Yes—Windows is developing a layered way to keep AI agents out of your everyday desktop. Its experimental agent workspace creates a separate Windows account, contained desktop and scoped permissions, so an agent can work alongside you without running as your logged-in user. Microsoft’s broader Execution Containers (MXC) add selectable process, session, WSL and MicroVM isolation for different risk levels. Windows Sandbox is a related disposable option for one-off tests, not a permanent agent home.

These controls are previews, not a universal safety switch. They can be weakened by shared folders, credentials, network access, unsandboxed fallbacks or bypasses. The practical answer is to match the boundary to the job, limit what the agent can reach, and keep endpoint security in place.

What is Windows’ agent workspace?

An agent workspace is a separate Windows environment where an AI agent operates under its own standard account and desktop session. Microsoft describes it as a contained environment in which agents can work in parallel with a human user. Applications and actions driven by Copilot Actions run as the agent account rather than the account of the person signed in to the PC.

That distinction matters because a normal desktop automation tool inherits your identity. If it can read your profile, it may also reach personal files, browser data, mapped drives, clipboard contents or credentials available to your account. The workspace is intended to keep the agent’s interactive session apart from your human session and to make access requests visible rather than silently granting everything.

The feature is experimental and administrator-controlled. It is disabled by default on ordinary Windows installations, so seeing references to it does not mean every Windows 11 PC already has the capability.

How does the Windows agent cage work?

Microsoft’s security documentation describes four parts that work together: user control, agent accounts, an agent workspace and user transparency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

User control

An administrator must enable the experimental agentic-feature setting. During preview, the documented path is Settings > System > AI components > Agent tools > Experimental agentic features. If the switch is absent, the device may not be on a supported preview build, the feature may be governed by policy, or the administrator may have left it disabled.

Dedicated agent accounts

Enabling the feature creates accounts for agents. Those accounts are separate from your interactive Windows account, so an agent does not automatically receive the same profile and system access you do. Separation is useful, but it is not the same as a hardware-isolated virtual machine; permissions and policy still determine what the account can do.

A contained desktop and session

The agent receives its own desktop environment. You can continue using your normal desktop while the agent performs work in parallel, with limited visibility into your desktop activity. This is designed for tasks that need a Windows UI without handing the agent your live session.

Transparency and authorization

The preview can involve six common folders in your profile: Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Music, Pictures and Videos. Access outside the permitted scope requires authorization. Treat every authorization prompt as a security decision: approve only the specific folder and task that require it, and avoid broad access for convenience.

On preview builds 26100.7344 and later, agent connectors in the Windows On-Device Registry are contained by default, according to Microsoft’s support guidance. Build availability and policy behavior can change during the preview, so verify the exact build and organizational settings on the machine you manage.

How do I enable experimental agentic features safely?

Use a test machine or a separate Windows profile first. The setting is administrator-enabled, and enabling it creates agent accounts and a workspace, so document the change before allowing an agent to perform real work.

  1. Check the Windows build and management status. Confirm that the device is running a preview build that supports the feature and that you have administrator authority. On managed PCs, ask whether organizational policy permits experimental agentic features.
  2. Open the feature control. Go to Settings > System > AI components > Agent tools > Experimental agentic features.
  3. Enable the feature only for the intended test. Read the disclosure about agent accounts and workspace creation. Record which user, folders and applications will be involved.
  4. Start with a harmless task. Ask the agent to create a new file in a test folder or inspect a non-sensitive project. Confirm that the action occurs in the agent environment and that your normal desktop remains separate.
  5. Approve access narrowly. When the agent requests one of the supported profile folders, grant only the folder needed for the current job. Do not approve access to an entire profile when a project subfolder is sufficient.
  6. Revoke or disable when finished. Remove unnecessary permissions and turn off the experimental feature if the machine no longer needs it. Preview controls can change, so reassess after Windows updates.

Which files can an agent workspace reach?

The preview’s common-folder model covers Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Music, Pictures and Videos. That is a scope, not a guarantee that every application will behave identically. An agent can still request authorization for work outside the allowed scope, and a human approval can expand its reach.

Keep sensitive material outside any folder you plan to authorize. That includes password exports, private keys, tax records, identity documents, client data and browser profiles. If a task needs one repository, place a sanitized copy in a dedicated working directory rather than exposing your whole development tree.

Also check indirect paths. A project may contain symbolic links, mounted drives, network shares, package caches or configuration files that point elsewhere. The workspace boundary is only as strong as the paths and services you make available to it.

What are Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC), and which type should I choose?

MXC is the platform direction behind several containment strengths. Select the backend according to whether the agent needs fast tool execution, a persistent Windows desktop, Linux tooling or stronger isolation for risky code.

MXC option Isolation model Best fit Important limitation
Process container Operating-system process policy boundary Coding agents, generated code and command-line tools where low latency matters It is not a virtual machine or a full user-account boundary.
Session container Separate account and session with desktop, clipboard, UI and input boundaries Long-running automation that needs a Windows desktop It is a Windows 11 platform capability whose policy and availability can change.
WSL container Linux execution environment through Windows Subsystem for Linux Linux-first agent toolchains and build systems It does not provide the same Windows desktop model as a session container.
MicroVM Hardware-backed virtualization Higher-risk workloads needing a stronger boundary The cited material describes it as experimental and heavier than process containment.

On Windows, GitHub Copilot uses the BaseContainer tier of MXC’s ProcessContainer backend, according to Microsoft’s local-model guidance. That tells you which containment tier is in use; it does not make every agent action safe by itself.

Is Windows Sandbox enough for an AI agent?

