To set up a SOCKS5 proxy in Windows, first enter the proxy host and port at Settings > Network & internet > Proxy, then configure SOCKS5 separately in applications that do not honor the Windows setting. Windows 10 and Windows 11 provide a manual proxy entry, but that entry does not force every program to use SOCKS5. Microsoft’s WinHTTP tools do not support SOCKS5 at all. For reliable results, test the application you actually need to proxy; use Edge’s SOCKS5 configuration for browser traffic, curl’s socks5 or socks5h scheme for command-line tests, and netsh winhttp only to inspect or reset WinHTTP.
What information do you need before configuring SOCKS5?
Obtain the endpoint details from the proxy operator before opening Windows settings. A missing or incorrect value usually produces a timeout that looks like a Windows failure.

- Hostname or IP address: for example,
proxy.exampleor an IPv4 address. - Port: use the port supplied by the operator. Port 1080 is the conventional default when a SOCKS5 URL does not specify another port, but an operator may use any available port.
- Credentials: keep the username and password available if the endpoint requires authentication. Whether credentials can be entered in a particular program depends on that program’s proxy implementation.
- Bypass requirements: determine whether local intranet names, internal IP ranges, or other destinations must connect directly.
Do not assume that a SOCKS5 address is interchangeable with an HTTP proxy address. The host and port can look identical, while the protocol handshake is different.
How do you enter a proxy address in Windows 10 or 11?
Windows exposes the manual proxy controls in the same location on current Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases. The page asks for a server address and port, but it does not make every application a SOCKS5 client.

- Open Settings.
- Select Network & internet, then open Proxy.
- Under Manual proxy setup, select Set up next to Use a proxy server.
- Turn on Use a proxy server.
- Enter the proxy hostname or IP address in the address field.
- Enter the supplied port. If your application’s SOCKS5 syntax allows the port to be omitted, it may assume 1080; Windows’ manual form still requires you to enter the port.
- Add any destinations that must bypass the proxy. Microsoft recommends bypassing local intranet addresses unless your organization specifically requires those addresses to use the proxy.
- Select Save.
This creates a Windows proxy setting. It is not proof that a browser, desktop client, service, or game is now using SOCKS5. Some programs read Windows settings, some use WinHTTP, and others ignore both and require their own proxy configuration.
Does the Windows proxy setting make every application use SOCKS5?
No. Application coverage is the main limitation of a Windows-level entry. A successful save only confirms that Windows stored the address and port; the application must support the relevant Windows proxy interface and SOCKS5 protocol.

The practical consequence is simple: use the Windows page as a broad setting only when you know the application reads it, and use an application-specific SOCKS5 setting when you need certainty.
How do you configure SOCKS5 for Microsoft Edge?
Edge documents SOCKSv5 proxy URI forms such as socks5://proxy.example:8080. If no port is included in the URI, Edge uses 1080. Configure the URI through the Edge proxy mechanism available on your device, rather than assuming that the Windows manual entry will supply SOCKS5 behavior.
Use the correct URI
Replace the example host and port with the values supplied by your operator:
socks5://proxy.example:1080explicitly selects SOCKS5 on port 1080.socks5://proxy.example:8080selects SOCKS5 on port 8080.socks5://proxy.examplerelies on Edge’s documented default of port 1080.
Do not write http:// when the endpoint is SOCKS5. The scheme tells Edge which proxy protocol to use.
Know what Edge can and cannot proxy
Edge performs hostname resolution on the proxy side for its SOCKSv5 path. That can prevent the local DNS resolver from seeing the destination name, but it does not make every Windows network operation use the proxy.

Microsoft’s Edge documentation limits SOCKSv5 to TCP-based URL requests. It cannot relay UDP through SOCKSv5, so an application or feature that depends on UDP is outside this path even when ordinary web pages load successfully.
How do you test SOCKS5 with curl?
curl lets you choose where the destination hostname is resolved. This makes it useful both as a connectivity test and as a way to diagnose DNS-related failures.
Test with proxy-side DNS resolution
Use socks5h when the proxy should resolve the destination hostname:
curl --proxy socks5h://proxy.example:1080 https://example.com
The h indicates that hostname resolution is handled through the proxy. This is the appropriate choice when local DNS is unavailable, returns a different answer, or should not receive the destination name.
Test with local DNS resolution
Use --socks5 when curl should resolve the hostname locally and then connect through SOCKS5:
curl --socks5 proxy.example:1080 https://example.com

curl documents socks5:// and socks5h:// as supported schemes and defaults an omitted port to 1080. If the endpoint requires credentials, supply them using the authentication mechanism supported by your curl build and the proxy operator; a successful TCP connection alone does not prove that authentication is configured correctly for another application.
Interpret the result correctly
A response from curl proves that this curl process reached the destination through the selected SOCKS5 option. It does not prove that Edge, a desktop application, a service, or a game uses the same route. Repeat the test in the application that matters to you.
What is WinHTTP’s role, and why can’t it configure SOCKS5?
WinHTTP is a separate Windows networking stack used by some services and programs. Microsoft’s Netsh command reference explicitly says that SOCKS5 is not supported by the advanced WinHTTP proxy commands.
Inspect the current WinHTTP proxy
Open an elevated Command Prompt or another shell with administrative rights and run:

netsh winhttp show proxy
The output reports the proxy configured for WinHTTP, which may differ from the setting shown in the Windows Settings app. That difference is expected because they are separate configuration scopes.
Set a basic WinHTTP proxy
The documented command is intended for a basic HTTP/HTTPS WinHTTP proxy:
netsh winhttp set proxy server:port
Do not use this command as a SOCKS5 switch. Microsoft states that set advproxy and show advproxy do not support SOCKS5.

