Instagram has no built-in way to hide that, with one reported exception: Story Preview, a feature of the paid Instagram Plus subscription. Every other trick is either limited to public accounts, unreliable, or risky.
What Instagram shows the poster
Bitdefender’s Cristina Popov (article published March 2, 2026, updated April 24, 2026) says a viewer’s username appears in the creator’s viewer list. Her wording is blunt: “Instagram does not offer a built-in way to view Stories anonymously, no matter how casual or harmless the curiosity may seem.” She also states: “There is no legitimate way to view private Stories anonymously.”

MeFreeSocial, in an article published October 3, 2026, attributes the same visibility rule to Instagram’s Help Center. I could not check Instagram’s own Help Center pages directly, so the details below that depend on Instagram Plus come from that secondary report.

The one official exception: Instagram Plus Story Preview
MeFreeSocial reports that Instagram Plus subscribers can use Story Preview to look at a Story without their username appearing in the poster’s viewer list or being counted in the view number. The article quotes Instagram’s description of the feature as letting you “preview stories without the pressure to react.”

- It is paid. Instagram Plus is a subscription.
- It is not available to everyone. The article says availability is limited. I can’t confirm which countries or what price apply, so check the Instagram app for your own account.
- It is a preview, not a full view. If you open the Story normally and watch it fully, you still appear in the list.
Methods compared
| Method | Uses your Instagram account? | What the poster can see | Reliability and risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary Story view | Yes | Your account in the viewer list | Standard behavior |
| Instagram Plus Story Preview | Yes (subscriber) | Reportedly nothing, if you only preview | Official but paid and not universal; reported by MeFreeSocial |
| Third-party anonymous viewer site | No, per the sources | Nothing from your account | Public accounts only; unofficial; the site may collect your visitor data |
| Airplane mode | Yes (Stories preload) | The view may be recorded when you reconnect | Inconsistent and undocumented |
| Second account | Yes, a different one | The other account’s name | Not true anonymity |
| VPN | Yes, unchanged | Your account, still | Does not hide a logged-in view |
Third-party anonymous viewer sites
These sites fetch Stories from public profiles without using your login, which is why your name doesn’t reach the poster. The limits are firm:
- Public accounts only. Any site claiming to open private Stories should be treated as a scam or a credential grab. Bitdefender says there is no legitimate way to do it.
- The site sees you. You are anonymous to the poster, not to the site, which may log your IP address and device details.
- Never enter your Instagram username or password. MeFreeSocial notes Instagram’s warnings about outside apps that ask for account access. Handing over a login can mean a hijacked account.
- Unvetted. I can’t recommend any specific viewer, and none has been verified as safe or reliable.
Why the popular tricks fail
Airplane mode
The idea is to let Stories load, switch on airplane mode, then watch offline. Bitdefender describes it as unreliable: the app can report the view once you reconnect or reopen it, and Instagram doesn’t document the behavior. Don’t count on it.

A second account
A spare account stops the poster from seeing your main name, which may spare you some awkwardness. But the poster sees a different account, not nobody, and accounts can be linked to each other. A private-account owner may also simply not approve it.
A VPN
A VPN protects your network connection and masks your IP address from sites you visit. It does nothing about the Instagram account you are signed in with, so a Story view made while logged in is still tied to that account.

If your real goal is controlling your own audience
MeFreeSocial points out that Instagram lets you hide your Stories and live videos from selected people, and that a private account limits content to approved followers. Hiding differs from blocking: the person can still see your profile and posts. If you’re worried about who watches your Stories rather than what you watch, these settings are the right tool.
