There is no single Witcher chronology shared by every medium. For a first read, use The Last Wish, Sword of Destiny, then the five-novel saga. Play CD PROJEKT RED’s three numbered games in release order, and watch Netflix’s screen continuity from Blood Origin through seasons 1–4 of The Witcher. Those are three adjacent tracks in a larger universe, not one continuous numbered list: the games are set in the universe created by Andrzej Sapkowski, while Netflix publishes a timeline for its own adaptation.

Quick answer: start the books with The Last Wish, not Blood of Elves; play the three numbered games in order; and watch the Netflix prequels before the main series if you want broad in-world order. Optional books, expansions and spin-offs should remain on their own labeled track.

The dependable newcomer route is two short-story collections followed by five novels. Hachette’s catalog separates those introductory collections from the five-book saga, which is why a retailer’s “saga book one” label for Blood of Elves can be misleading as a starting instruction.
First-read order
- The Last Wish. These stories introduce Geralt, the world’s moral tensions and several characters before the central political saga.
- Sword of Destiny. Its stories establish relationships and consequences that the novels assume you understand.
- Blood of Elves. This begins the five-novel saga proper.
- The Time of Contempt.
- Baptism of Fire.
- The Tower of Swallows.
- The Lady of the Lake.
This seven-book route is the clearest answer to “How would you read the Witcher series in chronological order?” when “chronological” means the most coherent first experience rather than a reconstruction of every event date.

Where do the two standalone novels fit?
Season of Storms is an earlier Geralt adventure, explicitly set before Geralt became Ciri’s guardian. It is a standalone novel, not a sequel to the five-book saga. You can read it after the seven-book route to keep the central narrative uninterrupted, or choose it once you want another self-contained Geralt story. The publisher description does not establish an exact gap between particular short stories, so assigning it to a precise slot would overstate the evidence.
Crossroads of Ravens is the young-Geralt prequel. Its publisher describes Geralt just after graduating from Kaer Morhen, and the US paperback page gives an on-sale date of September 29, 2026. It is not an extra volume inserted between Blood of Elves and The Lady of the Lake. Treat it as optional early-life material, not as a replacement for the core reading order.

Broad book-event order (orientation only)
If you want the earliest broad events first, the sensible outline is:
- Crossroads of Ravens (young Geralt).
- Earlier-set Geralt material in The Last Wish.
- Season of Storms somewhere in Geralt’s pre-Ciri period.
- Sword of Destiny.
- Blood of Elves, The Time of Contempt, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of Swallows and The Lady of the Lake.
This is an orientation, not a chapter-by-chapter calendar. The collections contain several stories, and the available publisher descriptions do not give an exact date for every standalone scene. For a first read, follow the seven-book route and add either standalone when your interest points there.

How should I play The Witcher games?
Use the original numbered trilogy in order: The Witcher, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, then The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. CD PROJEKT RED describes these as the original trilogy. Its official wording says the game is “set in the universe created by Andrzej Sapkowski in his series of books”; that does not make every game event part of the novels’ canon.
The numbered route
- The Witcher. This is the first game in the studio’s Geralt series.
- The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. Continue here for the next chapter of the game continuity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This is the third numbered game and the foundation for its two major story expansions.
Where do the expansions go?
Play Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine as expansions to The Witcher 3, not as separate numbered games. They belong on the game-three track and should not be interleaved with the novels.
What about Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales?
Thronebreaker follows Queen Meve amid the Nilfgaardian conflict. It is an optional, separate Meve story rather than “game 1.5.” It can be played after you understand the setting, but there is no verified placement between particular novel chapters.
Is The Witcher 4 part of the released order?
No. At the October 30, 2026 research cut-off, CD PROJEKT RED described The Witcher 4 as a separate new game in development. Do not add it as a released step or infer a launch date from that status.

What is the Netflix Witcher watch order?
For broad in-world order, watch Blood Origin, then Nightmare of the Wolf, then The Witcher seasons 1, 2, 3 and 4. This is Netflix’s adaptation continuity, not a screen version of the games’ timeline.
1. The Witcher: Blood Origin
Netflix presents this 2022 limited series as taking place more than a thousand years before the main show. Its catalog lists four episodes. The interval is a broad setting description, not a precise calendar date that can be reconciled perfectly with every other continuity.

This animated film follows Vesemir in an earlier stage of his witcher life, before the adult-Geralt story of the main series. Watching it after Blood Origin keeps the prequel material together, although it is not required to understand season one.
3. The Witcher seasons 1–4
- Season 1. Watch all episodes in their released order. The season intertwines Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri timelines, so episode number is not a simple in-world date. There is no supported episode shuffle that improves on the official presentation.
- Season 2. Continue directly after season one.
- Season 3. Continue in season order.
- Season 4. Netflix reported on December 10, 2025 that all eight episodes were streaming; the catalog listed four seasons when checked on October 30, 2026.
Netflix has said season five is intended to be the final season. It was a planned conclusion, not a verified fifth released season at the stated cut-off, and no release date should be inferred.

Ancillary Netflix titles
The Rats: A Witcher Tale is described by Netflix as a separate six-outlaw heist story. Keep it as an ancillary title rather than assigning it a made-up season number or story year. A precise first-party chronological placement for Sirens of the Deep was not established in the available material; do not force it into the numbered order without a current Netflix source.
Do the books, games and Netflix series share one canon?
No. They share a setting and recognizable mythology, but they are distinct continuities with different creators and storytelling choices.

Netflix’s official coverage says seasons four and five cover material from Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake. That is a broad adaptation statement, not proof that one season equals one book or that every scene appears in the same order.

What commonly causes Witcher-order confusion?
- Starting with Blood of Elves because it says “saga book one.” That label identifies the novel sequence, not the best introduction to the world.
- Putting Season of Storms after the saga as if it were a sequel. It is an earlier standalone adventure.
- Counting Thronebreaker as a numbered Geralt game. It is Queen Meve’s separate story.
- Assuming the games continue the novels as book-canon events. They are set in the literary universe but follow the game continuity.
- Reordering season-one episodes by character. The interwoven timelines are deliberate; watch the released episode order.
- Assigning exact years to every Netflix spin-off. Current first-party material does not establish precise placements for The Rats or Sirens of the Deep.

Can I read Blood of Elves without the short stories?
You can, but it removes introductions and relationship context that the novel sequence expects. The two collections are short enough that reading The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny first is the more coherent entry.
