You can access iCloud Keychain passwords on Windows 11 using iCloud for Windows and Apple’s browser extension, but Apple’s published Windows instructions do not establish direct iCloud Keychain passkey syncing through that app or extension. For a passkey sign-in on your PC, use the option the website and browser actually offer—such as a phone, Windows Hello, a security key, or a passkey manager configured in Windows. Those options are not evidence that an iCloud passkey has synced to Windows.

Can I sync Apple passkeys with Windows 11?

Apple documents iCloud Keychain syncing passwords and passkeys among approved Apple devices. Its Windows guide documents accessing iCloud passwords, verification codes, and browser autofill; it does not describe creating, syncing, or using iCloud Keychain passkeys through the iCloud Passwords app or browser extension on Windows.

That distinction matters: Microsoft documents Windows passkey-provider settings and says Apple iCloud Keychain can be a synced passkey manager. That describes Windows passkey-provider options in general, not a confirmed connection between iCloud Keychain passkeys and Apple’s Windows app or extension. The safest practical conclusion is that password access on Windows is documented, while direct Apple passkey operation through this Windows workflow is not established by the published Apple instructions.

What the Windows workflow does

  • Provides access to iCloud Keychain passwords through the iCloud Passwords app and supported browser extensions.
  • Can autofill saved website passwords and can save or update website passwords through the extension.
  • Provides access to saved verification codes described in Apple’s Windows documentation.
  • Does not, in Apple’s published Windows instructions, explain passkey creation, passkey autofill, or passkey syncing from iCloud Keychain.

What it does not prove

A passkey appearing in iCloud Keychain on an iPhone or Mac does not mean it is available to Windows through Apple’s password extension. Likewise, Windows offering a third-party passkey provider does not confirm Apple’s app has implemented that connection. Keep the credential’s provider and the sign-in method separate when troubleshooting.

There are two different questions hidden in “sync Apple passkeys with Windows 11.” The first is whether the credential is replicated into a Windows-accessible passkey manager. The second is whether a website can ask another device to approve a sign-in. You may be able to use an iPhone as a cross-device authenticator without copying the passkey to the PC. Conversely, Windows Hello can create or use a passkey on that Windows device without involving iCloud Keychain.

How do I set up iCloud Passwords on my Windows 11 PC?

Install iCloud for Windows, enable Passwords & Keychain, then add Apple’s extension to a supported browser. The setup requires an Apple Account with two-factor authentication and Apple’s specified security approval conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the prerequisites first

  • Your Apple Account must have two-factor authentication enabled.
  • The trusted device receiving the verification code must run iOS 14, iPadOS 14, or macOS 11 or later.
  • For Apple’s Windows setup, either Advanced Data Protection for iCloud must be enabled or an Apple device must be within Bluetooth range of the Windows PC.
  • Use Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Firefox for the browser extension; these are the browsers Apple lists.
  • Have access to the trusted Apple device or phone number that can receive the approval code. Apple also lists a security key as an approval method when the setup requests one.

The Advanced Data Protection and Bluetooth condition is an either/or requirement in Apple’s setup description. If you do not use Advanced Data Protection, plan to have an Apple device nearby and Bluetooth available while completing setup. A device that is merely signed in to the same Apple Account but is out of Bluetooth range may not satisfy that step.

Install and enable the feature

  1. Install and open iCloud for Windows on the PC. Sign in with the Apple Account that holds the iCloud Keychain passwords you want to use.
  2. In iCloud for Windows, turn on Passwords & Keychain. If approval is requested, enter the code sent to a trusted Apple device or phone number, or use a security key.
  3. Open the Passwords & Keychain settings in iCloud for Windows. Install the extension for the browser you use—Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.
  4. Open the browser extension and complete its verification. Apple’s browser guidance describes entering a six-digit verification code to enable it.
  5. Visit a site whose password is already saved in iCloud Keychain. Use the extension to select the account and autofill its sign-in details. The extension can also save or update website passwords.
  6. Test one ordinary password login before trying to diagnose a passkey. This confirms that the Apple Account, Passwords & Keychain switch, browser extension, and verification step are all working as a chain.

