Caterpie is the more dependable default when both are available: its evolution path is fixed, and Butterfree offers Compound Eyes plus access to useful status moves such as Sleep Powder. Wurmple evolves just as quickly, but its level-7 evolution branches into either Beautifly or Dustox, and the player cannot directly choose which one. The better pick still depends on the specific game: Caterpie and Wurmple are associated with different game regions, so this comparison does not mean both are catchable in the same early-game area.

Wurmple’s branch is best described as effectively random from the player’s perspective. The outcome is tied to a personality-related value or encryption constant; that is not the same as the game necessarily rolling a fresh random result at the moment of evolution. There is no dependable time-of-day or training trick to select Beautifly or Dustox.
How do Caterpie and Wurmple compare before evolving?
Their base-stat totals are identical at 195, but the points are distributed differently. Caterpie is much faster, while Wurmple has higher Attack and Special Defense in the cited game-data comparison.

These are species base stats, not the stats of every individual Pokémon in a save file. A particular Pokémon’s in-battle values depend on more than the species figures shown here. The equal total therefore does not mean the two have the same early-battle role: Caterpie’s listed Speed favors acting sooner, while Wurmple’s listed Attack and Special Defense are higher.

Butterfree’s learnset includes Confusion and Sleep Powder, giving the line both an attacking move and a status option. Exact move acquisition levels differ by game, so check the learnset for the specific release rather than relying on one version’s level. Compound Eyes is another reason the final form can be appealing, but it does not make Caterpie the right choice in every game or every situation.
What can Wurmple become?
Wurmple may end as Beautifly or Dustox, which have different typings and abilities. If either outcome suits your plans—or Wurmple is the locally available option—the uncertain branch may be acceptable; if you need one particular final form, it is a drawback.

Beautifly’s Swarm Ability powers up Bug-type moves when the Pokémon’s HP is low, according to The Pokémon Company’s Pokédex description. That ability description is not proof that Beautifly is universally stronger. - Confirm availability in your release. The cited listings place Caterpie in Kanto games and Wurmple in Hoenn games, including early Hoenn routes. This comparison does not establish that both appear on the same route or are available together in every game.

Which cards should I search for if I collect both Pokémon?
The official Pokémon TCG database identifies Wurmple Lost Origin 6/196 and Caterpie Sun & Moon 1/149. Those set names and collector numbers identify particular cards; they do not establish current stock, condition, or price.
Does a Wurmple’s evolution branch mean it is a different species before evolving?
No. Wurmple is the starting species in either case; the branch determines which intermediate and final species its evolution line reaches. The underlying value that determines the branch is not a player-facing selection.
