Use the WordPress REST API when an AI agent or application needs direct HTTP and JSON access to a site’s supported data. Use MCP when an AI client should discover and invoke a deliberately limited set of tools or read agent-oriented resources. They are not interchangeable standards: REST defines resource endpoints, while MCP defines how an AI host connects to tools, resources, and prompts exposed by a server.

The practical choice depends on task scope. The REST API is the better starting point for general site data, custom applications, and operations such as reading or editing posts, pages, media, taxonomies, users, settings, and plugins, subject to route and capability checks. The official WordPress.org MCP server documented by WordPress is narrower: it assists with Plugin Directory guidelines, readme validation, submission status, and plugin submissions. It does not establish MCP as a general connector for managing every WordPress site.

What is the WordPress REST API?

The WordPress REST API is a JSON interface for applications to query, create, and modify supported WordPress data. A client sends HTTP requests to resource-oriented routes and receives JSON responses. Public content can usually be read without credentials, while private data and management actions require authentication and the WordPress account must have the capability needed for that operation.

Common resources include posts, pages, media, taxonomies, users, settings, plugins, and other objects exposed by the site. A typical post request uses a route such as /wp-json/wp/v2/posts, but the exact routes, fields, registered custom post types, and permissions depend on the site and its installed components. Route discovery and the site’s permission checks are therefore part of building a reliable agent.

What the REST API gives an agent

  • Direct HTTP access that works from scripts, back-end services, automation platforms, and custom agent runtimes.
  • Structured JSON requests and responses that can be logged, tested, cached, and validated independently of a particular AI client.
  • Access to the site’s existing data model and registered endpoints rather than a separate agent-specific copy of content.
  • Fine-grained authorization through WordPress users, capabilities, nonces, and application passwords.

The REST API is an interface to WordPress data, not an autonomous planner. Your agent still needs code or a framework that decides which endpoint to call, how to validate arguments, and when to ask a person for confirmation.

What is MCP, and how is it different from REST?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an agent-facing protocol. An MCP client connects to an MCP server that advertises tools, resources, and sometimes guided prompts. The AI host can then discover those capabilities and choose a tool call in the format defined by the server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MCP does not define WordPress posts, pages, or permissions. A particular MCP server decides what operations exist, what input schema each tool accepts, which resources are readable, and how credentials are handled. Two servers that both connect to WordPress can expose very different capabilities and security boundaries.

Tools, resources, and prompts

  • Tools perform actions, such as validating a file, checking a status, or submitting a change.
  • Resources provide information for the model to read, such as guidelines or reference material.
  • Prompts can provide reusable, guided interaction patterns when the server implements them.

This abstraction can make an AI client easier to use because the model sees named operations and schemas instead of having to construct arbitrary HTTP requests. The trade-off is coverage: the model can do only what that MCP server exposes. MCP therefore changes the interaction layer, not the underlying WordPress content model.

Which should you choose for a specific AI-agent job?

Start with the operation you must support, then verify that the selected interface actually exposes it. The following framework reflects the documented WordPress REST API and the official WordPress.org MCP example.

Need Better starting point Reason
General access to supported site data for a custom app, script, integration, or agent WordPress REST API It provides resource-oriented HTTP endpoints with JSON requests and responses.
An AI client should invoke a curated set of actions or read agent-oriented information An MCP server that supports the task MCP supplies the discovery and tool/resource interface; the server determines the actual operations.
Plugin Directory guidelines, readme validation, review status, or submission work WordPress.org MCP server Those are the documented capabilities of the official server.
Custom site operations absent from the documented WordPress.org tools REST API directly, or a verified custom MCP server The official MCP documentation does not establish general site CRUD or arbitrary administration.

No official source establishes a universal winner for speed, cost, or security. Compare the implementation you are considering on task coverage, agent usability, authentication and credential lifecycle, WordPress capability enforcement, client and server setup, and who maintains the code.

When is the REST API the better choice?

Choose REST first when your agent needs broad or evolving access to a WordPress site’s own resources. It is also the safer default when you control the application and want tests, explicit request construction, and predictable handling of HTTP status codes.

Use REST for general site workflows

  • Retrieve published or private posts and pages according to the requesting user’s permissions.
  • Create or update content after validating title, body, status, taxonomy, and media references.
  • Upload or inspect media and associate it with content.
  • Read taxonomies, users, settings, plugins, or custom routes that the site exposes.
  • Build a service that is not tied to one desktop AI client or MCP host.

