For most people using an up-to-date Windows 11 PC at home, Windows Security with Microsoft Defender is a sound baseline; a paid antivirus subscription is optional, not an automatic security upgrade. Independent testing found Defender performed strongly in 2026 lab tests. Paying can make sense when you need extras such as family controls, support, backup, or management across several devices—or when a tested product suits your hardware and habits better.
Is Windows Defender enough for a Windows 11 home PC?
Often, yes. If your PC runs a current Windows installation, updates are enabled, and your main need is baseline malware protection, Microsoft Defender can be a reasonable choice without an additional antivirus subscription. Microsoft says Defender continually monitors for malware, viruses, and security threats; it uses real-time, behavior-based, heuristic, and cloud-delivered protection. Blocking potentially unwanted applications is also available as an option.

“Enough” is not a guarantee that every threat will be stopped, nor does it mean every user has the same needs. It means the built-in protection is a credible starting point for many home users, and the available independent test results do not support paying simply because a product is more expensive or has a longer feature list.
Windows also includes Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, according to the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). That is separate from the antivirus engine, but part of the built-in security picture. The NCSC says built-in antivirus products in Windows, macOS, and Android meet the needs of many organisations, while noting that commercial products may also be worth considering.

A useful way to answer “Do I need antivirus if I have Windows Security?” is to separate the need for an antivirus engine from the need for a larger security service. If what you want is baseline malware monitoring on one maintained Windows PC, Defender may cover that need. If you want someone to manage a household’s devices, provide support, or bundle other services, you are comparing broader plans—not simply deciding whether the built-in product counts as antivirus.
What does Windows Security include?
Windows Security is the Windows interface for security settings and status; Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the built-in antivirus component. Defender is not merely a manual file scanner: Microsoft documents ongoing monitoring and several protection methods.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Real-time protection: monitors for threats as you use the PC.
- Behavior-based and heuristic protection: uses suspicious behavior and characteristics to identify threats, rather than relying only on a known-file match.
- Cloud-delivered protection: connects protection to Microsoft’s cloud service.
- Potentially unwanted application blocking: an optional protection against certain unwanted applications.
- SmartScreen: Windows also includes Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, as identified by the NCSC.
These capabilities are evidence of a built-in security layer, not a promise that every setting is enabled on every computer or that antivirus replaces safe account practices, software updates, or backups. Check Windows Security for the protection status on your own PC rather than assuming a device is covered because the app is present.
That check matters particularly when a PC has had another antivirus app installed or removed. Microsoft says Defender turns off automatically when another antivirus app is installed and turns back on when that app is removed. The presence of Windows Security alone does not tell you which real-time antivirus product is currently active, so review the displayed status after a change.
What do independent antivirus tests say about Defender?
Recent laboratory results show that Defender can compete with consumer security products in defined tests. The scores are useful comparisons under test conditions, not predictions that a particular home PC will block every future attack.
AV-TEST: July–August 2026
AV-TEST’s Windows 11 home-user results for Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) version 4.18 give it 17.5 out of 18: 6/6 for protection, 5.5/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability. AV-TEST awards up to six points in each category and sets 17.5 points as the threshold for its Top Product award, so Defender reached that threshold in this test cycle.

The category breakdown is more useful than the total by itself. Protection measures one part of the comparison; the separate performance and usability scores remind readers that a product is also judged on how it affects use and how manageable it is. Defender’s 5.5/6 performance score is not a promise about how it will feel on your particular hardware, but it is a reason not to assume that built-in means untested or inherently slow.
AV-TEST: January–February 2026
In a separate Defender report, AV-TEST recorded 99.7% and 100% results in its two protection categories and a 6.0/6.0 protection score. Those percentages belong to the specified lab test period and categories; they should not be read as a guarantee of equivalent protection against all threats in the wild.

