WordPress transients are temporary, named cache values. Your code writes one with set_transient(), reads it with get_transient(), and removes it with delete_transient(). The expiration is a maximum lifetime, not a promise that the value will remain available until then. The WP-CLI command wp transient delete invalidates transients only: it does not automatically clear page caches, a CDN, a reverse proxy, a browser cache, or a plugin’s separate cache. Use a key-specific delete when one result is stale, --expired for cleanup, and --all only when a broad regeneration is intentional. On multisite, choose the network scope explicitly.

What is a WordPress transient, and why does it matter?

A transient is a value stored temporarily under a string key so WordPress can reuse work across requests. Typical examples include a remote API response, a calculated list of products, a rendered fragment, or an expensive database query. Instead of rebuilding that result on every page load, code checks the transient first and regenerates it only after a miss.

The Transients API is designed to store information “temporarily … across page loads.” Unlike a permanent option, a transient is expected to become disposable. It may vanish before its requested lifetime, so application logic must always have a regeneration path.

WordPress exposes three lifecycle functions:

  • set_transient() writes or replaces a value.
  • get_transient() retrieves the value or reports a miss.
  • delete_transient() removes one named value.

Transient values can be arrays or objects; the API serializes complex PHP values for storage and restores them when read. The documented maximum name length for the database-backed route is 172 characters because WordPress adds prefixes to the key.

How does the transient API work?

The API follows a cache-aside pattern: read first, calculate on a miss, then save the result.

Writing a value with set_transient()

The function takes a name, a value, and an expiration in seconds:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
$value = fetch_remote_data();
set_transient( 'weather_london', $value, 15 * MINUTE_IN_SECONDS );

The expiration is expressed in seconds. Passing zero means no expiration in the function reference, although non-expiring values have different autoload implications on database-backed installs. Because a transient is disposable by design, use a finite lifetime unless you have a specific reason not to.

Reading with get_transient()

A read returns the stored value when it is present and valid. If the key is absent or expired, the return value is false:

$cached = get_transient( 'weather_london' );
if ( $cached === false ) {
    $cached = fetch_remote_data();
    set_transient( 'weather_london', $cached, 15 * MINUTE_IN_SECONDS );
}

Use the strict comparison === false. A valid cached value can be 0, an empty string, or another falsey value; a loose check such as if ( ! $cached ) would mistake that data for a cache miss. Avoid using a plain boolean false as the only legitimate payload when your code needs to distinguish a stored value from a miss.

On the database path, WordPress checks the timeout while reading and can delete an expired value during that read. With an external object cache, expiration and eviction are handled by that cache implementation, but the API still presents a miss as false.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Removing one value with delete_transient()

To invalidate a known key from PHP, call:

delete_transient( 'weather_london' );

The function returns a boolean result. Without a persistent object cache, WordPress removes the transient option and its associated timeout option. With an external object cache, WordPress uses the object-cache deletion path instead.

How long do transients really last?

An expiration is a ceiling, not a guarantee of availability. WordPress documentation explicitly notes that transients can expire earlier because of external object-cache behavior or database changes, but they will not return their value after the requested expiration.

That means transient data must be reproducible. If an early eviction causes an outage rather than a normal recalculation, the value belongs in a more durable storage system or the regeneration code needs a fallback. Treat every read as potentially missing, even seconds after a successful write.

Expiration also does not guarantee immediate physical cleanup in every storage implementation. A database-backed transient may be removed when WordPress encounters it as expired; object-cache servers may evict it according to their own policies. Your code should care about the returned value, not assume a particular cleanup timing.

Where are transients stored?

Storage depends on the active WordPress cache implementation.

Installation Typical transient location Operational implication
Single-site without a persistent object-cache drop-in wp_options, with a value entry and timeout entry Database reads and writes handle the transient.
Multisite without a persistent object-cache drop-in wp_options for site transients; wp_sitemeta for network transients Site and network namespaces are separate.
Persistent object cache enabled The WordPress object-cache layer, commonly backed by a service such as Redis or Memcached The transient may never be written to the database.

This distinction matters when troubleshooting. Looking only in the database can miss a transient that is currently held by a persistent object cache. Conversely, deleting a database row does not prove that an independently managed cache layer has been purged.

What does wp transient delete actually do?

wp transient delete is the WP-CLI wrapper for transient invalidation. A targeted command removes one named key:

wp transient delete sample_key

Use that form when you know which cached result became stale—for example, after changing content, a setting, a taxonomy term, a remote response, or generated markup represented by that key. The next request that needs the value will take the miss path and regenerate it.

The command’s scope is the transient layer selected by WordPress and WP-CLI. A successful deletion does not claim that a full-page cache, reverse proxy, CDN, browser cache, or plugin-specific cache was cleared. Those systems require their own documented invalidation command or control panel action.

What is the difference between --expired, --all, and --network?

The switches change either which entries are selected or which multisite namespace is addressed.

Command What it selects Best use Risk to consider
wp transient delete KEY One named transient in the current scope A known stale result after a content or settings change Requires the exact key.
wp transient delete --expired Expired transients in the current scope Housekeeping when you want to remove entries that are already expired It does not invalidate still-valid values.
wp transient delete --all Every transient in the selected local scope A deliberate broad reset or an incident that requires all values to regenerate Many expensive queries or remote requests can run again at once.
wp transient delete --network (with a deletion mode) Network/site transients in a multisite network A stale network-wide value It does not automatically remove each site’s local transients.

--network changes the namespace; it is not a synonym for “all sites.” If every site-local transient must be removed on multisite, run the appropriate local-scope deletion for each site after handling network transients. Confirm the target site or network before executing a broad command.

When should you run wp transient delete KEY?

