Start with Hollow Knight if you want the closest proven match, then choose TUNIC for Zelda-like secrets or Ori and the Will of the Wisps for lush scenery and gentler movement. One important correction: Winds of Viridia is currently listed for Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam, not the original Nintendo Switch. Shark Jump revealed it at Nintendo Indie World on 28 October 2026, with a Q1 2027 release window and no announced price. A free demo is available now on Steam and the Switch 2 eShop, so Switch 2 owners can sample the target game immediately while everyone else can use the games below to cover its exploration, boss fights, secrets, soundtrack and art influences.
The ranked list separates genuine indie matches from adjacent first-party or newly launched options. It also flags where a recommendation fits only one part of the Winds of Viridia appeal rather than the whole package.

What is Winds of Viridia, and when can you play it?
Winds of Viridia is Shark Jump’s handcrafted, single-player open-world action adventure, developed with Matt Trobbiani. The studio is based in Australia, and Console Creatures describes this as its debut. Nintendo’s 28 October 2026 Indie World presentation introduced a child awakened from a seed who sets out to restore balance to the civilization of Viridia.
The Steam listing gives the planned release window as Q1 2027, meaning January through March 2027; neither Steam nor the announcement supplies a calendar day. No price has been announced. Every current platform listing names Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam. There is no sourced listing for the original Switch, so an original-Switch owner should not assume the game will run on that hardware.

What kind of game is Winds of Viridia?
Steam describes exploration around the towering Grantree valley, frenzied creatures, lost relics, totems, a Mothbug companion and gigantic bosses. Traversal includes rolling, sliding, flipping and grappling, with strange plants that increase jump height or launch distance. The world is presented as seamless, moving between mountain glades, hidden grottos and ancient ruins while the player helps residents of Sanctuary and joins them for a meal.

Larkin composed Hollow Knight, while Penkin is known for Made in Abyss; that shared musical lineage is why the Hollow Knight games rank so highly here.
Press descriptions add useful but separate context. ActuGaming says the influence of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is immediately apparent. Console Creatures compares the exploration with Breath of the Wild, the boss scale with Monster Hunter and the art with Studio Ghibli. IGN calls it a soulslike action adventure. Those are critics’ descriptors, not Steam’s official genre line. ActuGaming also mentions base-building between expeditions, but that system is not listed among Steam’s features and should be treated as unconfirmed.
1. Hollow Knight is the closest overall match
Hollow Knight is the best first stop because it shares Christopher Larkin’s music while delivering interconnected exploration, hidden routes, relics and memorable bosses. Its hand-drawn insect kingdom is 2D rather than the 3D Grantree valley, but the feeling of gradually understanding a dangerous world is unusually close.
Team Cherry released it in 2017. It is available on the original Switch and received a Switch 2 Edition on 5 February 2026, in addition to PC and other consoles. Oruvai’s 23 October 2026 snapshot recorded 97% positive English Steam reviews from about 186,000 reviews and a US Steam price of US$14.99. Those figures are platform snapshots, not a new performance test.
The game is generally the gentler of Team Cherry’s two releases. Expect deliberate positioning, map management and boss learning rather than open-world climbing or grappling. Choose it when the soundtrack, secrets and guardian fights in the trailer matter more than a fully 3D setting.
2. Hollow Knight: Silksong raises the boss and difficulty ceiling
Silksong keeps Larkin’s orchestral identity but makes movement and combat more demanding. Hornet’s faster kit, vertical routes and aggressive bosses suit readers who interpreted the trailer as a high-pressure action game rather than a relaxed nature adventure.

Team Cherry launched it on 4 September 2025 for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox, Switch and Switch 2. Oruvai’s 23 October 2026 snapshot recorded 93% positive English Steam reviews from about 147,000 reviews and a US Steam price of US$19.99. Don Porque reported a 94 Metacritic score in a 2026 roundup, while another listing showed 91; that discrepancy is unresolved, so neither number should be treated as a definitive current Metacritic result.
A free Sea of Sorrow expansion was promised for 2026, but no Steam date had been posted by 23 October. Buy or play Silksong for demanding 2D bosses and more of Larkin’s sound, not because its map structure resembles a seamless 3D wilderness.
3. TUNIC is the strongest Zelda-like secrets substitute
TUNIC translates the classic Zelda-style discovery loop into an isometric world starring a small fox. Its in-game manual is scattered across the map, and every recovered page can reveal a route, technique or rule that was previously hidden. Dodges, blocks and parries add a soulslike edge without turning every encounter into a pure reaction test.
The structure is compact and secret-rich rather than expansive and seamless. That makes it the best choice for readers drawn to the “Zelda” part of the Winds of Viridia comparisons: deciphering clues, finding shortcuts and realizing that an apparently decorative object matters. It is on Switch; the supplied listings do not establish a current price.
4. Ori and the Will of the Wisps offers the easier nature adventure
Ori and the Will of the Wisps is the closest art-and-mood alternative to the Ghibli-coded wilderness described by Console Creatures. Its forest is lush, luminous and emotionally direct, while the movement system rewards flowing jumps and dashes instead of punishing every mistake.
Moon Studios’ 2020 game is on Switch, PC and Xbox, but not PlayStation. Oruvai recorded 96% positive Steam reviews on 23 October 2026; Don Porque listed a Metacritic score of 90. It is more forgiving than the Team Cherry games and therefore the better recommendation for players who want traversal, scenery and a clear route through a beautiful world before tackling harder bosses.

