Yes, you can play World of Warcraft on a Steam Deck without installing Windows. On SteamOS, install Blizzard’s Windows Battle.net app as a non-Steam game and run it through Proton; then install WoW from Battle.net. On a Windows handheld, install Battle.net in Windows as usual. The Steam Deck method is a compatibility route, not official Blizzard Linux support, and controller mapping does not change Blizzard’s published keyboard-and-mouse requirement.

What do you need before you start?

Check storage and connectivity before downloading the launcher. Blizzard’s US WoW requirements list 128GB of available SSD space and a broadband connection. The 128GB figure is a listed requirement, not a promise that every installation will use exactly that much space. Leave room for the launcher, game updates, and other files rather than treating the listed number as an exact install-size estimate. Blizzard’s page lists requirements for Windows; SteamOS is not among its listed operating systems.

Steam Deck storage varies by model. Valve lists 512GB and 1TB built-in SSD configurations for the OLED Deck, and an older LCD configuration was sold with 64GB. Both Deck versions have a UHS-I microSD slot. A card can provide additional room, but its interface specification does not mean it performs like the internal SSD. If your Deck has limited free space, check the space available before beginning and decide where you want to keep game files; do not assume every installation must fit on the internal drive or that a card will behave identically to it. A 256GB UHS-I microSD card is one possible capacity to compare if you need more room, but readers with sufficient free storage do not need to buy one for the setup.

You also need a Battle.net account and an internet connection for this online game. A keyboard and mouse are optional accessories that can make setup and menu navigation easier, but they are not a substitute for the device’s controls. WoW’s published system requirements say: “Keyboard and mouse required. Other input devices are not supported.” Community control configurations may still be useful in practice; they are not official Blizzard controller support. Keep broadband access in mind for downloading the launcher, installing the game, and playing online. An offline-mode workaround is not a dependable way to play WoW during a trip without connectivity.

Before choosing a route, identify the operating system on the handheld. Steam Deck’s SteamOS is Linux-based, so its setup uses Proton to run the Windows Battle.net app. A Windows device such as the ASUS ROG Ally X instead uses Blizzard’s Windows installer directly. The two paths share Battle.net and the game download, but not the compatibility settings or file locations.

How do you install WoW on a Steam Deck?

The SteamOS method is to install the Windows Battle.net desktop app through Proton as a non-Steam shortcut. The important detail is to keep the same Steam shortcut—and therefore its Proton prefix—when you change it from the installer to the installed launcher.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Switch to Desktop Mode. Open the Deck’s power menu and choose the option to switch to Desktop Mode. Download the Windows Battle.net installer from Blizzard’s official desktop-app download. The installer is a Windows program; SteamOS does not run it natively.
  2. Add the installer to Steam. Open Steam in Desktop Mode. Choose Add a Non-Steam Game, browse to the downloaded Battle.net setup file, select it, and add it to your library. If the installer is not immediately visible in the file picker, check that you are browsing the folder where the download was saved.
  3. Enable Proton for that shortcut. In Steam, open the new shortcut’s Properties → Compatibility settings and force the use of a Proton compatibility tool. Then launch the shortcut and complete the Battle.net installation. A May 2026 walkthrough used Proton 9 as an example, but that is not a guarantee that it is the best or required version for every current system. The available compatibility tools and launcher behavior can change, so treat that version as an example rather than a universal recommendation.
  4. Close Battle.net after the installer finishes. The installer may launch Battle.net at the end. Quit it before changing the shortcut. The installed launcher is named Battle.net Launcher.exe and is inside the Proton prefix created for the shortcut. The walkthrough’s example location is beneath ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/, then the shortcut’s prefix number, then pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Battle.net/. The prefix number is not the same for everyone. Treat the path as a guide to the kind of location to find, not a fixed address to copy unchanged.
  5. Edit the existing shortcut to launch the installed app. Open that shortcut’s Steam properties. Change its target from the downloaded setup program to Battle.net Launcher.exe, and set the working directory to the folder containing that executable. Quote paths that contain spaces. Keep the original shortcut instead of deleting it and creating a new one: a new shortcut may use a different Proton prefix, leaving the installed launcher and its files behind in the old one.
  6. Launch Battle.net and install WoW. Start the edited shortcut, sign in, and select the WoW edition you want in Battle.net. When the download and installation finish, you can return to Gaming Mode and launch Battle.net from the non-Steam entry in your library.

