Play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker first if you want the easiest, most accessible starting point in 2026. On Switch 2, its original GameCube version is available through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, and its shorter campaign, bright art and forgiving pace make a strong first 3D Zelda. Choose Twilight Princess first only if you specifically want a darker, longer, dungeon-heavy adventure in the style of Ocarina of Time and already have Wii, GameCube or Wii U hardware.
These games are parallel stories, not a two-part saga. Wind Waker follows Ocarina of Time’s Adult timeline; Twilight Princess follows its Child timeline. Playing one first does not spoil, unlock or explain the other.

Wind Waker’s original version is now the practical entry point for Switch 2 owners, while both HD remasters remain Wii U-only. Nintendo has not confirmed native Switch or Switch 2 releases for either HD edition as of late October 2026.
Are Wind Waker and Twilight Princess connected?
They share the wider Zelda mythology but are not sequential games. Nintendo’s official chronology places Wind Waker on the Adult branch created when Ocarina of Time’s hero remains in the future: Hyrule is flooded and the Great Sea covers the old kingdom. Twilight Princess occupies the Child branch, where Link returns to his childhood and Hyrule continues alongside the Twilight Realm.

That difference matters thematically. Wind Waker is about leaving a dead kingdom behind and founding a new world; Twilight Princess is about protecting an established Hyrule from an encroaching shadow. You can start with either without missing a required prequel. Knowledge of Ocarina of Time adds references, but neither game assumes you have just finished it.
Which game is easier to access in 2026?
Wind Waker wins on current hardware. The original GameCube game joined Nintendo Switch 2’s Nintendo Classics catalog on 5 June 2025 through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Save states also reduce the frustration of long sailing trips. The original Switch has no official Wind Waker release.
Twilight Princess has no official Switch or Switch 2 version as of 27 October 2026. Your legal choices are a GameCube disc, the mirrored Wii edition, or the Wii U HD remaster. If a Wii U is already in the house, it is the best single system for playing both games in HD. Otherwise, a Switch 2 owner can begin Wind Waker immediately and seek a used Twilight Princess disc later.
Rumors of a two-game Switch bundle have circulated for years, but no product has been announced. Reports that Nintendo could still bring Wind Waker HD to Switch 2 are speculation, not a release plan. Do not buy hardware on the assumption that a port is imminent.
What are the biggest differences in tone and art?
Wind Waker uses cel shading, saturated colors and highly expressive animation. Toon Link’s face communicates surprise, fear and determination without dialogue, and the visual style has aged unusually well. Its humor, island communities and found-family story feel welcoming even when the stakes become apocalyptic.
Twilight Princess uses realistic proportions, earthy colors and a heavier atmosphere. Link begins as a 17-year-old ranch hand in Ordon, becomes Wolf Link and travels between Hyrule and the Twilight Realm with Midna. The game is deliberately dramatic: cursed provinces, a harsher Ganondorf and a more somber score create the “Ocarina of Time, but bigger and gloomier” feeling many players want.

This is a taste decision rather than a quality ranking. Wind Waker’s graphics are easier to recommend to players who dislike early-2000s realism; Twilight Princess suits players who want a serious fantasy presentation and a more physically weighty Link.
Which has the better world and pacing?
Wind Waker replaces a continuous Hyrule field with the Great Sea, a 7-by-7 grid of 49 sectors. You sail between islands with the King of Red Lions, conduct wind direction with the Wind Waker baton, and use songs to warp or change day and night. Every horizon promises a small discovery: a submarine, grotto, chart, trading quest or island dungeon.
The sea is also the game’s most divisive stretch. The original boat is slow, and the late Triforce search asks you to recover charts, pay Tingle to decipher them and salvage shards. Wind Waker HD adds the Swift Sail, which supplies constant wind and doubles sailing speed, and changes the quest so five shards are found directly while only three retain the chart loop. The HD version also shortens several animations and expands the Picto Box from three to 12 photographs.
Twilight Princess has a more traditional land overworld. Epona enables fast travel and horseback combat; Hyrule Field connects grottos, villages and nine large dungeons. Its opening in Ordon is deliberately slow, followed by wolf-form Tears of Light sections that some players find repetitive. Once the central story opens, its pacing becomes more conventional than Wind Waker’s oceanic detours.

Twilight Princess is the clear choice for dungeon quantity and item variety. It has nine major dungeons, including the Goron Mines, Arbiter’s Grounds and Snowpeak Ruins. The Spinner, Ball and Chain and Dominion Rod give each area a distinct mechanical identity. Its combat system adds Hidden Skills such as the Ending Blow and shield bash, with more deliberate spacing and heavier hit reactions.
Wind Waker has seven dungeons and a more linear item progression. Toon Link is nimble, parries and counters fluidly, and can use enemy weapons in a playful way. The system is easier to read for newcomers, while Twilight Princess offers more techniques to master. Wind Waker originally planned two additional dungeons; schedule pressure turned that content into the Triforce chart and sea recovery sequence that remains its most criticized structural choice.

Twilight Princess HD improves the original without radically redesigning it. It runs at 1080p, speeds up Wolf transformation, reduces Tears of Light from 16 to 12 per area, adds the Ghost Lantern for Poe hunting and includes the Cave of Shadows challenge with a Wolf Link amiibo. Hero Mode is available from the beginning, mirrors the world like the Wii edition, doubles damage and removes heart drops.
Which story and companion are stronger?
Wind Waker begins with Link leaving Outset Island to rescue his sister Aryll. His voyage introduces Tetra, who is revealed as Zelda, and the King of Red Lions, later revealed as King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule. The ending’s decision to let the old kingdom remain underwater gives the adventure an unusually clear theme: the future belongs to Link, Tetra and the people they will gather, not to a restored past.