Know what happens to browser password saving

Apple says that enabling the iCloud Passwords browser extension turns off the browser’s built-in password-saving feature. Apple’s exact warning is: “When you enable the iCloud Passwords browser extension, the browser’s built-in password-saving feature is turned off.” If you currently rely on the browser’s own saved-password store, decide how you want to manage existing and future credentials before enabling the extension.

The documented behavior does not describe a migration of passwords already stored by Chrome, Edge, or Firefox into iCloud Keychain. Do not assume that installing the extension merges two stores, removes duplicates, or imports every login. Make a list of the accounts you need, confirm where each password is currently stored, and test the most important sites after the change.

What should I expect in the browser?

For a saved password, the extension should let you choose an account and fill the website’s sign-in fields. It can also offer to save a new password or update an existing one when the site changes it. The extension is therefore a password utility, not a general-purpose display of every credential associated with every Apple device.

Browser support is limited to the browsers Apple lists. If you use another Windows browser, the iCloud Passwords extension may not be available or may not be covered by Apple’s instructions. Use one of the listed browsers for the documented workflow rather than assuming that a Chromium-based browser is automatically supported.

What is the difference between a password and a passkey here?

A password is a website secret that the iCloud Passwords extension can fill into a username-and-password form. A passkey is a different sign-in credential that a website and an authenticator handle through a passkey prompt. Seeing a password in the iCloud Passwords app says nothing about whether the same site’s passkey is available through that app.

Apple describes iCloud Keychain as keeping passwords and passkeys available and up to date across approved Apple devices. The Windows-specific instructions, however, are written around iCloud Passwords, verification codes, and browser extensions. Until Apple provides a Windows procedure for passkey creation or use, treat those as separate capabilities.

Can I use an iPhone passkey on my PC?

Possibly, if the website and browser present a cross-device passkey option. Microsoft describes using a phone or tablet for passkey sign-in, which may involve scanning a QR code and Bluetooth pairing; this uses the phone as the authenticator and is different from syncing the passkey into Windows through Apple’s extension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At the website’s sign-in prompt, follow the choices actually shown. Depending on the site and Windows configuration, the available route may be a phone or tablet, a passkey provider configured for Windows, Windows Hello, or a physical security key. Do not assume every site presents all of these choices, or that they work interchangeably.

Passkey sign-in paths on a Windows PC

Where the credential is held What may be needed at sign-in How it relates to iCloud Keychain
A synced passkey manager The provider configured to supply the passkey Microsoft identifies Apple iCloud Keychain as a possible synced provider, but that does not establish support through Apple’s Windows app or extension.
A phone or tablet The mobile device; sign-in may involve a QR code and Bluetooth pairing This is a cross-device sign-in path, not proof that the passkey has synced to the Windows PC.
The Windows device through Windows Hello The Windows sign-in method, such as the configured biometric or PIN This is a Windows device credential, not an iCloud Keychain-synced passkey.
A physical FIDO2 security key The security key, used as the passkey credential This is a separate credential method and does not provide iCloud Keychain syncing.

The “where stored” column is the key comparison. A synced manager is intended to make a credential available on linked devices. A Windows Hello credential is associated with the Windows device and its local sign-in method. A FIDO2 key is a separate physical authenticator. A phone flow keeps the credential on the phone while the PC asks that phone to approve the sign-in. None of those descriptions, by themselves, demonstrates that an Apple passkey has been copied into Windows.

Where do I configure passkey services in Windows 11?

Microsoft documents the path Settings > Accounts > Passkeys > Advanced options for configuring passkey services, including third-party manager integration. This is a Windows setting for passkey services; finding it does not itself add Apple’s Windows app as an iCloud Keychain passkey provider.

Availability can depend on device management: Microsoft notes that an organization administrator may disable the feature. If this is a work- or school-managed PC and the option is missing or unavailable, the administrator may control whether it can be used. A missing menu is therefore not proof that iCloud for Windows is broken.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the provider deliberately

Before saving a new passkey, read the provider name in the website or Windows prompt. Microsoft’s guidance says, “Passkey management is handled within your passkey provider.” That explains why a credential created with one provider may not appear in another provider’s app or settings, even when both are available on the same PC.