Usually not for an always-on assistant. Windows Sandbox is a disposable, hypervisor-isolated Windows desktop intended for testing unknown applications and files. When you close it, the environment and its changes are deleted, making it useful for a clean experiment but inconvenient for a continuing project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Networking is enabled by default in Windows Sandbox. For an untrusted file or a test that does not need internet access, disable networking in the Sandbox configuration before launching it. Otherwise, a suspicious program can communicate externally even though the desktop itself is disposable.

Choice What persists Typical job Key caution
Agent workspace Separate agent account and supported workspace configuration Windows agents working beside you over multiple tasks Experimental, administrator-enabled and permission-scoped.
MXC process or session container Depends on the host integration and workload Tool execution or long-running desktop automation Choose the boundary deliberately; process isolation is weaker than a VM.
Windows Sandbox Nothing after close unless you export data One-off testing of unknown software or files Networking is on by default and must be disabled when unnecessary.

Can an AI agent see my desktop, clipboard or credentials?

The agent workspace is designed to limit visibility into your interactive desktop, while a session container can enforce desktop, clipboard, UI and input boundaries. Those controls reduce accidental exposure, but they do not promise that every application, connector or integration is blind to every piece of data.

Credentials are a particularly important exception. VS Code’s security guidance warns that explicitly injected credentials, allowed paths, unrestricted or local network access, unsandboxed fallbacks and bypasses can weaken isolation. Do not paste API keys into an agent prompt or place long-lived secrets in a folder the agent can read. Prefer short-lived, least-privilege tokens delivered through a controlled service, and revoke them after the task.

Clipboard sharing deserves the same treatment as file sharing. If an automation workflow needs clipboard transfer, use a dedicated session boundary and copy only non-sensitive text. Clear the clipboard after use, and avoid copying passwords or recovery codes while the agent is active.

How do I keep a coding agent away from my real PC?

Use a disposable or narrowly scoped project workspace, then layer policy controls around it. A practical workflow looks like this:

  1. Clone or copy only the needed repository. Remove production credentials, personal files, private certificates and unrelated projects from the working copy.
  2. Choose the lowest-risk backend that meets the task. A process container can be appropriate for ordinary code generation and tests; use a session container when a desktop is required; consider a MicroVM for higher-risk code if the experimental capability is available.
  3. Constrain file paths. Allow the project directory and required build caches, not the whole user profile or every mounted drive.
  4. Constrain network access. Permit only the package registries, source hosts or test services the build needs. Disable networking for tasks that can run offline.
  5. Keep secrets outside the workspace. Supply temporary credentials through a broker or environment mechanism that is scoped to the job, then invalidate them.
  6. Review generated commands. Read shell commands, install scripts and configuration changes before execution. Sandboxing reduces blast radius; it does not prove that the code is benign.
  7. Export results deliberately. Copy the finished patch, build artifact or report back to the host after inspection rather than granting the agent a permanent shared path.

This approach follows VS Code’s warning that “sandboxing is an added layer.” It is not a virtual machine or user-account boundary in every implementation, not a standalone security boundary and not a replacement for endpoint security.

What can weaken Windows agent isolation?

  • Broad shared folders: A permitted directory may contain links or configuration that lead to sensitive data.
  • Injected credentials: A token available to the agent can be used by any process that gains access to the workspace.
  • Unrestricted networking: A compromised tool can download payloads or exfiltrate files.
  • Unsandboxed fallback: If a tool fails and the workflow retries outside the container, the security model changes at that moment.
  • Bypass mechanisms: Administrative overrides, connector bugs or policy exceptions can defeat the intended boundary.
  • Human approvals: Approving every access request turns a scoped design into broad access in practice.

Use endpoint protection, ordinary Windows account hygiene, patching and backups alongside containment. No source cited here publishes a security percentage or benchmark proving that one option blocks every attack.

Which setup should I use?

Choose based on the task’s required surface area, not on the word “AI.”

  • Need an agent to work beside you in Windows? Use the experimental agent workspace, keep permissions narrow and treat every folder approval as temporary.
  • Need fast coding and command execution? Use an MXC process container when its policy boundary is sufficient, with restricted paths and network rules.
  • Need a persistent desktop automation session? Use an MXC session container so desktop, clipboard, UI and input can be bounded separately from your own session.
  • Need Linux-first tools? Use a WSL container, while remembering that it is not the same as a contained Windows desktop.
  • Need to inspect an unknown installer or file once? Use Windows Sandbox and disable its default networking unless the test requires internet access.
  • Expect genuinely high-risk code? Prefer the strongest available boundary, such as an experimental MicroVM, and combine it with network, credential and endpoint controls.

Windows’ direction is therefore a cage made of layers rather than one magic switch: a separate identity, a separate desktop, scoped authorization and a container chosen for the workload. That can keep an AI agent away from your real PC, but only if you avoid granting the very paths, secrets and escape routes the cage is meant to restrict.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will closing Windows Sandbox save the files I created there?

No. Windows Sandbox is designed to discard its state when the window closes. Export only the files you have inspected and want to keep before shutting it down.

Should I give an agent my long-lived API key for convenience?

Avoid it. Use a short-lived, least-privilege credential through a controlled mechanism, limit its network destinations and revoke it when the task ends.

Does a container replace antivirus or endpoint protection?

No. Microsoft and VS Code describe containment as an additional layer, not a complete security boundary. Keep normal endpoint protection, updates, account controls and backups in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are there published performance numbers comparing MXC backends?

The cited Microsoft material is architectural and configuration-focused; it does not publish named performance benchmarks or adoption percentages. Select a backend by required isolation and desktop or Linux capabilities rather than an assumed speed ranking.