The exact screens, folder names, sign-in behavior, and compatibility can change with SteamOS, Steam, Proton, and Battle.net updates. If a step looks different, check the shortcut’s target and working directory before making a replacement shortcut or deleting a prefix. Those settings determine whether Steam launches the installer or the installed launcher. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says, “Yes, you can run non-Steam games through Proton.” That statement describes the general capability; it is not a promise that every WoW update or Battle.net change will work without troubleshooting.

This is an installation of Blizzard’s Windows app in a compatibility layer, not a native Linux edition. If you use another handheld running SteamOS, do not assume its vendor support, launcher behavior, or controls will match the Deck exactly. Valve lists the Steam Deck and Legion Go S among its Powered by SteamOS devices, while support distinctions apply to other AMD handhelds.

Do you need to install Windows on the Steam Deck?

No. The SteamOS route runs the Windows Battle.net app through Proton, so installing Windows is not a prerequisite for this setup. Valve says, “Yes, you can run non-Steam games through Proton.” That establishes that Proton can run non-Steam games generally; it is not a guarantee that every WoW update or launcher change will work without issue.

SteamOS is Linux-based, while Blizzard’s US WoW system requirements list Windows and macOS. Treat the Deck procedure as a compatibility workaround rather than official Blizzard Linux support. It also should not be described as Steam Deck Verified status: this is a non-Steam installation, and the setup does not establish a verified rating or guaranteed compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, choose SteamOS direct-Proton if you are comfortable adding a non-Steam shortcut and editing its properties. You keep the game launcher available through Steam, including Gaming Mode, but may need to revisit the shortcut if an update changes launcher behavior. Installing Windows is a separate operating-system choice, not a required step in the Proton procedure; this guide does not make a performance comparison between Windows and SteamOS.

Can you use Lutris instead of a Steam shortcut?

Yes. Lutris is a separate SteamOS route, available as a Flatpak on Flathub. A May 2026 walkthrough describes installing Lutris, finding its Battle.net installer, completing the Wine-based setup, and launching Battle.net from Lutris.

Choose either the Steam non-Steam-shortcut method or the Lutris method as your setup path. They are alternatives, not layers to add on top of one another. Lutris may appeal if you prefer a game manager to handle the launcher setup; the Steam shortcut route keeps Battle.net available from Steam and can be launched in Gaming Mode. Neither option makes the installation an officially supported Linux version of WoW. If troubleshooting, identify which route you used before changing files or prefixes, since their configuration is different.

In short, the Steam shortcut route has a hands-on step for changing the executable and working directory after installation. Lutris provides its own Battle.net installation route, so its setup and maintenance are not the same as following the shortcut procedure. The dated Lutris walkthrough is evidence of that method, not a Blizzard guarantee or proof that future launcher updates will behave identically.

How do you install WoW on a Windows handheld?

A Windows handheld does not need the SteamOS Proton procedure. On a device such as the ASUS ROG Ally X, which ASUS identifies as Windows 11 hardware, download and run Blizzard’s Windows Battle.net app, sign in, install WoW, and configure the controls you want to use. The Steam Deck’s compatdata paths and Proton compatibility settings do not apply to this Windows setup.

The software installation path is more familiar on Windows, but that alone says nothing about frame rate, battery life, or how comfortably a particular handheld runs WoW. There is no measured WoW performance figure here for the Ally X or any other handheld. Pick control settings for the device you have and make sure the game and launcher are updated; do not infer a performance result from the operating system or the device’s general specifications.

For a buying decision, separate operating-system preference from performance claims. A Windows handheld uses the regular Windows Battle.net path and avoids the SteamOS Proton steps; a Steam Deck lets you use the SteamOS compatibility route without installing Windows. ASUS identifies the Ally X as Windows 11 hardware, while Valve publishes different official SteamOS device support distinctions. Neither fact is a WoW benchmark. If you already own a suitable device, start with its existing operating system rather than buying another handheld solely on an unverified assumption about WoW performance.

How can you make WoW controls work on a handheld?

There are two common approaches: configure Steam Input to map handheld controls to game actions, or install ConsolePort for a gamepad-oriented interface. They can be considered separately, and both involve configuration. Neither changes Blizzard’s published input requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WoW’s official requirements state that keyboard and mouse are required and other input devices are not supported. That is Blizzard’s published support position, not proof that community mappings or addons cannot function. If you want the most straightforward way to handle text entry, pointer precision, or setup menus, a keyboard and mouse remain useful accessories. A USB-C dock can make it easier to connect them or use an external display, but it is optional and does not raise the Deck’s performance.