AV-Comparatives: broader product testing
AV-Comparatives’ 2025 summary covered 19 consumer Windows security products and said all reached an acceptable overall level. Its February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test used 400 cases on Microsoft Windows, with cloud connectivity, daily updates, and false-alarm testing. These results can help narrow a comparison, but the conditions matter: a lab’s test setup is not identical to each reader’s PC, network, software, or behavior.
The 400-case figure describes the test’s scale, not a count of every kind of threat a person might encounter. Likewise, a result from a particular edition and test window is not a lifetime ranking. If you compare products over time, check that the operating system, edition, test dates, and test categories are relevant to the versions you are considering.
When reading any lab result, look at the test date, operating system, product edition, categories measured, and whether false alarms or performance were considered. A single protection score does not answer whether the product slows your particular computer, works well with your applications, or includes the services you want.
Is paid antivirus better than Microsoft Defender?
Not automatically. AV-Comparatives cautions readers against assuming that a more sophisticated or expensive product necessarily provides better protection than a simpler or cheaper one. Consumer security products generally share core protection components; premium editions commonly add features, support, and sometimes a more sophisticated interface.
That distinction matters because a suite can be worth paying for without its antivirus engine being inherently better for every user. You may be buying convenience or services around the protection engine—such as managing several devices, family controls, backup, a VPN, identity monitoring, device tracking, scam protection, or direct support. Whether those additions justify a recurring subscription depends on whether you will use them and what the subscription costs at renewal.
Conversely, if you only need baseline malware protection on one maintained Windows PC, extra features can add cost and configuration without solving a problem you have. Compare what the paid plan actually includes rather than treating “premium” as a protection rating.

If the extras duplicate services you already use, the bundle may be less useful than its feature count suggests.
When should you stick with Windows Security?
Windows Security is a sensible default when your needs are straightforward and you are willing to keep the system maintained. You can generally stay with Defender if the following describe your situation:

- ONGOING PROTECTION Download instantly & install protection for 5 PCs, Macs, iOS or Android devices in minutes!

- You use a current Windows installation and keep Windows and applications updated.
- You want baseline malware and web-threat protection without another subscription.
- You mainly use one PC, or do not need a central dashboard to manage protection across devices.
- You do not need paid-suite extras such as parental controls, bundled backup, identity monitoring, or direct vendor support.
- You are comfortable checking Windows Security for protection status and responding to alerts.
This is a choice about fit, not a claim that every Windows setup is configured perfectly. If protection is off, updates are neglected, or you need services that Windows Security does not provide as part of the antivirus itself, reassess the setup rather than relying on the general recommendation.
A simple decision check is to name the protection or service you are missing before shopping. If the answer is only “I heard the free one is not enough,” the lab results and AV-Comparatives’ caution give you a reason to compare evidence rather than buy on that assumption. If you can name a concrete need—such as managing devices for other people or having direct support—you can evaluate plans against that need.

When is a paid antivirus suite worth considering?
Consider paying when a specific included feature or support arrangement solves a real need. The key question is not “Does this suite have more features?” but “Will I use the features, and are they included in the plan I intend to keep?”
You manage several devices
A multi-device license or central management can simplify oversight for a household or small group. Check the actual device limit and supported platforms for the plan; do not assume a Windows subscription covers every phone or computer you own.
Before choosing a multi-device plan, count the devices and identify their platforms. Then check whether the plan covers that mix, how many devices the license allows, and whether management is centralized or requires separate setup. A product family may offer several editions, and the name of the suite alone does not establish which devices or features your selected plan covers.
You need family or administrative controls
Parental controls or centralized administration may be valuable when another person needs to manage settings or review protection across devices. Verify which controls are included, what devices they support, and whether they match the level of oversight you need.
You want bundled services
Backup, VPN access, device tracking, identity monitoring, or scam protection can make a suite useful beyond antivirus. Compare the precise service, its limits, and whether you already have an equivalent from another provider. A feature listed in marketing is not necessarily included in every edition or region.
For each extra, ask whether it fills a gap or merely duplicates something you already have. For example, a bundle is easier to justify when the included backup or identity-monitoring service is something you intend to use; it is harder to justify if the feature is not part of your edition, does not support your devices, or would sit unused. The subscription’s actual terms and limits matter more than a broad category label.

