For tasks that depend on Windows itself, Copilot is the better-documented fit; for a desktop workflow built around screenshots, voice, chat history, and a built-in browser, ChatGPT has useful options. Neither is established as the better assistant overall: features depend on the account, device, settings, plan, workspace, and rollout, and the available documentation does not provide a head-to-head accuracy test. The useful choice is the assistant whose available features match the PC tasks you actually do.

What is the difference between Windows Copilot and ChatGPT on a PC?

Both are AI assistants you can use from a Windows computer, but the documented strengths differ. Microsoft describes Copilot features that can work with Windows settings, supported local files, and—if the feature is available and you permit access—some information about the device. OpenAI documents a Windows app with screenshot and photo attachments, voice, chat-history search, a companion window, and a built-in browser.

These are not equivalent forms of access. Sending a screenshot gives an assistant a selected image; it does not establish that the assistant can continuously see everything on your screen. Likewise, finding supported files is not the same as having unrestricted access to every file on the PC. The distinction matters when you compare both convenience and privacy.

This is a comparison of documented capabilities, not a hands-on test. The sources do not establish which assistant gives more accurate answers, responds faster, or performs better on a particular user’s computer.

Which assistant is better for common PC tasks?

Copilot is the more specifically documented option for Windows settings, supported-file discovery, and certain device questions. ChatGPT has documented desktop workflows for screenshots, photos, voice, previous conversations, and web browsing. The table compares what the sources establish—not a guarantee that every feature is enabled for every user.

Task Copilot on Windows ChatGPT Windows app What to consider
Find a setting Can guide you to relevant Windows Settings options. The OpenAI sources reviewed do not document comparable Windows settings guidance or control. Guidance to a setting is not proof that Copilot changes it for you.
Ask about device state PC insights can answer questions about device state after permission, where available. No comparable device-inspection feature was established in the sources reviewed. PC insights is experimental and gradually rolling out; it cannot make system changes or fix issues.
Find or understand local files Can find and open supported files and answer questions about them; some OneDrive-synced files are included. Access is governed by settings. The sources establish screenshot and browser workflows, not equivalent local-file search. Supported types and permissions matter; neither description means every file is accessible.
Share screen context Copilot Vision can use browser-window or app context. You can also capture all or part of the screen and submit it. The Windows release notes document taking and attaching a screenshot. Selected screenshots and Vision’s contextual access are different workflows; the reviewed sources do not establish continuous screen viewing for ChatGPT.
Talk by voice Microsoft documents Windows voice access, including shortcuts and an opt-in “Hey Copilot” wake word. The Windows release notes document Advanced Voice Mode. Check that the feature is available in your current app and account.
Work with web pages Can show linked content in a side pane and use tab context with permission in that conversation. The desktop app has a built-in browser for Windows and macOS. ChatGPT browser availability may depend on plan and workspace settings. These facts do not establish which assistant browses better.
Open quickly or return to a conversation A Copilot key or Windows+C can be configured to open the app or Quick View; Microsoft also documents wake-word access. The Windows release notes document a companion window and chat-history search. Convenience features change how you start or resume a workflow, not the quality of the answer.

When should you choose Copilot for Windows?

Choose Copilot when your main questions concern Windows or files you can access through its supported workflows. Its advantage in the available documentation is context tied to the operating system—not a demonstrated edge in general reasoning.

Finding a Windows setting

If you want help locating an option, Copilot can guide you to the relevant Windows Settings area. A request such as “Make my screen easier to read” illustrates the kind of natural-language help Microsoft describes. Treat that as navigation help: the documented feature does not mean Copilot will necessarily apply the change. Review the option yourself before changing it, especially if it affects privacy, security, accounts, accessibility, or how the PC behaves.

If the answer points to a setting you cannot find, use the exact setting name in Windows Search or open Settings and follow the category path yourself. Windows Search is a separate tool from Copilot: it locates apps and files, while Copilot explains a route or suggests an option. Keeping those roles separate makes troubleshooting easier when a result is incomplete.

Finding a supported file

Copilot can help find, open, and answer questions about supported files, including some files synced with OneDrive. Microsoft’s separate Windows search guidance explains how Windows search can locate files and apps, but Windows search and asking Copilot to understand a file are distinct actions. Check that the file type is supported and that the relevant access settings allow the workflow you intend to use.

For example, “Find my meal prep file” is the kind of natural-language request Microsoft uses to illustrate file discovery. It is an example, not a promise that a file will be found: the file must be in a location and format the feature can access. If several files have similar names, confirm the path, date, and contents before editing or sharing one. A cloud-synced copy may also have different availability from a file stored only on an external drive or in an unsupported folder.

Asking about your device

PC insights is designed to answer questions about device information after you grant permission. It is experimental and gradually rolling out, so it may not appear on your PC even if you use the Copilot app. Microsoft says it does not monitor the PC in the background, fix issues, or make system changes. Use it as a source of information, not as a repair tool or automated settings manager.

