Remap the smallest layer that solves your problem: use the game’s own Controls menu first, Steam Input for Steam titles, Xbox Accessories for Xbox hardware, and a virtual-controller utility only when a Windows game cannot read your controller directly. On Android, pair the pad, check the game’s controller settings, then use the system Game Controller page on Android 17 or later; older phones usually need an in-game map or an overlay mapper. Which remapping method should you use?

Controller remapping is layered. A binding can live in the game, Windows software, Steam, a manufacturer app, or a virtual-controller utility. Start with the narrowest layer because it preserves native prompts, rumble, analog behavior and anti-cheat compatibility.

• USB: Use a data-capable USB-C cable, not a charge-only lead. USB is the best first isolation test when Bluetooth pairing or detection fails.
• Bluetooth: Unplug USB while pairing so Windows does not expose two paths to the same pad. Remove the old Bluetooth entry and pair again if Steam never lists the controller.

Windows mapping steps

1. Install Xbox Accessories from the Microsoft Store and sign in.
2. Connect the controller by USB-C. Accept a firmware update if offered, and keep the PC awake until the flash finishes.
3. Select the controller, choose Configure, and create a named profile instead of overwriting Default.
4. Open Mapping. Select a control, choose Primary, assign the new function and select OK. Repeat for bumpers, triggers, D-pad or Elite paddles.
5. Save the profile. On an Elite Series 2, choose an onboard slot if the layout must travel with the controller.

Third-party pads are not officially configurable in Xbox Accessories. Use the pad maker’s utility or Steam Input instead.

How do I remap buttons with Steam Input?

Steam Input is the best general-purpose option for a Steam library. It supports Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, generic HID, Steam Controller and Steam Deck hardware, with per-game layouts and optional keyboard, mouse, gyro and touchpad actions.

Enable the controller family

1. Open Steam > Settings > Controller.
2. Enable support for the family you own: Xbox, PlayStation, Switch or Generic. If the family toggle is off, layout edits may not affect the game.

Set a per-game override

1. In Library, right-click the game and choose Properties > Controller.
2. Set Override to Enable Steam Input when the game needs translation, including many XInput-only or keyboard-era titles.
3. Choose Disable Steam Input when the game has reliable native DualSense or Xbox support and Steam is reading the controller twice. Use default follows the game’s normal setting.
4. Return to the game’s Library page, select the controller icon and choose Edit Layout.

Steam Input can bind named actions in games using the Steam Input API. Older or legacy games instead map physical controls to other controls, keyboard keys or mouse actions. Action sets can swap an entire group for gameplay, menus or vehicles; activators can distinguish regular, long, double and release presses; action-set layers can add a temporary mouse layer while a bumper is held. Gyro is available on DualSense, Switch Pro, Steam Deck and Steam Controllers, but not on a standard Xbox pad.

When a DualSense is translated to an emulated Xbox device, the game may display Xbox glyphs. That is expected: the title is receiving an Xbox-style layout rather than Sony-specific button names.

Non-Steam games

1. Choose Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
2. Launch the added entry through Steam.
3. Open its controller icon and edit the layout.

Overlay injection varies by game. A title launched as administrator can block the Steam overlay, and competitive anti-cheat software may reject virtual devices. The stable Steam client update released 13 October 2026 redesigned the configurator for Steam Input API games, adding a multi-binding editor, compatibility labels, inverted button chords and a controller-reordering dialog. How do I use DS4Windows for a PlayStation controller on Windows?

DS4Windows is for a DualShock 4, DualSense or DualSense Edge that a Windows game recognizes only as an Xbox/XInput controller. It uses ViGEmBus to create a virtual Xbox 360 pad, with profiles, optional gyro-to-mouse support and optional HidHide device hiding.