Use a targeted delete when one known cached result no longer reflects its source data. This preserves unrelated cache entries and limits the amount of regeneration work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Content updates: invalidate a key that stores a generated list or fragment built from edited posts or terms.
  • Configuration changes: remove a value derived from a setting, feature flag, or integration credential.
  • Taxonomy changes: clear a result whose query depends on categories, tags, or other terms.
  • Remote API changes: delete a response cache when the upstream data has been corrected or its request parameters changed.
  • Generated markup changes: invalidate a fragment after changing the template or rendering logic that produces it.

Best practice is to put invalidation next to the event that makes data stale. For example, a plugin can call delete_transient() from the setting-update or content-update workflow rather than asking an administrator to flush every transient.

When is --expired the right maintenance choice?

Choose --expired when the objective is cleanup, not a forced rebuild. It removes entries whose lifetimes have already ended while leaving currently valid cached results available.

This is useful for a maintenance window or a database cleanup task where you want to reduce expired-entry clutter without creating a simultaneous miss for every feature. It does not repair a still-valid but incorrect value; that key needs targeted invalidation.

When is --all justified, and why can it hurt?

--all is a broad invalidation tool. Use it for a deliberate cache reset or an incident where identifying individual keys is impractical and you accept the resulting regeneration load.

After a broad delete, many requests can miss at the same time. They may repeat expensive database queries, remote API calls, or rendering work. The command reference defines the deletion scope, while the regeneration burst is an operational consequence of making every transient unavailable. Schedule the reset when traffic and upstream rate limits can tolerate it, and monitor error rates and request latency afterward.

Do not make --all your routine response to one stale page. Identify and remove the smallest affected key whenever possible.

How do multisite transient scopes work?

Multisite has both site-local and network-wide transients. Site-local values belong to an individual site; network transients are shared at the network level and use the network metadata storage path when the database is involved.

When a network transient is wrong, include --network in the WP-CLI deletion command and target the relevant key or deletion mode. If every site’s local values also need to be regenerated, process those sites separately. A network deletion alone does not reach each site’s local namespace.

Before using --all on a multisite installation, verify whether the command is operating on the current site or the network scope. A mistaken scope can leave the stale value untouched—or remove considerably more data than intended.

Why is a page still stale after deleting a transient?

Because a transient is only one cache layer. Deleting it makes the next application read regenerate that transient, but another layer may continue serving an older response.

  1. Confirm that the key you deleted is the key used by the code serving the page.
  2. Make one request that reaches WordPress and verify that the transient is regenerated.
  3. Check for a full-page cache, reverse proxy, CDN, browser cache, or plugin-specific cache in front of or beside WordPress.
  4. Purge the relevant layer using its own supported mechanism, if it is responsible for the stale response.
  5. Re-test while distinguishing an origin response from a cached response.

The transient command cannot be used as evidence that every cache in the delivery path was purged. Its documented effect stops at the selected transient namespace.

What coding patterns make transient misses safe?

Keep the miss path deterministic and cheap enough to run when the cache disappears early.

$key   = 'catalog_featured_v2';
$value = get_transient( $key );

if ( false === $value ) {
    $value = build_featured_catalog();

    if ( $value !== false ) {
        set_transient( $key, $value, HOUR_IN_SECONDS );
    }
}

return $value;

The version suffix in this example is an application convention: changing it creates a new namespace when the data shape or generation logic changes. It is not a WordPress requirement. The important rules are to check strictly for false, regenerate on a miss, and avoid treating a transient as the authoritative copy of business data.

If regeneration can be expensive, add application-level safeguards such as a short-lived lock or a fallback to a previously stored durable value. Those controls are outside the Transients API itself, but they prevent simultaneous misses from overwhelming a database or remote service.

What are the main transient API pitfalls?

  • Assuming the timeout is a guarantee: external caches and database changes can remove values early.
  • Using loose falsey checks: 0, an empty string, or another valid falsey payload can be mistaken for a miss.
  • Using oversized names: the documented database-backed limit is 172 characters after accounting for WordPress prefixes.
  • Storing canonical data only in a transient: a transient can disappear at any time, so durable records belong elsewhere.
  • Flushing everything for a local problem: broad invalidation creates unnecessary regeneration work.
  • Expecting transient deletion to clear page delivery caches: each cache layer has an independent scope and invalidation method.
  • Ignoring multisite scope: network and site-local values are different namespaces.

Which action should you choose?

Situation Preferred action Reason
One known result is stale after a change wp transient delete KEY Limits invalidation to the affected value.
You want to remove expired entries wp transient delete --expired Cleans up expired values without discarding valid ones.
A broad incident requires regeneration in one scope wp transient delete --all Invalidates the complete selected transient set; plan for misses.
A network transient is stale on multisite Add --network Selects the network namespace.
The page remains stale afterward Inspect and purge other cache layers The transient command does not cover them.

The practical rule is simple: invalidate the narrowest scope that fixes the stale data, and reserve broad deletion for cases where its regeneration cost is understood and acceptable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a transient be used as permanent WordPress data?

No. A transient is an optimization layer, not an authoritative record. Keep important business data in durable WordPress tables or another persistent store, and make the transient a rebuildable copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will deleting a transient log users out or remove their accounts?

Normally no; transient deletion targets temporary cache values. It would affect user-visible state only if custom code incorrectly stored session or account data in transients, which is not an appropriate design for durable identity or authentication state.

What happens if two requests miss the same transient at once?

Both requests can enter the regeneration path unless the application adds its own coordination. For expensive work, use a short-lived lock or another stampede-control technique, and keep a durable fallback when one exists.

Does a zero expiration make a transient safer from eviction?

No. Zero means no expiration in the function reference, but an external object cache or database operation can still remove the value. Non-expiring database-backed values also have different autoload implications, so choose that setting deliberately.
