced for selected Xbox Insiders, not as a confirmed universal release.
- Preview availability can differ by account, console software, and region.
- Do not delete or reset anything to make the option appear; use the standard privacy controls if your concern is data sharing.
The online privacy page will not open correctly
- Sign in to the Xbox account whose settings you intend to change.
- Make sure the browser allows JavaScript, as the accessible support page requires it.
- After changing settings, select Submit when the page presents that button.
- If you are managing a child account, use the family organizer’s controls and expect a more restrictive starting configuration.
How should I set up Xbox privacy without overcorrecting?
Use the least disruptive combination that matches your concern. Someone who dislikes interruptions may need only a local notification change, while someone concerned about social visibility must review account privacy as well.

- Write down the actual problem: screen interruptions, other people seeing activity, or a profile list you want to tidy.
- Change only the matching surface first: console notifications, Xbox privacy, Insider profile tools, or Windows Game Bar placement.
- Check the result against the intended audience: yourself, friends, other players, or linked services.
- Confirm the limits. Public gamertags and leaderboard scores remain public under Microsoft’s stated rule, and hidden games still count toward Gamerscore in the Insider feature.
- For a family account, have the organizer review the child profile after the change instead of assuming adult settings apply.
This approach avoids a common mistake: turning off a pop-up and believing that the achievement has become private, or hiding a profile entry and believing that Xbox has stopped reporting the activity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do Xbox menus look different from the instructions I found?
Xbox changes menu wording across console generations, software releases, account types, and Insider previews. Start from the documented top-level path, then use the labels shown on your own device; a missing preview option is not necessarily an error.

Can I manage Xbox privacy without an Xbox console?
Yes. Xbox provides a signed-in online privacy-settings route where you make the changes and select Submit. The web page may need JavaScript and an active account sign-in before its controls appear.
Will hiding a game remove it from my total Gamerscore?
No. The 2026 Insider announcement says a hidden game still contributes to total Gamerscore. The feature changes a profile-history presentation and does not erase the achievement record.
Why can a public leaderboard still show information after I changed privacy settings?
Microsoft classifies gamertags and leaderboard scores as public and says they cannot be hidden through these privacy controls. Other categories, such as achievements, game statistics, and presence, are handled through the account’s sharing choices.
Is there a verified mobile setting that disables achievement alerts?
The documented material does not establish a mobile achievement-alert switch or a universal mobile sequence. Use the console notification page for console pop-ups, or the signed-in privacy page when the issue is account-data sharing.