Her sarcasm gradually gives way to trust and sacrifice, and her arc is the emotional spine of the game. Zant and Ganondorf provide a more traditional villain structure, but Midna’s relationship with Link is the reason many players remember the story.
If you value humor, music and a coming-of-age voyage, Wind Waker has the advantage. If you want a companion with a long character arc and a darker climax, Twilight Princess is the better fit.
How long are Wind Waker and Twilight Princess?
GameRant’s 2023 compilation of HowLongToBeat data estimates the original Wind Waker at 27–28 hours for the main story and 59–60 hours for completionist play. Wind Waker HD is about 25–26 hours main and 43–44 hours completionist; IGN’s widget lists roughly 26 hours for the story and 43 hours for everything.
The original Twilight Princess is estimated at 37–38 hours main and 56–57 hours completionist. Twilight Princess HD is about 29–30 hours main and 44–45 hours completionist. The HD figure is shorter largely because quality-of-life changes remove backtracking, not because dungeons were cut.

Those are aggregated player-report figures, not a guaranteed schedule. Exploration, optional heart pieces, figurines, poes, charts and the Cave of Shadows can add many hours.
Which game was better received and more successful?
Critics gave both original releases near-universal acclaim. Metacritic lists Wind Waker at 96/100 from 80 critic reviews and Twilight Princess at 95/100. The HD editions scored 90/100 from 70 reviews for Wind Waker HD and 86/100 from 74 reviews for Twilight Princess HD. User scores listed by Metacritic are 9.0 from 1,703 ratings for Wind Waker HD and 8.6 from 691 ratings for Twilight Princess HD.
Wind Waker’s original GameCube release sold 4.6 million copies, below Ocarina of Time’s 7.6 million. The commercial response helped push Nintendo toward Twilight Princess’s realistic art direction. Twilight Princess became the larger commercial rebound, although no single independently audited lifetime figure had been published. Wind Waker HD had sold 2.37 million units worldwide by September 2023.
Sales explain why the games look so different, but they do not settle which one you should play. Later commentary has often treated Wind Waker as one of the series’ best entries; Twilight Princess remains the fan-service classic built around the request for a realistic successor to Ocarina of Time.
Which version should you choose?
Choose Wind Waker HD when you have a Wii U
Wind Waker HD is the definitive version. Swift Sail fixes the slowest traversal, the revised Triforce quest removes much of the late-game drag, the GamePad provides an always-visible map and inventory, and gyroscope aiming makes the grappling hook and bow comfortable. Hero Mode and the skippable introduction make repeat runs faster.
Choose the original Wind Waker on Switch 2 when convenience matters
The Nintendo Classics release preserves the GameCube game and is entirely valid for a first play. Expect slower sailing and the full chart-based Triforce hunt. Save states help before long crossings, but they do not add HD improvements. There is no official Wind Waker on the original Switch.

Choose Twilight Princess HD when you have a Wii U
The Wii U remaster combines 1080p presentation with button controls, faster wolf transformations, fewer Tears of Light and the Ghost Lantern. Its Normal Mode follows the GameCube layout; Hero Mode mirrors the Wii layout. The Wolf Link amiibo unlocks the Cave of Shadows.
Choose GameCube or Wii Twilight Princess when HD is unavailable
Both originals are complete games. GameCube keeps left-handed Link and standard controller input. Wii mirrors the world so sword swings match a right-handed Wii Remote and uses motion controls. Guides written for one edition can therefore reverse left and right in the other.

Which Zelda should you play first based on your taste?
- Play Wind Waker first if you own a Switch 2, prefer expressive cartoons, are coming from Breath of the Wild, want a 25–28-hour campaign, or dislike slow early-2000s realistic graphics.
- Play Twilight Princess first if you loved Ocarina of Time, want nine dungeons and gadget-driven puzzles, prefer darker fantasy, already own a Wii or Wii U, or care more about Hidden Skills than Toon Link’s bounce.
- Play both in either order if you are exploring the 3D Zelda canon. They deliberately demonstrate two different design directions: Wind Waker’s open sea and bold visual experiment, and Twilight Princess’s classic land-based structure.
After Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks are optional direct-timeline follow-ups, not prerequisites for Twilight Princess. They remain tied to DS hardware and older Wii U digital availability, so play them only if the Great Sea setting itself interests you.
How should a first-time player approach the pair?
- Check hardware first. Start Wind Waker on Switch 2 through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, or use Wind Waker HD on Wii U. For Twilight Princess, use Twilight Princess HD on Wii U, then GameCube or Wii if necessary.
- Pick the tone you want. Choose the colorful sea voyage for a lighter introduction; choose the shadowed Hyrule adventure for a more dramatic, traditional fantasy.
- Set expectations about the weak spots. Wind Waker’s original sailing and Triforce hunt are slower than HD. Twilight Princess spends a long time in Ordon and its early wolf sections before the dungeon rhythm arrives.
- Play the other game next. Neither order creates a story problem. Seeing both makes the design contrast—and the series’ willingness to reinvent itself—more apparent.