Steam Input mapping

Steam Input lets you assign handheld controls to actions and can provide mouse-like navigation. The Steam Deck OLED also has trackpads, a touchscreen, thumbsticks, and four assignable rear grip buttons. Those options can help with pointer movement, menus, or custom bindings, but they do not ensure that every ability or interface task will feel natural on a small screen. A keyboard and mouse can make setup and precision-heavy navigation more straightforward.

Steam Input is a good fit if you want to shape a layout around the Deck’s built-in controls, trackpad, touchscreen, or grip buttons. It can avoid adding an addon, but mapping buttons and deciding how to handle pointer-like actions takes configuration. It is not the same thing as a game designed and officially supported for a controller, so expect to adjust your layout to your own interface and play style.

If controls act like a desktop mouse when you expected in-game bindings, check the Steam shortcut currently launching WoW and the controller configuration attached to that shortcut. A September 2026 troubleshooting report described one case in which an already-running Battle.net instance caused Steam to lose track of the game process and revert its controller layout. Treat that as a reported failure mode, not a universal explanation or guaranteed fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ConsolePort

ConsolePort, by MunkDev, provides gamepad-oriented action bars, bindings, keyboard, and menu features. Select the addon file that matches the WoW edition you play—Retail or the specific Classic edition—instead of assuming that one file works across all editions. Its listing included files for several editions and showed an October 21, 2026 update. That listing does not prove that every edition or future game patch will work identically.

ConsolePort can suit players who want an interface designed around a controller, while Steam Input can suit those who prefer to map controls themselves or use the handheld’s trackpad and touchscreen. The addon brings its own setup and patch-maintenance considerations; a custom Steam Input layout also takes configuration. Choose based on the interface you prefer and the amount of setup you are willing to do, not on an assumption that either method is officially supported by Blizzard.

For the question “doesn’t WoW have decent controller support these days,” distinguish a usable community setup from Blizzard’s stated requirement. ConsolePort offers controller-oriented interface features, and Steam Input can translate controls, but the published Blizzard requirement remains keyboard and mouse. A controller setup may be practical for a particular player without becoming official support or working the same way across every WoW edition and future update.

What should you check if Battle.net keeps opening the installer?

The shortcut may still point to the downloaded setup file rather than the installed launcher. Open the existing Steam shortcut’s properties and check whether its target is the installed Battle.net Launcher.exe and its working directory is the launcher’s folder. If you replace the shortcut instead of editing it, Steam may create a different Proton prefix and fail to find the installation made under the original one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First confirm which shortcut you are launching; a desktop icon or duplicate library entry may still lead to the installer. Next check the executable path and working directory in the original entry. The installed launcher lives within that shortcut’s Proton prefix, whose numbered folder varies by installation. If Battle.net was installed through Lutris instead, use that Lutris setup rather than trying to apply Steam’s prefix paths to it. Keep the two routes distinct while troubleshooting.

Will docking or offline mode solve a problem?

Docking can make it easier to connect a keyboard and mouse or play on an external display, but Valve says docking does not increase Steam Deck performance. WoW also needs an internet connection for online play, so an offline-mode workaround is not a reliable travel plan. Confirm that you will have a suitable connection before relying on WoW away from home.

Valve documents Remote Play from a home PC to a Deck. That is a separate option from installing WoW on SteamOS: it needs a configured host PC, and the available information does not verify a WoW-specific streaming setup. Do not count on it as a guaranteed substitute for installing the game or as a fix for a launcher or control problem. If you use it, treat it as a separate home-PC streaming arrangement, not a way to avoid Battle.net setup on the Deck that is running the game.

Which route should you use?

Route What it involves Best fit Important limitation
SteamOS with a Steam shortcut Add the Windows Battle.net installer as a non-Steam game, force Proton, then edit that same shortcut to target the installed launcher. Steam Deck owners who want Battle.net available through Steam and Gaming Mode. Compatibility is through Proton, not official Blizzard Linux support; preserve the original prefix.
SteamOS with Lutris Install Lutris as a Flatpak and use its Battle.net installation route. SteamOS users who prefer Lutris to a manually edited Steam shortcut. It is an alternative setup path, not an extension of the Steam-shortcut procedure.
Windows handheld Install and run Blizzard’s Windows Battle.net app in Windows. Owners of a Windows handheld who want to use its existing Windows environment. SteamOS and Proton steps do not apply; this does not establish device-specific performance.