1. Download a current 3.x build from the maintained DS4Windows lineage; the original Jays2Kings repository has been dormant since late 2023.
2. Extract the files and run DS4Windows.exe on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11.
3. Install ViGEmBus when prompted. Install .NET Desktop Runtime if the setup requests it.
4. Optionally install HidHide when a game sees both the physical PlayStation pad and the virtual Xbox pad.
5. Connect by USB or Bluetooth. For DualShock 4-class pairing, hold PS and Share until the light flashes, then select the controller in Windows Bluetooth settings.
6. Confirm that DS4Windows shows the physical pad and a virtual Xbox 360 controller, then assign or select a profile.

Do not enable Steam Input for the same game while DS4Windows is emulating the controller. Valve notes that Steam Input will interface with the emulated Xbox 360 controller instead of using the PS4 controller directly. Emulation also removes the DualSense adaptive-trigger and haptic features that a game could use natively, so prefer native support or Steam Input with Steam Input disabled where appropriate.

When should I use reWASD or AntiMicroX?

Use these tools when the game’s editor, Steam Input and the manufacturer app cannot produce the required output. They are especially useful for keyboard/mouse emulation, macros, shift layers and non-Steam launchers.

reWASD

reWASD is a paid Windows 10/11 64-bit virtual-controller utility. It maps buttons to other buttons, keyboard keys, mouse actions and macros, and supports shift layers, gyro, DualSense adaptive-trigger or haptic passthrough, Elite paddles, Switch Pro/Joy-Con and many third-party pads. It accepts USB, Bluetooth and dongle connections. If Steam Input is also enabled, disable it for that game so both layers do not send input.

AntiMicroX and other free options

AntiMicroX is free and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux for keyboard and mouse mappings. JoyToKey is shareware with automatic profile switching. x360ce remains a niche option for older pre-XInput PC games. For ordinary remaps, Steam Input plus DS4Windows or AntiMicroX covers most needs without a paid layer.

Virtual devices can conflict with anti-cheat systems. In competitive games, prefer the game’s own bindings or Steam Input and avoid macros or multiple virtual-controller drivers.

Why does my controller double-input or appear twice?

Double input almost always means two layers are presenting the same physical pad to the game. A PlayStation controller can be visible as both its native HID device and a virtual Xbox controller, or Steam Input can translate a device that DS4Windows or reWASD is already translating.

1. Exit DS4Windows, reWASD, InputMapper and similar tools completely, including their tray processes.
2. Disable HidHide or other hiding features temporarily while diagnosing, then re-enable only after choosing one final architecture.
3. Unplug extra controllers and reconnect the target pad.

6. Use joy.cpl and Device Manager to identify whether Windows exposes both a physical and a virtual controller.

Keep exactly one transformation layer: game editor, Steam Input, Xbox Accessories, DS4Windows, reWASD or another mapper. A manufacturer profile stored on the controller is different from a virtual-device layer and can remain active while you use the pad elsewhere.

How do I fix a controller that Windows does not detect?

Detection problems must be solved before remapping.

• Swap in a known-good data cable and another USB port; charge-only cables are a common cause of DualSense and Xbox Accessories failures.
• Remove the Bluetooth device in Windows, restart Bluetooth, and pair again with USB unplugged.
• Check joy.cpl and Device Manager. If no HID device appears, remapping software cannot help.
• Update firmware only with the official Xbox Accessories or PlayStation Accessories app.

Pair over Bluetooth or USB

The feature remains subject to beta and OEM differences. Some controllers can show incorrect glyphs even when the remap works, and an OEM skin may hide or rename the page. If the menu is missing, the phone may be below Android 17 or the manufacturer may not expose it; use the game’s editor instead.

Games with no native controller support

Touch-injection apps place virtual taps over on-screen controls. Which controllers can store remaps for use on another device?

Onboard profiles make hardware the remapping layer, which is useful when you move between Windows, Android and consoles.

• Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2: stores up to three custom profiles and one default profile, with a Profile button for switching. Microsoft lists it for Windows PC, iOS and Android as well as Xbox consoles.
• DualSense Edge: provides remappable buttons, back buttons, tunable triggers and sticks, and replaceable stick caps. Firmware management remains a Windows PlayStation Accessories task.
