Blizzard’s notice footnote refers to the WoW: Forever Digital Upgrade or Collector’s Edition and states that the benefit applies only to the specific WoW account that made the purchase. 1. Update the graphics driver
Install the current driver supplied for your graphics hardware through the manufacturer’s normal update channel. Restart if the driver installer requests it. This is a readiness step from Blizzard, not a requirement to use a third-party optimizer or driver utility.
2. Update Battle.net
Open the Battle.net desktop app and allow any available application update to finish. An outdated launcher can leave the required game-version selector or launch controls unavailable until it updates.
3. Install the Forever client

4. Allow time for updates
Launch the installed client once before your preferred reservation attempt so updates can complete while there is still time to troubleshoot. The goal is to reach character creation without spending the opening minutes downloading files or changing accounts.
How many characters can I reserve?
Early Name Reservation permits up to three characters total across all rulesets. The allowance is shared, not three characters per ruleset.

Because every creation uses part of the same total, decide your priority before opening the flow. Put the character you would regret losing most at the top of your plan, then use the remaining slots for deliberately chosen alternatives rather than hurried experiments.
What is the difference between a first name and a secondary name?
Forever uses a two-name identity: a first name and a last or secondary name. The complete combination is unique within your region, so another player having the same first name does not automatically block your choice. Blizzard’s rule is that “what matters is the complete two-name combination.”

A popular first name may still be usable with a different secondary name. Conversely, a secondary name that is already paired with that first name can make the complete combination unavailable even if each individual word appears common. Search and evaluate the pair as one identity.
What the secondary name contributes
The secondary name can communicate a family, place, reputation, order, or other identity cue. Blizzard’s examples show that several related characters can share a secondary name, creating a recognizable family or group while giving each character a different first name.

Can the secondary name be hidden?
Yes. In the game, use Escape → Options → Nameplates → My Secondary Name to hide the secondary name above your character. This changes its presentation in the world; it does not remove the name from the character identity or from uniqueness checks. The secondary name remains visible in chat.
How should I prepare a name shortlist?
Prepare three to six complete combinations and rank them before you enter character creation. This is practical planning for a scarce, first-come process and a three-character cap, not an additional Blizzard requirement.

Write complete pairs, not isolated words
For each candidate, write the exact first name and secondary name together. Include capitalization as you intend to type it, then read the pair aloud. A name that looks good in a list may be difficult to spell or explain when it appears in chat.
Use a priority order
- Place your must-have combination first.
- Place a close thematic alternative second.
- Add combinations with different secondary names so one unavailable pairing does not eliminate the whole concept.
- Keep at least one broadly readable option that is unlikely to be confused with an official figure, organization, or restricted term.
Check communication
- Can another player distinguish the two parts when hearing them?
- Is the full pair easy to type in chat?
- Does the secondary name add useful context instead of looking like random characters?
- Would the pair still make sense if the secondary name is hidden above the character but visible in chat?
Do not spend a reservation slot testing tiny variations of a risky name. Move to the next complete pair when a choice is unavailable or rejected.
Which names can be rejected even if they pass an initial check?
A name passing an initial field check is not a promise that it complies with Blizzard’s Code of Conduct. Blizzard describes restrictions involving confusion, impersonation, restricted words, evasive spellings, repeated-character patterns, and attempts to split a restricted word across the two names.
Review both parts together
Moderation can consider the full combination, not only each field separately. A harmless-looking first name and secondary name may create a prohibited phrase when read together, while inserting punctuation or unusual spelling does not necessarily make a restricted term acceptable.

Avoid impersonation and confusion
Do not model a character name on an official identity in a way that could mislead other players. Avoid combinations designed to look like staff, support, celebrities, or another player’s established identity.
Do not rely on loopholes
Repeated characters, altered spellings, or splitting a restricted word between the two fields can still fall under naming restrictions. If a concept depends on such a workaround, replace it with a clean alternative before the reservation attempt.
How do I reserve my WoW Forever character name?
Have the eligible account selected, the Forever client installed, and your ranked pairs written down before starting. The client requires character creation as part of the reservation flow.
- Open Battle.net and confirm the qualifying WoW account is active.
- Launch World of Warcraft: Forever from the Game Version menu.
- Enter the character-creation flow when the reservation window is open for your region.
- Select the ruleset for the character you want to prioritize.
- Enter the first name and secondary name as one complete combination.
- Review the pair for spelling, readability, and naming-rule risks.
- Submit the character. If the pair is accepted and available, it uses one of your three total reservation slots.
- If the pair is taken or rejected, stop testing that variation and use the next complete combination on your list.
Since availability is first-come, first-served, preparation reduces the time spent making decisions after the flow opens. It cannot guarantee a name, because another player may claim the same complete combination first.
What happens if my name is taken or rejected?
If the full combination is already taken or fails naming requirements, choose another complete pair. Blizzard also points players to the in-game random name generator as a fallback.
If it is unavailable
Move to the next ranked combination rather than repeatedly changing one letter in the same name. A different secondary name may preserve the character concept while producing a new regional combination.

If it is rejected
Discard the risky construction and select a pair that does not resemble an impersonation, restricted term, evasive spelling, or prohibited repeated-character pattern. Do not assume that adding the same extra letter or dividing the word between fields solves the problem.
If you run out of ideas
Use the in-game random name generator, then assess the result for readability and identity before accepting it. The generator is a fallback for a stalled naming decision, not a way to bypass the naming rules.

Blizzard’s official article does not provide a complete numeric table covering maximum field length, punctuation, accented characters, or capitalization. Treat third-party lists of exact limits as unconfirmed unless the current live client or a later Blizzard specification verifies them.
That uncertainty changes how to prepare: favor ordinary, readable names and test your actual pair in the current client rather than planning around an unofficial character-count rule. If the client rejects a character or format, use a different complete combination instead of assuming a published list is authoritative.
What should I check immediately before the reservation window?
- The Battle.net account is the one that made the qualifying purchase.
- The graphics driver is updated.
- The Battle.net desktop app is current.
- World of Warcraft: Forever is installed and selected in the Game Version menu.
- Your first-choice pair and several backups are written down.

Does another player having my first name prevent me from using it?
Not automatically. Blizzard evaluates the complete first-name and secondary-name combination within your region, so the same first name can be possible when paired with a different secondary name. The exact pair you submit still has to be available and compliant.

You can hide it above your character through Escape → Options → Nameplates → My Secondary Name. That display setting does not remove the secondary name from your identity, and it continues to appear in chat.
Can I reserve more names later by switching rulesets?
The Early Name Reservation allowance is three characters total across all rulesets. Moving between PvP, Normal, and Role-Play does not create a separate allowance for each ruleset.
What is the fastest fallback when every planned name fails?
Use the in-game random name generator, then review the generated pair for clarity and compliance before accepting it. A generated name still consumes one of the shared reservation slots once the character is created.