Record the provider when you create a passkey. If you later need to remove it, change it, or recover access, return to that provider’s management screen. Deleting an entry from the iCloud Passwords app, a Windows passkey list, a phone, or a security key are not interchangeable operations unless the credential is actually owned by that location.

Why doesn’t my iCloud passkey show up in Windows?

The most important possibility is that Apple’s Windows password workflow is not documented as a passkey-sync workflow. iCloud for Windows may be correctly set up for passwords while a passkey remains available only through another provider or a cross-device sign-in route.

Check the sign-in path

  • The site offers a phone or tablet option: follow the site’s cross-device flow and use the phone or tablet where the passkey is available. A QR code and Bluetooth pairing may be involved. Keep the phone unlocked and nearby if the site asks for those actions.
  • The site asks Windows for a passkey: note which Windows provider or device method is offered. A Windows Hello or security-key passkey is distinct from an iCloud Keychain credential.
  • You expected the iCloud Passwords extension to show the passkey: Apple’s Windows guide documents password access, not direct passkey handling. Do not treat a missing passkey as proof that ordinary iCloud password setup failed.
  • The Windows provider settings are unavailable: check whether the PC is managed by an organization, because an administrator may disable passkey-provider integration.
  • The website shows only a password field: use the iCloud Passwords extension for the saved password. A site may support passwords and passkeys through different controls, and the password extension will not necessarily add a passkey button.

Separate password problems from passkey limitations

If a saved password does not appear, check that iCloud for Windows is signed in to the Apple Account that stores it, that Passwords & Keychain is enabled, and that the browser extension is installed and verified. Confirm that you are using Chrome, Edge, or Firefox and that the extension’s six-digit verification step was completed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If password autofill works but a passkey does not appear, the two behaviors are different; successful password setup does not establish Apple passkey support on Windows. Try the phone, Windows provider, Windows Hello, or security-key choice that the website presents instead of repeatedly reinstalling the password extension.

If the extension will not enable, revisit the Apple prerequisites: two-factor authentication, a qualifying trusted device for receiving the code, and either Advanced Data Protection or a nearby Apple device over Bluetooth. Also complete the extension’s six-digit verification step when prompted. If approval still fails, check whether the code is being sent to the expected trusted device or phone number and whether a security key is available as an alternative approval method.

Should I enable the iCloud browser extension if I already save passwords in my browser?

Enable it if you want the documented iCloud Keychain password access and autofill workflow, but account for the change to browser password saving. Apple states that turning on the extension disables the browser’s built-in password-saving feature. The available documentation does not establish that enabling the extension transfers passwords already saved by the browser into iCloud Keychain.

Before switching, identify where your existing logins are stored and whether you need them in iCloud Keychain. Avoid assuming that two password stores merge automatically. If you also use passkeys, make a separate note of the provider attached to each passkey; the password extension’s operation does not settle the passkey provider question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After setup, test both a login whose password already exists in iCloud Keychain and a login that you deliberately update. This separates an extension or verification problem from an account that simply was never saved in iCloud Keychain. Keep a recovery method for important accounts while you confirm that the new workflow behaves as expected.

What is the practical setup to use today?

For Windows password autofill, use Apple’s documented iCloud for Windows setup. For a passkey sign-in, use the method the website presents and verify which provider is handling the credential. This keeps the known password workflow useful without representing it as a passkey sync feature Apple has not documented for Windows.

  1. Set up iCloud for Windows and Passwords & Keychain if you need your saved iCloud passwords on the PC.
  2. Confirm two-factor authentication, the trusted-device operating-system requirement, and either Advanced Data Protection or Bluetooth proximity before starting.
  3. Install and verify the extension in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, after accounting for browser password saving being turned off.
  4. Test password autofill and, where needed, saving or updating a website password.
  5. For each site that supports passkeys, read the available sign-in choices instead of expecting the password extension to surface an iCloud passkey.
  6. If using a cross-device passkey, keep the phone or tablet with the credential available and complete the QR/Bluetooth process if prompted.
  7. If using a Windows provider, Windows Hello, or a security key, remember that this is a distinct passkey route, not an iCloud Keychain sync confirmation.
  8. When a passkey is created, note its provider so you know where its management and deletion controls live.

