Google’s SynthID Detector checks supported images, video and audio for an embedded SynthID watermark. A detected mark is evidence that some content was created or edited with Google AI or a participating partner system. No mark is not proof that a file is human-made: the tool checks for a particular watermark, not every kind of AI generation.

What Google’s SynthID Detector checks

Google announced the SynthID Detector portal on May 20, 2025, to help identify content made with Google AI. SynthID is an imperceptible watermark embedded in generated media; the Detector looks for that signal. Google says SynthID is used across images, audio, video and text, including content from products such as Gemini, Imagen, Lyria and Veo. The public Detector’s stated media coverage is images, video and audio.

Google’s current overview says the Detector can check media made with Google AI and participating partners, including OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao. Partner coverage does not make it a universal AI detector: the test still depends on a detectable SynthID watermark. Google’s May 2025 announcement said more than 10 billion pieces of content had been watermarked at that time; this is a dated figure, not a count of everything the portal can identify today. Google’s SynthID Detector announcement and the current SynthID overview describe the system.

How to interpret the result

Watermark detected

A positive result means the check found SynthID in all or part of the image or video, which Google says indicates that Google AI created or edited that content. It does not establish that every part of the file was AI-made. For video, a reported interval identifies where a mark was detected; Google cautions that not every frame or moment within that interval is necessarily marked.

No watermark detected

This means the check did not find the SynthID signal. It does not establish that a file is authentic, human-made, or untouched. Content generated with another system may not carry SynthID, and changes to a marked file can sometimes make its watermark undetectable.

Unclear result

Google says a result can be unclear when there is not enough detail to watermark or verify, such as in very simple or abstract content. Treat that as inconclusive rather than as evidence for or against AI involvement.

Google’s Gemini guidance on verifying AI-generated images, videos and audio explains these result meanings and limitations.

What edits can do to a watermark

Google says SynthID will usually remain detectable after common changes such as resizing, recoloring or compression. However, many alterations or extreme manipulation can weaken or defeat detection. A negative result on an edited copy therefore says less than a check on the original file, if the original is available.

SynthID versus Content Credentials

These technologies provide different kinds of evidence. SynthID is an imperceptible signal embedded in media and checked by a compatible detector. C2PA Content Credentials are signed provenance information that can record origin and editing history when the relevant metadata is present. Credentials may provide useful context about a file, but they do not by themselves prove that it was AI-generated. The approaches can complement each other; neither is a universal authenticity verdict.

Google’s May 19, 2026 announcement said C2PA Content Credentials checks were rolling out in Gemini, with Search and Chrome planned in the following months. That describes the announcement at that date, not a guarantee of current availability in every location or product. The same post reported 50 million SynthID verification uses globally. Google’s May 2026 update describes those announcements.

Other ways to investigate a suspicious file

When SynthID finds nothing or the result is unclear, use multiple clues rather than treating any one as conclusive. Google recommends checking the source, using reverse image search, examining metadata and looking closely for visual inconsistencies. Possible image clues include garbled text, inconsistent small details, unusual shadows or lighting, and unnatural repetition. Such clues can justify further checking, but they do not prove that an image is AI-generated.

Limits that matter before you rely on a check

  • Coverage is watermark-specific. A negative result cannot rule out media made with AI systems that do not embed a detectable SynthID mark.
  • Edits can affect detection. Common transformations are generally tolerated according to Google, but repeated or extensive changes can make a mark harder to detect.
  • Text detection is a separate case. Google’s developer documentation describes SynthID Text detection as probabilistic, with watermarked, not-watermarked and uncertain outcomes. It says detection is less effective for factual responses and confidence can fall sharply after thorough rewriting or translation. These text-specific limits should not be assumed to describe image, audio or video checks. See Google’s SynthID Text documentation.
  • Gemini app quotas are not necessarily website quotas. Google’s Gemini Help page lists approximately 10 image checks, 10 video checks (up to five minutes total) and 10 audio checks (up to three hours total) in a rolling 24-hour window for the Gemini app. Those limits should not be assumed to apply to the SynthID Detector website.

Frequently asked practical questions

Does SynthID Detector work on media from every AI company?

No. Google says its coverage includes Google AI and participating partners, naming OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao in its current overview. It checks for SynthID, so content from systems without that detectable watermark may return no mark.

Can a positive result mean only part of a file was AI-generated?

Yes. Google says a mark may be found in all or part of an image or video. A detected segment is evidence about the marked content, not a claim that the whole file was generated.

Is there a charge or special device required?

The Detector is an online verification service; the evidence cited here does not establish a requirement to buy a device or accessory. Check the live portal for its current access requirements and supported upload formats, since those can change.
