To make armor dyes in The Witcher 3, you need the Blood and Wine expansion, a learned color formula, one dye solution, and one of each ingredient listed by that formula. Search formula-bearing containers throughout Toussaint, read the formula when you find it, then craft the dye from the alchemy menu. A finished dye purchased from a merchant can be applied immediately, but buying one does not teach its recipe.
The important correction to many older walkthroughs is that a location identifies a container to inspect, not a guaranteed color. Formula colors can come from a loot pool, so continue through other documented containers if the first chest or skeleton gives you a different recipe.

What must be in place before you hunt for armor dyes?
Armor dye crafting is a Blood and Wine feature tied to Toussaint. The current Complete Edition includes both story expansions, and CD PROJEKT RED says owners of an earlier edition should update their existing game rather than automatically buy it again. If your game does not include Toussaint, dye formulas and the dye merchant will not appear in the base-game regions.

- A formula: the learned recipe that unlocks a color in alchemy.
- Dye solution: a crafting ingredient used with four color-specific items.
- A finished dye: an item that can be applied to eligible witcher gear immediately, but does not unlock repeat crafting.
Having a finished dye in your inventory is therefore not proof that its formula has been learned. This distinction explains the common situation in which a player owns dye but sees no corresponding entry in alchemy. The formula must be obtained and learned separately; the item itself is not a passive unlock.
Dyes are cosmetic rather than statistical upgrades. They recolor individual witcher-gear pieces, so you can create a mixed set instead of changing every equipped item at once. Armor rating, resistances, set bonuses, and other displayed statistics are unchanged. Keep that in mind before spending rare ingredients: crafting is worthwhile for appearance and collection goals, not for combat power.
What are all 12 Witcher 3 armor-dye recipes?
Each formula requires exactly one dye solution and one of each other item in its row. Keep the in-game spellings when searching merchants, loot, or your own inventory; these are game items, not real-world substitutes.

An older location article spells the orange ingredient as “Moleyarrow.” The remastered item database and newer consolidated listings use Lemmingbrush, which is the spelling to follow for the current recipe checklist. Do not add both names to your shopping list: they refer to the spelling discrepancy, not two separate ingredients.
Several formulas reuse an alchemical substance, but that does not make recipes interchangeable. For example, Vitriol appears in blue and turquoise, while Rubedo appears in pink and red; each color still needs its own remaining ingredients. Once a formula is learned, its alchemy panel is the authoritative checklist for that save.
How do you find dye formulas in Toussaint?
Search containers rather than chasing a supposedly guaranteed color. Activate Witcher senses and inspect skeletons, chests, sacks, dressers, lockboxes, and other searchable objects. A formula may be inside a dangerous area or a quest location, so clear enemies or advance the related quest when necessary. The sites below are documented leads; the color associated with each can vary.

- Bastoy Prison Ruins: inspect the skeleton or treasure container within the ruins.
- Lynx Crag area: search the skeleton at the monster-den entrance northwest of Fox Hollow.
North Toussaint
- Chuchote Cave camp: check the container at the camp south of Castel Ravello.
- Witch’s hut: search the dresser in the hut connected with A Knight’s Tales.
- Fort Ussar: inspect the chest in the small room.
Northeast and east Toussaint
- Road north of Dun Tynne Crossroads: search the overturned wagon.
- Cave camp east of the crossroads: check the box beside the bed.
- Arthach: inspect the container behind the white tent in the northeastern corner.
Mont Crane
- Basement alchemy-table area: get past the illusion and enemies, then search the area behind the illusion.
- Uppermost level: look beneath the wooden roof for the box on a table.
Mont Crane can require combat and illusion-related progress before both containers are accessible. Treat it as a higher-risk stop rather than a quick early-game detour. If you are following a route for efficiency, visit the safer roadside and camp containers first, then return after you can handle the castle area.

Quest-linked and city containers
- Tufo Vineyard: inspect the locked cellar during the related contract.
- Beauclair cemetery: search the skeleton in the crypt corridor west of Metinna Gate.
Use a systematic route: mark a location, search every listed container, record which formulas you have learned, and move to the next site. A container can also hold ordinary loot or a formula you already know. If it contains a duplicate or an unexpected color, that is consistent with the pool-based distribution; it is not evidence that the container is empty or that your game is broken.
For each stop, approach with Witcher senses active and sweep the entire room or camp instead of checking only the object named in a short guide. Dressers, sacks, and boxes can be easy to overlook when enemies, quest markers, or lighting draw your attention elsewhere. Save the formula item in your inventory until you have a safe moment to read it, then verify the color appears in alchemy before leaving.
Why does a location guide show a different color from the one you found?
Older guides often print a fixed color beside each site, while newer location references describe formulas as draws from a shared loot pool. The container location remains useful, but the color assignment is not dependable enough to promise a black dye at Bastoy, a blue dye at Chuchote, or a white dye on Mont Crane’s upper level.

