In Windows 11, open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup, then switch Remember my preferences on or off. Turn it on to back up supported Windows settings to your Microsoft account for restoration on another device; turn it off to stop future preference backup. If category controls appear beneath the switch, expand them to include only the types of preferences you want.
The same settings path is documented for Windows 10, although Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A disabled switch usually means an administrator policy or required backup capability is unavailable, rather than a problem with the Settings app.

Where do I find “Remember my preferences” in Windows?
The control is on the Windows Backup page inside the Accounts section. You can reach it from the Start menu or with the keyboard shortcut Windows + I.
- Open Settings. Press Windows + I, or select Settings from the Start menu.
- Select Accounts in the Settings sidebar.
- Select Windows backup.
- Locate Remember my preferences.
- Move the switch to On or Off.
- If a category section is displayed, expand it and choose the preference groups to include.
- Stay on the page briefly and check the control again. Windows Backup displays the current configuration, so you can confirm that the change was accepted.
This setting is separate from ordinary file backup. It concerns supported Windows preferences, not a general copy of every file or application on the computer.

What the Windows 11 path looks like
On a current Windows 11 installation, the path is Settings > Accounts > Windows backup. The wording can vary slightly with a Windows update or account type, but the Windows Backup page is where Microsoft places the preference controls.
What Windows 10 users should know
Microsoft’s settings catalog includes Windows 10 and Windows 11, so a Windows 10 computer that still exposes the feature uses the same Accounts and Windows backup path. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; unsupported systems may not receive future fixes or interface changes, so the labels on an older installation can differ from current Windows 11 documentation.
What does “Remember my preferences” actually back up?
The switch controls backup and later restoration of supported Windows settings. Microsoft groups those settings into Accessibility, Personalization, Language preferences, and Other Windows settings. It does not guarantee that every account detail, network credential, or language resource will be synchronized in the same way.
| Category | Examples of preferences covered | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Accessibility | Windows accessibility choices used to make the interface and input easier to use | Only settings supported by Windows Backup are included; the switch is not a complete profile export. |
| Personalization | Theme and colors, taskbar behavior, and related appearance choices | Personalization backup depends on signing in to OneDrive and having available storage. |
| Language preferences | Supported language and input preferences | Language dictionaries are treated differently in Microsoft’s backup-and-restore tables, so do not assume every dictionary entry will return. |
| Other Windows settings | Supported display, input, and notification choices | The exact list can change with Windows and the account context. |
Accounts, Wi-Fi networks and passwords, and language dictionaries appear differently in Microsoft’s settings catalog. That distinction matters when you are moving to a new PC: enabling the switch is not a promise that credentials or every language-related item will be restored automatically.
How do I back up only selected preference categories?
Use the category controls under the main switch when they are available. This lets you keep the broad feature enabled while excluding groups that you do not want associated with your Microsoft account.

- Go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup.
- Set Remember my preferences to On.
- Expand the preference section beneath the switch.
- Review each listed group, such as Accessibility, Personalization, Language preferences, or Other Windows settings.
- Enable only the groups you want backed up and disable the others.
- Return to the top of the page and verify that the displayed state matches your choices.
Category controls may not appear for every account or configuration. When they are absent, Windows is exposing only the controls available for that installation and its backup authority; do not infer that an unlisted category is being copied.

What is the difference between turning the switch off and deleting cloud-synced settings?
Turning off Remember my preferences stops additional preference backup. It does not, by itself, remove settings that Microsoft has already stored for your account. Deleting that existing cloud data is a separate action.
| Action | What it changes | What it does not change |
|---|---|---|
| Turn off Remember my preferences | Stops future backup of supported Windows preferences from that configuration. | Does not automatically erase previously cloud-synced settings. |
| Clear cloud-synced settings | Removes the settings data stored with your Microsoft account after you use the account’s clear option. | Does not delete files stored in OneDrive. |
| Turn the switch on again | Allows supported preferences to be backed up under the available categories. | Does not restore categories that an administrator policy or account limitation blocks. |
How to remove settings already stored online
- Turn off Remember my preferences on the Windows Backup page if you do not want new preference data uploaded.
- Open your Microsoft account’s Devices page in a browser.
- Find Cloud synced settings.
- Choose the option to clear those settings and confirm the action presented by Microsoft.
The cloud-clearing control applies to synchronized settings data. It is not a file-deletion command for OneDrive, so documents and other files stored there are handled separately.
Why is “Remember my preferences” greyed out?
A greyed-out switch normally means Windows cannot let the signed-in user control the feature. Microsoft identifies administrator policy and unavailable Windows settings-backup or Enterprise State Roaming capability as the principal causes.
A work or school administrator controls the setting
On a managed computer, an organization can enable or disable Windows settings backup centrally. The policy named Do not sync can turn off and disable Remember my preferences, leaving no user-level override on the Windows Backup page.

