Resize a Windows 365 Cloud PC from the Microsoft Intune admin center or, for Business subscriptions, from the Windows 365 web portal. Select the provisioned Cloud PC, choose Resize, pick an available target size, and submit. The new license determines the available vCPU, RAM, and storage. CPU and memory can move up or down; OS disk capacity can only move up. Save work and have the user sign out first because the operation disconnects the session.
What does resizing a Windows 365 Cloud PC actually change?
Resize changes the Cloud PC hardware profile while keeping the existing Cloud PC and its user and disk data. Microsoft describes the action as preserving user and disk data while allowing resource changes within the limits of the target license.

A resize is therefore different from provisioning a replacement Cloud PC. You keep the same managed device and data, but the license assignment and resource profile change. GPU Cloud PCs are an exception: Microsoft does not support resizing them, even if a GPU option appears in an administrative flow.
What must be ready before you start?
Most failed resize attempts come from an ineligible device, unavailable license inventory, or incomplete permissions. Check these conditions before opening the action.

- Device state: The Cloud PC must show Provisioned. A device in another lifecycle state is not eligible for the normal resize operation.
- Target inventory: The desired configuration must have an available Windows 365 license in the tenant. The size picker shows what can be assigned at that moment; it is not a catalog of every Microsoft SKU.
- Correct administration role: Enterprise direct-license operations require an Intune Service Administrator, or the documented combination of Intune Reader with the relevant Cloud PC or Windows 365 administrator roles. Business operations require the Windows 365 Administrator role or a custom role with equivalent permissions.
- Group licensing access: A group-based Enterprise change additionally requires permission to manage Entra group membership and licensing.
- Network capacity for certain hybrid deployments: An Entra hybrid-join Cloud PC using bring-your-own network (BYON) needs a second IP address during the move. If the network cannot provide it, the operation can fail even when the license change is correct.
- User coordination: Tell the user when the change will occur, ask them to save files, and have them sign out. The service forcibly disconnects the session during processing.
How do I resize one Enterprise Cloud PC with a directly assigned license?
For a directly assigned Enterprise license, Intune handles the old-to-new license swap when you submit the resize. You do not manually remove the original license first.
- Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center with an eligible administrator account.
- Open Devices > All devices.
- Select the Cloud PC you want to change and confirm that its state is Provisioned.
- Choose Resize in the device actions.
- Review the sizes offered by the tenant and select the target configuration. If the required size is missing, stop and obtain inventory before continuing.
- Select Resize again to submit the action and confirm any warning.
For direct assignment, Microsoft automatically unassigns the original license and assigns the selected license as part of the operation. Record the old and new configurations in your change ticket so you can verify the result and explain the new license requirement to procurement or finance.
How do I resize a Windows 365 Business Cloud PC?
The Business workflow uses the Windows 365 web portal rather than the Intune device list, but the decision is the same: choose an available target size for a provisioned Cloud PC.
- Sign in at windows365.microsoft.com with an account that has the Windows 365 Administrator role or an equivalent custom role.
- Open your organization’s list of Cloud PCs.
- Select the device, then choose Devices > Resize.
- Select one of the sizes currently offered for that tenant.
- Submit the resize and notify the user that the existing session will be disconnected.
Business guidance from Microsoft says access can be unavailable for approximately 15 to 20 minutes while the service applies the new profile. Treat that interval as an operational estimate rather than a guaranteed service-level duration, and schedule the change outside the user’s critical work period.
How does group-based Enterprise licensing change the procedure?
With group-based licensing, the resize request and the license transition are separate conditions. The Cloud PC enters a waiting state until both the old license is removed and the target license is assigned.
- Start Resize for the Cloud PC in Intune and choose the target size.
- Submit the action so the device enters Resize pending license.
- Remove the source license from the Entra group or assignment that currently licenses the device.
- Assign the target license through the appropriate Entra group or licensing assignment.
- Verify that both changes are complete. Microsoft states that their order does not matter; processing starts only after both are satisfied.
Microsoft documents a 48-hour pending window for this transition. If only the source license is removed and the target is not assigned before that window expires, the Cloud PC enters a grace period. If neither required licensing change is completed, it returns to Provisioned rather than completing the resize.