Reset WinHTTP to direct access
To remove a stale WinHTTP proxy and return WinHTTP to direct access, run:

This reset affects WinHTTP only. It does not erase an entry in Settings > Network & internet > Proxy, and it does not reconfigure application-specific proxy settings.
How should you verify that SOCKS5 is actually working?
Verification must happen at the same layer as the traffic you want to proxy. Start with the target application, then inspect WinHTTP separately if a service is involved.
- Record the endpoint: confirm the host, port, and any required credentials with the operator.
- Run an explicit curl test: use
socks5hfor proxy-side DNS orsocks5for local DNS. - Test the target application: open a destination that normally works without the proxy and check whether the application can still connect.
- Check the application’s own proxy status: if it provides a diagnostics page or connection log, use that rather than inferring behavior from Windows Settings.
- Inspect WinHTTP when relevant: run
netsh winhttp show proxy. A direct WinHTTP result does not describe Edge or curl. - Compare bypass behavior: test one destination listed in the bypass field and one that is not. A bypassed destination may connect directly by design.
Successful page loading is not enough to establish UDP support. Edge’s SOCKSv5 implementation is limited to TCP-based URL requests, and a separate UDP-dependent feature can fail even while HTTPS browsing works.

The usual reason is that the application does not read the Windows proxy scope, does not implement SOCKS5 through that scope, or has its own proxy setting that takes precedence.
The app has its own proxy page
Configure SOCKS5 in that page using the application’s documented host, port, and protocol fields. If it accepts a URI, specify the socks5:// scheme instead of relying on a generic server field.
The app uses WinHTTP
Check the result of netsh winhttp show proxy. If the program requires SOCKS5, WinHTTP is the wrong configuration path because Microsoft does not support SOCKS5 there. Look for an application-level proxy option or a supported intermediary that the program can use.

A bypass rule is matching
Review the bypass list in Settings > Network & internet > Proxy. A matching local name, address, or pattern can intentionally send traffic directly. Remove the exception temporarily for testing, then restore the organization’s required intranet exclusions.
The endpoint or credentials are wrong
Recheck spelling, port, username, and password. Test the same values with curl so that you separate endpoint failure from an application’s proxy implementation.
What should you do when SOCKS5 connects but the destination still fails?
Separate the failure into transport, name resolution, protocol, and application scope. Each symptom points to a different fix.
- Immediate connection refusal or timeout: verify the host and port, confirm that the proxy operator allows your source address, and check whether a firewall blocks the endpoint.
- curl works with
socks5hbut notsocks5: local DNS resolution is likely the problem. Keep proxy-side resolution withsocks5hfor that use case. - curl works but Edge does not: configure Edge explicitly with its SOCKS5 URI. The Windows entry alone is not evidence that Edge selected SOCKS5.
- Edge loads pages but a UDP feature fails: this is consistent with Edge’s documented TCP-only SOCKSv5 path; use a transport supported by that feature instead of treating it as a DNS or port error.
- Only some destinations bypass the proxy: inspect bypass entries and test again with a destination that does not match an exception.
- A background service behaves differently from your browser: inspect its WinHTTP or application-specific configuration. User-interface proxy settings and service networking are not interchangeable.
- Behavior remains after changing Settings: run
netsh winhttp show proxyand remove stale WinHTTP values withnetsh winhttp reset proxywhen the affected program uses WinHTTP.
Which setup should you choose?
Choose the narrowest configuration that covers the traffic you actually need. This avoids assuming that one setting controls the entire computer.

How do you return to a direct connection safely?
Undo only the configuration layer you changed. In Windows Settings, return to Settings > Network & internet > Proxy, open Set up under Use a proxy server, and turn the setting off. For WinHTTP, run netsh winhttp reset proxy. Finally, remove or disable any application-specific SOCKS5 setting; otherwise that application can continue using the proxy after the Windows entry is gone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does netsh winhttp show proxy disagree with the Windows Proxy page?
They report different configuration stores. The Settings page controls the Windows user-facing proxy preference, while netsh winhttp reports the WinHTTP scope used by particular services and programs. A mismatch is not automatically an error; identify which stack the affected application uses.
Is port 1080 required for every SOCKS5 proxy?
No. 1080 is the documented default used by Edge and curl when their SOCKS5 URI or option omits a port. The proxy operator can expose SOCKS5 on another port, which you must enter explicitly.
Can I use a SOCKS5 endpoint without changing Windows settings?
Yes. An application such as curl or Edge can be configured with its own SOCKS5 URI or command-line option. This is often preferable when only one program should use the proxy and other traffic must remain direct.
What should I save before troubleshooting a proxy change?
Record the original Windows proxy state, the WinHTTP output, the bypass entries, and each application’s proxy value. That record lets you restore the previous routing scope instead of guessing which layer was changed.