The required backup or roaming capability is not enabled
Microsoft states that the toggles are actionable only when the relevant Windows settings backup or Enterprise State Roaming capability has been enabled. If the capability is unavailable for the account or tenant, the switch can remain inactive even when Windows itself is working normally.
What a consumer user can do
- Check whether the PC is connected to a work or school account under Settings > Accounts.
- If it is managed, contact the organization’s administrator and ask whether Windows settings backup or Enterprise State Roaming is permitted.
- Ask the administrator to review any Do not sync policy if the organization wants users to control the option.
- Do not try to bypass an enforced policy with registry edits or unofficial scripts; the supported fix is an administrator change.
A personal-account user cannot override an enforced organizational policy from this page. The administrator must change the policy or capability, after which the control can become available.
How do account type and storage affect Windows Backup?
Backup behavior depends on the account and storage context, not just the position of the switch.
Personal Microsoft accounts
Microsoft notes that personalization backup requires OneDrive sign-in and available storage. If either condition is missing, appearance preferences may not back up even though you can see the Windows Backup page. Sign in with the Microsoft account you intend to use and make sure its storage is available before judging the result.
Work and school accounts
Managed accounts can have administrator-controlled backup and roaming settings. Microsoft also notes that some app-backup controls are unavailable for work or school accounts. Therefore, a work or school sign-in can expose fewer choices than a personal account, and an administrator may be required to enable the feature.

Why OneDrive is mentioned
OneDrive provides the storage context for certain preference categories, especially personalization. This does not turn Remember my preferences into a OneDrive file-backup switch: files and Windows preference data remain distinct types of data.
Should I leave the switch on or turn it off?
The right choice depends on whether convenience across devices outweighs your desire to keep Windows preferences out of cloud synchronization.
| Situation | Recommended state | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You regularly set up Windows PCs with the same personal Microsoft account. | On, with selected categories if needed. | Supported appearance, accessibility, language, and other preferences can follow the account. |
| You want a clean, manually configured setup on each computer. | Off. | Future supported preference backup is disabled. |
| You want appearance settings backed up but not every available group. | On, then narrow the category controls. | The category section provides a more selective scope where Windows exposes it. |
| The PC belongs to an employer or school. | Follow the organization’s policy. | An administrator may control the switch or prevent synchronization entirely. |
| You are preparing to stop cloud storage of old preference data. | Off, then clear Cloud synced settings. | The two actions affect future backup and existing stored data separately. |
What should I check if the setting does not change?
Use the following order so you can distinguish a display delay from an account or policy restriction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Reopen the page. Close Settings, open it again with Windows + I, and return to Accounts > Windows backup. Confirm the switch and category states shown there.
- Confirm the signed-in account. Make sure the account shown in Settings is the Microsoft account whose backup data you intend to use. A different account has a different cloud settings context.
- Check OneDrive and storage. For personalization backup, verify that OneDrive is signed in and that the account has available storage.
- Look for management. If the computer has a work or school connection, ask the administrator whether a backup, roaming, or Do not sync policy is controlling the page.
- Review category scope. An enabled main switch can still exclude a preference group if its category control is off or unavailable.
- Separate backup from deletion. If old settings remain associated with the account, use the Microsoft account’s Devices page and the Cloud synced settings clear option; changing the Windows switch alone is not that cleanup operation.
If the page continues to show a disabled control after an administrator confirms that the required capability is enabled, record the Windows edition, account type, and exact wording shown in Settings before seeking Microsoft support. Those details identify whether the limitation is local, account-based, or policy-based.
What does Microsoft say about disabling the feature?
“To disable backup of preferences, the user can turn off the Remember my preferences toggle.”

- Expand category controls and narrow the scope when Windows provides them.
- Recheck the page so the displayed state matches your choice.
- For personalization backup, confirm OneDrive sign-in and available storage.
- If the control is greyed out, check for work or school management and ask the administrator about Windows settings backup, Enterprise State Roaming, or Do not sync.
- To erase settings already stored online, use the Microsoft account’s Devices page and clear Cloud synced settings separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Remember my preferences back up my documents and photos?
No. The feature is for supported Windows preference data, such as appearance, accessibility, language, display, input, and notification choices. Documents and photos in OneDrive are separate file data and are not removed when you clear cloud-synced settings.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Will every language setting return on a new Windows PC?
Not necessarily. Microsoft’s backup tables distinguish language preferences from language dictionaries, so a language choice may be handled differently from custom dictionary entries. Treat the feature as support for selected language settings, not a complete export of every word you added.
Can I override a disabled switch on a company laptop?
No. If an organization applies the Do not sync policy or withholds the required backup or roaming capability, the user-facing switch is intentionally unavailable. The organization’s administrator must change the policy or enable the service.
Why do I see fewer backup controls with my work account?
Microsoft notes that some app-backup controls are unavailable for work or school accounts. Account type and organizational policy can therefore produce a narrower Windows Backup page than a personal Microsoft account.