Animal Well is a dense interconnected labyrinth in which items, environmental interactions and layered puzzles matter more than conventional fighting. It shares Winds of Viridia’s interest in hidden spaces and unusual discoveries, but not its grand-beast combat or open 3D scale.
It is available on Switch and other platforms. Oruvai’s 23 October 2026 Steam snapshot showed 95% positive reviews; Don Porque listed a Metacritic score of 90. Choose it when the trailer’s grottos, relics and environmental mysteries appeal more than its sword-and-boss imagery.

6. Nine Sols is the pick for precise boss pressure
Nine Sols uses Sekiro-inspired deflections in a 2D eastern-fantasy setting. Its combat asks for deliberate parries and timing, making it the closest recommendation here to the demanding boss pressure associated with Silksong and the “soulslike” label attached to Winds of Viridia by IGN.
The game is on Switch and other platforms. Oruvai recorded 95% positive Steam reviews on 23 October 2026, while Don Porque listed a Metacritic score of 86. It is a poor fit if you want a low-stress nature stroll, but an excellent fit if the trailer’s large guardians made you want to practice patterns and deflections.

Sword of the Sea arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on 29 October 2026 from Giant Squid, the studio behind Journey, Abzû and The Pathless. It is a contemplative traversal game across sand and sea, making it a natural same-week palate cleanser for the mysterious landscapes in Winds of Viridia.
This is not a substitute for grand-beast fights, totem builds or agile combat. Its value is mood and movement: Switch 2 owners can experience a new, quiet landscape immediately, then return to the Winds of Viridia demo when they want battles and exploration systems.
8. Blasphemous 2 brings gothic exploration and hard fights
Blasphemous 2 is a gothic metroidvania with a harsher visual palette and punishing combat. The Mea Culpa expansion arrived in October 2024. It shares the emphasis on interconnected discovery and bosses, but its religious-gothic tone is far from Viridia’s bright wilderness.
It is available on Switch and other platforms. Don Porque listed a Metacritic score of 85. Select it when difficulty and grim atmosphere matter more than friendly companions or natural scenery.
9. ENDER MAGNOLIA gives you atmosphere with adjustable difficulty
ENDER MAGNOLIA: Bloom in the Mist is a melancholy 2D metroidvania with difficulty options. Its exploration and mood can fill the gap between a short demo and a long 2027 wait, while the adjustable challenge makes it easier to tailor than the hardest entries on this list.
It is on Switch and other platforms. Oruvai’s 23 October 2026 Steam snapshot showed 97% positive reviews, and Don Porque listed a Metacritic score of 85. The connection to Winds of Viridia is strongest in atmosphere and map discovery, not in 3D traversal.

10. Celeste trains movement precision
Celeste contains more than 700 platforming screens and turns a small set of moves into a rigorous movement curriculum. It has no open-world combat or monster-hunting loop, but it is ideal preparation for readers attracted to rolling, sliding, flipping and grappling.
It is available on Switch and other platforms. Oruvai recorded 97% positive Steam reviews on 23 October 2026. A Celeste co-creator’s City of None was also shown for 2027, but that unreleased project is not a waiting-game recommendation; Celeste is the playable-now choice.

Mina the Hollower combines a top-down view with tunnels and a Zeldvania-style progression. It is a better structural match for readers who want dungeons, keys and overworld secrets than for anyone seeking a seamless wilderness.
Don Porque lists it on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch with a Metacritic score of 85. Its pixel-art labyrinths provide a deliberate contrast to Winds of Viridia’s naturalistic 3D presentation.
12. Dead Cells covers combat, not handcrafted exploration
Dead Cells is a rogue-lite built around repeated runs, weapon combinations and fast combat. It belongs on the extended list because it can satisfy the desire for agile fights, but procedural runs make it a weaker match for a handcrafted valley with persistent secrets.
It is on Switch and other platforms. Don Porque lists a Metacritic score of 91. Choose it for replayable combat sessions, not as a direct substitute for Winds of Viridia’s story-driven world.

What can original Switch owners play while they wait?
Original Switch owners cannot currently play the Winds of Viridia demo because the official listings are for Switch 2 and Steam. A practical four-game route is Hollow Knight for Larkin’s music and exploration, TUNIC for Zelda-like secrets, Ori and the Will of the Wisps for nature and movement, then either Nine Sols for boss pressure or Animal Well for layered puzzles.
This route covers the announced game’s major public-facing ingredients without pretending that a 2D metroidvania reproduces its 3D traversal. A physical Hollow Knight Nintendo Switch cartridge is also the most straightforward shelf-ready option for readers who prefer a cartridge; no physical Winds of Viridia edition has been announced.

How the list was chosen
The ranking uses the specific elements publicly attached to Winds of Viridia: exploration structure, combat style, art and mood, soundtrack lineage, platform availability and difficulty. Games were included only when the supplied listings place them on Switch or Switch 2 already, or make them immediate launch-period options. A recommendation can therefore be a close match on one axis without being presented as an equivalent to the complete 3D game.