Do not reload repeatedly expecting a published color to appear at one chest unless you are deliberately experimenting with your own save. No dependable drop-rate or per-container probability has been established. The practical solution is to search additional documented containers until the formula you need appears, then learn it before leaving the area. This also prevents a common mistake: assuming that an unlearned color is unavailable simply because one well-known chest produced another formula.
Where can you get dye solution and the other ingredients?
Dye solution appears in the inventories of several Toussaint merchant types, including alchemists, herbalists, tailors, and craftsmen. Regional loot can also supply it. Inventory refreshes and stock differ, so no single merchant should be expected to carry every ingredient or every color component.
After learning a formula, open the alchemy menu and use its ingredient display as your shopping list. The recipes combine ordinary plants and berries with alchemical substances such as Nigredo, Rubedo, Vitriol, Aether, Rebis, Hydragenum, Albedo, Sulfur, Phosphorus, and Vermilion. Looting plants while traveling through Toussaint can reduce later shopping, but the formula screen is the authority for what your current color actually lacks.
Plan purchases around the exact row rather than buying ingredients because their names sound similar. “Green mold,” “Crow’s eye,” and “Lemmingbrush,” for example, refer to in-game items with their own inventory entries. A merchant who carries dye solution may not carry the herbs in the same recipe, and a regional herb seller should not be assumed to stock every alchemical substance. Check several merchant types and use regional loot for the gaps.

There is no universal current price or guaranteed all-in-one shopping list established for every merchant. Stock can differ from one published example to another, so compare the inventory in your own save instead of budgeting around an old price claim.
Should you buy a finished dye or craft the formula?
Buy a finished dye when you want a color on a piece immediately. Learn the formula and gather ingredients when you expect to recolor several pieces or want a renewable supply. These are different goals: the merchant shortcut saves search and gathering time, while a learned formula provides repeatability. Even with a formula, each craft consumes one dye solution and all four listed components, so repeatability still requires continued material gathering.
A Toussaint dye merchant is documented as stocking several finished colors, including gray, turquoise, brown, green, blue, orange, pink, and yellow. Published stock descriptions differ, so do not assume that every merchant always carries every color, particularly black, red, purple, or white. Check the merchant’s current inventory in your game. A bought finished dye is ready for application but remains separate from the formula system.
Dye remover is a separate item. Use it when you want to restore a gear piece’s original appearance; it is not an ingredient for making a new color. Removing a dye does not turn that item back into a formula or replenish the materials used to craft the original dye.

Once the formula is learned and all five required items are available, crafting is straightforward. Follow this order to avoid confusing a finished dye with a recipe.
- Confirm the expansion: enter Toussaint or verify that Blood and Wine is installed and active.
- Learn the formula: open the formula item from your inventory or otherwise use it so the color becomes available to alchemy. Merely possessing a finished dye does not perform this step.
- Check the alchemy entry: open the alchemy menu and locate the color. The ingredient panel shows one dye solution plus four color-specific components.
- Gather or purchase materials: use Toussaint merchants and regional loot, then return to alchemy when every item is present.
- Craft the dye: select the formula and confirm production. The finished dye moves to your inventory.
- Apply it to gear: select an eligible witcher-gear piece in the inventory and choose the dye application option, then select the color you crafted or bought.
- Undo the appearance if needed: use dye remover on the piece to restore its original look.
Dye changes appearance only; it does not increase armor rating, resistances, set bonuses, or other statistics. It is a visual customization system for individual witcher-gear pieces, not an upgrade path.
What should you do if you have dye but no recipe in alchemy?
This resolves the wording behind the common player question, “I check my alchemy, there are no dyes, yet I already have them.” The missing object is usually the learned formula, not the finished item. If the formula was just read and still does not appear, leave and reopen the alchemy interface, confirm the expansion is active, and make sure you did not read a different color’s formula by mistake.

CD PROJEKT RED’s September 28, 2026 remastered update notes state: “Dyes from Blood and Wine applied to equipment will carry over to the reforged item.” That confirms persistence for a dye that has already been applied when the gear is reforged. It does not replace the formula-and-ingredient system described above, and it does not mean an unlearned recipe is carried into alchemy. The statement concerns an applied dye on equipment, not an unused finished dye in storage.

Check ownership and platform before spending money. The current Complete Edition includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, while CD PROJEKT RED directs existing owners to update their game for the expansion. The September 2026 notes also describe a free upgrade path for some previous purchases within the same platform ecosystem. Those statements make “buy the game again” an unsafe blanket recommendation.
For a new buyer, publisher-confirmed physical releases include boxed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X editions and a Nintendo Switch game card. Match the edition to your platform and verify the listing’s contents. Existing owners should first check their library, installed add-ons, and update status. A physical Complete Edition is a practical option for a new, platform-matched buyer, not a reason for an existing owner to repurchase the game.

A short preparation routine prevents wasted travel and duplicate shopping:
- Finish or unlock enough Toussaint access to reach the relevant containers safely.
- Carry space for loot and keep a written or mental list of colors already learned.

- Search containers with Witcher senses and inspect every searchable object, not only the chest named in an old guide.
- Learn each formula as soon as you obtain it, then check alchemy before moving on.
- Use the exact ingredient names in the recipe table when comparing your inventory.
- Buy a finished dye only when immediate appearance customization is more valuable than repeatable crafting.
This approach treats locations as a reliable search network while respecting the randomized color assignment. It also avoids spending time hunting a guaranteed color that the available location evidence does not establish. For a completionist run, keep a twelve-color checklist and mark a color only after its formula appears in alchemy, not merely after you find or buy a finished dye.

Can one learned formula make unlimited dyes?
The formula gives you a repeatable alchemy recipe, but every craft still consumes one dye solution and the four listed ingredients. Keep gathering those materials if you plan to recolor several pieces.
Why does a merchant have a different dye selection from an online list?
Merchant inventories and published stock descriptions are not uniform. Treat lists as examples of colors that may be offered, then rely on the inventory shown by the Toussaint dye merchant in your own save.

Are the recipe ingredients interchangeable between colors?