When a PC-insights prompt appears, Microsoft describes three choices: allow access for the current session, always allow similar requests, or decline. Select the narrowest option that suits the question. If you ask about storage, memory, or another system detail, treat the response as an explanation to verify in Windows Settings, Task Manager, or the relevant system utility before making a consequential decision.

When is ChatGPT the more useful desktop assistant?

ChatGPT may suit you better if your everyday workflow centers on sharing a selected image, speaking with the assistant, retrieving an earlier conversation, or working in its desktop browser. The documented Windows features are useful across many desktop tasks, but the sources reviewed do not establish equivalent Windows settings navigation or PC-state inspection.

Explaining something on screen

The Windows app release notes document taking and attaching a screenshot. This is useful when the question depends on what a dialog, chart, error message, or other visible item says: you choose the context to share, then ask about it. A screenshot is a snapshot, however, not evidence of continuous access to the screen.

Crop or review the image before sending it. Notifications, browser tabs, account names, QR codes, and document headers can reveal more than the question requires. For an error message, include the complete message and enough surrounding context to identify the app, but omit unrelated windows. If the problem changes over time, take separate screenshots and label what changed rather than assuming one image represents the whole sequence.

OpenAI also documents photo attachments from a webcam in the Windows app. That can help when the relevant information is in front of the camera rather than already on the monitor, such as a label, handwritten note, or hardware indicator. Share only an image you are comfortable sending for the conversation, and avoid including passwords, personal records, or unrelated private details.

Speaking and returning to previous work

The Windows release notes include Advanced Voice Mode, a companion window, and chat-history search. These features can make it easier to speak rather than type, keep the assistant available alongside another task, or find an earlier conversation. A companion window is particularly convenient for drafting, summarizing, or asking a short follow-up without replacing the main application.

Voice is not the same as hands-free control of Windows. The documented feature supports conversation; it does not establish that ChatGPT can operate system settings or inspect the device automatically. Availability can vary, so consult the app’s release notes and your account rather than assuming every installation has the same controls. If a microphone is unavailable or voice is disabled by a workspace policy, text and image attachments remain the documented alternatives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the built-in browser

OpenAI documents a built-in browser in the ChatGPT desktop app for Windows and macOS. It can keep web work inside the desktop workflow instead of requiring a separate browser window. Access may depend on your plan and workspace settings. If it is missing, that does not by itself mean your Windows app is broken; check the relevant account or workspace configuration and the current product documentation.

Browser availability also does not answer questions about source quality or freshness. For an important purchase, account decision, or technical change, inspect the pages yourself and verify dates, links, and instructions. Treat the browser as a way to provide and work with web context, not as proof that every resulting answer is complete.

How do permissions and privacy differ?

Copilot’s privacy statements describe separate workflows, so do not apply one statement about recent files to every feature. The practical question is what context you are sharing, what permission the feature requests, and whether you have enabled the access it needs.

Recent files and file search

Microsoft Support says Copilot references Windows Recent Items to show recent files and that “Copilot does not scan your PC or upload any files automatically.” The statement appears in Microsoft’s answer about how Copilot knows what files you have; it is specifically about showing recent files, not a blanket description of every file-search or screen-context feature. Microsoft says you can hide a recent file. File search has its own settings governing what it can access.

That means a recent-file list and a request to understand a document should be considered different events. Seeing a filename in a list does not necessarily mean the file contents were sent. Conversely, asking Copilot to open or analyze a supported file requires the access and context that workflow specifies. Review file-search settings and the item selected before proceeding.

PC insights permissions

Microsoft says PC insights asks permission before accessing relevant system or file information. You can allow access for that session, always allow similar requests, or decline. Microsoft also says PC insights does not access data without permission, monitor in the background, fix issues, or change system settings.

Microsoft distinguishes the information used to answer from conversation activity: it says personal files and system information are not stored or used to train models, while conversation activity may be used depending on your settings. Do not read that statement as saying conversation activity is never retained or used; review the app’s current privacy controls for your account. A work or school account may also have administrator-managed policies that differ from a personal account.

Sharing screenshots and browser context

For screenshots, photos, and contextual features, consider what appears in the material you choose to share. Copilot Vision may use app or browser context, and Microsoft says tab context is used with permission in that conversation. A deliberately selected screenshot gives you a narrower way to provide context, but you should still inspect it before sending. The OpenAI sources cited here document screenshot and photo attachments, not a directly comparable set of local-file permissions or device-inspection controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before sharing, close or minimize unrelated windows, remove sensitive text where practical, and ask whether the assistant needs the whole screen, one window, or only a cropped region. Permission prompts are useful checkpoints, not guarantees that a broad context is necessary. Declining a prompt may limit the answer but preserves control over what is supplied.

What about price, account type, and availability?

The documented material does not establish a single price comparison or say that every feature belongs to the same plan. Copilot access can vary with the Windows device, Microsoft account, settings, and staged rollout. ChatGPT features can vary with the app version, account, plan, and workspace configuration. Therefore, do not choose on a subscription assumption alone: first check the feature you actually need in your account.

