WooCommerce and Magento organize ecommerce data differently. WooCommerce builds on WordPress tables and adds purpose-specific tables; depending on the store’s configuration, orders may use the older posts-and-metadata pattern or WooCommerce’s High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS). Magento uses a modular resource-model architecture and EAV tables to represent many catalog and customer attributes. Those differences affect how you find data, write integrations, and maintain a store—but they do not establish a universal performance winner.
If you need to inspect or migrate a store, first identify its active order-storage model in WooCommerce or account for Magento’s attribute and store identifiers. A table name alone does not tell the whole story.

WooCommerce extends WordPress’s relational data model, combining familiar WordPress tables with WooCommerce-specific tables. Magento organizes data through resource models and uses Entity-Attribute-Value (EAV) storage for models including customers, catalog items, and orders.
That distinction shapes everyday database work. In WooCommerce, a product’s information may be split between WordPress records, metadata, taxonomy relationships, and lookup tables. In Magento, a product’s values are associated with entity and attribute identifiers, with store scope also relevant to some values. Neither platform is simply a single table per product or order.

| Question | WooCommerce | Magento |
|---|---|---|
| Core model | WordPress tables plus WooCommerce custom tables | Modular resource models, with EAV for customer, catalog, and order resource models |
| Flexible catalog attributes | Often represented through metadata or extension tables | Represented through EAV; extension attributes can draw on separate tables |
| Order storage | Legacy posts and postmeta, or HPOS custom order tables | Sales and related module tables within the resource-model architecture |
| Read-oriented structures | Includes product and order lookup tables | Includes index tables for price, stock, category-product, and EAV data |
| Key query challenge | Finding related values across metadata, taxonomies, and possibly different order stores | Joining entity, attribute, and store identifiers, and understanding indexed data |
These are architectural differences, not benchmark results. Performance depends on the actual store and its query patterns, extensions, indexes, database engine, and caching configuration.
Where are WooCommerce products and orders stored?
WooCommerce product and order data can be distributed across WordPress’s standard tables and WooCommerce’s own tables. Products use the WordPress post and metadata model; legacy WooCommerce orders use that same general pattern, while HPOS stores orders in dedicated tables when it is authoritative.

Product records and their metadata use wp_posts and wp_postmeta. Product categories, tags, attributes, shipping classes, and tax classes are represented through wp_terms, wp_termmeta, wp_term_taxonomy, and wp_term_relationships. Settings are stored in wp_options.
The wp_ prefix is a common example, not a safe assumption for every site: WordPress table names normally carry the site’s configured prefix. When examining a database, identify the actual prefix before constructing table names. Product data may also be reflected in dedicated lookup tables, such as wc_product_meta_lookup and wc_product_attributes_lookup.
Customers, reviews, and other store data
Customer identity and address metadata use WordPress’s wp_users and wp_usermeta tables. Product reviews use the WordPress comment tables. WooCommerce also maintains tables for customers and sessions, including wc_customer_lookup and woocommerce_sessions.
Additional store operations have dedicated tables for areas such as shipping, tax, logs, webhooks, API keys, reserved stock, and payment tokens. Their presence is one reason a store’s data cannot be understood by inspecting only its posts and metadata.

Orders and order analytics
With legacy order storage, order records use wp_posts and wp_postmeta. WooCommerce also has tables for order statistics, product lookups, tax lookups, and coupon lookups, including wc_order_stats, wc_order_product_lookup, wc_order_tax_lookup, and wc_order_coupon_lookup. These support order-related operational or analytical uses; they are not interchangeable with the authoritative order store.
What is HPOS in WooCommerce, and which order tables does it use?
HPOS is WooCommerce’s High-Performance Order Storage feature, previously known as Custom Order Tables. It provides dedicated order tables rather than relying on the legacy posts-and-metadata pattern as the authoritative store. WooCommerce says HPOS became stable and the default for new installations starting with WooCommerce 8.2, released in October 2023.
When HPOS is authoritative, its core order data is written to four tables:
_wc_orders_wc_order_addresses_wc_order_operational_data_wc_orders_meta
Table names normally include the WordPress prefix, so these names are shown without a site-specific prefix. The relevant change is not just a different name for the same table: the order data store has changed. When HPOS is authoritative, posts and postmeta act as synchronized backups. During a transition, an existing store can instead have the legacy store as the authoritative source.