What your implementation must supply

A REST-based agent needs an endpoint map, input validation, retry and timeout handling, response validation, audit logging, and a policy for destructive actions. It should not let a model freely choose arbitrary routes. Wrap only the operations the agent needs, constrain field values, and require confirmation before publishing, deleting, changing users, or altering settings.

When is MCP the better choice?

Choose MCP when the user works in an MCP-compatible AI client and the required workflow already exists as a maintained MCP server. The protocol is especially useful when you want the model to discover a small, named set of actions rather than construct general-purpose API calls.

The documented WordPress.org example

WordPress.org documents an MCP server for Plugin Directory work. Its stated capabilities include reading plugin guidelines, validating a plugin readme, retrieving submission review status and feedback, and submitting a new plugin or an update to a submission that is still under review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That workflow remains subject to the normal Plugin Directory review process. After approval, updates are published through Subversion. The example should therefore be understood as an agent interface for WordPress.org plugin workflow, not as evidence that MCP can draft and publish arbitrary posts on a self-hosted WordPress installation.

Check the server before relying on it

  • List every tool and resource it exposes, including read-only and write operations.
  • Confirm whether it targets WordPress.org or a specific self-hosted site.
  • Review the account and capabilities it requests.
  • Understand where credentials are stored, how they are revoked, and who maintains the server.
  • Test invalid input, denied permissions, timeouts, and partial failures before allowing production writes.

How do you set up a REST-based agent?

The exact code depends on your language and agent framework, but the integration sequence is consistent.

  1. Inventory the required operations. Write down each read and write action, the resource it touches, the fields it needs, and whether a human must approve it.
  2. Inspect the target site’s routes. Confirm that the required core, custom-post-type, taxonomy, media, or plugin endpoint exists and identify its supported fields and methods.
  3. Create a dedicated WordPress user. Give it only the capabilities required by the workflow. Avoid using a site owner’s account for routine automation.
  4. Select authentication. Use cookie authentication and a REST nonce for same-site requests made while a user is logged in. For an external service, use an Application Password over HTTPS with HTTP Basic Authentication when the site permits it.
  5. Build narrow functions. Expose functions such as “create draft post” or “attach existing media,” rather than a generic function that accepts an arbitrary URL and method.
  6. Validate before sending. Check lengths, allowed statuses, IDs, taxonomy terms, and content policy. Reject unknown fields and unsafe state transitions.
  7. Handle the response. Distinguish authentication failures, capability denials, validation errors, rate or timeout conditions, and server errors. Record the request purpose and WordPress response ID without logging secrets.
  8. Test with a non-production site. Verify drafts, revisions, media, and rollback behavior before granting publishing or deletion capability.

How does the official WordPress.org MCP setup work?

The documented setup requires a compatible MCP client and Node.js 18 or later. The listed instructions cover Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, and VS Code, with manual configuration also available.

  1. Choose a supported MCP client. Confirm that it can run the server and display its tools and resources.
  2. Install or configure the WordPress.org MCP server. Follow the client-specific configuration location described by WordPress.org rather than copying settings between clients without checking their formats.
  3. Authorize with an Application Password. The connection uses a WordPress application password associated with the account you authorize.
  4. Complete a narrow test. Ask the client to read plugin guidelines or validate a readme, then verify that the result matches the expected Plugin Directory workflow.
  5. Remove access when finished. Revoke the application password from the account’s application-password administration screen or use the client’s removal procedure.

The credential is displayed only once. Reauthorizing replaces the existing MCP application password for that account, so an older connection will stop working. Treat the one-time display as a secret-delivery event and store the value only in the client or secret manager that needs it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do authentication and permissions differ?

Neither REST nor MCP bypasses WordPress authorization. An MCP tool ultimately performs work through the permissions available to its server and account; a REST request is checked against the authenticated user and the route’s required capability.

Cookie authentication and nonces

WordPress documents cookie authentication for requests made within WordPress when the user is logged in. REST nonces protect those requests against cross-site request forgery and must be sent when making manual authenticated requests. This pattern is appropriate for a same-site interface, not a convenient substitute for managing credentials in an external service.