A feature listed in a release note or support article may be experimental, gradually rolling out, or restricted by an organization. Personal and managed Windows PCs can expose different controls, and a browser feature may be unavailable in a workplace workspace even when it appears in general documentation. Confirm eligibility, sign in with the intended account, and check privacy or administrator settings before treating a missing control as a product failure.

How can you decide which one fits your routine?

Start with the task you perform most often, then confirm that the relevant feature is available on your device and account. A feature list is useful only if it matches your actual workflow and the context you are willing to share.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down your recurring task. Is it locating a Windows option, finding a file, asking about device information, explaining a screenshot, speaking aloud, searching old chats, or browsing?
  2. Match the task to the documented workflow. For Windows settings, supported-file discovery, or PC insights, Copilot has the more specifically documented Windows integration. For screenshot/photo sharing, Advanced Voice Mode, chat-history search, a companion window, or the built-in browser, ChatGPT has documented desktop workflows.
  3. Check access before choosing. Confirm the app, account, plan or workspace settings, device support, permissions, and feature rollout. This is especially important for experimental PC insights and the ChatGPT built-in browser.
  4. Decide how much context to share. A selected screenshot, browser-tab context, a local file, and device information are different kinds of access. Choose the narrowest context that lets you ask the question.
  5. Try the task with a low-risk example. Ask for help with a non-sensitive file or a harmless setting, or share a screenshot without personal information. Check whether the result is useful before relying on the assistant for something consequential.
  6. Keep a fallback. Windows Search, Settings, Task Manager, File Explorer, and the regular web browser remain available if an assistant is unavailable or gives an uncertain answer. Use the native tool to verify system state and file locations.

What should you not infer from this comparison?

Feature documentation can answer what a product says it supports; it cannot settle every question about day-to-day performance. The available sources do not provide a comparative accuracy benchmark, measured speed results, or evidence that one assistant handles every task better.

  • A Windows-specific feature is not proof that an assistant will make a change safely or correctly.
  • A screenshot attachment does not establish continuous screen access.
  • File search does not mean access to every file type, folder, or cloud location.
  • A feature appearing in documentation does not guarantee it is enabled for your account, device, region, plan, or workspace.
  • A convenient shortcut, voice mode, or companion window is a workflow benefit—not a quality score for the answers.
  • Permission to view one file, tab, image, or device detail does not imply permission to view everything else on the PC.
  • Neither assistant should be treated as the sole authority for security, privacy, medical, financial, or irreversible system decisions.

Microsoft’s feature details are in its Copilot on Windows access guide, Copilot privacy FAQ, and PC insights guide. OpenAI’s details are in the Windows app release notes and the built-in browser guide. For Windows search itself, see Microsoft’s guide to finding files and apps.

Does ChatGPT for Windows have a built-in browser?

OpenAI documents a built-in browser for its desktop app on Windows and macOS. Access may depend on plan and workspace settings, so a missing browser option may reflect eligibility or configuration.

Can I use Copilot to search every file on my PC?

No such unrestricted access is established. Microsoft describes supported-file workflows and settings that govern file-search access; Windows search is a separate way to locate files and apps.

Can ChatGPT continuously watch my Windows screen?

The Windows app documentation establishes taking and attaching screenshots, not continuous screen viewing. Share a new screenshot when the visible context changes, and inspect it for sensitive information first.

Is Copilot PC insights available to everyone?

No. Microsoft describes PC insights as experimental and gradually rolling out. It may depend on your device, account, settings, and permission choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if I decline a Copilot PC-insights permission request?

Copilot cannot use the requested system or file information for that interaction. Microsoft describes options to allow access for the session, always allow similar requests, or decline.

Can ChatGPT inspect my Windows hardware or fix a system problem?

The reviewed OpenAI documentation does not establish a comparable device-inspection or Windows-repair capability. Use Windows utilities to verify hardware and system state, and treat any suggested fix as advice to review.

Does showing a recent file to Copilot upload it automatically?

Microsoft Support says Copilot references Windows Recent Items and “does not scan your PC or upload any files automatically” in that FAQ context. That statement concerns showing recent files; it should not be generalized to every file-search or screen-context workflow.

Which assistant is better for privacy?

There is no universal winner in the documented material. Compare the exact context you plan to share, the permission prompt, file-search settings, account or workspace policies, and the privacy controls available to you.

Are Copilot and ChatGPT features free or paid?

The documented comparison does not establish one universal price or plan entitlement for every feature. Check the current account, plan, workspace, and product documentation before assuming a capability is included.

Is Copilot more accurate than ChatGPT on Windows tasks?

The cited documentation provides no head-to-head accuracy, speed, or adoption benchmark. Copilot has the more specifically documented Windows integration, while ChatGPT has documented desktop workflows for several other tasks.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Pick Copilot when Windows settings, supported local files, or permission-based PC information are your central needs. Pick ChatGPT when screenshots or webcam photos, voice conversation, chat-history search, a companion window, or its built-in browser better match your routine. Verify availability and permissions on your own account, share only the context required, and confirm important answers with Windows or another primary source. The documentation supports a task-specific choice, not a universal winner.