What to check before an SQL integration or migration
- Identify the active order data store. Do not infer it from the WooCommerce version or the presence of HPOS tables.
- Check synchronization state. A copy or backup of order data is not necessarily the authoritative location for current reads and writes.
- Use WooCommerce’s CRUD and data-store APIs where possible. They help integrations work with the configured storage model instead of assuming orders always live in posts and postmeta.
- Plan migrations around authority changes. Confirm which store is authoritative before moving or transforming order records, and account for synchronization during the transition.
WooCommerce’s official HPOS documentation describes the feature as a database structure designed for ecommerce needs. The practical implication for developers is to treat order storage as configuration-sensitive: direct SQL tied to one model can fail to see current data or can become unsafe when the store changes its authoritative data store.
How does Magento EAV work?
Magento’s Entity-Attribute-Value model stores attributes separately from an entity’s base record. Instead of expecting every catalog item to have the same fixed set of columns, EAV associates an entity with attribute metadata and typed value tables. Queries must connect those pieces using identifiers such as entity, attribute, and store IDs.

Adobe’s persistence documentation says the Customer, Catalog, and Order resource models use EAV attributes. For a catalog product, the base entity is therefore only part of the picture: the attribute definition and the relevant typed value record are also needed to interpret a value.
What an EAV value record contains
Adobe’s declarative-schema example for catalog_product_entity_datetime shows columns for value_id, attribute_id, store_id, entity_id, and value. The example links the value table to eav_attribute, catalog_product_entity, and store through foreign keys.
This layout explains why a Magento query often requires more than a product ID. It may need the attribute definition to identify the requested field, the product entity to identify the item, and the store identifier to interpret the value’s scope. The value’s type also matters because EAV uses typed tables rather than putting every kind of value in one universal field.
Which kinds of attributes use EAV?
Magento’s catalog attribute documentation includes common attributes such as name, price, sku, status, store_id, tier_price, type_id, visibility, and weight. Custom attributes use the EAV system as well. Extension attributes are different: they can join data from separate tables rather than storing every extension value through EAV.
The flexibility is useful when a catalog has many variable or scoped attributes, but it makes ad hoc queries less direct than reading a fixed column from a single entity table. A query that overlooks attribute or store identifiers can select the wrong value or fail to represent the intended scope.
What are Magento index tables, and why do they matter?
Magento maintains index tables to provide read-oriented structures for areas including price, stock, category-product relationships, and EAV data. Adobe names tables such as catalog_product_index_price, catalog_product_index_eav, catalog_product_index_eav_decimal, and catalog_category_product_index, along with stock index tables.

Index tables change how database inspection should be interpreted. They are derived structures maintained by indexers, not a replacement for understanding the source model and the attribute relationships behind it. Adobe also documents replica tables used for table switching during reindexing. That means a database may contain more than one related index table while an index operation is being handled.
For a query or migration, decide whether you need authoritative source data or a read-optimized indexed representation. Treat indexer maintenance as part of Magento operations: a schema-level change or data move that ignores indexing can leave the read-oriented structures out of step with the data they represent.

WooCommerce is usually easier to approach for teams already comfortable with WordPress tables, but its metadata pattern can make relationships irregular. Magento is more formal for attribute-rich catalogs, but understanding an EAV query requires working with attribute definitions, typed values, entity identifiers, store scope, and indexers.
WooCommerce: familiar tables, storage-model caveats
The WordPress foundation offers recognizable tables and a conventional relational structure. The trade-off is that product details and relationships are spread across posts, postmeta, taxonomy tables, and purpose-built lookup tables. Order queries also depend on whether the store uses legacy posts or HPOS as its authoritative storage.