For a Steam Deck that already has enough free storage, no hardware purchase is necessary just to begin the software setup. If storage is tight, compare the space available with Blizzard’s listed 128GB requirement and consider the Deck’s UHS-I microSD slot as added capacity, without assuming card performance equals internal SSD performance. A 256GB UHS-I card is a possible shopping search for extra capacity, not a required accessory or a promise of SSD-like behavior. If control precision is the main concern, try a mapping approach or consider a keyboard and mouse; if the interface itself is the obstacle, ConsolePort is the more gamepad-oriented option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LCD versus OLED is a choice to make from the hardware you own or want, not from an unsupported WoW frame-rate comparison. Valve’s OLED configurations list 512GB and 1TB SSD capacity, while the older LCD line included a 64GB option; both have UHS-I microSD slots. The OLED Deck also offers trackpads, touchscreen, thumbsticks, and four rear grip buttons that can be assigned. Consider available capacity, screen and battery specifications, and whether you already own one of the models. There is no WoW-specific battery-life or frame-rate measurement here to establish that one version plays the game better.

Frequently asked questions

How did you install World of Warcraft on Steam Deck?

Add Blizzard’s Windows Battle.net installer to Steam as a non-Steam game, force Proton in its compatibility properties, and run the installer. Afterward, edit that same shortcut to target the installed Battle.net Launcher executable in its Proton prefix. Install WoW from Battle.net.

Can I move my Battle.net setup to another Steam Deck?

The installed launcher and its Proton prefix are associated with the shortcut’s configuration, so copying only the shortcut is not the same as transferring the installation. Expect to set up Battle.net on the new device, and avoid reusing a prefix path from another Deck as though it were universal.

Is a microSD card suitable for World of Warcraft on Steam Deck?

The Deck has a UHS-I microSD slot, so a card can add storage capacity. UHS-I support alone does not establish that game loading or updates will perform like they do on the internal SSD; check available space and choose storage with that distinction in mind.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every handheld that can run SteamOS have the same support status?

No. Valve lists the Steam Deck and Legion Go S among its Powered by SteamOS devices, while support distinctions apply to other AMD handhelds. Do not assume that another handheld has the same vendor-supported SteamOS installation or setup steps.

Will ConsolePort keep working after every WoW update?

That is not guaranteed. The addon listing showed files for multiple editions and an October 21, 2026 update, but it does not establish compatibility with every future patch; check the addon file and its current status for your specific edition.

Does docking make WoW run faster?

No performance increase should be assumed. Valve says docking does not increase Steam Deck performance. A dock may make it easier to use an external display, keyboard, or mouse, but it is not a performance upgrade.

Can I play WoW offline on a trip?

WoW is an online game and needs connectivity for online play. An offline-mode workaround is not a reliable travel plan, so confirm you will have a suitable connection before depending on the game away from home.

Do you need to install Windows on the Deck to run WoW?

No. The SteamOS route uses the Windows Battle.net app through Proton as a non-Steam game. That is a compatibility route, not official Blizzard Linux support or a guarantee of uninterrupted compatibility.

Does WoW have controller support on a handheld?

Blizzard’s published requirement says keyboard and mouse are required and other input devices are not supported. Steam Input mappings and the ConsolePort addon can provide practical controller-oriented options, but they do not change Blizzard’s support statement.

Is the Steam Deck OLED better than the LCD model for WoW?

The OLED models have 512GB or 1TB built-in SSD configurations, while an older LCD model was sold with 64GB; both have a UHS-I microSD slot. Compare storage, screen and battery specifications, and the device you already own. There is no WoW-specific benchmark here to show that either model runs the game faster or lasts longer.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Steam Deck owners can try WoW on SteamOS by installing Battle.net as a non-Steam game through Proton, then editing the same shortcut to launch the installed app. Windows handhelds use Blizzard’s standard Windows installation path. Plan for Blizzard’s listed 128GB available SSD requirement, keep an internet connection, and treat controller mappings or ConsolePort as community configuration rather than official controller support.