You value direct support
Vendor support may be worth paying for if you want help resolving security alerts or configuring a product. Before subscribing, check the support channels and hours included in the specific plan; the existence of a support feature does not establish how quickly or effectively a particular case will be handled.
How should you compare a paid suite with Defender?
Compare the product you would actually install and renew, not just its headline score or introductory feature list. Use the same Windows PC and the same practical requirements when evaluating options.
| What to compare | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Protection | Recent independent tests, their dates, and the tested product edition | Scores describe performance in defined test conditions, not a universal guarantee. |
| Performance | Impact on the hardware and applications you use | A strong protection result does not tell you how a product feels in your own workflow. |
| False positives and usability | Whether legitimate files or actions are misidentified, and how clear alerts are | Frequent interruptions or confusing prompts can undermine a product’s practical usefulness. |
| Device coverage | Number and types of devices included in the plan | Licenses and features may vary by device, plan, and region. |
| Included extras | Whether backup, family controls, VPN, monitoring, or support are actually included | A feature in a product family may not be part of the edition being offered. |
| Privacy and data practices | What data the provider says it collects and how its services handle it | Security software can involve data practices that matter to your comfort and requirements. |
| Renewal terms | The renewal price and subscription duration for your region | The price that matters for an ongoing decision is not necessarily the first-term offer. |
AV-Comparatives’ warning is a useful guardrail: a higher price or more elaborate interface does not itself prove better protection. Use test results as one input, then weigh false alarms, performance, support, privacy, and the extras you would otherwise pay for separately.
It can help to make a short requirements list before comparing brands: how many devices need coverage, which platforms they use, whether you need family controls or support, and which bundled services you would actually use. Eliminate plans that fail a must-have requirement, then compare the remaining options on recent test results, performance, usability, privacy practices, and renewal terms. This keeps a long feature list from obscuring the few differences that affect your decision.
Look beyond the first-term offer. Record the renewal price and subscription length for your region, then decide whether the continuing service is worth that amount. If the price changes after an introductory period, judge the plan on the price you expect to pay to keep it—not only the initial offer. The relevant question is not whether a subscription costs more than Defender, but whether its ongoing price buys services you value.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you run Defender and another antivirus at the same time?
Do not install two real-time antivirus engines expecting them to add together. Microsoft says Defender turns off automatically when another antivirus app is installed and turns back on when that app is removed. The intended setup is one active real-time antivirus product, rather than two competing engines.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you install a paid antivirus, check its own status and Windows Security’s displayed status afterward to confirm which protection is active. If you remove that product, check again that Defender has resumed. The automatic behavior Microsoft documents is useful, but verifying status is a practical way to avoid assuming the PC is protected when an installation or removal has not completed as expected.
This applies whether the other product is Norton, Bitdefender, or another antivirus: adding a second real-time engine is not a way to stack both products’ protection. Choose the one you intend to use, confirm its status, and avoid treating two subscriptions or installations as proof of twice the coverage. Separate services such as a VPN or backup are a different matter; they are not themselves a second real-time antivirus engine.

What is the practical decision?
For an updated Windows 11 home PC that needs baseline protection, start with Windows Security and Microsoft Defender. The 2026 test results show that Defender reached AV-TEST’s Top Product threshold in one cycle and received strong protection results in another; they do not establish that every paid product is worse or that every user has identical needs.
Pay for a suite when you can name the additional need it meets—such as managing multiple devices, family controls, backup, identity features, or support—and confirm those services are included at the renewal terms you accept. If the only reason to pay is the assumption that a more expensive antivirus must block more threats, the available evidence does not justify that assumption.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Windows Security include a firewall?
The cited material establishes Defender Antivirus and SmartScreen as built-in Windows protections, but it does not specify firewall features or settings. Check the Windows Security interface and Microsoft’s documentation for the firewall status and controls on your particular Windows installation.
Will Defender turn back on if I cancel a paid antivirus subscription?
Microsoft documents that Defender turns back on when another antivirus app is removed. That is different from merely ending a subscription: check the paid app’s status and Windows Security after cancellation or expiration to confirm which protection remains active.
Do AV-TEST percentages mean Defender blocks that share of every real-world threat?
No. The reported percentages are outcomes for AV-TEST’s specified protection categories and January–February 2026 test period. Different threats, devices, updates, and user actions are outside what a single lab result can promise.
Can I use a paid VPN or backup without replacing Defender?
VPN and backup are separate services from the real-time antivirus engine. The deciding issue is whether the suite’s extra service is useful and whether you want its terms and subscription; keep only one active real-time antivirus engine.

For many home users, yes, if Windows and applications are kept updated and the need is baseline malware protection. Check Windows Security’s displayed status on your PC; the recommendation is not a guarantee that every setting is enabled or every threat will be blocked.
Is paid antivirus better than Microsoft Defender?
Not automatically. AV-Comparatives cautions against assuming a more expensive or sophisticated product necessarily provides better protection. Compare recent test results and practical factors such as performance, false alarms, device coverage, support, privacy, and the features in the plan you would renew.
What does a paid antivirus subscription actually add?
Depending on the plan, it may add multi-device management, parental controls, backup, VPN, device tracking, identity monitoring, scam protection, or direct support. Check the exact edition, device coverage, limits, region, and renewal terms rather than assuming every feature is included.
Can I run Defender and Norton or Bitdefender together?
Microsoft says Defender turns off automatically when another antivirus app is installed and turns back on when it is removed. Do not install two real-time antivirus engines expecting additive protection; verify which product is active after installation or removal.