This makes WooCommerce a practical fit when a team already operates WordPress and the catalog is moderate, especially if the WordPress-plus-custom-table model reduces implementation friction. For direct SQL, the first task is establishing the actual prefix and active order data store; the next is deciding whether a core table, metadata, taxonomy relationship, or lookup table is appropriate for the question.
Magento: structured flexibility, specialist query work
EAV formalizes the handling of variable attributes, which can suit catalogs with many custom or scoped fields and multiple websites or store views. The cost is more query and operational knowledge: a reader must understand the EAV joins, attribute IDs, store scope, indexers, and module-declared schema.

Magento can be a better fit when those catalog requirements justify its architecture and the team can budget for the corresponding maintenance. A simpler catalog does not automatically benefit from the extra complexity; the decision should reflect actual attribute needs and operational skills.
How should you choose between WooCommerce and Magento for a store?
Choose based on the store’s data shape and the team’s ability to operate it, not on an assumed universal database speed advantage.
- Favor WooCommerce when the team already operates WordPress, the catalog is moderate, and the combined WordPress and custom-table model lowers implementation friction.
- Favor Magento when the catalog needs many variable or scoped attributes, multiple websites or store views, and a formal module and indexer architecture.
- Account for existing investment. An established WordPress or Magento operation changes the cost of implementation, integrations, and maintenance.
- Check extension quality. The platform architecture does not guarantee that an extension’s tables, queries, or compatibility will be well suited to the store.
- Test real workloads. A fair performance comparison must hold the catalog, extensions, traffic pattern, database engine, indexes, and caching configuration constant.
The official architectural documentation describes mechanisms, not a cross-platform benchmark. It does not establish that one platform is inherently faster, so a performance verdict should come from a representative test of the actual store rather than from table design alone.
What should you account for when migrating or changing the schema?
WooCommerce and Magento have different migration hazards. WooCommerce migrations must respect which order store is authoritative and whether data is synchronized. Magento migrations must preserve EAV relationships and account for store scope, indexers, and module-declared schema.
WooCommerce migration checks
- Determine whether the source store uses legacy order posts or HPOS as its authority.
- Check synchronization before treating posts and postmeta as a complete or current order source.
- Preserve the site’s actual table prefix and the relationships among product metadata, taxonomies, users, and custom tables.
- Prefer WooCommerce CRUD or data-store APIs for application-level order work instead of hard-coding one storage model.
Magento migration checks
- Preserve the association between entities, attribute definitions, and typed values.
- Account for store identifiers when handling scoped values.
- Include the relevant indexer work when source data changes affect price, stock, category-product, or EAV indexes.
- Respect module-declared schema rather than treating the database as a set of unrelated tables.
For Magento, declarative XML schemas were introduced in the Adobe Commerce/Magento Open Source 2.3 release line. Adobe’s model declares the desired final database state, allowing the application to calculate changes rather than requiring every intermediate upgrade script to be executed in sequence. This is a schema-management approach, not a reason to bypass application-aware upgrade procedures.
For complex changes on either platform, operational experience matters as much as SQL fluency. A migration plan should account for extensions, application data stores, and the structures maintained by the platform—not only the rows visible in a database export.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same SQL query for WooCommerce orders on every store?
No. A query written for legacy orders in wp_posts and wp_postmeta is not a reliable universal order query when a store may use HPOS. An integration should account for the active data store rather than assuming a single table layout.
Why do two Magento products have different EAV values for the same attribute?
Store scope is one reason: an EAV value record includes a store_id, so the relevant value can depend on which store context is being examined. Also check that the attribute ID and typed value table correspond to the attribute you intend to read.
Does Magento declarative schema mean upgrades need no database planning?
No. Declarative schema describes a desired final database state and lets the application calculate changes, but a store still needs application-aware upgrade planning. Modules declare schema too, so customizations and installed modules remain relevant.
