It depends which “new touch gestures” you mean. Mac Multi-Touch gestures require a built-in Multi-Touch trackpad or a Magic Trackpad, and your Mac’s Trackpad settings show which gestures it supports. iPhone Mirroring is a separate feature with its own Mac, iPhone, software-version, and regional requirements.
Check whether your Mac supports trackpad gestures
Apple’s Multi-Touch gestures work with a Mac’s built-in Multi-Touch trackpad or an external Magic Trackpad. Apple’s support page, Use Multi-Touch gestures on your Mac, describes gestures such as tapping to click, two-finger secondary clicking and scrolling, pinching to zoom, rotating, and multi-finger navigation. The exact gestures available can vary by Mac and macOS version.

- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings > Trackpad.
- Review the gesture controls and demonstrations. Apple says this pane shows which gestures work on that Mac.
- Use the controls to view, customize, or turn off gestures. For more detail, see Apple’s guide to viewing and customizing mouse or trackpad gestures.
If you use a desktop Mac, or its built-in trackpad is unavailable, a Magic Trackpad is the directly relevant external option. It is not a required upgrade for a Mac that already has a working compatible trackpad.

Trackpad gestures and Magic Mouse gestures are different
A Magic Mouse has its own gesture set; do not assume it supports every gesture listed for a trackpad. Check Apple menu > System Settings > Mouse for the gestures available to your mouse. Apple also notes that Magic Mouse models with a USB-C port require macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later. Gesture details may vary across macOS versions—for example, Apple documents a Mission Control gesture that can use three fingers instead of four.

Check iPhone Mirroring separately
If by “touch gestures” you mean controlling a mirrored iPhone from your Mac, trackpad compatibility alone does not determine eligibility. Apple’s iPhone Mirroring requirements specify macOS Sequoia 15 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon or the Apple T2 Security Chip, and iOS 18 or later on the iPhone. Apple says the Mac’s mouse or trackpad can click, hold, scroll, and swipe in the mirrored iPhone.