In hybrid Entra environments, directory synchronization can take up to 30 minutes. Allow for that delay before deciding that an apparently correct group change has failed, and check synchronization status before making another licensing edit.
How do I resize Cloud PCs in bulk?
Intune’s bulk action is intended for a controlled set of devices and supports up to 5,000 Cloud PCs in one operation, according to Microsoft documentation published in 2026. Microsoft recommends testing a small group first so that a mistaken target size or licensing rule does not affect the entire population.
- In Intune, open Devices > All devices > Bulk device actions.
- Choose OS (Windows) > Cloud PCs > Resize.
- Select the source size and the target size.
- Choose the individual devices or group members to include.
- Review the operation, confirm the user-impact window, and submit.
Bulk processing does not bypass licensing. Group-based devices still need the source license removed and the target license assigned. For mixed estates, separate operations by source and target profile when the wizard requires a single pair, and keep a record of excluded devices so they can be handled after the main change.
How long is a user disconnected, and what can be lost?
Resize is a remote action that disconnects the current session. Unsaved application changes can be lost, so the safest sequence is to announce the change, save documents, close applications, and sign out before submitting it.

Enterprise timing can vary with the target profile, licensing propagation, directory synchronization, and network configuration, so do not promise an exact return time to the user. Keep an administrator available to check the device state and test a connection when processing finishes.
What users should do before the change
- Save files to the approved local or cloud location.
- Complete or pause long-running jobs that cannot be resumed safely.
- Close remote sessions and applications that may hold unsaved state.
- Sign out of Windows rather than simply locking the screen.
What administrators should verify afterward
- The Cloud PC returns to a healthy, provisioned state.
- The user can connect with the normal Windows 365 client or browser.
- Windows reports the expected memory, processor, and disk capacity.
- Business applications, mapped resources, and user files are present.
Why is Resize unavailable or why did the operation fail?

Resize is greyed out
- License warning or expiration: An inactive or warning-state license can disable the action. Restore an active license, allow the tenant status to update, and reopen the device record.
- Device is not Provisioned: Wait for the current provisioning, reprovisioning, or recovery action to finish. Resize is designed for a provisioned Cloud PC.
- No target inventory: If the desired SKU is not in the size list, the tenant has no assignable inventory for that configuration at that moment.
- Insufficient role: Sign in with the required Intune, Windows 365, Cloud PC, Entra group, and licensing permissions for the chosen workflow.
The target size does not appear
The picker is inventory-dependent. Obtain an additional license through an authorized purchasing channel—Microsoft lists Enterprise Agreement (EA), Cloud Solution Provider (CSP), Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA), and Web Direct—and then retry after the license is available in the tenant.
The request is pending in a group-based setup
Check both sides of the transition: the original license must be removed and the target license must be assigned. In a hybrid directory, allow synchronization time and confirm that the expected Entra group membership and license assignment have reached Microsoft 365.

A BYON hybrid-join resize fails
Check the address pool for the second IP required during the move. Freeing or allocating the needed address before retrying is more reliable than repeatedly changing the license assignment.
A GPU Cloud PC is offered in the interface
Do not proceed. Microsoft states that GPU Cloud PCs are unsupported for resize, even when the interface appears to expose the action.
You selected a smaller disk
Storage cannot be reduced through Resize. Choose a target with equal or greater OS disk capacity, or keep the current profile and change only the CPU and memory direction.
Which resize approach fits your environment?
The right workflow depends on two independent choices: how the license is assigned and how many devices must change. This matrix keeps those decisions separate.

Regardless of scope, resource direction remains the same: CPU and RAM can increase or decrease, while OS storage can only increase. Identity permissions, target inventory, user disruption, and BYON network capacity should be reviewed before choosing either path.

A short change record prevents the most common operational mistakes and gives support staff the facts they need if a user cannot reconnect.
- Define the objective: Record whether the change addresses memory pressure, CPU contention, storage growth, or cost control through a smaller CPU/RAM profile.
- Confirm the licensing model: Identify whether the current license is directly assigned or inherited from an Entra group.
- Check eligibility: Verify Provisioned state, administrator permissions, target inventory, and any second-IP requirement.
- Choose a maintenance window: Include the expected Business interruption of 15 to 20 minutes and additional contingency for Enterprise licensing or synchronization.
- Prepare the user: Get confirmation that files are saved and the session is signed out.
- Execute the correct workflow: Use Intune for Enterprise and bulk actions, or the Windows 365 portal for a Business Cloud PC.
- Validate: Confirm the final profile, connection, applications, and user data before closing the change.
- Clean up licensing records: For group-based changes, confirm the source assignment is gone and the target assignment remains intentional.
What should you do when the required license is unavailable?
Do not substitute an approximate size or create a replacement device solely because the target SKU is missing. The resize list reflects current assignable inventory, and the operation cannot begin without a suitable license.
Ask your licensing administrator or procurement team to obtain the required Windows 365 license through one of Microsoft’s listed channels: EA, CSP, MCA, or Web Direct. After the license appears as available, reopen the Cloud PC and verify that the intended target is listed before submitting the action. A CSP can also help match the requested configuration to the tenant’s licensing agreement, but the purchase terms and availability depend on your organization and region.