Application Passwords

Application Passwords are tied to a WordPress user, intended for programmatic API authentication rather than interactive login, stored hashed, shown only at creation, and individually revocable. WordPress documents their use with HTTPS and HTTP Basic Authentication. Site configuration can disable or limit them, so verify availability before designing the integration.

Use a least-privilege account, HTTPS, secret storage, rotation, and an audit trail. A valid credential proves identity; it does not grant capabilities the account does not have. If an operation fails with a permission error, changing the AI prompt will not fix it; the route, user role, and site policy must be checked.

Can REST and MCP be used together?

Yes. They can be complementary layers, but the architecture must be verified for the implementation you choose. An MCP server may expose a small set of agent-friendly tools and call WordPress REST endpoints underneath. In that design, MCP is the model-facing contract and REST is the site-facing transport.

A controlled combined architecture

  1. The AI client discovers only the MCP tools approved for the workflow.
  2. The MCP server validates tool arguments and maps them to known REST routes.
  3. The WordPress site authenticates the request and enforces capabilities.
  4. The server normalizes WordPress responses, hides unnecessary fields, and returns a result the model can interpret.
  5. Human approval gates publishing, deletion, user changes, and settings changes.

Do not assume that every MCP server uses REST, offers the same safeguards, or is maintained by WordPress. Inspect its implementation and documentation before granting production credentials.

What are the main failure modes?

The agent cannot find a requested operation

With REST, the route may not be registered, may use a custom namespace, or may require a plugin. With MCP, the server may simply not expose that tool. Confirm the route or tool list before changing credentials.

A request is authenticated but forbidden

Check the WordPress account’s capability for that specific action, the endpoint’s permission callback, and any site-level restriction. An Application Password authenticates the account but does not elevate its role.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The MCP client will not connect

Verify Node.js 18 or later, the client configuration path, the server command, and the one-time authorization flow. If the account was reauthorized, replace the old credential because the prior MCP application password was revoked.

Content changes partially succeed

Record the WordPress response ID and status, make retries idempotent where possible, and check whether the first request created a draft or media item before repeating it. Never blindly retry a publish or delete request.

A tool appears broader than expected

Stop and inspect its schema and implementation. Remove production credentials until you understand every write operation, data flow, maintenance owner, and revocation path.

What should you compare before approving an integration?

Criterion Questions to answer
Task coverage Does it expose every required resource or tool, including custom types and media?
Agent usability Can the model discover clear names, schemas, constraints, and expected results?
Authentication Which credential is used, where is it stored, and how is it rotated or revoked?
Authorization Which WordPress user and capabilities perform each action?
Client setup Which MCP clients, runtime versions, configuration files, and operating systems are supported?
Failure handling Are validation errors, timeouts, duplicate requests, and partial writes visible and recoverable?
Maintenance Who updates the server when WordPress, Node.js, or the client changes?
Security ownership Who can access content and credentials, and how quickly can access be removed?

The official documentation does not provide a universal cost, performance, or security ranking. Treat those as implementation-specific evaluation questions rather than assuming one protocol is inherently superior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which integration is the practical default?

For a new general-purpose WordPress agent, begin with a narrow REST wrapper because it gives you direct coverage of the site’s documented resources and lets you enforce your own validation and approval policy. Add MCP when your users need an MCP-compatible client and a maintained server can present the required operations safely.

For Plugin Directory assistance, the official WordPress.org MCP server is the direct fit because its tools and resource are documented for that workflow. For drafting or publishing content on a self-hosted site, verify a separate server’s current tool list and security model; the official example does not promise those capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI agent call the WordPress REST API without MCP?

Yes. An agent can send authenticated or public HTTP requests directly, provided its code handles endpoint discovery, argument validation, permissions, and error recovery. MCP is optional and adds a standardized discovery layer for clients that support it.

What happens if I lose an Application Password used by an MCP connection?

It cannot be displayed again after creation. Revoke it and authorize a new connection; reauthorization replaces the previous MCP application password for that account, so update any client that still uses the old value.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the WordPress.org MCP server publish plugins automatically?

No. Its documented submission tools send a new plugin or an update for review, and submissions still go through the normal review process. Approved updates are published through Subversion.

How can I limit an agent to drafts instead of published posts?

Use a dedicated WordPress account whose capabilities and endpoint wrapper allow draft creation but not publishing or deletion. Enforce the status restriction in your integration code as well as through WordPress permissions, then test denied transitions on a staging site.