What should you do when a site offers several passkey choices?

Start with the option that matches where you want the credential to live. Choose a phone or tablet when you intentionally want the mobile device to approve the Windows sign-in. Choose Windows Hello when you want a credential usable through the Windows device’s configured sign-in method. Choose a physical FIDO2 key when you have that key available and want a separate hardware authenticator. Choose a synced manager only when that provider is actually configured and the site identifies it.

Do not select an option merely because it contains the word “sync.” A provider may sync within its own ecosystem without syncing to iCloud Keychain, and a cross-device phone flow may work without creating a Windows copy. Read the confirmation screen and note the provider before completing registration.

Can Apple’s Windows app create or delete iCloud passkeys?

Apple’s Windows guide does not explain passkey creation, passkey use, or passkey deletion through the iCloud Passwords app or extension. The safe answer is that those operations are not established by the Windows password instructions. Use the provider that the website or Windows prompt identifies, and manage the passkey there.

This limitation also applies to assumptions about deletion. Removing a passkey from Windows, a phone, a security key, or another manager should not be presumed to remove an iCloud Keychain entry. First identify the owner; then use that owner’s documented management controls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep using Windows Hello if I use iCloud Passwords?

Yes. The documented iCloud Passwords extension changes browser password-saving behavior; it does not say that Windows Hello must be turned off. A Windows Hello passkey remains a separate Windows credential rather than an iCloud Keychain passkey.

What if I don’t receive the iCloud verification code on my PC setup?

Apple’s setup allows a code sent to a trusted Apple device or phone number, and also lists a security key as an approval method. Make sure the trusted device meets Apple’s stated operating-system minimum. If the PC is managed, ask its administrator whether passkey-related settings are restricted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If I delete a passkey in Windows, will it also disappear from iCloud Keychain?

The Windows and Apple instructions do not establish that deleting a credential in one provider removes it from another. First identify which provider owns the passkey; Microsoft says passkey management is handled within that provider.

Can I use iCloud Keychain on Windows without installing a browser extension?

Apple’s documented Windows workflow uses iCloud for Windows with Passwords & Keychain and then an extension for Chrome, Edge, or Firefox to provide browser autofill. Without the extension, the documented browser autofill workflow is incomplete.

Does iCloud Passwords import passwords already saved in Chrome or Edge?

Apple’s setup guidance explains that enabling the extension turns off the browser’s built-in password-saving feature, but it does not document automatic migration of passwords already stored by the browser. Do not assume the two stores merge.

Why can I autofill a password but not see the site’s passkey?

Password autofill and passkey authentication are different operations. Apple documents the Windows extension for passwords, while direct iCloud Keychain passkey handling through that extension is not established. Use the passkey option the website presents, such as a phone, Windows Hello, another provider, or a security key.

Can an iPhone act as my passkey for a Windows 11 login?

A website may offer a cross-device phone or tablet flow that uses a QR code and possibly Bluetooth pairing. That lets the phone authenticate the sign-in; it does not prove that the passkey has synced into Windows or into the iCloud Passwords extension.

Why is Passkeys > Advanced options missing in Windows 11?

Microsoft says an organization administrator may disable passkey-provider settings. On a work- or school-managed PC, contact the administrator. Also remember that the Windows setting is a general provider control, not confirmation of Apple’s specific Windows implementation.

Is a FIDO2 security key an iCloud Keychain sync solution?

No. A FIDO2 key is a separate physical passkey method. It can be offered by a website or Windows, but it does not synchronize iCloud Keychain passkeys to the PC.

What browsers does Apple list for iCloud Passwords on Windows?

Apple lists Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox for the iCloud Passwords browser extension.

The Bottom Line

Use iCloud for Windows for the capability Apple documents: iCloud Keychain password access, verification codes, and browser autofill in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. For passkeys, follow the provider and sign-in choices shown by the website and Windows. A phone, Windows Hello credential, another synced manager, or a FIDO2 key may work, but none should be described as proof that iCloud Keychain passkeys are syncing through Apple’s Windows app or extension.
